Mesa is a regular BJJ competition location in the Phoenix area, with events in the city and nearby Gilbert. Local leagues and fundraiser tournaments make up much of the calendar.
AZBJJL is the most active organizer, running the Grand Canyon Fall, Southwest Classic, AZ International Open and AZ State Championship. Veterans Breakthrough holds Gi and No-Gi fundraiser tournaments in spring and fall, and other events include the White Belt Rumble and the Grappling X Arizona State Jiu Jitsu Championships in Gilbert.
Gi divisions are slightly more common than No-Gi, and almost four in ten events include kids divisions. IBJJF rules are the most common ruleset. Adult entry is typically around $49–$104. Late in the year is peak season, with October, November and December the busiest months.
