Joey has to be the absolute best instructor there is! This new facility is going to become a game changer for the BJJ community.
What an amazing place. Honestly. We went from one kid in jujitsu to all 3 of our girls are now doing a mix of kids classes and my older 2 are starting adult and womens classes. We love it here. 10 out of 10 would recommend ! Amanda and Joey are phenomenal with both children's and adult classes!!!
Great trainers, super friendly to beginners. Very welcoming and chill environment.
I love this place. Joey is literally the BEST. He is a literal PanAm Champ
Best place to learn Jiu Jitsu in Tampa. Joey prioritizes safety and technique in a welcoming environment. The schedule is set up in a way that allows those who work typical business hours to still make it to class in the mornings or evenings. Once my daughter is old enough, I plan on enrolling her in the kids classes as well.
A great place to train with great people abs great vibes!
Hands down the best place to learn Jiu-jitsu in Tampa and surrounding areas. For the last decade, I've been fortunate enough to learn from professor Joey. His knowledge and dedication to Jiu-jitsu is unrivaled. His instruction is clear, precise, and very thorough. You can be confident that you are learning all there is to know about the positions , how to maintain them , and how to transition to other areas and aspects of jiu-jitsu, from escapes to finishes and everything in between. Professor Joey is constantly learning and searching for new techniques and concepts to improve the game of both his students and himself. What that means is that he can teach the tried and true fundamentals of the game as well as the new techniques that are relevant in today's game. Furthermore, and most importantly, Tactics jiu-jitsu is a SAFE PLACE to learn martial arts. When I first set out to learn Jiu-jitsu, I tried another local school before I found my home under Professor Joey's tutelage. I had some basics , and because of this the head instructor was under the belief that I was training at another school and was there to "steal" techniques and training methods. I was put to roll or spar with a purple belt who immediately put me in a technique called a toe hold, which is illegal to do to white belts in the gi. He popped my ankle, and right after the head instructor gave me his spheal about how people come from different schools trying to steal techniques from him. He didn't take my money and told me to come back and i could sign up then.... I walked out of that school limping and although I wanted to go back and continue learning, I physically couldn't. Even with my lack of knowledge of the rules and regulations at the time, I couldn't help but feel like it was done on purpose. After I became a purple belt under Professor Joey, I was 100 percent sure. There is no way I could accidentally toe hold a white belt in the gi at the purple belt level... When I first started learning under Joey , I pretended not to know anything because I was traumatized by my previous experience at the other school and I genuinely wanted to learn. THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN TO ANY ONE AT TACTICS JIU-JITSU! Professor Joey has provided me with a SAFE PLACE to hone my skills. I am now a blackbelt under Professor Joey and I still continue to train here to this day despite me having my own academy (Torres Top Team BJJ) He is the teacher's teacher!!! With head instructors from surrounding areas coming here to train!! I have never needed to go anywhere else and i try to emulate the vibe that Tactics Jiu-jitsu provides. In my early days , in contrast to my first experience at another school where I was hurt on purpose, the higher ranking students guided me and taught me alongside Profesor Joey. He has also been there for me during competitions, traveling for hours to coach me to victory and even across state lines! Training here has been life changing for me and I could go on and on and it would still do no justice. You will find your home here just as I have 😊. Thank you for everything over these past decade !
In town for work and tried out tactics. People were very welcoming and professor was extremely knowledgeable. Could not ask for more.
I had the privilege of training with Professor Joey Best while I was in the area preparing for the Pan Americans. I was immediately impressed by the attention to detail in every technique taught and he was very attentive to every student, whether new or seasoned. I have been to a few gyms over the years I have trained, and the overall team environment and sense of community that he has fostered is something that is rare to find and is a testament to his ability as an instructor. If you are looking for high quality instruction in an environment that is safe and welcoming I highly recommend Tactics Jiu Jitsu.
I’ve been learning Jiu Jitsu from Joey since 2015 and ive been at Tactics since the first day it opened. I’m a business owner who is extremely picky about who and what I pour into because like most people I consider my time valuable. I’m no world champion but I do leave every class feeling like it because of the people around me. Great variety of colored belts including black belts on the mats every day to train with if you’re more advanced and looking for friendly competition or just starting out and need someone experienced to help you. Can’t say enough good things about this group of people. Temple Terrace is lucky to have Joey and Amanda opening its doors there. Try out a class, you won’t regret it.
