One of the most respected and highly regarded gyms in Virginia Beach and for good reason. This is a great place to learn Jiujitsu and a welcoming atmosphere for ages one to one hundred and one.
Posted 11 months agoVBJJ has a great environment for training. The facility is clean. The instructors are top tier and the staff is friendly and welcoming. This is home for my BJJ journey! I highly recommend anyone to stop by and check it out.
Posted 1 year agoWe love VBJJ! My son, Landon, has been attending classes for quite awhile and absolutely loves it. The coaches are all amazing!
They choked me...but I liked it P.S. all the negative reviews below are from some upset racist who got his buddies to spam the account.
Great facilities and even better people!!!!!!
My son (13) has been training jujitsu at VBJJ since May 2022, and shortly after, I started training too. At first, I went to the fundamentals classes and later on intermediate and advanced. Over the past 2+ years, I was able to get lots of impressions for almost all instructors and classes for kids and adults alike and would like to share here. The instructors are friendly, respectful, and attentive, and when needed: they are strict. Especially kids often drift away, but coaches bring their focus around and back on the mat. The adult's coaches are very professional! No exceptions! Sometimes, we goof around, but this is a martial arts after all, so safety always comes first, and all belt levels are encouraged to think in a safety first kind of manner. The promotions are entirely based on the discretion of the coaches and based on the skills that the students have acquired and demonstrated and NOT on the number of classes that the student has attended. Tournaments participation are encouraged, but never a must. For a brief period of time, my wife attended women's classes, but like we say here: it is not evebodys cup of tea. It is very hard and very tough and another quote: it is meant to be hard, but if you survive some discomfort here, you will become a lot tougher and survive in any situation that life throws at you. I have a close friend who both his kids train here and I am happy to say that I made many friends here too among the staff and among the students. I would recommend VBJJ if you want to learn the martial arts of jujitsu, grappling, for self-defense, or just for fitness. Many of the people that come here are military or with military background, first responders, police offers, etc. It is a fun place for friendly rolls! And if you want to bring the heat up... no problem: VBJJ has plenty of high-level jujisukas that are up for the challenge! Students pay monthly fee and can come as often as they want. There are free open mats every Sat and Sun. People from other gums come and roll and exchange skills and stories. The mats are super clean and well maintained. I have heard other places have problems with hygiene... NOT here! There are strict rules for hygiene, behavior on the mat, and rolls and everyone respects them... from the fresh white belts all the way to the highest degree black belts.
I’ve trained here for 3 years. The moment I walked in the doors I was treated like family. The instructors are phenomenal and so are all of my training partners. You won’t find a better environment than this.
Awesome gym! Clean facilities and fun environment. Very family oriented. My husband and I trained here for 3 years. Great instructors and training partners, we are sad to move out of state!
I’ve been with this gym for almost two years. I never thought that I’d like Jiu Jitsu the way that I do. The people at this gym have made such a great community and the classes are fun. Look forward to it every week.
If you are in the Virginia Beach area this is a top notch Academy! Professor Mikey and Scott are amongst the absolute best anywhere! Five stars isn't nearly enough. Everyone was nice and kind and absolutely amazing on the mats!
Awesome jiu jitsu academy with top tier professors. I was traveling from San Diego and they welcomed me in like I was part of the family from day one. Everyone there is very friendly and will give you some really good rolls. If you live, stationed, or just visiting here you should definitely train at VBJJ!!
The facility is clean and well-equipped, and the coaches are great knowledgeable, patient, and skilled. It's also very beginner-friendly, with a welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel comfortable from day one. Highly recommended for anyone looking to train, whether you're a beginner or experienced
Great instructors. Super welcoming for new students.
Trained here in June had an amazing gi class. One of the best I ever had get teachers especially professor Mike. Great place to train!
My son has been attending VBJJ for over 3 years now and he’s an Grey/Black belt. The coaches are great with the kids. My daughter is an Orange belt as well. The staff and Coaches are great and easy to talk to when you have a question.
My grandson goes there. He is very happy and feels more and more confident every day. The staff is very polite and pay attention to the kids' needs.
VBJJ has been a home away from home for my daughter & our family. Thanks to a friend of ours ( Amber & Shawn Rodriguez ) that referred us to help with our daughter’s self-esteem, discipline, and protection. Since then she has been under VBJJ for 3 years. They are amazing, professional, protective, affordable, & treat you like family. My daughter adores her trainers. I have recommended numerous people there & will going forward. Thanks VBJJ for just being you and holding a honorable establishment. 🖤
It’s interesting that the only negative comments were all left within the last few days. I digress. I love this gym so much. The staff and students are always amazing and the atmosphere that has been cultivated is second to NONE. My husband trained here and earned his black belt after many years of hard training. Our daughter grew up here since she was three years old in a teeny tiny purple gi. We’ve referred many friends here who adore the staff, professors and students. If you need to train in VB, VBJJ is a no brainer. Be prepared to be treated like family and to also work hard!
Best Jiu-jitsu in the area for kids and adults! Awesome learning environment and great family atmosphere, hands down! Top notch instructors for all skill levels from beginner to advanced.
