**Disclaimer: This may be long, but hopefully valuable for those seeking quality instruction and a great atmosphere"** Initially, I only signed my 8 year old son up for classes because I could see the impact COVID was having on him. Not being able to engage with other kids in person or run around with them outside on the playground was beginning to affect his spirit. He was becoming more introverted, gaining weight, and losing interest in activities he normally enjoyed. I knew immediate action was necessary, so I started searching and found Royal Martial Arts. First, I called and left a message. Then, I decided to hop in the car and do a drive-by. Personally, I like catching businesses off guard when I randomly pop up because they have no time to prepare, and I get to see what is going on when there is no awareness of "new people" coming to visit. When we pulled into the parking lot, Mr. Mike was just returning my call. I answered and told him we were actually outside. He invited us in and told us about his passion for martial arts, asked what I was looking for for my son, and provided more information about how his school operates. We were offered two complementary lessons before signing up and were invited to watch the class in session (BJJ). After watching the class, I looked at my son and could see his wheels turning; a spark was lit. We went to the counter and Mr. Mike gave us the rules and information sheet to fill out if we decided to return. THERE WAS NO PRESSURE and Mr. Mike seemed genuine. Once we left and got in the car, I looked at my son and he said, "Mommy, I want to come back here," with a big smile; he was hype. We came back for a complementary class and my son fell in love. As a coach, myself, I could see Mr. Mike was a great instructor. There was no mistaking the passion he has for martial arts as it is infused in his teaching. Great with the kids, Mr. Mike is patient with each student, encourages them while still pointing out improvement points, pays attention to details, is strict with form and technique (a big one for me), and teaches life lessons during and after class. After watching my son for a month, I decided it was time for me to sign up as well. I watched the adult class and knew I would love to learn from Mr. Mike too. As an athlete and competitor, running outside every morning and lifting weights in my home was becoming boring. Even though I was moving my body, I was not pushing myself the same way I do when I am working out around other people. It wasn't just the physical, but the mental challenge that I needed, a goal to pursue; and something athletic to commit to to keep my mind sharp and focused. I didn't need two free lessons to know this was where I wanted to be. The effort I put in during each class, the physical challenge of moving my body in ways I have never moved it before, and the mental challenge of learning something new after each earned belt, building on that knowledge, and feeling like I can be great at this if I keep going strong with an opened mind and heart is what keeps me coming back. When I walk in on a bad day, I leave with a renewed spirit. Six months later, we are still here going strong, getting better every class, inspired and motivated to practice our skills together to earn the next belt. I've witnessed my son make new friends, learn life lessons on and off the mat, grow in confidence, and work each day to live the Royal Code and Creed. As for me, this is exactly the mental and physical challenge I needed. We LOVE Royal Martial Arts. Commitment= Black Belt. Thanks a lot, Mr. Mike!
