Amazing place to train around Appleton. Did a seminar on a Saturday and am highly impressed. Everybody was incredibly welcoming and the instruction was fantastic. Can't wait to visit again.
Posted 10 months agoTheory Jiu Jitsu Studio is an awesome and safe place to train. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced grappler, Levi, the gym owner / moderator, will have a plan to get you where you need to be.
I visited Theory Jiu-Jitsu while traveling for work. The atmosphere and culture were great. Levi has clearly put a lot of thought into building a gym that draws high quality students while providing a great environment to learn, explore and progress. If I'm ever in the area again, I will train again in a heartbeat.
Great place to train! Good instruction and fantastic culture & vibes
We were in Appleton for a week and needed a place to train... Levi was great! The place is clean, the vibes are good...and we'll definitely be back!
Super friendly and knowledgeable coaches and the gym has a really great culture. I highly recommend training here or stopping by if you're into no-Gi in the Fox Cities. I really enjoyed my limited time at Theory!
THEORY!!! Where do I begin!?? The atmosphere is out of this world. I walked into the studio with little to no expectations (also scared/nervous/all of the above 😂) and walked out with a big smile, a full heart, and absolutely fascinated with the sport. The members are so welcoming and accepting. Our instructor (Levi) is so patient, encouraging, and knowledgeable. It’s inspiring!! Class is always something I look forward to! So excited to see where this journey takes me! 10/10 recommend to any and all!
Very clean gym, great group of people there, and a very good mix of skill levels. The music is always on point there as well.
Such a great gym with great people. I came in as a beginner and everyone made me feel welcome. Love it here 🫶🏼
This is a great place to train! Levi is very knowledgable in the techniques he shows and welcomes everyone with open arms. There are no hidden fees, contracts, or odd uniform requirements and the community is very supportive of all the members.
Joined their Bjj class today as a total and it was a great experience. Clean gym and very kind people!
Visiting from out of town for a job interview and took a drop in class. Smart and efficient instruction and class structure. Great no gi jiu jitsu. Overall seems like a safe and positive gym culture. Will join here if I end up taking the job.
Dropped in for a few classes this week while I was in town & had a blast with the Theory Team. Everyone one was super welcoming & the coaching by Levi was great. Highly recommend!
Theory is a very clean and nice gym. But that’s not what made me love Theory. It’s the people in it that make it so enjoyable. Everyone is so welcoming and friendly. The first time I stepped foot in Theory, Levi rushed to greet me with a smile and welcoming attitude. Levi is a down to earth guy and super easy to talk to. You can tell that he is very knowledgeable and passionate in what he does. You will quickly become comfortable and excited to come back! I highly recommend checking it out!
My daughter take lessons at Theory and absolutely loves it! It’s a great environment where the most advanced person has no problem working with and sharing pointers with a beginner. My daughter looks forward to going every week! We highly recommend checking them out!
I came to Theory Jiu-Jitsu because I was looking to be more active while doing something I enjoyed, and I definitely came to the right place. Levi is a great instructor with a knack for giving demonstrations of techniques, complete with a thorough explanation that's easy to understand and replicate. There's a very welcoming environment at Theory, whether someone is a beginner just getting started or have past experience already. 10/10 definitely recommend Theory Jiu-Jitsu.
I moved to Appleton earlier this year, and I spent some time training at multiple gyms in the area. Theory was the newest of the gyms I went to, and I’ve appreciated being able to participate in a growing gym culture. I was a wrestler before getting into jiu jitsu, and the wrestling classes offered at Theory were also a big factor in my decision to continue training there. I am looking forward to seeing how Theory continues do develop over the years to come.
I have been training for a few years now and have been to a few different gyms in the area, and I haven’t come across one quite like Theory. The idea of walking into a new gym can be intimidating! Everyone at Theory is so welcoming though and I fell in love with the atmosphere and culture right away. There is a variety of classes and times too which was a big plus for me. If you’re on the fence about giving it a try I’d highly recommend taking advantage of Levi’s free class and checking it out!
I started at theory about 3 months ago and it's been an absolute blast! I had no experience but was welcomed right in by everyone. Very glad to be a part of this excellent community!
Friendly knowledgeable and welcoming to all levels
I have been training for some years now. I’ve bounced around (cross training) from gym to gym and have only found two gyms in the area that I actually like, Theory being one of them! Levi created such a welcoming gym that’s filled with actual good hearted people. Gyms are usually filled with big macho men that looks absolutely terrifying, which is very true for Theory as well (most of the men are giants compared to me) but they’re the biggest teddy bears ever! The nicest people in such a family like community. Nobody at Theory is out to hurt you, they’re a student trying to grow alongside with you. I’m happy I signed up and belong to another warming jiujitsu family!