Great school awesome people. Politics don't belong in jiu jitsu. Political groups that gear towards hate and division aren’t welcome.
Amazing gym that makes everyone feel welcomed. Recommend it to everyone I talk to!
Excellent gym, no ego, great instructors. 10/10
I want to share a few stats for those who might come across this and understand my review. I am a 42 year old at 205 lb powerlifter with a 575 deadlift, 515 squat and 335 bench. I have trained on and off with Jujitsu and a bluebelt. My blue belt was from another gym which I love, yet different in many respects. I was usually the strongest in my class and challenged differently. VBJJ challenges me every time I come to class. They have many different types of trainees and multiple individuals who are very strong. Everyone is there to learn, become better and are respectful. This gym rolls at the highest caliber and you will find one or many you will call friends and teachers. The owner, Professors Scott Oates, has built an environment of respect, friendship and a full list of exceptional fighters. I personally have found multiple instructors who have become my friends and teachers (shot out to Scott Horne!! and others of course). I am proud to be able to say I am part of this gym and train here.
Great instructors and students. Intense and competitive training.
Love this dojo. My mini wanted to roll on the mats but was too young. We patiently waited and watched her older sister train. Finally at 4 she was tested and allowed to start training. She took off with the coaches and now wants to start competing. The family here is amazing and super supportive. I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. Highly recommend for kids and adults.
Great gym a lot of Law enforcement and military that could share knowledge and expertise.
VBJJ is a great school with solid instruction and a warm environment. I’ve trained in many schools due to traveling for work. As a visiting black belt they treated me very well and were very open to sharing knowledge. If you are lucky enough to live in the area, you should give this place a try. Instruction is top flight, the owner is friendly and has an impeccable background. This school is well established and has a bench of strong upper belts to learn from and train with. Cleanliness was paramount here. . The kids program was well ran, and the younger students were respectful and engaged. With a background in corporate training and development, I know quality instruction and well ran organizations, and VBJJ checks all the boxes. There are many military and LEO in the adult class. If you are looking for a safe place to learn, grow, and have a sense of teamwork, you should give VBJJ a shot.
6 year old daughter needed to get energy out and some discipline along the way. The female coaches make the classes fun and she looks forward to class after 3 months. We'll be bringing her here well past that.
A nice friendly environment. A warm smile always greets my son and I whenever we show up! I love it there...
Awesome gym with awesome atmosphere. Serve LEOs and military too. 5 stars
Super friendly place, nice mats. I learn very very slowly. The instructor had no problem going over the techniques throughly with me. My partner and I loved this place. Definitely recommend
I highly recommend this place. The coaches are awesome, very kind, and know how to have fun. I feel very grateful to be a part of this gym.
My daughter trained here during our vacation. They made both of us feel right at home. She had awesome training and a variety of classes. We had a blast! Thank you for providing a home gym for her when we visit!
This is the best place to learn Jiu Jitsu, my granddaughter loves it.
Just signed my grandson up today! It’s been a great experience for the trial, can’t wait to keep the journey going! Everyone is really nice and they are patient and encouraging!
Great time training here while visiting VA Beach. Lots of mat space, good instruction and training partners. Thank you for having me.
Amazing gym , everyone is friendly and helpful. Never done any grappling before . Got to say the basic class was very detailed.
I’ve been coming to vbjj for a few months now and the whole staff and team are friendly and kind to help you improve your game. All around a great atmosphere to train. Recommend anyone trying to better their craft to check them out. They’ll welcome you with open arms.
Top tier training. Amazing environment. Highly recommend for all levels of jujitsu.
Came here for the week trial and 7 months later I’m still coming as much as I can. Amazing coaching, clean gym, and great people!
Dropped in for a couple days and had a great time! Thorough high quality instruction and welcoming people. Don’t skip out on the opportunity to learn and roll with this awesome group of people.
Dropped in while on vacation. Everyone was very welcoming. There was a wide range of skill levels and some great training to be had. I would highly recommend.
Awesome Jui Jitsu studio! Came in as a complete beginner and learned so much in just a week! Great instructors! Couldn't recommend enough.
Awesome place!!!!. As a beginner who didn't want to fall, im rolling all over the place. Beware of this one gurl Becky wit the bad hair. She is a spider. She lures you in and *SNAP* You buy a gi ans she refuses to do your laundry EVA again!!!
Virginia Beach Jiu Jitsu is for everyone! We have been attending VBJJ for over a year now and I am very impressed with the gym & staff. When the gym was able to safely open up during the pandemic, they took many precautions and made sure to throughly clean before and after class. The gym is opening up a third mat and will provide even more options for roll time for kids of all ages. My son feels part of the community here!
This has been a awesome experience for my daughter the past 3 months. It’s taught her to have more confidence in herself and self defense. I am so proud how the couches work hard with these kids. Recommend this place for all my friends kids for sure .
Dropped in while traveling and everyone here was very welcoming. The instruction was fantastic, the training partners were awesome, and I had a great time overall. Highly recommend to anyone in the area. Also, if your gym ISN'T located near a dope sounding street like WITCHDUCK ROAD, I'm not going. Get some training in near some fowl incantations, 10/10, will visit again.
