I have been training at this dojo off and on since 2006, and my son has been training there for the last few years. This is a traditional dojo and the quality of aikido is excellent. But what makes it an amazing place is that it is family oriented and offers a wonderful community. Honestly, if someone is older, out of shape, or just has no experience with practicing aikido, this dojo does an excellent job of teaching the fundamentals in a safe and nurturing environment. Once a new member signs up, he or she is given a senior student or instructor who works with that person during class and who goes at his or her pace. They also make other members aware that the person is new to the dojo by putting a stripe on their belt, so people will be mindful and protective of this person during training. This dojo also has an exceptional children's program which is taught by instructors who have a lot of experience working with kids. They make class enjoyable while teaching the fundamentals of traditional aikido. And there is a junior deshi program which has allowed many youths who commit to practicing regularly to eventually earn their blackbelt. They also offer a youth and teen adaptive aikido class which is great for students who have special learning needs. The class size is smaller and can go at a pace which meets the needs of each student. It also has more instructors on the mat which offers students the support they need. Sensei Jay and the other instructors work closely with parents to understand what each child needs, so they can plan what approach works best during class. Overall, this is a great place which offers many benefits, not only for physical conditioning, but socially and emotionally. Thanks!

I enrolled my daughter and niece's into this school a few months ago. After seeing how obsessed my daughter is with Akido and with some encouragement from Sempi Frank and Daniel, I got on the mat. It was the best decision. You get to train with both the students and Sempi’s. And let me tell you, the Sempi’s are great!! I have had the pleasure to be trained by Sempi Daniel, Olga, Darrel, Barry, Paul, and Tom,(who’s a total bada$$). They are all patient and encouraging. The best part about training here is that you feel at home. Sensi Jay believes in creating more than just a school. He believes in creating a community and he has succeeded. He makes you feel welcomed from the first day. So if you are on the fence about joining, I encourage you to come in and try one class. You won’t regret it. Plus, it’s a great workout!!

My daughter loves aikido and is looking forward to pursuing her training for many years to come! One thing of note: you aren’t just a student or parent when you join, you become part of a community ❤️

I recently started my journey in Aikido, and Iaido. My first impression with my first class was phenomenal staff working together to assist me. I currently enjoy being at the school, and training with the instructors, and students. Hopefully, I obtain a black belt in a few years. Thank you Aikido Schools of New Jersey.

Aikido Schools of New Jersey(ASNJ) is one of my favorite places. It has taught me so much, and continues to educate me. It's far more significant than just a dojo, it's a family. It has an incredible community, and the aikido is even better. The aikido isn't only opulent, but effective. ASNJ won't only help win fights, stay out of fights, deal with bullies, or be safe walking at night, it can help with equanimity. As the clumsiest person I know, I can also testify that in any falling fiasco aikido can definitely save you. I highly recommend this impeccable, efficacious dojo; ten out of ten.

Excellent weapons classes and great structure for young children and teenagers. The instructors offer hands-on guidance for Aikido. Most instructors and practitioners of art help you achieve your rank of belt class. The school is an all-around good environment for adults to learn Aikido and weapons.

Punch, whiff, pivot, spin, throw – KA-BLAM! This is aikido, among the most beautiful and effective martial arts in the world. There are certainly arts that dispatch an opponent more directly, but most of those leave him shattered on the ground. Aikido is unique in its ability to calibrate response to an incoming attack in the service of inflicting no more harm than absolutely necessary to diffuse the situation. If that sounds awfully charitable among the world of fighting systems - it is. And mastery of that calibration requires study and self-control. In the bargain, the aikidoist gains a set of techniques – really a mode of operating in the world – that is applicable to an expansive range of human experiences, not just those that devolve into hand-to-hand combat. I have been lucky enough to study at over a dozen different aikido schools during my 30-year career in the art. Aikido Schools of New Jersey (ASNJ) is distinctive for its warm, family-friendly atmosphere. If you’re looking for the next hot MMA school to unleash your brutality and exert your dominance -- keep on scrolling. Walking into ASNJ you will find people of all different sizes and shapes smiling, laughing, supporting, and respecting one-another. Sure, we’re also wiping each other out on the mat, but we’re doing that in the service of learning, growth, and mastery. ASNJ supports a robust adult program, weapons training, iaido, kid’s classes, tai chi, meditation, and yoga. If you’re looking to move your body and expand your mind, there’s probably something going on there for you. Note that aikido is also an excellent mode of full-body aerobic exercise. Big muscles, little muscles, core muscles, cardiovascular, circulatory – fall down and get back up 100+ times in an hour and you’ll be feeling it for sure. ASNJ classes targeted at specific intensities help lots of different body types work up a lather in a way that is safe, comfortable, and fun. Drop by, flop on a sofa, and check it out for yourself. You’ll fall for us, guaranteed.