Theory is THE PLACE in the Fox Valley for jiu jitsu. The community is second to none and has been welcoming and supportive from the first day on. I came in with zero martial arts experience, but Levi breaks down movements in a way that are easy to digest and apply. Everyone is more than willing to help talk through different techniques and help you along the way. Highly recommend for anyone who is looking for something physically and mentally stimulating and a fun, supportive environment to create friendships.
I've been doing Jiu Jitsu and MMA on and off for 16 years (unfortunately with way more off than on during that span). I have experienced so many different types of gyms, in that time. The ones that I have found the best are just like Theory, where the instructor is trying to build and foster a culture of learning. If you want to advance your skills in modern nogi submission grappling, you need to check out Theory.
This is a great place for brand new and experienced grapplers. Levi is an excellent coach who is very knowledgeable and passionate about sharing his knowledge. I really enjoyed this gyms energy and environment.
I have been going to Theory for about 2ish months now and I can say it was one of the better decisions I've made. Sure the first class is nerve wracking but Levi and the other members made it pretty easy to become acclimated! The gym is very clean and modern, Levi is always looking to update and make the member experience better. I have noticed that as members we have a good amount of imput as Levi always asks for opinions or ideas! I highly recommend stopping by for the free first class, it will be a decision you don't regret!
Theory came into my life at the perfect time. I was going through some struggles on the personal side and a friend suggested I try it out. I was coincidentally looking into all of the options for various martial arts studios in the Fox Valley and, not having any background in any form of grappling, it was intimidating to take on something new. Everyone looks angry if you look at pictures from other studios and this is a much different environment than the typical projection of Jiu-Jitsu. Levi and the whole group of more experienced folks are welcoming and pay it forward by working with less experienced people like me. One description of how this is mutually beneficial that struck me was that the more experienced people can slow down to work on perfecting technique while less experienced people can quickly improve through working with the experts. I've always felt like anyone more experienced worked closer to my speed to keep me reaching for more without feeling defeated. This is truly a community that promotes camaraderie and my problems seem to dissolve away while I'm at the studio, giving me clarity on some critical life struggles as I'm driving away after a fantastic class. I'm gaining a useful skill of self-defense, getting exercise, and having fun with my Jiu-Jitsu "family" all at the same time. It has truly been life-changing for me to get into this unique studio and I would recommend Theory to anyone who will listen. Nervous breakdowns avoided: 10 and counting. 🙂
I shadowed my husband (Ethan) at one of his classes the other day and after seeing what Jiu Jitsu was all about, I grew interested. Although I was nervous to start, I decided to go for it due to how welcoming everyone was, alongside some encouragement from Ethan. So far, attending class has been super rewarding and I’m glad to have pushed myself outside my comfort zone. I am very much looking forward to the journey ahead and if anyone else out there is looking to start their own journey, I would absolutely recommend they start at Theory! 😊
So a few weeks ago I stuck a toe outside my comfort zone and tried jui jitsu. Let me say that I have never encountered a group of people in my life that were the embodiment of kindness, patience, helpfulness and welcoming acceptance. The first day I was trying to come up with excuses not to go, I thought I was going to puke on the drive there. I'm too old (44), too skinny, list whatever insecurity may be rattling around in your head. I simply offer up this, go outside your comfort zone, try it. Whatever it is, find your it and do it. Soooooooooo grateful 🙏
Very Knowledgeable yet humble instructor. Great community. It's not just a bunch of meat heads that want to beat up on you. The more experienced people do try to help you learn. Also, they are not just giving away stripes and belts like some places. You earn everything you get.
If you’re in the Appleton area looking for a great BJJ gym, Theory is it! Lots of clean mat space for plenty of students to come train. Levi is excellent at teaching the important small details. He also shows variations to his technique of the day that I haven’t seen before anywhere else which is nice because it surprises my training partners when rolling. They also have an AMAZING wrestling program. Jordan is the best wrestling coach I’ve ever learned from! He has great observation of each individual and will offer suggestions or answer questions right away. I can’t speak highly enough about this gym. I drive up from Milwaukee now and then to train with this fun, knowledgeable, and welcoming team…that should tell you something!
