I highly recommend Team Passos. It’s been an incredible experience for my kids, and I’ve seen such a positive transformation in them. I train at an affiliate school under the Tony Passos patch, but have always wanted to try a class here in Sterling as well. It can be a little intimidating, so I was waiting until one of my training partners could come up with me. Finally, just bit the bullet and showed up by myself. I dropped in for the morning class and Josh was teaching. It was a top-notch experience! Immediately, people came over and introduced themselves, making me feel like family. I won't pretend I won any rolls (that's not why I came here) but what impressed me was how safe it was. I am a 6ft, 250lb purple belt and have been to other schools where people are pretending it's the ADCC finals, and I stole their lunch money. At Passos, everyone was smooth, technical, and SAFE! (more importantly, they were willing to show me what they did so that I can improve.) I am sure I will be coming back many more times. Even in one class, I learned a few tricks to share with my unsuspecting partners once I returned to my home school. Simple recap: the gym is clean, fun and very welcoming. The instruction is phenomenal. If you are in town, you should try it. The only thing you will regret is not trying them out sooner!
I had the pleasure of dropping into Team Passos to train at their 10AM class recently and had the experience one could hope for. I signed up for a free trial at team Passos yesterday. This was my first time trying jiu-jitsu and I am happy to share that I had an awesome experience. Everyone in the gym was kind and welcoming. Jason was gracious with his time answering all of my questions. Professor Josh, professor Paul, and coach Rob took extra time explaining technical details to me.The students were also helpful explaining positions and did not go hard on me. Conditioning is part of the class so you will get a good workout.
It was a great experience visiting the academy last night. It’s fully accessible for wheelchairs with lots of open space to get around. The level of Jiu jitsu is top shelf and the hospitality was just as inviting as the academy. I will be back again!
We started out with 2 of our kiddos in JJ here at Team Passos and within a year our youngest asked to join. We have had such a fantastic experience at this studio for the last year and a half and see such a joy in our kids as they learn and improve their skills. The coaches are extremely invested in getting to know each student and their personalities/strengths/growth areas. There’s no coddling, but the kids learn discipline in an uplifting way. I can’t say enough about this studio- the culture, each of the coaches, and the methodology are all so needed in all kids. Mine have become more confident and compassionate from being around their role models here. So grateful for the dedication of these coaches, but a special nod to coach Josh for his passion with kids!
I had an incredible time at the all women's training on 2/3/24! The facilities are impeccably clean, the staff and the students were welcoming, and the coaches were skilled professionals. If you are looking for a BJJ gym....... THIS IS IT. Hands down this is the best in the area.

A relative invited me to take a free demo intro level class here, which was an awesome experience from a very welcoming coach to easy to understand movement practices which resulted in getting quite a workout. I'd have signed up if I didn't live so far away. Given this review is from only one session, recommended at least checking this place out for yourself!

I traveled to VA from Georgia for training and upon visiting as a drop in visitor I was immediately treated like a part of the family. The staff was very professional and courteous and the guys and gals on the mats were very chill and helpful and accommodating. Professor Passos was extremely detailed, patient, and systematic in his instruction and gave everyone feedback and direction to ensure proficiency. This was definitely a great place to train and I will be coming back when I have future trainings in VA. Keep up the good work. OSS!!!!

The Team Passos instructors really take the time to invest in you to get the techniques as good as you possibly can. You get a good balance of drilling them and rolling so they stick with you. This school has the best learning culture out of any I have been to. Would recommend this school to anyone that wants to give BJJ a shot or if you have experience.

Highly recommend! I'm a travel physical therapist and white belt that was with Team Passos from December 2021 to September 2022. I was practicing BJJ for a month in PA before I came to northern Virginia and was looking for the best option in the area as a new student of BJJ. As someone who only had 1 month of BJJ experience I wanted to try out the large variety of options in the area. I came here first and was impressed with how precise and clear Professor Megan's instructions were. I tried multiple other schools in the area after going to Team Passos for a night. At the other schools I used the mount technique on other white belts and no one was able to defend against it. Additionally none of the other lessons from the other schools felt as clear, effective, and/or planned out as Pressor Megan's lesson and demonstrations. I and very happy with my decision to stay with Team Passos during my extended contract in the Sterling area. I feel I have built a great foundation to continue my BJJ journey as I take my next travel PT contract. I would say the only considerations for potential students looking for a place to practice BJJ is there is not any NoGi classes at the school and you do have to wear a Gi with a team passos logo sewed onto the back.