Professor Joey Best is an outstanding jiu jitsu practitioner and instructor. He's extremely patient and thourogh in his teaching and makes it a point to lead with respect. Although I'm out of state, he has played a foundational role in my jiu jitsu journey and I always look forward to making the trip to train under him. The amount of high level women that train here also speaks volumes to his character and the environment he has created. His wife Amanda also contributes greatly to this incredible atmosphere. Tactics is clean and the energy is refreshing and uplifting. I would highly recommend Tactics Jiu Jitsu to everyone at any age and skill level.
Learn Jiu-jitsu from one of the BEST at Tactics! I’ve known Joey & Amanda since I started my Jiu-jitsu journey 16+ years ago. Joey is a very detailed instructor & teaches techniques that work for all sizes against bigger opponents! Not only is Joey a quality person, he’s fully capable of guiding you to Black Belt. The only missing piece is YOU!
Joey is an amazing instructor that knows how to pay attention to details for the smaller player. He treats all students who walk through the door with respect and genuine enthusiasm to help them learn and become better at jiu Jitsu. Joey creates a safe environment for women who wish to train, which is a big deal in the community. Inclusive, welcoming, respectful and supportive are only a few of the words that describe the experience you’ll get. Best.
I came to this gym while I was in the area and it was great. The owner Joey was very welcoming and a great teacher. The place was very clean and welcoming. A great place to start training everyone was will to help me and show me how to do the moves properly. Definitely stop in and train you won’t regret it!!
I am writing this review to wholeheartedly recommend Tactics Jiu-Jitsu in Temple Terrace, under the expert guidance of Joey Best. With over 20 years of distinguished experience, Joey stands out as a beacon of knowledge, patience, and professionalism in the world of jiu-jitsu. I embarked on my jiu-jitsu journey at the age of 52, and over the past seven years, Joey has been an exemplary mentor. His demeanor and unparalleled ability to instruct students of any age and skill level are truly commendable. Joey Best possesses a profound depth of knowledge in jiu-jitsu, coupled with an extraordinary talent for teaching. His methods are engaging, ensuring that every lesson is both educational and enjoyable. The availability of classes at 6 AM is particularly beneficial, offering a refreshing and invigorating start to the day. For anyone looking to explore or advance their skills in jiu-jitsu, regardless of age, I cannot recommend Joey Best and Tactics Jiu-Jitsu enough. His dedication to the art and his students is evident in every class, making it an enriching experience for all.
Attended my first open mat at Tactics recently and was blown away. Joey and Amanda put so much work into this place - it’s colorful, air conditioned, and clean as hell (how does it smell so good after a class??). I’ve known them both for almost 10 years and trust me, you’re training with the best. As girl, I know how intimidating it can be stepping into a new club, but I’ve always recommended Joey’s classes to my girlfriends that are nervous about putting on a gi for the first time. Despite his belts, he’s maybe the most humble person I’ve ever met, a patient and precise teacher, friendly as hell, and an absolute nerd about jiu jitsu. Whether your ears are baby soft or hardened cauliflowers, you will learn a lot at this club.
Nice clean facility. Instructor was very helpful and showed me some new details to passing quarter guard that’s I’ve never seen before. Also unlike a lot of gyms in Florida they have AC. I recommend the place.
With a great culture and the best instructor you won’t find a better spot to train! The atmosphere is welcoming and supportive, making it a fantastic place for beginners and advanced practitioners alike. The instructor's expertise is unmatched, providing top-notch training and guidance. Whether you're looking to improve your skills or just enjoy a friendly community, this gym is the perfect place to train and grow in the world of jiu jitsu.
I've been training under Professor Joey since I moved to Tampa and from day one I've felt right at home. This is a great gym with exceptional technique and a very welcoming family-friendly atmosphere. I definitely recommend training here and I'm very happy that it has become part of my lineage.
What a great new BJJ school and head instructor Joey! You will feel welcomed the moment you walk in. Thank you professor Joey and congratulations!!
Great new location, the gym was very clean, training partners are very welcoming and Joey is an excellent instructor. I look forward to spending more time on the mat.
