Highly recommend and impressed by 10th Planet Newark! Jon is an incredible coach who demonstrates admirable patience and focus on the students - whether you’re a beginner or advanced student, he creates an environment that is inclusive to all levels. He shows passion for good sportsmanship and being a good teammate in addition to emphasizing the importance of learning each skill accurately. My child has attended for 1.5 years and I am still blown away each time Jon walks in and a silence falls over the room as the kids immediately stop playing and focus on their warm ups to start class. They have respect for their coach and seriousness for the craft balanced by team camaraderie and fun!

Jon's teaching style is really thorough and insightful, especially when it comes to strategy and understanding the deeper aspects of each move. It’s great that he focuses on breaking down the moves in a way that makes them more applicable and practical during rolls. Many times, (for me) just knowing the technical details isn't enough unless I also understand how to apply them strategically in a live situation. Hopefully, other practitioners who may not have experienced that kind of depth at different schools will appreciate it too.

I absolutely love training at 10th Planet Newark! You could not ask for a better head instructor than Jon. He has created such a welcoming and friendly culture while also providing an environment to reach your full potential. His teaching is incredibly technical, and his attention to detail is remarkable—he will ensure we understand the most minor details that make the world of a difference. If you are like me and are obsessed with learning the proper techniques to maximize your skills this is the place to be. Most recently, I attended a competition to support some fellow teammates and was blown away by the team camaraderie. In addition to the supporting environment, I watched Jon run around non-stop coaching our athletes all tournament long. Alongside him, the other instructors are equally passionate, very knowledgeable, and dedicated to providing the best experience. Which is exactly what they provide. In the fall of 2024, my 6-year-old daughter started training here, and it’s been an absolute joy to see her gain confidence, make great friends, work hard, and push herself. She is not just learning jiu-jitsu, but is learning life long skills and it is a testament to Jon’s love of the sport as he teaches every kids class. I tell everyone that I won the lottery getting to train with the best at 10th Planet Newark. Highly recommended!

Amazing gym. Great instruction. Highly recommend. Jon and the other coaches are friendly, helpful, and are always helping students improve. I’ve been training here for 2.5 years and my boys started 6 months ago. We love it. If you’re looking for a place to learn, train and grow, this is it.

Have known the head instructor Jon for 20+ years. Extremely professional and very passionate about teaching. 3 of my kids have trained here for almost 2 years, such a great life skill and they absolutely love it! Wouldn’t take them anywhere else!