I have been in a very busy period of life, but am still making time train here with Team Passos - and it has been worth every penny. These people are experts at Jiu Jitsu and experts at community building. The intentionality and hospitality make this place special. When I moved to the Herndon/Sterling area, I went to five different BJJ gyms to see which one I wanted to train at. Team Passos BJJ was by far the best of the five that I visited. I have now been training here for just over six months and am glad that I picked Team Passos to embark on my BJJ journey. The instruction is top notch. All of the staff are very friendly and approachable. Classes are a good mix of conditioning, technique drilling, and live sparring. Instruction is very clear. I can see my skill level progressing. The atmosphere at the gym makes it very easy to stay motivated to maintain consistent attendance. I would recommend this gym to anybody regardless of experience level, size, or age. It is a very diverse gym and easy to feel comfortable.
Team Passos is the preeminent jiu jitsu academy in the DMV. All the coaches and staff are caring, knowledgeable and great at running the academy. Professor Josh is particularly amazing and has an impressive teaching style. Amazing program with wonderful staff
I have loved training at Team Passos for the past year and would recommend it to anyone interested in bettering their jiu-jitsu. They have an amazing team of high level coaches who are all very adept at explaining difficult techniques. Classes are lead with a structured curriculum that allows you to develop new skills through repeated practice. Having previously trained on a team made up of mostly men, I appreciate having a group of women to train with who are so supportive and inspiring in each of their own ways (and more my size haha).

I have been training at Team Passos for 9 months now, and it has been an amazing experience. I started out in the kids class which I really enjoyed since all the instructors would explain the drills well enough that every kid, all different ages, in that class could learn it. After a couple months of training in the kids class I moved up to the adult fundamentals. The adults class and kids class both have a common theme. Every instructor who teaches or helps out makes sure that everyone understands the technique while being safe, and everyone is treated like family.
Kids have the ability to find their strength and heart with an encouraging and motivating environment. They are known and valued!
I have been training at Team Passos for three months, and there is no way I can fit all of the positive aspects of this Academy into one review. So, I will focus on the Academy's staff, facility/curriculum, and general atmosphere. The Professors and coaches are top-notch. They take the time to get to know you as a person and student. I started training at another academy, and my interaction with the coaching staff/leadership was limited to on-mat instruction, which made me feel like they did not care if I showed up for class. The leadership and coaches at Team Passos are the complete opposite. I feel like they are genuinely interested in understanding what I hope to accomplish with my training and, more importantly, how they can help get me to where I want to be. They also know everyone's name, and there are quite a few students across the Academy's programs, which further illustrates that you are not considered another tuition payment at Team Passos. The facility is fantastic. The entire facility is immaculate and well-maintained. The curriculum is comprehensive and allows students to progress at their own pace. The Professors and coaches (and training partners) are patient and go out of their way to make sure you understand the concepts and techniques you are learning. The atmosphere is welcoming. I read a lot about what it was like to begin practicing jiu-jitsu before I finally committed to taking a class. I read many articles and anecdotes about how jiu-jitsu is very cliquish and unwelcoming for beginners. My (brief) experience at my first school validated everything I read, which is why I left. Again, Team Passos is the complete opposite; the Academy feels more like a community than a gym. I highly recommend Team Passos to anyone looking to begin or continue their journey in jiu-jitsu.

