Gaithersburg hosts some of Maryland's larger BJJ tournaments, with events also held in nearby Cooksville and Rockville. The PBJJF Pan American Jiu-Jitsu Championship and PBJJF Pan American Youth Jiu-Jitsu Championship have both been held here, along with the PBJJF Baltimore Winter International Open. Controlled Combat also runs regular youth and adult jiu jitsu grappling events in the area.
Nearly all events offer both Gi and No-Gi divisions, and around four in five include an absolute division. About a quarter of events have kids divisions. June and August are the busiest months, followed by September, with events also in February and October.