I can't believe I didn't check these guys out sooner. I wrestled and played soccer for well over 10 years, then went to school, got myself a good desk job in IT, but got very out of shape over the course of 7 years. Last weekend, I finally committed to turning things around so my brother and I signed up for a free class. I got hooked instantly. Everyone is so nice, the instructors are knowledgeable, and all of them understood my condition and what I am trying to get out of class. I will be back in just a couple days and I can't wait. Thank you all for your awesome work 💪💫 10/10
I was visiting from out of town and looking for a gym to drop in at. I searched through a few other places, but was drawn in by the convenience of online scheduling and the promise of a free class for out of town guests. When I arrived, I was greeted by name immediately by Levi and welcomed with open arms. The material covered in class was well explained and any help needed was offered freely. I ended up coming to classes the entire week because everyone was so friendly and made me feel very comfortable. I would suggest this gym to anyone who wants to learn jiu jitsu in a positive and friendly environment!
Theory Jiu-Jitsu is an excellent place to learn the sport, make new friends, and have fun doing it. Levi is the reason why. I'm a big fan of the focus on no-gi!
Great training studio with great people
I am traveling for work and decided to drop on on a class at Theory. The vibe was really nice, rolls were solid and the instruction was on point. I picked up a few new tools for sure. I also found the website to be easy to follow and appreciated the clear instructions on how to drop in on a class. I’d like to thank Levi and the guys for the good work!
Awesome Jiujitsu! Professional Instructors! Family Atmosphere! Highly Recommend!
Top quality instruction and attention to detail!
I had the pleasure of training at Theory jujitsu Studio for a Roy Dean seminar last year. This place is immaculate and very modern. Instructor levy is welcoming and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this jiu Jitsu training facility for the whole family.
Great studio! Clean and inviting, really enjoyed my visit there! Levi is very nice and down to earth🤙🏻
Great, modern feeling Jiu-Jitsu gym. Levi is a very passionate and knowledgeable Coach whose love of the sport comes through in all of his instruction. You'll feel welcomed, encouraged, and will enjoy each session on the mat! You owe it to yourself to at least check out the free class trial.
This is a great Jiu-Jitsu place. Facilities are clean. Instruction is top notch. The culture is what sets the place apart. Absolutely friendly, helpful and very engaging. Highly recommended for all ages.
Visited Theory this week while visiting from the northeast and can’t say enough good things about the school. The atmosphere is very welcoming, the students were great and as for Levi the instructor he did an amazing job of making sure that I felt like part of the squad. His breakdowns of the techniques were very thorough and it was obvious that he really knows the curriculum that he’s presenting. If you’re ever in the Appleton area this is the place to go to. OSS!
Just wrapped up my second week of training at Theory and it’s been nothing short of AWESOME! I was a bit nervous heading into class the first day (virtually no real martial arts experience) but was welcomed and made to feel super comfortable and safe right away, which has continued every day. The overall environment and culture at Theory is amazing. Very clean and modern space to train in (also very affordable compared to other gyms). No big egos or intimidation type stuff going on, which I was a little worried about before starting. Just a bunch of incredible humans training, sharing tips and strategies and helping one another on their Jiu Jitsu journeys. I’ve really enjoyed spending a little time after class chatting and getting to know everyone too. Levi (our teacher) oozes passion for the art. His instruction is clear and understandable and he is very eager to help clarify things for those of us that need a little extra help. He’s an extremely approachable, fun and easy guy to talk to also, which is a big bonus. I’m so grateful to have began my journey at Theory :)
This is a great place for beginners and eperienced grapplers alike. The atmosphere and culter is top notch to have fun and learn something.
I want to preface my review by first stating that I haven't been to Theory YET. My review is focused on the owner/head instructor, Levi (which is the most important factor of a school's atmosphere and quality anyway). I have trained, taught alongside, and learned from Levi for years. We both started as students and grew through the Gracie system, and eventually became teachers at our own schools. I have been lucky to witness Levi's skill as both a student and instructor - both of which is done with a humble mindset and sharp skills. He has the ability to teach a technique in a manner that is easily understood by all, while also maintaining an entertaining and calming atmosphere. Levi's skills include both self-defense and sportive, and can be beneficial for all levels of practitioners - first day through advanced. I look forward to visiting Theory once my maternity leave is over!
A truly awesome place to train. I have been training here for about 9 months. Classes are great for all types of people from advanced to absolute beginner. Full of good and positive people. Levi is a passionate and very helpful individual who is truly an honor to learn from.
