Putting into words what Phenom has been for me over the past 7+ years isn't possible. My Jiu Jitsu journey has had its ups and downs as life has thrown at me the inevitable variables I have had to adjust to. Marriage, kids, career changes, injuries...everything a middle-aged adult can expect to deal with. The one constant has been where I train and the community/family I have surrounded myself with. There are many BJJ gyms you can choose from, but I assure you they are not all equal. Professor Martin is one of one. His knowledge of the game is something I equate to what Chess Grandmasters achieve. A knowledge steeped heavily in the tiniest detail of every move and body position required to execute a transition or submission. Coming from a deep lineage of the best to ever play the game, Professor Martin and the other Phenom Professors and Coaches bring a wealth of knowledge, compassion and a deep desire to see you succeed in whatever your path may be. If you are looking to start your journey into jiu jitsu I'll save you the headache of looking for answers. Come see Professor Martin and see where this wonderful sport and amazing family of enthusiasts and competitors can take you. Oss!

I’ve been to quite a few open mats in my BJJ journey, and I haven’t come across a place like Phenom. Phenom BJJ is great, I felt very welcome, the professor is very knowledgeable, articulate, laid back and kind. The team is very caring, and professional - no spazzes, egos, or territorial people - which for someone getting back into it is perfect. If you’re nervous, which I understand, rest assured. Just take the first step!!! - and Phenom will take it from there. 5 stars - I would recommend.

Had the pleasure and the honor of being able to attend class and open mat last night. Professor Martin was incredibly welcoming and technical. His students were fantastic, and very knowledgeable. I will definitely be back on my next trip to Irvine! Thank you!

There’s just too much to say about Phenom, Professor Martin, and the students here. If I had to summarize, I would say Professor Martin is kind, humble, and EXTREMELY skilled. Those qualities definitely flowed downwards to the students too! My son went to another school for several years and it was good, but the instruction here is on another level. We are willing to drive an extra an hour and 30 minutes, five days a week, to be here. If you want your child to do their best jiu-jitsu while building good character, come to Phenom!

I absolutely love this gym. Been training here for around 3 months now and I've been to other gyms and nothing beats this. Phenom has amazing professors and Professor Martin is my personal favorite, he's always checking in on me to see if I'm going to class and teases me for days I miss class 🤣 Gym has really great people here too, met alot of cool individuals and I'm looking forward to the future training at this gym. Overall super clean, friendly, and nicely themed with great professors to learn from.

They are the best. My son loves wrestling. He was going to Taekwondo. He wanted to try Jiu jitsu. He really like it. The teacher are awesome and so kind. If you or your kid(s) love martial arts I think this is the best one. This martial art will keep bullies out :)

Small, quaint, with personal attention is how the academy presents itself. It doesn't even have exterior signage. It's within Level Fitness. It's a loveable hidden academy gem. I really appreciate the personal attention and not left alone to my own devices. Regular feedback and facilitation are what I enjoy the most. It's a very welcoming environment.

Took me a few tries to find a place to get back into BJJ after 8-10 years off. Professor Martin made me feel welcome the moment I walked in. His students are humble and made me feel welcome. No egos. No bad attitudes. No pressure. Professor Martin makes learning new techniques easy with clear examples and communication, I signed up after one class. Love the family vibe. Highly recommend

Jiu-jitsu has changed my life! My professors here at Phenom have really made a big difference in my life. Professor Martin and Professor Jeff have really impacted my life in a positive way. They have become my role models! I always wanted to play a sport in high school but no sports really interested me. When I was introduced to Jiu-jitsu I was blown away. I am addicted. Jiu-jitsu has taught me how to be patient and how to defend myself when I need to. I haven’t had the opportunity to defend myself and I hope that day never comes. If there’s ever a situation where I will be forced to defend myself, I will be ready. I have amazing teammates here at Phenom and I will continue training here for the rest of my life. Thank you for all the support Professor Martin!

Highly recommend. As a parent I love seeing my daughter and son train at Phenom. The environment created at Phenom is welcoming and pleasant. All the kids work hard and the professors do such a great job of retaining their attention... which all who are parents might now how difficult this can be at times. Haha At Phenom I have the privilege to witness my kids growth not only in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu but also their strength, stamina, patience, problem-solving, confidence, and sociability.

I’ve been training jiu jitsu for the last ten years. During that time I’ve tried dozens of Jiu Jitsu schools. Phenom is the best school I have ever trained at. Not only for the amazing techniques that Professor Martin teaches but also for the love and hospitality I feel every time I walk though that door. Everyone is super nice and also really tough. Its always an incredible workout. Phenom has literally changed my life and made me a better person. I would recommend it for anyone who wants to improve their life. You won’t find a better school In Orange County.

