As a former student of Mrs. Blackmer, she is a fantastic instructor and has been teaching here for well over a decade. I highly recommend this ATA and the staff here. I can’t wait to visit again!
This is an excellent martial arts school! Mrs. Blackmer is great with students of all ages. Her classes are well structured, and she incorporates life values into every class. She also hosts seminars to provide her students with opportunities to further their skills.
I take private kickboxing lessons with Grace and it’s been an amazing add on to my weekly weight training routine. Grace knows how to challenge me, she’s great at breaking down the moves and explaining how I would use them in real life moments, the space is always clean and put together. It’s a great place to be for a great workout!
Great place to learn TKD. We started as a family a year ago, we can go at our pace and has taught confidence to all three kids. Highly recommend to anyone interested in learning. Mrs. Blackmer really knows her stuff.
This place is so amazing for my kids! Work around anything we have going on! We love this place and the instructor!
My family has been going to ATA for two years. It is an amazing experience for myself and my kids. We are a busy family and have a very busy schedule. Grace (owner) has been so understanding and has worked with my kids and made extra arrangements to help my son keep up with class. Truly, an amazing experience. That being said I myself has joined ATA and love the workout it has given me…. I have recommended ATA to many of our friends for their children. ATA provides the morals that I find are lacking in this day and age. Would highly recommend this class for anyone who would like for their family/kids a sense of purpose, confidence, discipline, and a great workout to boot! My son Nathan insisted we continue classes when we couldn’t go due to life 101…thank you ATA for being there for my family
I started training with Mrs. Blackmer online during the covid crisis in the beginning, I found found it to be very beneficial and great to re focus my mind. She makes it fun and is creative with students.
My granddaughter goes there to learn martial arts training....it is a excellent place for children to learn self defense, and teaches them many core values to live by....
My grandson achieved black belt tonight. They are awesome here as my grandson gets frustrated easily (autism) & they are great at working with him.
My son enjoys having fun and I enjoy that he's learning valuable life skills.
My children love it and I love it! It can get pricey if you really decide to dedicate yourself, but they're willing to work with you on just about everything. It's well worth it to see the confidence and discipline my children are beginning to exhibit. And the instructors make classes so much fun!
Our family has been training at ATA for almost 3 years. The instruction and learning environment are top notch. The value of the all around growth we have seen in our children far exceeds the price of our family membership.
You will get out of it what you put into it. One month in and I've lost 9 pounds already. Master Pline is highly skilled and professional. The environment is very friendly and has a great atmosphere for learning. I highly recommend it!
This is a great place for any child to learn self-control, discipline, responsibility, and coordination. Master Pline is a great instructor and does a wonderful job with the kids. Motivational, encouraging, and consistent. ATA has classes for the younger kids, the older kids, for leadership, and for adults.
Master Pline is a great instructor and I love taking classes with him!
It is not my experience, but my sons that I want to talk about. My son Chris was hit by a car when he was 15 years old, spent 22 days in a non-responsive coma and has a traumatic brain injury as well as other physical injuries that hinder some of his activities. He is now 34. What I would like to say is that when he first wanted to join, I was a little apprehensive. I wasn't sure how it would affect the limitations he has or how he would do. But, he wanted to try, so we gave it a shot. And I have to say it has been a remarkable experience for him!!!! Not only has his balance improved and his flexibility increased but his confidence has sky rocketed and he has become more patient and helpful. Now, I know that this Academy is not cheap. Believe me. I understand. But, it IS an academy which means that you are in a school. Now, I don't know who has checked tuition at even a city college level, but it is more than $9,000 for even an associates degree. And at ATA you are being taught by a MASTER. I wonder how much you would pay to be taught by a MASTER in any other subject or endeavor. (And it certainly costs more than that to GET a Masters degree in any subject you might want to learn.) And so, even at that level I have to say that it is a really good deal. But, the last couple of weeks my son has seen his primary care doctor and his neurologist. His neurologist was impressed with his posture, his flexibility and his reflexes. Which is awesome. With his primary care doctor he got the BEST results on his blood work than he has EVER had. EVER!!!!!! And he has lost weight and is in the best physical shape he has been in since before his accident. So, I don't know about anyone else, but I don't think I can put a dollar amount on that!!!!!