I had a great experience the couple times I visited Theory. I competed in one of their tournaments that was run very professionally. I also visited for a class while I was in town. Levi was very welcoming as well as the students. His instruction is very detailed and I enjoyed the class very much. The facility is very neat and clean. I would highly recommend this academy to anyone looking to learn BJJ or to cross train. I will be back in the future!
Levi is wonderful with kids and an incredibly knowledgable teacher. Our son has been loving the youth class and is gaining so many useful skills -- and having a ton of fun along the way. We're very grateful for Theory!
There is an excellent mix of information and instruction across the most popular forms of mixed martial arts. While jiu-jistu is the focus you'll also find a bit of wrestling, grappling, and judo in the programs at Theory. Levi has created a great environment for those interested in the sport of jiu-jitsu, while also taking into account those focused more on self-defense.
Theory came highly recommended to me from a friend. I was not disappointed as my son and I eventually signed up for classes together. My son has autism, so I was concerned about his participation, but Levi was very understanding, wanting to create a culture where all are welcome, which put me at ease. It’s been a great experience participating with my son in this, starting with only practicing with each other and then participating with others in the class as my son felt comfortable. As we gained more comfort in the class, I also have seen him mature, and our relationship grow. My son has felt welcome and safe in an environment where people may have much more experience than him, but they are willing to help him think through situations, and roll with him at his level, giving him confidence. I would highly recommend Theory to anyone that wants to even just try jiu jitsu, have fun learning a new skill with someone for fun, or someone that is serious about the sport. Levi does a great job on all levels, really relating to all that attend his classes.
I highly recommend Theory Jiu-Jitsu. Levi is a knowledgeable and very patient instructor, especially with kids. The small class sizes really help with the focus and attention to detail while training.
Excellent experience so far, especially for a beginner! Levi is an awesome teacher and his studio provides a welcoming and challenging environment to learn a new skill. I really appreciate that they also offer classes with a female assist, Jill is great to work with!
Outstanding atmosphere! Great instruction and attitude makes this a great place to train.
Levi is fantastic in the youth classes, giving easy to understand instructions, great demonstrations and positive feedback to each of the class participants. We are very happy with our choice!
I made arrangements to stop in at Theory as I was in town on a work trip. I've only been practicing Jiu-Jitsu for a few months at one other gym. Theory's facilities are very nice- great mats, clean, great karma. While getting ready for the class, two regulars came over and quickly introduced themselves and asked me about myself. What a great warm and welcoming culture! After the preceding class ended, Levi (lead instructor) came over and also introduced himself. The instruction was thorough, clear, and helpful. Levi is knowledgeable and able to answer any technique questions I had. It's clear that this gym welcomes drop-ins and new faces, regardless of skill level. Then, after class I had good conversation with other students and Levi.
This is a great place to train! Everyone here is fun and friendly. Check it out!
Came here for a seminar and this place is great. Levi was very kind and the regular members here are all very welcoming. If you're local and you need a place to get into shape, learn self defense, or just plain love jiu jitsu this is hands down the place to be.
Theory Jiu-Jitsu Studio is an absolutely clean facility, open to both men and women, catering to youth through adult age, and led by one of the most passionate instructors I've met to date. Levi Van Stappen didn't name his club Theory by accident. His methodical approach to the Gentle Art is inspiring as more instructors should follow his lead. His hospitality and graciousness to both me and my students is much appreciated and won't be forgotten. I can't say enough good things about Levi and Theory Jiu-Jitsu. If you live in the area check this place out, and if you're visiting Appleton drop them a line to get in a fantastic training session. Chris Mikuta AXT Jiu-Jitsu

Levi is thoughtful, insightful and so knowledgeable about the game of jujutsu! He is a master at his craft. I enjoy his teaching style of calm, controlled and helpful. I am very excited to learn more! The culture is super inclusive and really supportive no matter your size, shape or age.
I have been to 3 other jiu jitsu gyms in the past and this one definitely tops them all. Levi is very knowledgeable and makes everyone feel welcome. The facility is very clean and well maintained. Also, the training partners are great for whatever skill level you may have.
I came to Theory new to Jui-Jitsu and Levi has done a fantastic job at teaching. I like that Theory offers a fundamentals course and an advanced course, this has allowed me to ease in to the advanced classes at my own pace. The environment at Theory is very welcoming and promotes building people up. Overall, I would highly recommend this to anyone who has thought about trying Jui-Jitsu.
Super friendly and super detailed instruction. Everyone there is knowledgeable and just fun to be around!