*This is a review from a parent* This place is amazing. My son was 4 years old when he joined and my son has that prankster personality. He always jokes around, can't focus, don't listen, very bad with following directions. I was looking for a martial art class for him that can teach him discipline and of course, self defense! On the first day, I was very impressed with how awesome, energetic, & engaging the class is. They make the class very fun but the instructors do not hesitate to discipline the kids when they don't pay attention (not like other places when they totally ignore the kids who are just goofing around). It has been about 6 months now since he started, and I can see big improvement with his BJJ skill and his attitude. I am very happy to see how much my son has grown, and he loves BJJ now. Phenom is on the total opposite direction from my kids' school but I am planning to keep him in Phenom for as long as possible, totally worth it. It is almost impossible to find another place as good as Phenom. Prof Martin and Phenom deserve 6 stars.

This place is awesome! Martin and the other instructors are true professionals and masters of the art. They have a vast array of knowledge and ability to train others at every level. The facility is clean, well maintained, and is designed around safety with a cool appearance. There is a ton of camaraderie and everyone is respectful of one another, their experience levels, and watching out for one’s well being; while still achieving a high degree of pertinent training intensity. If you are looking for a place to learn the art (and real life applications), look no further than Phenom!

Awesome instruction from Professor Martin. He cares about helping you understand the bigger picture while teaching details that matter. I dropped in for a class and open mat as a visitor. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. I’ll definitely be back the next time I’m in Irvine.

I've been training BJJ on and off for 16 years on multiple schools. Professor Martin is not only extremely skilled at the art, but he also has a great personality and is an excellent teacher. The environment is fun and easy going. The training partners know when to get tough, but they also seem to understand when its better to lose a submission than to risk hurting a partner. The most abundance of laughter and camaraderie I've ever encountered in a BJJ school was definitely here.

Love this place. Professor Morachimo is great with kids. He makes it fun but emphasizes paying attention, listening and discipline. Adult classes are great too. The professor is great at what he does and it reflects in his students. Everyone is friendly and helpful and couldn’t be happier here.

BJJ is the first martial art that I really got into. For my size, weight, and mindset, it's seemingly perfect for me to train in this style! It relies heavily on pure technique and intelligence, rather than stength. Just by going a few days a week, I learn different moves, different ways to think, and so much more. Not only that, but I get a really good cardio workout. The people there are absolutely amazing! These are the nicest and most humble people I have ever met. When I first showed up at phenom, I was greeted and welcomed so warm-heartedly. Everyone does not hesitate to spend their time to guide and help you, even when you think you got it! Phenom is the best. Period. I've never seen anything like it before! I'm proud to be training at a place like this.

Phenom OC is a great environment for anyone who wants to try Jiu Jitsu for the first time or any current practitioner. The energy there is warm and a very friendly. It is a great place to train as a female and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Brazilin Jiu Jitsu. Professor Martin is one of a kind.

I live in Seattle but visit OC semi regularly. I have visited this academy on many occasions and will keep coming back every chance I get. Professor Martin is not only an encyclopedia of Jiu Jitsu knowledge but one of the most welcoming hosts of a school that I have visited. His students are all smiling and equally as welcoming. There is no better place to train Jiu Jitsu full time , if you are in the area and looking for a home school; or even swing by for a visit. I can't say enough good things about this place. I have the deepest respect for this Academy, it's students and most of all for Professor Martin.

Ging Jitsu

I use to and still review endless numbers of youtube videos for techniques in regards to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I got the fundamentals and many fancy moves quickly yet incompletely; however, I learned through training with Phenom's owner Professor Martin the little details, invisible Jiu Jitsu, that could make any position that much more effective. Through the past 3 years of training with him, he has continually shown me new and different techniques or details of those techniques that has revolutionized my game. Additionally, his coaching prepared me for many competitions but has never pushed me if I didn't want to be. Overall - if you are serious about learning the "art" of Jiu Jitsu... train with Professor Martin.

Phenom bjj is legit. Professor martin is a genius brazillian jujitsu practitioner and instructor. He is able to make you grasp and understand the true technique of the art. I cannot say enough about his passion and skill he brings to the mats. It does not matter what age or body type you are he will make you reach your full potential and more. The team trains hard but are very respectful and friendly. the facility is really nice with so many amenities which a lot of other academies don't offer. Come check it out!!!!!

I purchased the 10 class for my 7yr old. We tried the first class. The instructors seemed cool. Class was about 50min. After the class the instructor broke down the cost if I decided to sign on.. the he went on and said I would need to pay for the uniform if he wanted to continue the class. I felt cornered. (One parent told me his wife only paid about $60 for their sons uniform) but the instructor told me $140... once again i felt pressure. I paid for it. And he told me I would have it by the next class (I didnt) 2nd I called the next day because my son said he didn't like the class. So I called to get a refund on the uniform. (Never did he mention there wasnt any refund ) he said he couldn't because the patches are stiches on and that it's an route and that I should get the uniform wed. We well now it's Friday night and I still haven't got it .nor a call. I honestly want my money back... bad business.. I would Def recommend not buying a uniform from them... try Amazon it's way cheaper