If you’re looking for a safe environment to learn and practice bjj, checkout the Tactics Jiu Jitsu in Temple Terrace/USF area. This is a family owned small business that embraces inclusiveness and diversity. The head instructor is Joey Best who is a certified bjj instructor with 23 years of experience. My wife and I have been training under Joey on and off for 9 years. We plan to enroll our daughter into the kid’s program when it starts.
Awesome, place!! If you’re located in Temple Terrace or the greater Tampa Bay area you need to give Tactics Jiujitsu a try. I’ve been lucky enough to have know Joey Best for 10+ years and he is not only a great coach, but an amazing person. Joey is a great coach for someone just getting started in jiujitsu, or a high level competitor. Come try a class today!
Clean, aesthetically pleasing new school in Temple Terrace. Decades of experience, detailed and articulated instruction. Family owned, friendly environment. Great place for novice or veteran grappler.
When looking for a place to start my jiu jitsu practice, I really was looking for a safe space for myself, as a woman, to train. This is it. It’s a family owned business - husband and wife team. Amanda is great to train with and learn from. Professor Joey does an excellent job teaching - very thoughtful and methodical. He also curates the class and try’s to mix and match the right people together. He is similar to my height and size and I find it beneficial to learn from as he focuses on the technical aspects of jiujitsu that make the techniques work effortlessly when done right.
Welcoming facility and incredibly CLEAN! I’m confident Mr. Best is one of of the most knowledgeable Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belts in Florida and everyone at the gym was more than kind to me. Although everyone was competitive and skilled, they made me feel safe during rolling which is a HUGE necessity for me when choosing a gym. Amanda greeted me with a smile as soon as I entered and directed me to Joseph for my liability waver and tour. The mats are well maintained and I personally watched them sweep, mop, and disinfect after training which is more than I can say about many other gyms I’ve visited. The bathrooms were sparkling, and the drinking fountain was filtered and ice cold. There’s a designated area for visitors so there’s no shoes on the mat, closed shelving for members gym bags, and 40 ft of windows for all of the natural light you could ever need. Whoever did the mural painting on the walls really knocked it out of the park and I love that they support local artists in their community. All in all, beautiful space that’s well taken care of. It’s a pleasure to train here and I definitely have found my new home gym. I’m ecstatic. This is exactly what Temple Terrace needed, no more commuting to Ybor City for Jiu Jitsu. As soon as they add kids classes I will be bringing my whole family!

From the moment I stepped through the doors of Tactis Jiu Jitsu, it felt like coming home. The sense of family and camaraderie envelops you, making every visit feel special. Tactis Jiu Jitsu will become your sanctuary, offering you an escape from life’s challenging moments. Joey is an excellent instructor! I have visited him every time I am in Florida. All his students have a awesome vibe and great Jiu-Jitsu
Joey and his wife Amanda have created an amazing place to learn Brazilian jiu jitsu! Joey is the best teacher I have learned under in almost 9 years of training. He takes time with his students to share his 20 plus years experience and knowledge and if you're interested in starting jujitsu I would highly recommend coming to Tactics Jiu-Jitsu!
Great new gym in temple terrace. Clean and in a good location. Joey Best is an awesome instructor who is very passionate about his craft and his students; my wife and I have both trained under his instruction for 7 years. He is very knowledgeable and has a way of breaking down techniques so anyone can understand. If you’re looking for a place to train, Tactics would be a great place to start or continue your journey.
Temple terrace just gained an amazing professor and friend. I’ve been lucky enough to train around the world but nothing compares to the instruction from Joey Best. Highly recommend trying jiujitsu at Tactics.
I have been training under Professor Joseph Best for over 11 years. I received my blue, purple and brown belt under him. His unique and brilliant approach on his instructions regardless of a student’s skill is on a level of its own. If you are lucky enough to train under him, take in all you can from this opportunity. Over the years I have seen him coach his students beyond metal barriers and blocks allowing them to achieve great success in Jiu Jitsu as well as in their personal health and well being. I am proud to continue to train under this family owned academy along side him and talented wife. I highly recommend this place!
This is a great academy if you are looking to just get started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or if you are a seasoned vet. Professor Joey Best is an incredibly talented instructor that has a great way of breaking down even the most complicated aspects of BJJ in a way any level student can understand. His positive demeanor and humor make every class an awesome and fun experience. I highly recommend Tactics!!
