Eight years ago, at 41, I walked into a small BJJ academy in Christchurch feeling like a middle-aged imposter in a gi two sizes too big. Life had gotten comfortable—desk job, dad bod, the usual. I’d heard BJJ was the great equalizer, but I still expected to get smashed by 20-year-olds. What I got instead was the single best decision I’ve ever made for my body, my mind, and my soul. BJJ didn’t just get me fit. It rewired how I handle pressure at work, how I show up as a husband and father, and how I face every challenge off the mats. The bruises fade, the medals collect dust, but the friendships and the lessons stay forever. At 49 I’m stronger, sharper, and happier than I was at 41—and I still can’t wait to step on the mat tomorrow. Oss.

5/5 stars – Absolutely love training at Axis Kaiapoi. The coaches are knowledgeable, patient, and provide great advice. The crew is friendly and supportive, always making you feel part of the team from day one. Perfect spot for anyone in North Canterbury looking to get into BJJ or level up their game. Highly recommend!
Friendly and welcoming of drop-ins. Professional calibre of coaching and rolling. Male and female team mates are friendly, encouraging and technical. Facilities clean and good mat space. Would recommend whether its your first ever class or you're looking for a good open mat. Safe space, good people.
Very fun and interesting place to attend, Axis has a new way of fighting that you don't see that is very interesting and I think everyone should give it a go
I was in Christchurch for a family visit and was missing my own training back in Perth, Australia. I dropped in to Axis were I was warmly welcomed by the team. The atmosphere was great, the coach was amazing and the team training were friendly. This will definitely be my go to next time i'm in town as well as any friends or family. I highly recommend checking it out. Thanks team and especially Coach Ben!
