Chris Rawlins Head Coach Owner

second degree Blackbelt

At 8 years old Chris began his martial arts journey doing Judo. He trained in Lau Gar Kung Fu, Karate, Muay Thai and boxing before finding Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2005 at Stevie B’s gym, where Braulio Estima taught. He attained his Blackbelt from Braulio in December 2017 and competed at White, Blue and Purple belt, winning competitions including The Gracie Invitational, British Open, Bristol Open and Northern Open. Since 2021 Wombourne Legacy BJJ has been affiliated to Mauricio Gomes. Chris teaches all academy classes with help from three assistant coaches.

Gareth Philpotts

Bluebelt

Coach Gareth was a gymnast who competed at national and international level and was a member of the national squad for 4 years. He is a qualified personal trainer, runs a mindfulness, mobility and breath work class, and has trained in Kick-boxing, Aikido, Judo and Russian Systema. He currently holds the rank of Bluebelt in Jiu Jitsu.

James Steele

Brown Belt

James began in Japanese Jiu Jitsu, then trained and competed in submission grappling and MMA. He joined Wombourne Legacy BJJ in 2019, progressing from Blue belt through Purple; on 22/07/2024 he was awarded his Brown Belt. He continues to train and teach at the academy.

Mark Westwood

Brown belt

Coach Mark is a 1st dan Wado Ryu Karate black belt who has trained in boxing, Muay Thai and Escrima. His Jiu Jitsu training started in the late 90’s under Mauricio Gomes; he later resumed training, achieved the rank of Brown belt and is an assistant coach in the kids classes.

Great place to train, I've been at the place for several years now. There's a great bunch of guys to train with, and there's plenty of air con/heating, helpful for days when it's either really hot or cold

great gym, i was slightly worried about starting a new sport but i was welcomed by the owner Hugh who introduced me to the trainers, i had a great time and will defo be going back when i can!

Great place with great ppl. All kids are friendly and so is staff. Value for money is incredible comparing to other places, as ppl who work there are really passionate about what they do rather than how much they take out of it (I think). I've been in few similar places and honestly couldn't end up better!

A BJJ centre of excellence without comparison. The head coach has created an atmosphere where BJJ is constantly being developed. Unlike other BJJ centres, which are more based on how much money you spend, Hugh puts his passion of BJJ over money. My daughter improved at a tremendous rate when she switched from another BJJ centre which was known by its brand name, but the prices were unreasonably high and not much flexibility offered. I'm so glad she made the move. Experts in Judo, wrestling, boxing and Thai boxing also teach at this gym. Great value for money offered.

All the coaches are great. All have knowledge of the sport and teach great techniques whenever I came. The gym itself is great and the student there are polite and easy to talk to and you are able to ask for help from them. Hugh is the receptionist who I believe runs it. He seems like an nice enough person, but the logic he has just doesnt make sense. As far as I am aware, Hugh himself has never competed, yet he expects his pupils to in order to grade... It seems like he is tryin 2 live his Bjj journey through other people which doesnt make sense. It is an sport that should be graded on you consistency and improvement in class, not winning medals and trophie. I visited a handful of times and this is what it feels like people in the gym understand yet go a long with it anyway. also, idk how much the gym is cleaned but the mats are sometimes full of fluff and stuff. they are abit weird and it would be interesting to no how much the mats are cleaned weekly. if u come here, you will learn the sport, but if u are a hobbyist, u will suffer because of the idea of competing being the only way to grade.

Brilliant place to train but absolutely appalling customer service from the manager Hugh. As a paying member of the club you get spoken to with disrespect and brushed to the side when turnstiles aren’t working you get told to get out and you’ll be dealt with later and when newcomers join you get told “why are you here? You’re gonna get hammered, this is your first session.” As a Newcomer how would that make you feel? And especially if you’re paying money to train at a gym And getting told “why are you here? Are you gonna get hammered?” Everybody else in the Gym is very Respectful and has manners, however The owner Hugh is a Typical Power Trip type of guy who thinks just because it’s his gym he can speak to people how ever he likes especially newcomers however he Wishes. This isn’t a dig at the gym itself and some of the coaches as they are brilliant however how can a gym be run by such an appalling manager? He needs to change his act as he will never develop as a club by carrying on being such an ignorant rude man. Hugh also Purposely create a divide and treat people that train upstairs Gi and no gi jujitsu Different To people who trained downstairs and only MMA. This makes you feel like you’re not part of the club, even though you’re paying membership. Sort your act out, mate. It’s not a good look. Again, this isnt a dig at the club or the coaches, just a dig at the manager as he needs to sort his act out and run the place properly.
