AON is amazing!! I practiced there for a little less than a year (before getting sick that's to say that I miss the team, and the culture! The instructors, professor Tom and Cliff, are some of the most technically sound I've ever known. And as a team, everyone adapts to what you need, from light exercise, to self defense, to competition level jiu jitsu. There are people from all walks of life which testifies to how welcoming they are! I really can’t recommend this place highly enough!

Our 8-year-old has been a student at AON for a year and a half. He's learned so much, made a lot of friends and had a ton of fun. Professor Thomas and Professor Cliff are very dedicated and patient teachers, and they have put together an amazing school. BTW, their summer camps are also wonderful!

I joined AON in January of this year and I only have positive things to say about the instructors and my teammates around me. It is a very beneficial and uplifting environment that will make you want to come back and keep training. Professors Cliff and Tom devote their time to making sure all the students feel welcome. AON feels like my family and home away from home!

This school has been one of the best places to come and learn jujitsu. Out of all my school I have went to, this one has been one of the jujitsu school that has stuck with me and kept me motivated to keep coming back. The professors at Aon have not only taught me but have helped me improve my game drastically with not only new techniques, but effective ones. At Aon there is always a new person that you meet, so there is always a new game you are going to face.

A note of sincere appreciation and gratitude to Professor Thomas for his hospitality and openness in allowing my son to drop into the adult class. We’re in town for the holidays from Canada to visit grandparents and family. The whole experience was a ton of fun. Both my teenagers have been training in martial arts since they were four and a half years old. We’ve been privileged to visit and train at many gyms. My oldest, at age 16, gets excited to learn from new masters in our travels. The AON jiujitsu club is a massive asset to the community. As parents, we look to equip our children with the skills and mindset to navigate the world around them. This gym and the teachings extended in this space are indeed a gift. Wishing Professor Thomas and the entire roster of athletes continued success!

We love this Jiu-Jitsu school !! I have taken my kids to try all the schools in and around Richmond and by far this is the best. Professor Thomas is amazingly patient with the kids and knows how to teach them while still keeping the class very fun, my kids they love being there. There are lots of coaches on the mats which really helps the kids out. Really good team vibe, super friendly and made my family feel very welcome.

I highly recommend AON to anyone interested in learning Jiu Jitsu. Professors Tom & Cliff as well as all the coaches are very knowledgeable and care about each student. Their passion is evident in everything they do. In my opinion, what differentiates AON is the way they work with kids - teach discipline and help them gain self-confidence. My child went to AON for over a year and she loved every minute of it!

Training at AON has been a great experience for me. Professors Thomas and Cliff are highly knowledgeable and seamlessly adapt their teaching to the individuals. I always know I'll come out of class with a detail to modify or a new technique to work into my game.

We've tried several Jiu Jitsu schools and these Coaches are perfect for young learners. I have kids in the 5 year old range and they are learning while having lots of fun. The coaches have the patience, the mannerisms, and the experience needed to cultivate skill in young students.

I’ve trained at AON for a little over a month now and I can say that I thoroughly satisfied with the two instructors, Professor Thomas and Cliff, the academy is pristine. As it is my first time training jiujitsu the way they teach is very thorough and amazing I feel as if I already am so much better than when I started and I look forward to training every day (five days a week). I am honored to train here.

Extremely welcoming atmosphere for both new & experienced BJJ practitioners. Professors Thomas & Cliff are very technical & very hands on to ensure students get the fine details/concepts of each technique. The academy is very family friendly. They're patient with the children. The gym is very clean throughout the facility & the waiting area for parents is very comfortable. The kids classes are well suited to teach the principles & mechanics of Jiujitsu in a way that has been easy for my kids to absorb/relate to. It's very entertaining & engaging for the little ones. If you're in the area, you should definitely stop in & check them out.

I have wanted to do martial arts since I was a kid, but to be honest, it really intimidated me. I decided after a lot of thought to join a BJJ academy, and set up a meeting with the professor of the dojo. A sincerely kind, humble, yet powerful man met me at the door and immediately made me feel comfortable getting started. This was 5 years ago when I had the honor to start training jiu jitsu with Professor Thomas Pless! Not only is he a true master of the art of jiu jitsu, but he is extremely knowledgeable in many forms of striking, muy thai, boxing and self defense. His teaching style is dynamic, and his attention to details is unparalleled to none. He has a masterful way of working with children as well. The experience has changed my entire life - and has given me a better understanding of who I am. My practice of jiu jitsu has permeated all my life interests and definitely made me a better person. Not only has my life has changed for the better, as I am now approaching earning my purple belt, Professor Pless has made a huge difference in my entire family's life. Both my kids are training now, and so is my wife. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to this man and his continued efforts to make the world a better place through jiu jitsu. I would recommend training with Professor Pless to anyone out there.

I’ve trained in several Jiu Jitsu schools both in the US and the UK and Professor Pless and Professor Vaz are two of the best instructors I’ve ever trained with. They both have extensive knowledge in Jiu Jitsu, MMA, Muay Thai and love teaching it. Both are very technical, have a good sense of humor and don’t tolerate egos on the mat. People come in all shapes and sizes and they are very good at teaching and adjusting techniques for all those shapes and sizes. I love Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai and have many great memories on the mats and most of them include Professor Pless and Professor Vaz right there next to me…or one of them choking me out..haha. The new AON Jiu Jitsu location is one of the cleanest and impressive gyms I’ve ever seen. I wish them the best in this new adventure and highly recommend you check them out if you are anywhere close.

While I can't say I've trained at AON, specifically, I can say with full confidence that Professor Pless is the highest caliber teacher, regardless of topic. I began training with Professor Thomas Pless is August of 2017. I was a 45 year old, out of shape, undisciplined former athlete. But as a substance abuse counselor, I found myself in situations that were physically unsafe and I turned to Professor Pless for help. Even though I was older than many of his students, he welcomed me into his school and I began my training. Since that first meeting, I have now earned junior level blue belt in Brazillian Jiu Jitsu. But along the way, I found a school and a group of people who have never judged me and have always sought to teach and learn together. Professor Pless created more than a school, he created a community through which I have overcome many of life's stresses and obstacles. I can certify and attest that any school with which Professor Pless is involved will be a learning community where respect and trust are paramount. I continue to train and while Professor is now at AON, I hear his teachings every time i step on the mat. He is a humble master that serves his students well. I highly recommend Professor Thomas Pless because without this training, i would still be searching for a gym. But through his trainings, i found more than a gym; i found a community where i feel safe, but i also know I can take care of myself, physically, if i need to....