As Wisconsin’s first and only Roy Dean affiliate school, Theory Jiu Jitsu provides a new perspective on BJJ training to the Appleton area. Levi has a wealth of knowledge in all areas of BJJ, including self defense oriented BJJ as well as modern sport grappling. The location is easily accessible and the mat space is excellent. Theory contributes to the region’s BJJ community by hosting unique grappling events. In this regard, the school’s openness to BJJ practitioners from around the region is a great asset to Theory’s students.
Beautiful space! A great place to practice the gentle art.
great school , great atmosphere 10/10
A clean and modern Jiu-Jitsu studio with a welcoming atmosphere for beginners and experienced instructors/partners for current practitioners. If you're looking for good place to start or continue your Jiu-Jitsu journey then look no further!
This place is awesome! I was completely new to BJJ and felt welcomed by Levi and the rest of the other people who go to training sessions. I will be going to his studio for a long time and it has quickly started to become a passion for me. Highly recommend trying it out!
An open friendly jiu jitsu environment! I Couldn't recommend it enough!!!
Love the fresh adaptations on an old art. Wanna be part of the innovation in Jiu Jisu? This is the spot for you in the valley!
Levi is a great instructor and it's a really warm and inviting environment. Everyone is there to help you put your new found words into conversation!
Check this studio out. You owe it to your family! My young son loves getting on the mat and learning new moves. He was hesitant at first because he'd never done anything like jiu-jitsu before. Levi and his team do an awesome job of helping all feel welcome and learn from where they are.
Theory Jiu-Jitsu is amazing in everyway. They are very accepting of new and experienced students. Very safe space for learning and growing in the art of Jiu-Jitsu. I highly recommend this studio if you are looking to master your skills or just get a good workout. Great people all around 🙌👍
My son, Hunter and son-in-law, Dilon, have been both challenged and impressed with Levi and his training, after years of previous Jiu-jitsu experience. Our 2 grandchildren, after just 2 weeks of classes are capable of self-defense moves every young person should know. I am amazed every class with how much is taught, how well they retain the information, how well it is being taught. The result is a family that, not only can protect themselves, but actually pursue an amazing career of jiu-jitsu. I would recommend everyone to check Theory out. Chele Boe 2/22/22
Great place!😁
Levi is an incredible instructor and mentor. He is detailed.; breaking down each posture to ensure correct alignment for maximum effectiveness and to minimize injury. Levi provides hands on, constructive feedback. The environment is inclusive and fun! If you are looking to for a studio to challenge your practice or a newbie looking for an alternative to typical martial arts, I highly recommend Theory.
I am a new student of jiu-jitsu. Levi and the students at Theory have been absolutely wonderful. They are welcoming, kind, and gratuitous with their time and knowledge. Theory has created a beautiful facility and culture to train in. I am very happy I chose Theory to start my journey!
I love going to Jujitsu class! It is fun and challenging. I've learned a lot about self defense, flexibility and it is great exercise. The instructors are really nice too.
Modern Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training and techniques in a modern BJJ studio. Clean, welcoming environment and knowledgeable instructor. Levi is fully invested into all things BJJ, dedicated to being on cutting edge of the ever-evolving art and ensuring those under his instruction are as well (while also crafting rock solid fundamentals). I've trained at several BJJ gyms and the culture here is the best I've experienced, the perfect mix of collaborative and competitive. Exploration is encouraged. Humility is a core value here. Advanced practicioners make a point to assist in the development of the newer students. Levi provides very detailed instruction, is always very open to questions, and happy to provide individual attention for those facing a challenge.
My daughter (9 yrs old, no prior experience) started classes when they opened and she LOVES IT! Very inviting and comfortable environment for learning!
My daughter is in the youth jiujitsu program and she loves it! She is learning concepts, techniques, and great information on staying safe AND she is having so much fun doing it:)
Classes are run very well with the perfect balance of techniques, drills, and live rolling. Levi is extremely knowledgeable and takes the time to explore, explain, and demonstrate techniques. The environment is clean and modern. I can already see improvements in my jiu jitsu game! I look forward to continue training here!
Great location. Brand new, very clean space. Welcoming environment and people. Owner/instructor Levi is a great teacher, meeting students of any level ‘where they are’ and sharing his passion for jiu jitsu with them.
Levi is bringing a modern philosophy and a community focus to Jiu-Jitsu. You cam clearly see his passion and love for this art which he passes on to everyone that trains with him. From the beginner to the advanced student Levi wants everyone to grow and practice Jiu-Jitsu to the best of their ability.