My oldest son started in July of 2013, Right from the beginning he loved the classes and the values that Master Pline taught in the class helped him in his everyday life and boosted his self esteem greatly. Early in 2014 my youngest son wanted to start participating and he also showed signs that the training was effecting him in a positive way. Not long after I decided to try the training, I continue today due to the fact that it is an exceptional workout and it makes me feel great. The three of us continue in our training and as a family we continue to improve as a family from the positive training we receive from Master Pline as his team of instructors. The training goes way beyond learning the forms and techniques of ATA, it helps with anything from conditioning to behavioral challenges. I would recommend anyone to attend the training at the ATA facility, you will be greeted with a warm welcome.
We have been members since 2011. I have three kids who attend ATA. It provides great conditioning all year round for other sports my kids enjoy. The contract is only one page and very self explanatory. Master Pline is wonderful, He has taught my kids awesome life lessons and often I find myself verbally repeating his words to my kids as a back up in my parenting. For example: I take my kids on many vacations and am nervous of sending my boys into bathrooms by themselves. I remind them of what Master Pline has taught them in self defense and have them show me what to do in a scary situation. We love ATA and would recommend it to anyone. ATA has taught my kids respect, eye contact, perseverance, goals, commitment, honor, and confidence, just to name a few. After all, how many five year old boys know what perseverance means and uses it in their everyday language? Thank You Master Pline for being a great role model in my children's life.
Traverse City ATA is a safe, fun learning environment where children thrive! My four children, ages 4, 7, 13 and 15 have been training with Master Pline since 2012 and we all absolutely love it! Every class provides a great physical workout and fabulous mental exercise. The awesome instructors at Traverse City ATA instill priceless life skills onto every student. Honor, respect and self control are taught and demonstrated in a manner that children of all ages can understand and relate to. I have seen a tremendous difference in my children's behavior at home and at school since they began training. They are well focused, earn better grades and show great manners. Training at ATA has been one of the greatest and most important decisions I have ever made for my family!
ATA was where I learned how to defend myself and meet great people.
Personally my daughters did not enjoy the classes, not because of this place specifically, karate just wasn't for them. I've read the other reviews, the prices were a bit higher than the other places and the contracts are strict, however the classes seemed good and as with everything else you get what you pay for. I was locked in for a 6 month contract, after a month my girls no longer wanted to attend, I was doing this to build self confidence and forcing them to do something they did not like didn't seem like a good idea. I spoke with Master Pline about my situation and he handled it in a very professional manner. Even though the classes didn't work out for my family, I was very happy with the over all experience.
If you're looking to learn Krav Maga/self defense (and are willing to put in consistent, longterm effort)--ATA Martial Arts in Traverse City is great choice. The program has a emphasis on fitness, hand-to-hand combat, knife, gun, stick defense and practical, real-world ground defense/techniques. The environment is welcoming and friendly. There's definitely a fun, "community" vibe among the other trainees--trainees that run the gamut, demographically. Young and old. Men and women.
Master Pline is a very knowledgeable Master of Teakwondo. This academy is well worth the time and money we put into it for my son who is working very hard to earn his black belt soon. He has shown great improvements in his behavior and is showing more focus as well.
Confidence boosting and positive atmosphere for the kids... I also was turned off by the pushy sales tactics. Sale flyers can be handed or emailed to parents without the kids knowing. Sponsoring a child through an expesive activity/ dedication like this is not easy for most households.
We went here because of the TCAPS free class. It seems like a good class but I did not like the pushy sales tactics and the higher price than other places in town.
Signed up through the TCAPS LEAP program for a month @ $40. Class was great but the over-emphasis/pushy sales tactics ruined it for us. We were asked to bring our son (4 years old) in for a 1-on-1 session to get to know us and it ended up being one giant sales pitch trying to get us to sign up for $150/month for 2 sessions per week... Before the actual class started he approached another parent to see if they had thought about the offer. We did not and will not go back.
The payment information was very misleading. We were under the impression that we were paying month to month, but we're now locked in for a year. When they wrote our contract they put 12 months even though we had only discussed paying month to month. Also once you sign up you are not allowed to cancel!!!!! They are crooks! I guess that is how they are able to afford their vineyard!Just a bunch of information that does not get shared with you until after you are signed up. Then you receive a bunch of stubs from superior credit services and you find out you send the money to them instead of paying directly at ATA. They also will not allow you to use your own equipment there and require you to buy only the ones they supply. We are very dissatisfied customers. Just unbelievable!!!!
