I started training at 10th Planet Oakland, four months ago, and absolutely fell in love. Mike and the rest of the coaches are amazingly skilled, and are great at breaking it down so even my beginner self can understand. As a woman it can be intimidating entering a male dominated space, however I felt very welcomed straight away. I love the overall environment, the staff, and members. I would highly recommend 10P Oakland to anyone curious about trying jiu jitsu

Originally got into Jiu Jitsu to break the mundane routine of everyday life. I knew absolutely nothing about Jiu Jitsu other than seeing Neo from the Matrix say “I’m going to learn Jiu Jitsu” I would always see the 10th planet mural (at their old location) on my way home from work and finally decided to take the chance and sign up. From day one; Michael and everyone at 10th Planet have been absolutely welcoming and made this gym feel like a second home. Jiu jitsu has helped reinforce all the positive perspectives of life and always leaves you feeling better after every class. You truly feel like a savage; able to take on whatever life throws at you with your chin held high. I would recommend jiu jitsu to anyone looking to shake things up but above all I would highly recommend 10th Planet Oakland. They’re the real deal!

The gym has a good feeling. I'm used to places we're people are trying to kill you. Students are respectful of one another and all the rolls I've had at this location have been very good. The morning instructor is cool with a great sense of humor. He also teaches things that everybody can use. Some instructors dont think about guys that can't play the ruber guard or some positions. Im 5'6. What works for a tall guy might not work for me. If I could I would give it 10 stars.

A rare gem. Such a great balance of competition and hobbyist. While training here I've met Animal vets, painters, EMT, hippies and they all mesh so well. Not only is the head coach Michael SUPER knowledgeable but the higher ranking members are as well. Also very welcoming & safe space for ALL levels. I always tell people who are interested in trying BJJ to come here.

I have been training at 10th Planet Oakland for about 6 months and cannot say enough about this gym and the people in it. Michael does a really good job in setting the tone for the culture in the gym. Everyone, not just the coaches, are super kind, respectful, and quick to help you out if you are struggling with a technique. If you are interested in trying out Jiu Jitsu or are on the fence, I highly recommend coming in for a trial class and see what it's like. You won't regret it.

Are you interested in no-gi BJJ? Do you want to enter into a comprehensive and proven system for developing and evolving your BJJ game? Are you looking for a safe place to learn with like-minded students? If you answered yes to any of these questions then you should absolutely check out 10th Planet Oakland. Mike uses his wealth of knowledge to break down BJJ into very simple but incredibly important and fundamental concepts.

Starting late in the game at 49 and not a very technical wrestler back in my youth 36 yrs. ago I was skeptical I would catch on to Jiu Jitsu, let alone the 10th Planet system. Around 20 classes in I can say the skepticism was totally unfounded. Because of the excellent AND very accessible coaching at Michael Hillebrand’s academy I’ve noticeably developed in that short amount of time surprising myself in the process. I’m looking forward to developing even further with this great group of athletes. Better late than never.

10th Planet Oakland Jiu Jitsu is probably the best Jiu Jitsu academy in the entire Bay Area, for real! The gym has a super welcoming environment and all of the instructors knowledge of Jiu Jitsu is unbelievable! Michael Hillebrand is one of the best coaches I've ever met. He is super dedicated and loyal to his team. He even helped coach me to winning an IBJJF Pan NoGi Title this year! I can't wait to get back up to Oakland and train with these guys again! I have been training at 10th Planet Oakland for 2 months and could not be anymore pleased. The coaches and the other members are phenomenal humans who have been super supportive in getting me started. My personal preference are the am classes due to fewer people which allows for more personal attention. Also my 8 year old son is now training here and I'm excited to learn and grow with him in this environment. Just this week we found out that the gym will be moving into a larger location just a few blocks away which I'm super excited for. After researching and doing my due diligence in finding the right gym, I'm so glad to have found 10th Planet Oakland. In a span of less than a year, I went from a clueless observer to a casual hobbyist and now to a medaling competitor in beginner tournaments! This journey is only possible because of Head Instructor Mike's vision for a top jiu jitsu academy, dedication to his students and their progress, and extensive knowledge of techniques and the sport. Caring and Expert Instructors! Head Instructor Mike holds deep and extensive Jiu Jitsu knowledge. The impressive and direct Jiu Jitsu lineage alone is proof that I'm learning from the very very best, but Mike takes it a step further by slowing things down to help students more easily digest techniques. His fellow instructors hold the teaching values in humility, compassion, and patience. Supportive and Caring Environment! The community Mike has built in the gym is truly special. Each student has their own Jiu jitsu ambition (to get fit, to compete, or just to learn about the martial arts), but we all support each other in reaching their goals. Mike sets the tone in making the gym a welcoming environment, and the friendly students make the classes so much more fun. Clean Gym! Mike, the fellow instructors, and even students take pride in keeping the mats, leisure area, bathrooms, and shower disinfected and polished every day. I deeply appreciate the cleanliness because I noticed by visiting other gyms that it is not commonly a top priority. BONUS! Mike has great relationships with current and previous top level competitors. He's invited ICONS of the game for seminars. Most recently, Alan Sanchez (top 10 in his weight class), Kristian Woodmansee (multiple time champions at the highest level), Ben Eddy (Combat Jiu Jitsu Champion) shared their wisdom. Previous seminars include: EDDIE BRAVO, RICHIE MARTINEZ, and CRAIG JONES.