Awesome place. Great atmosphere. My son looks forward to coming here every week.
Amazing gym! I emailed them about trying out a class and they let me try a whole week, even had a gi for me to borrow. Immediately signed up after that week!
My son started here about a month ago and absolutely LOVES IT! Even “the big tough coach” lol! Perfect match of fun and serious.
Just moved here from the SF Bay area. Jiu Jitsu has been a huge part of my life over the past 6 years. I quit smoking, got in shape and in 2018 placed second at the Pan American Championship. I'm not my best self when I don't train! Since Covid 19, all our gyms have been closed since March. To say the least I've been anxious to train since moving here. I trained at two other gyms in VB before finding this place. This is a competitive, friendly gym with world class lineage. If your any kind of interested in jiu jitsu, health, and making new friends I would definitely recommend Virginia Beach Jiu Jitsu! I'm glad I found a new home and am grateful to get time on the mats. Go train!!
Some solid jiu jitsu for sure! No easy rounds here
While visiting Norfolk, I stopped by VBJJ to check out their open mat. The athletes at the academy were all very friendly and welcoming. The academy has a huge mat space and is kept very clean. Best of all, their Saturday open mat was 2 hours giving me plenty of time to get a good training session in. I hope to visit again soon!
Best Jiu Jitsu in the area. Super friendly, but still hard training!
They have a friendly and honest staff. Will (instructor) has been great for my daughter learning and building confidence.
Both my son and husband attend this studio. They have both quickly adapted to the environment, made friends and have learned so much in a short amount of time. The amount support is just not found anywhere else. This is a very family oriented studio. I recommend anyone from beginner to experienced to give this place a try.
Me and my wife met Phillip and Jessica on a Grapplers Escape cruise. Good people and they always are very welcoming when we visit. Great atmosphere and skilled students and teachers. One of our favorite places to visit!
Excellent training. My family and I love this place. Great core values and family fun. 10 stars.
My daughter started and loved it and I loved everyone there so much I started too! It is a great family environment, with amazing teachers. I have become completely addicted and am getting back my health while having a great time.
The instruction at Virginia Beach Jiu-Jitsu is world class! They have multiple black belts and world champions that teach and train there. The kids program is exceptional. If you are in the area, do yourself a favor and go by there!
Best jiu jitsu place in the city!
I trained here last summer and the class was decent, but definitely geared more towards the higher belts and the new guys like myself didn't get much help. I've also heard recently that this gym has a reputation for kicking out members for their politics even if there are no issues in the gym. I wouldn't feel comfortable training there again and wondering if the staff there might be looking into my personal life.
I visited this school on vacation this year. Students were friendly but staff and coaches were not welcoming and made me feel uncomfortable as a woman with some of their comments. To top it off I got ringworm when I got back home - although no way to prove it came from there. Either way, Im looking for a new spot to visit when I come to the beach.
Really nice facility but the attitudes of some of the upper belts and coach’s made this a no go for me. Ultimately, not a good fit for a newcomer to the sport or to the area.
I dropped by this Academy while on vacation and I do recommend it, the instructors were very awesome and made me feel comfortable . Everyone just kept talking about new moves and focusing on the sport. Lots of great coaching between students calling each other great match it’s pretty wild. Just lied, I was never there lol One of the PF dudes asked me to write a horrible review
I just didn't feel comfortable at this gym. Instructors are like 3/10 as teachers of jiu jitsu, spend the rest of their time lecturing ppl on politics. Not coming back.
🥵 Man I can't stand the drama this whole situation is so messed up but after having dealt with this for a month I have to side with the students here the instructors and staff are so out of control I've been going here for a long time (purple belt) but I decided I'm not coming back I don't want to have to keep losing friends I made just because they don't align politically with the staff
This school was not friendly and I felt an unreasonable level of hostility directed toward me while rolling which may have something to do with comments that they made about the bumper stickers on my truck when I arrived. I reccomend stay away.
As a woman in jiu jitsu I try to be very aware of my surroundings and I just did not feel safe here. The instructors were a major part of it.
I had a very negative experience at VBJJ - the staff doesn't know how to keep their personal politics off the mat. I left.
Didn't have a welcoming experience. Wouldn't recommend to drop-ins and new students.
My family recently moved out to the area and we tried a few academies to see where we would end up. This location was by far the worst experience. My teenage daughter said that the staff gave her the creeps and made her feel uncomfortable. We won't be coming back here.
Always had a good time dropping in while on vacation, but recently learned they kicked out some people over politics? No place for that in the Jiu-Jitsu community. Wont be back.
School was clean and had decent jiu-jitsu, but very alarmingly, targeted and harassed one of their own previous students over political views. Really hate to see that in any public martial arts environment, not professional.
Still love the people, but I was forced to move my daughter to another gym because a coach destroyed her self esteem. I do not feel it was adressed properly and I still had to pay a break of contract fee even though we would have never left had this experience never had happened which was not our fault.