I pick up and drop hobbies to the point it drives my wife crazy. I have been taking Tai Chi classes here for about a year; That's long for me. One reason I think I've stuck to taking classes is the great community vibe. The instructors are all very personable and welcoming. I have had a great time both learning, practicing and getting to know the instructors and other students. Also, I hear that if you know the secret password there is a fully stocked wet bar in the back office for after classes. (shhh)

My journey to find myself led me to this dojo. I came to ASNJ in 2005 and never left. I have great friends, a new family, and an amazing experience of self discovery. The lineage of our lead instructor is just one degree of separation from the founder. The guest instructors, and seminars have been enlightening, yet what I love most is knowing i have so much more to learn. I’ve learned that Aikido is alive in me, and that my growth doesn’t have an ending. I walk the path, I love the journey!!

Started iaido classes a month ago and am really enjoying it through and through. The staff, fellow members and students are all very accomodating and kind. Really a family environment all around and I very much recommend this dojo to everyone whether you're an experienced martial artist or a complete newbie to it all like I am.

On any given day, any given class, as soon as you walk through those doors, you will be received with the family, encouragement, and community that ASNJ is. I’ve joined the dojo Nov. 2018 after my five-year-old was already training for some weeks. WEEKS! It only took me a few weeks and a trial class to have the courage to step in the mat. After two months of going to classes, I knew aikido became a part of me. ASNJ is my safe space that I am proud to call it my second home. Jay (our Sensei) fosters the sense of community and is always open to new ideas, which often lead to great classes. The instructors are in constant growth, and you will usually have them as partners when they are not giving lessons. Having the opportunity to have your instructors (and even your Sensei) as partners take away the intimidation factor and leave the personal connection between Uke and Nage to take over. All this without counting that all the rolling and stands are a great workout. There is a well-established kids program (peaceful warriors), where as a mom, I have seen my child’s growth and the influence of Aikido in her life. She looks up to the Junior Deshi's (older kids) and wants to continue her ranks. The schedule allows me to take my girl to class and stay over for my training. You will see many parents/children practicing on the mat too.

This is one of the greatest Aikido dojos in the country. I have been training here for about six years. It has been great for my health. Three of my children also train here, and this school has the best martial arts kids program I have ever encountered.

I have been a student of the dojo for more than a decade and have reached the rank of first degree black belt. As a law enforcement officer having studied other martial arts in the past, Aikido has helped me in my career. Whether by itself or in conjunction with other martial arts, Aikido has helped me to do my job effectively as a police officer without any excessive force complaints. In the end, non-compliant arrestees that I encountered were apologetic and thankful that the Aikido philosophy of “attack the attack, not the attacker” fosters compassion over ego. The practice of aikido and iaido has allowed me to maintain a level of respect, “street credibility,” and approachability with the citizens who I protect. I recommend this art and this dojo to any law officer or martial artist looking for a unique approach to the application of the martial arts.

The #1 traditional martial arts school in New Jersey - no exaggeration. I spent years here as a student and uchi deshi, countless hours of training and learning from some of the best martial artists anywhere. So many amazing memories and gifts from this dojo. When I was transitioning from over 15 years of Judo training, I visited over a dozen dojos in NJ to find a dojo with lineage, hard training, excellent instructors, and most of all, CLEAN. One of my sempai, Derrell Thomas sensei says it best: "I've seen the dojo change and save people's lives". Visit, watch class, and I guarantee you'll want to join this amazing family of martial artists.

The school is great with some of the closest connections to the USAF headquarters out of NYC. The school is under the direction of Hal Lehrman who continues to study under Yoshimitsu Yamada, a direct student of the founder of Aikido and largely responsible for establishing Aikido in the United States. Hal is one of a hand-full of the highest ranking instructors in the United States so you are sure to get a great experience. Joseph Roy, the head instructor, along with his teaching staff are extremely experienced and you will learn as much as the time you are willing to put in. Students will experience a cooperative community and in addittion to ASNJ you will have access to Aikido of Park Slope and NY Aikikai among other affiliated Jersey schools. you can try a class any day of the week at various hours to fit your schedule. You need to stop by and catch the Aikido bug!

My second attempt to start studying this martial art. I want a learning experience, not just lifting weights or hitting something. Aikido teaches meditation, balance and is an amazing stress reliever after work. There are classes every day of the week. I go to evening classes after work. The atmosphere is inclusive and you will learn as much as you are willing to.

So I went to look at a few Aikido schools and this was one of them. I noticed that everyone in the place including blackbelts was a little heavy in the britches. The teacher just seemed miserable up there like he was being bothered teaching Aikido. Compared to the other Aikido schools I will be knocking this off my list.