Progressing quickly in jiu jitsu means you need to train consistently and frequently, so I spend a large portion of my free time at this gym. I can say with confidence: there is no other place I'd rather go to train jiu jitsu. Mike is extremely knowledgeable, as are all the other instructors. There are many classes offered per day, so it's easy to keep learning no matter your schedule. What strikes me most about the instructors (on top of their jiu jitsu prowess) is their passion for the sport. It's hard to be bored or lethargic when you're being taught by people who have so much energy for the techniques they're showing you. Showing up to this gym for the first time, I had a few worries. I'm shy, a woman in a combat sport, and I'm passive overall. But within a few weeks, I felt completely comfortable. That's thanks to the friendly community, the wonderful men and women in the gym, and the emphasis on reaching one's full potential. Everyone in the gym genuinely encourages and challenges each other. Now, I look forward to attending - both to train jiu jitsu and to hang out with the kind and helpful people at 10P. In most scenarios, you get out what you put in. At 10P Oakland, whatever you put in is multiplied exponentially. If you show up and stay engaged, you will be rewarded at this gym for your hard work.

Jiu Jitsu in a fun, safe, and welcoming environment. Since my very first moment stepping through the doors of 10th Planet Oakland, and on to the mats, I have felt welcomed and at home. Coach Mike is a personable guy with a good sense of humor and is a skilled practitioner. His teaching style is one which not only explains and breaks down the minutia, but also demonstrates said curriculum in a way that is easily digestible even for a complete novice. The students which attend this school come from a variety of backgrounds, skill sets, and experience. The young, the old, and the in between all come together to create an environment which fosters personal growth and development. If you are new to Jiu jitsu/grappling, but find that it may be a bit daunting, this is the best place to start. At this school everyone is very open and helpful, it feels much more like a team-sport than team-sports do! You may find yourself addicted to coming to the gym and training, but you will feel great! Luckily the gym and other students are very clean, the atmosphere is very positive and relaxed, not tense or aggressive. Making the first step to join, or to walk in is the most difficult part about training sometimes, once you get started you won't want to stop.

Mike is a steller teacher and he's running a great ship with the opening of the new gym. First off any path or move he teaches gets broken down technically with detail fit for the most modern tactics. Second you get lots of drilling time and lots of rolling time. Last - if you're a regular student (or even not a regular student) he keeps tabs on your development and is regularly giving us very personalized instruction for our games to grow. Amazing coach and gym - come check it out.

And another great thing about 10p Oakland is the family feeling we got here is just awesome people are more then happy to teach you some of the things they learned in the past. Also 10thpoakland is not a 3000 training academy, it's small which make it a perfect place to be at because we get to know each other and build a deeper connections. 10th planet Oakland is more than just a jiu jitsu gym. Michael and everyone at 10th Planet Oakland will make you feel very welcome, like a family. This sense of being part of a team, organization, high quality instruction, and supior technique is what makes Michael’s classes and everyone in them so special. As a newcomer or beginner, joining a new gym or academy can be daunting. All of those feelings dissolved for me the second I stepped on the mats at 10p. The breakdown and explanation of techniques done at 10p are unparalleled. Elsewhere I’ve found myself quickly forgetting basic steps of techniques right after a lesson. Michael teaches easy to follow step by step in a way that is easy to remember long-term. He will also make sure each and every person in the class understands, and is executing correctly. My only regret with 10th Planet Oakland, is that I did not sign up sooner. P.S. the place is always clean!