I walked into Team Passos an out of shape 44 year old with two very small kids at home. I very much needed a change and a challenge. 3 years later I am calmer, in shape, more confident and have a whole new group of friends (and skills!) This is the best academy in the Nova area regardless of your goals (some people drive more than an hour AND past many other academies to come here). They have an extremely competitive track, but also have a track for a hobbyist like me. There are a few things that stand out to me about this academy. 1. They have A LOT of people who come here from other academies because the quality of instruction is so high and the culture is so welcoming. This is by any measure a team and family environment. 2. The coaches reward commitment with their commitment. It's easy to get side tracked in life with kids, work, and other things. The coaches keep you committed and accountable in a very friendly and encouraging manner. 3. As a more mature practitioner my goals are different from a younger player, and I also tend to get dinged up easier. The coaches and teammates are aware and work around minor bumps and bruises. It's not uncommon for a coach to walk by and say "don't go on his left arm, it's a bit dinged up" which is good because they know how to push but not push too far based on the individual. 4. I grew up doing old school karate, as an older guy the pageantry and rigidity of traditional martial arts was not appealing aka 'yes sir, no sir', katas, all the yelling. BJJ is a such a refreshing culture, it's deadly but so much more collegial, less hierarchical and much more team oriented. This mentality is embodied from the top down. The owner Tony is a charismatic force of nature with every person, friend and parent who walks in the door. I also got my 4 and 6 year old daughter into their kids program called Zoojitsu. If I 5/5 star recommend this academy for adults, I will 10 star it for kids. They have figured out the magic formula for the kids classes, they are fun, team oriented, safe, but challenging. Prof. Josh runs the classes and is a natural at running an engaging kids class. My daughters have grown tremendously with this program. Their athleticism, coordination, confidence and strength is 1-2 years above their peers. My 7 year old dominates the soccer field because she is so fast and unafraid. My experience over the past two months in the Adult Fundamentals program has been amazing. The curriculum is comprehensive and the environment allows you to progress and develop at your own pace. My 7 year old daughter has been with Team Passos for 1 year. She was indifferent with her previous academy but immediately loved Team Passos. There is a sense of community and family here. Professor Tony, Coach Josh, Coach Andrew and Jason all treated my daughter as if she were their own. She loves Coach Josh, the lead instructor of the kid's program. He is kind and patient yet firm in his teachings. Professor Tony is encouraging and always has a smile on his face. The environment is great for kids to learn and have fun. I was very disappointed that we could not continue with Team Passos. Unfortunately, our move made the commute impossible. My daughter cried after her last session! I highly recommend Team Passos! We would surely return to them if it were possible.
Team passos was everything and more I've been looking for in a gym from the method of training to the training partners to how dedicated their staff and students are to jiujitsu and helping people be better version of them self everyone was so welcoming and willing to help such a good environment to be in to grow glad to have chose team passos definitely will always stop down to train!

I didn't start training Jiu Jitsu until I was 56 years old, and I am now 62. I love training at Team Passos because of their world-class instructions of concepts, not just technique, the professionalism of the staff, the quality and toughness of the students, and the comradery with all. Clean academy, good people, high level very challenging BJJ. Three years ago I started my 9yo son here. I started training two years ago. Now it's basically my second home.

