The gym is spotless, and the pricing is affordable, making it a top choice for anyone looking to train.
I started training at Vandry BJJ in 2019, having never trained in martial arts before, and it's been a great. There is a good community and training partners, and safe instruction by William. I'm glad my bjj journey started here!
Outstanding bjj academy! If you want to learn traditional Brazilian Juijitsu this is the place. I have been training in this place for more than 20yrs. Travel 6 hrs every seminar for more than 20yrs. Professor William Vandry an extraordinary instructor with lots of experience and knowledge in the bjj martial art. Don’t miss out the opportunity to learn from the best!
This place is amazing. Professor Vandry’s knowledge on Jujitsu and his teaching methods are unmatched. He breaks down every grip, move and body position on everything he teaches with extreme detail. Students have different body types and different physical limitations depending on previous injuries they may of had and Professor Vandry has the knowledge and ability to tailor a specific style of jujitsu to match your physical abilities. His students are amazing to train with and many of his students have been with him for 20+ years. This place is the absolute best!
Professor Vandry has taken Machado Brazilian Jiu jitsu and has expanded it further. Master of leg locks and leg lock defenses. The academy is inviting and welcoming to new members, young and old. A family atmosphere amongst members. I highly recommend.
I have been doing jiu-jitsu for over 30 years and William is by far the best instructor I've ever worked with. If you want a great, safe place to learn jiu-jitsu with the best instruction...this is THE PLACE!
Over 2 years ago I decided I wanted to get into training BJJ. I put some feelers out at 3-4 schools around the area. Professor Vandry was the only one to call me personally to discuss the school and invite me in for training. Others either immediately emailed me contracts or never responded at all.
On my first day I knew the place was special, so I signed up. Joining Vandry BJJ was one of the best moves I've ever made. The amount of wisdom offered in this school by Professor William Vandry and the senior students is spectacular.
The environment is perfect for long-time training. The school's commitment to safe training is very important. There is a great community of people where everyone builds off of one another's games to continually improve each other's skills.
I have been training here for years. Professor Vandry has a depth of knowledge and the environment prioritizes detailed instruction, camaraderie, and safety. Five stars.
Vandry’s BJJ has been an important part of my life and my family's for over two decades. I first stepped onto the mats as a beginner in 2000, and I never imaged the profound impact Professor Vandry and his students would have on me. Since then, I've had the privilege of watching my three children grow up at the academy, experiencing expert instruction and warm community.
Even after training under Professor Vandry for so long, I'm still amazed at how much I have left to learn. His encyclopedic knowledge of techniques, his understanding of skeletal structure, the muscles and ligaments in the body, coupled with an uncanny ability to break down complex movements into easily grasped steps, teaches me something every week, even after all these years. Just when I think I've seen it all, I can walk into the gym and leave surprised.
Beyond the mats, Professor Vandry and the team have provided life lessons for my children, teaching them discipline, respect, perseverance, and more through the art of jiu-jitsu. The family atmosphere at the academy nurtures growth both physically and mentally. It’s almost like a therapy session every time I go to the gym. But also, those lessons help when you leave the gym. Monday morning calls aren’t so bad when you teach your self how to survive a choke from an incredible opponent. My family and I will forever be grateful for the positive impact of Professor Vandry and his exceptional academy.
In addition to deep technical knowledge and ability to teach Professor Vandry emphasizes safety and respect, which shows in the longevity of some of the long term students at this school. This is not a place where you will get injured and have to drop out after a few years. As an older student, I look forward to learning and growing and being part of this community for years and decades to come.
A Traditional academy in the era of MacDojos...
I've been training at Vandry Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for about 5 years. If you are looking for instant gratification, to challenge other meatheads in "open mat" sessions, to become the next UFC champion, or just a place to "roll around" in your fancy rashguard (most of the training at Vandry is done in Gi)...then this is not the place for you.
However, if you are looking to: travel back to a time when you respect your instructors (yes, you even bow to them sometimes), drill (a lot) to learn and understand techniques, train safely with great partners (yes Mr. Whitebelt, no heel hooks or punch chokes during rolling until you demonstrate control^^), and understand that there is no shortcut to mastery - that each rank is EARNED (like the old way)...then this might be the place you're looking for.
Professor Willian Vandry is a 6th degree Black Belt, and has competed (very successfully) in Pan-Am tournaments; he is the real deal. If it's any indication, people like Master Carlos Machado or Sensei Bas Rutten show up for private seminars sometimes...
So yes, it's not a "gym", or a "factory"...and a "small number of long term students" IS telling. In fact, last seminar there were ~17 Blacks Belts in attendance... Quality Vs Quantity?
You be the judge.
Professor Vandry is an excellent teacher. He’s patient, personable, shows us there’s more than one way to do a technique, and stresses safety. His class fosters a helpful atmosphere where his advanced students, who have been attending for years, also help newer students.
6th degree black belt William Vandry is nothing short of phenomenal. His expertise in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is evident through his patient guidance, attention to detail, and dedication to each student's progress. Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned practitioner, he tailors his instruction to suit your skill level, fostering a safe, supportive environment where growth is inevitable.