Wow! What an incredible experience! I came to this location hoping to find a good environment to learn BJJ. What I found was so much more. Mike has such an uplifting and down-to-earth personality that I never feel nervous showing up. This definitely has proven to work successfuly through his systematic leadership style. It causes everyone to be welcoming and approachable with a positive attitude to train (we are a reflection of our leadership). Everyday I show up I find more and more people who are happy to train, chat, teach, and learn from each other. One obvious sign of his successful leadership approach is that in just a few months his place has swelled to the point to every classes is packed. I highly suggest anyone interested in learning BJJ or continuing their skill to try it here above any other place in the bay area.

Great gym. Very nice people. Warm and friendly attitude from all of the trainers and members. If you are interested in Jiu Jitsu but feel intimidated, this is a great place to start. Also, this is probably the best work-out your are going to get, and it's engaging. Running is boring for me, but Jiu Jitsu is exciting, and I get much more cardio in a shorter period of time. I highly recommend 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Oakland.

Coming here was the best decision I could have made. Professor Hillebrand & Professor Gregor are extremely knowledgable, well spoken, and quick to help. Classes are challenging, but still easy to digest. The students are respectful while having a great time. Beautiful, clean new facility in a great location. I cannot reccomend this place enough!

From the UK and visited SF on business recently. Decided to enquire at 10th planet Oakland to see if they allow visitor drop ins. I just dropped them an email through their contact form on the website. Michael, the head coach and the rest of the guys couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful on and off the mats. I would definately recommend visiting this gym if you're in the bay area and looking for a good lesson and roll with valuable feedback from the coach afterwards. If you live in the bay area, you should join.

I second all the great things my husband said about 10th Planet Oakland. Professor Mike Hillebrand is a wonderful instructor and does a really great job of breaking down the details. He also stresses the importance of building the best habits at the beginner level which I really appreciate. The guest instructors like, Professor Strakl and Professor Matt, that come in are equally as thorough and very helpful in making sure we execute moves with purpose and precision. If you're hesitant to give 10th Planet Oakland a try, please don't be. Professor Hillebrand is about building a family of warriors, with an emphasis on family. We're all here to grow and build each other up, so rest assured that you will be taken care of. To put it into perspective, I'm a 5'2" woman and am rolling with men much larger and stronger than me. The men always show consideration and focus more on technique than strength when rolling with me so I've always felt safe here. Plus, we need more ladies to represent! We look forward to seeing you on the mats =)

YES! My wife and I were so excited when we saw a 10th Planet was opening up in Oakland! Mike Hillebrand and Gregor Strakl (who just returned from competition) are awesome! Very friendly and welcoming, and the instruction is top notch! Really love how detailed and specific they are, explaining the techniques in a very clear way. Also really appreciated their emphasis on a safe training environment; we're here to help each other grow together, not smash and injure our training partners. And the mats are the nicest I've ever been on! (And don't do what I did and bring a random generic rash guard your first day. He mentioned other schools having thousands of dollars of damage due to cheap dyes used in poor quality materials and ruining the mats...yikes, didn't even think about that!)

10th Planet Oakland is hands down the best place to train Nogi Jiu-Jitsu in Oakland. The owner Mike Hillebrand is a high level black belt and world class competitor. The gym is extremely clean and well maintained. It even has a shower which is pretty rare for a Jiu-Jitsu academy. I highly recommend any level of grappler to come by and train.

Great and fun place to train!! Mats are always clean and the culture here is just awesome! Mike is very knowledgeable and detailed when explaining each technique. Very systematic on his approach when teaching both beginners and advanced class. Mike also encourages everyone to build their own style and provides guidance along the way. It only has been 4 weeks and I felt that I’ve progressed greatly.

10th Planet Oakland is the place to be. Prof. Michael Hillebrand is a great instructor - he's patient and very friendly. He breaks down everything in a way that's easily understood and he wants everyone to succeed. The people in the class are very friendly and welcoming--you feel a part of the family from the start of your first class. If you're looking for a good workout, invest it here in 10P Oakland. You'll get a great sweat going and even better, you'll learn how to defend yourself.

Liking it so far. I’m about 50 and I’m hoping this will light a fire for my endurance. Unfortunately my balance sucks and I have a horrible memory. Mike’s a great instructor and helps me when I need it. I like the no Gi system although it does make me look stupid since I have little to no muscle. The only minus is that there’s no water fountain, classes are getting a bit big, and parking Sucks!!!!