What can I say about this place?! The passion and excitement that Professor Passos and his coaches have for jiu jitsu is contagious. I've trained at other places and you will not find a place that is more professional than Team Passos. The academy is spotless and cleaned often. Your training partners always show up and push you to become better. The details in Professor Passos's technique will help you grow, regardless of your style of jiu jitsu; they really do care about your progression and value your time. Team Passos is also an ambassador for the community and they give back to those that are less fortunate. Before I started training here, a friend that previously trained with Professor Passos told me that he was just a genuinely good person. Now having trained here for the last 8 months, I wholeheartedly agree.
Beautiful facility with top notch instructors. I train at a "sister" school closer to my home -- Infinite Fighting Concepts in Gaithersburg, MD. Professor Tony will often visit our school and teach seminars. It's clear that he has been teaching and training for a long time; he knows just the right way to describe complex move and make them effective for a novice. What I like about his school in particular is that there is a large female presence. One of the instructors is a woman with a brown belt! Occasionally, Team Passos will hold women-only seminars, which is nice in this male-dominated sport. Like Infinite Fighting Concepts, I like seeing that the instructors are also successful competitors. If you Google regional Brazilian jiu jitsu competition results, Team Passos is consistently at the top. I'm proud to be a part of this family.
I have been training at Team Passos since September of 2016. It is hands down the best gym in the area. Whether you are a competitor, looking to get in shape, looking for a good family environment and activity, or really anything else, Team Passos is a wonderful place to go. Everyone here is kind and welcoming. It’s never too late to try something new and you won’t regret your choice if you come to Team Passos. It’s like a second home for me and all the people that train here. All the instructors are professional, extremely talented at teaching the art of Jiu Jitsu, wonderful people, and will do anything to help their students and fellow teammates grow in life and on the mat. Professor Tony is a gifted coach. Highly recommend Team Passos Jiu Jitsu.
Four years ago, after observing 3 local Jiu Jitsu schools, we enrolled our then, 8 year old son, at Team Passos Jiu Jitsu. We were impressed with their program, as well as the cleanliness of their studio. We wanted our son to become more physically agile and build endurance and stamina. The program provides a challenging workout with agility drills, in addition to teaching the children important Jiu Jitsu skills. Some schools only work on demonstration/slow choreographed Jiu Jitsu techniques, while Team Passos puts them into regular practice with student on student grappling/rolling. The instructors are a friendly, fun and dedicated team. The student work respectfully and cooperatively with one another. The classes are structured with multi-leveled training which is very helpful in the learning progress of children. A lower ranking student can learn a lot through the techniques and patience of the more advanced kids. The program schedule is flexible, offering multiple children’s classes, where you can train multiple times a week if you wish, and progress at your own rate. When a student progresses to a higher level or belt by putting in hard work over a period of time, his/her peers and coaches cheer and clap, as that student receives their stripe or new belt. I have seen many kids come in over the past 4 years who may not have started off the most physically fit or confident, transform into mentally/physically stronger individuals. There is a real sense of community here. I highly recommend Team Passos.
My family and I started training at Team Passos 2 years ago and we cannot be more pleased with every aspect of this gym. The professors, classes, staff, students and overall experience is world class all the way! As someone who started jiu jitsu much later in life (mid 40's), and as a female, I was very nervous about the prospect jiu jitsu, but Team Passos welcomed me and my family with open arms and I've felt safe, challenged, and at home ever since!
World class coaches! My son has been training for just over two years and coming here has helped his jiu jitsu tremendously... a wonderful team who take the time to learn about the child, the atmosphere is a perfect blend of team work, hard work, and fun! finally the team at team Passos are professional, friendly and eager to help the kids where they can! Overall a great place for kids to come out of their shell gain confidence, and the best place to develop a new skill in jiu jitsu. Give it a try your kids will thank you!!
Tony Passos and everyone else at Team Passos really creates a great community of upstanding individuals who train and help elevate the people around them. The coaches Josh, Andrew, and Tony not only make you feel welcome but push you to do your best in all aspects of jiu jitsu. Whether it's on or off the mats, they provide a unique opportunity to grow with a very special approach to the art of jiu jitsu. The Academy is clean and safe. It is clear that immense care and love has been put into making sure that it is in the best condition for all it's members. The members are all welcoming and friendly everyone is there to help each other reach the next level. It's this togetherness that makes this academy feel special and unlike any other. When you train at Team Passos you know you are in a very unique jiu jitsu academy. I strongly recommend if you are looking to train jiu jitsu, that you train here. There's no place quite like this. It's truly a shining example of what a martial arts academy should strive to be.
Team Passos is great. Everyone here is humble and kind. They make everybody feel comfortable with the drills and the teaching that they do here. I myself have to say that I’m enjoying learning jiu jitsu from our instructor Professor Josh, great with instructions on how to do the drills. Also people such as Andrew and Jason who work here always there if you need to ask questions about certain things or just need help.Overall great people. Join Passos!!
I've been training at Team Passos since July 2019, and I wish that I had started long before that. I was apprehensive for many years to try Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, for a variety of reasons. Mostly because I thought that it would be beyond my ability. Those fears were all for nothing. What I found at Team Passos was an extremely knowledgeable team of professionals, who not only taught the art of BJJ, but also conditioned the body with a comprehensive warm up session. Each class is a challenge, mentally and physically, and is exactly what I was looking for in a Jiu Jitsu academy. From the moment class begins, until the end, is filled with instruction, practical application and development, not one minute is wasted, and all students, no matter their capability, are mentored and provided the necessary tools to perform. Again, I can't recommend this academy enough, and encourage anyone who wishes to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to join Team Passos. This is not a corporation looking to boost numbers, but has become a branch of family tree, and I couldn't be more proud to wear the patch on my back.
I have been training at the academy for eight years and it has been an amazing experience. Everyone is welcoming and genuinely interested in you picking up technique, learning and understanding the game of Jiu Jitsu. The technical instruction is detailed and broken down into digestible parts, which is then overlapped with the movement theory behind each portion. Tony and staff are all top notch. If you've ever considered Jiu Jitsu at all, this is the place to get started.
I tried several schools before choosing one. This facility has (a) very limited sparring / open mat and (b) very limited interaction between levels. It will take 3 times as long to get good here. Also it is gaming Google reviews and -obviously- pushing students for 5 star reviews.
