We had a very positive experience signing my son up for classes! Everyone was very welcoming and supportive and they worked with him despite his initial discomfort to put him at ease. The administrative process was also very simple and straightforward. I highly recommend them!
Posted 1 year agoGreat gym with a welcoming atmosphere, especially for beginners! The instructors are great, and we have especially enjoyed being able to learn judo together as a family on Thursday nights!
Posted 1 year agoI enjoyed my time here very much. The staff was friendly and the classes were easy to follow. The structure was simple and to the point which was helpful to stay focused. I hope to return one day when my schedule allows it.
Posted 1 year agoCouldn't be happier with John and the other instructors at the Jiu-Jitsu Academy of Southern Maryland. My daughter was a student there for the last year and a half. She was 8 when she started with no experience and was tentative. John was patient with her and set her up for success. Her skills and confidence improved week after week. Teaching and helping other students is part of the requirements to advance to the next level - it's part of the culture there and one of the best things to watch in your child. Highly recommend!
Posted 1 year agoMy son and daughter have been attending The Jiu-Jitsu Academy for the past year. The instructors are great with kids – they create a fun, engaging, and safe environment that makes learning Jiu-Jitsu both exciting and rewarding. The curriculum is well-organized, balancing technique with discipline, and each class is designed to keep kids actively engaged while teaching them valuable life skills like perseverance and focus. My kids have gained confidence not only in their Jiu-Jitsu skills but also in their overall physical coordination and teamwork. The classes are a perfect mix of structured learning and play.
Posted 1 year agoReally great academy- love the instructors and other students! They are very patient with brand new students (like me) and the culture is all-around very welcoming and not intimidating. My kids have enjoyed it, too!
Absolutely loved training here. The instructors are great to work with and very personal. Instruction and class structure is excellent for mastering the skills. Very family friendly environment. Would definitely recommend to anybody that is interested in MMA, a good workout, or just a great environment to spend time getting in shape.
Great place to train for all skill levels, great instructors and everyone is friendly.
I love this place. Excellent coaches, and fun filled learning environment for MMA.
Great gym, great instruction. Morning classes with Josh are excellent.
This was my first BJJ and Judo training facility, and I had no clue how good it was until I moved and couldn't go anymore. Their instructors are the best. I miss this gym and everyone in it.
Grandson loves it. People very friendly and care about the kids. Highly recommend
Very kind and supportive staff and peers. It really helps boost confidence and you'll make great friends in the process.
Great place to train for myself, wife, and two sons. Very welcoming atmosphere for beginners, and great instructors. We primarily train with Beau on Saturdays in his "fundamentals class", which I highly recommend if you are new to the sport- he is a great instructor and a great all around guy. We've also had a couple of classes with the owner (John), and again great instructor, great guy. If you're on the fence about giving it a shot like my family was... just jump in one Saturday for a free trial- nothing to lose. No macho BS at all in the classes we attended- just patient instructors , helpful students, and quality training. This place is the real deal... very glad we found it.
I trained in the morning classes with Josh and I absolutely loved it! He is extremely knowledgeable and is a great teacher. I progressed a lot from training with him. I would recommend this gym to whoever is looking for a jujitsu/judo experience.
This gym literally has everything you'll ever need! Awesome instructions and everyone is very friendly, definitely would recommend this place to everyone!
I signed my 7 year old twins up in January 2022. The main instructor and owner, John, was very professional and his calm demeanor really helped my twins calm down if they got upset. The membership director, Kristen, helped us feel comfortable and was very knowledgeable. The price per month was extremely reasonable, especially considering how many days a week you can train. My twins were a little too immature for the class- they are very goofy 7 year olds- we are going to try back in a year or two when they are able to get all the benefits this gym has to offer!
Both my 11 year old son and I (39) have never done any form of martial arts before. After our first free trial class we were hooked. We enjoyed the inviting instructors, friendly atmosphere, and rigorous workouts and training. The instructors are patient and always make safety a priority, but they will kick your butt. Expect to sweat, learn a TON, and make friends that will push you to your limits to make you a better person and able to defend yourself. We have both left the academy for our spring sports and summer vacations, but are definitely looking forward to joining in late summer to continue training with the awesome Jiu-Jitsu Academy family.
Great Instructors, training in this gym feels like being with friends yet working towards achieving something worthwhile along the way …they work with you on all levels so that you you don’t get left behind and they will challenge you when needed…..good people, good sparring partners, great gym to learn BJJ and also additional skills that you won’t find in other gyms….they also have a weight gym that you can join for a small additional cost that works great in conjunction with training! Highly recommend this gym for beginners and advanced levels.
Instructors are both knowledgeable and personable! They are patient, thorough and professional here. This dojo definitely exercises each one teach one…
Great place to learn, has great instructors who help each person improve.
I love training at this gym. Everyone is very professional and they bring a good bit of discipline to the practice.
An excellent place for adults and children to learn. Love the instruction and family atmosphere.
My only attendance so far has been with Josh's day class and it has been a great experience!
Very welcoming environment. I was so grateful there was a place for me to train MMA/jiu jitsu. Though I’m usually more of a BJJ player, I loved this gym. The day class for adults is intense, and I lost twelve pounds in a month changing nothing else in my life except attending day class 4x a week. Night class is full of great guys who aren’t driven by hubris, but have fun training and rolled at my level. Learned some great skills for ground work as well as throws and striking. I appreciated my time training here and will miss it now that I’m moving away from the area.
Awesome place with awesome people. The only legitimately good place for jiu jitsu that I could find in southern maryland. Their facility is nice, they work with you personally on billing, and they reply to emails and phone calls. That last one alone, good god you would think that would be common but sadly it’s not. Try it, you won’t be disappointed.
Don't bring your child here, they claim their class will help develop the child's social confidence and mental development but will kick a 7 year old child off the mat for crying. Thanks guys! My child's confidence has now soared after being kicked off the mat, infront of everyone, after his 3rd time being there. If you can't handle a crying child, maybe don't allow kids as young as 6 to participate in a martial arts class.