What truly sets Vandry BJJ apart is the sense of camaraderie that permeates the space. Fellow practitioners quickly become friends and allies on this journey. The positive and encouraging atmosphere empowers everyone to push their boundaries and achieve more than they ever thought possible. I've witnessed firsthand how the mutual support and respect among this BJJ community create an uplifting environment that makes each training session an absolute joy.
Whether you're looking to learn self-defense, enhance your fitness level, or simply become part of an incredible community, Vandry BJJ has it all. I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone seeking to embark on an empowering journey into the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Prepare to be inspired, challenged, and amazed as you uncover new dimensions of your potential – all while being surrounded by supportive individuals who share your passion. Vandry BJJ is a true gem in the realm of martial arts and personal growth!
I was lucky enough to walk through Vandry's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu's doors when I was a brown belt, after my original teacher highly recommended Professor Vandry. I had just relocated to Austin, and I was welcomed with open arms, like I had been a student there for 10 years. Professor Vandry provides such a warm, welcoming, family oriented environment. I am so thankful for Professor Vandry, his students, and his school. Not only were his students tough as nails, they were funny, friendly, and very safe training partners. Professor Vandry has been a blessing in my life both on and off the mat. He has helped me overcome som pretty serious injuries and stay active on the mat. Professor Vandry has a wealth of knowledge, and not just next level BJJ, he has an amazing understanding of injuries, nutrition, and supplementation, that he has helped me with personally. Professor and his wife are great people, that have fostered an amazing place to learn if you're looking for a home base academy in Austin.
My family has been rolling here for years. An ultimate high quality academy. I love it that Professor Vandry teaches proper technique and form. The kids class and striking class are also excellent! Highly recommend!
I’ve been training here over 3 years and the training and people are fantastic. There is such a great community and very knowledgeable coaches. The higher belt guys are super helpful and kind. Amazing place to learn bjj
This is the best school around for anyone looking to learn Jiu Jitsu. Professor William Vandry teaches almost every class and provides complete technical breakdowns of each technique. He has a deep bench of advanced black belt students who regularly assist. The classes for children are really good and very safety focused. There are kickboxing/ striking class twice a week. It’s the perfect place in Austin Texas to begin or continue your martial arts journey.
I love this place so much! They have become some of my best friends! I love the community and the training. I can't wait to get back to it! Miss you guys and see y'all soon!!
Amazing place. I love the people and the instructors, it’s a great community and lots of good training. As a teen it is great to be able to come to an amazing jiujitsu school that has such good community
Been going for years…there’s a reason. Vandry is next level, with a super focused and good humored teaching style. He has a ridiculously deep technical knowledge, a strong commitment to his students growth in the art AND to student health/safety. Students at the school are solid on the mat, very good at collaborating and building each others skill set up, rather than just focusing on grinding each other down for an ego win. Whether you’re a gym beast, cross fit champ, or someone who currently gets winded just walking down the road- honestly this is a really great place to grow/learn/train the right way, for a lifetime.
I have been at Vandry's for more than a decade and it is also where my Jiujitsu journey began. Austin has since had a influx of schools and great talents but I chose to stay because it has a hominess that modern BJJ gyms simply do not have. Instructor William is from a traditional lineage of Machados directly under Carlos and the gym is catered to a great group of day time professionals. I highly recommend this gym you're looking for kids class or friendly "roll" environment. William is a 6th degree instructor who understands the game's nuances more than many other run of the mill instructors. Safety is also a key factor as you choose your gym and this is certainly one of the safest environment and cleanest I have ever experienced.
Vandry Bjj is more than your typical BJJ academy. It's a healthy community with a common passion for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The Academy provides grounding in this fast past world we live in. I've been coming here for many years and it's inspiring to see so many lives change for the better.
Clean facility. Friendly and helpful students. Top notch instruction.
Not for "Muscle-Heads" or "Mat-Hoppers" just looking for a place to "roll". A legit, quality academy to train at and learn Jiu Jitsu from a top level instructor.
As a visiting student, I always try to stop in for a visit when I am in Austin.
I would strongly recommend Vandry BJJ to anyone looking for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the area.
GREAT TEACHER! GREAT PEOPLE! LOVE GOING TO CLASS! Hardest part about finding a good school is rolling with people who are trying to hurt you. Everyone here is respectful and they roll accordingly. GREAT SCHOOL!
Run away as fast as you can. I trained with William for about 1 year. Never before have I met a more unprofessional, sexist, and egotistical person. He even degrades his own wife Chandra in front of the class. Classes usually start very late due to William feeling the need to discuss his questionable beliefs with the class. Also the fact that he has been teaching in Austin for ~20 years, yet has one of the smallest schools and a small number of long term students should be telling. Save yourself the agony and go train at one of the other excellent schools. I'd recommend BTT, Brazilian Fight Factory, or Coopers MMA - all within a few miles of Vandrys, and much better schools.
