What an amazing place. Honestly. We went from one kid in jujitsu to all 3 of our girls are now doing a mix of kids classes and my older 2 are starting adult and womens classes. We love it here. 10 out of 10 would recommend ! Amanda and Joey are phenomenal with both children's and adult classes!!!

Best place to learn Jiu Jitsu in Tampa. Joey prioritizes safety and technique in a welcoming environment. The schedule is set up in a way that allows those who work typical business hours to still make it to class in the mornings or evenings. Once my daughter is old enough, I plan on enrolling her in the kids classes as well.

Hands down the best place to learn Jiu-jitsu in Tampa and surrounding areas. For the last decade, I've been fortunate enough to learn from professor Joey. His knowledge and dedication to Jiu-jitsu is unrivaled. His instruction is clear, precise, and very thorough. You can be confident that you are learning all there is to know about the positions , how to maintain them , and how to transition to other areas and aspects of jiu-jitsu, from escapes to finishes and everything in between. Professor Joey is constantly learning and searching for new techniques and concepts to improve the game of both his students and himself. What that means is that he can teach the tried and true fundamentals of the game as well as the new techniques that are relevant in today's game. Furthermore, and most importantly, Tactics jiu-jitsu is a SAFE PLACE to learn martial arts. When I first set out to learn Jiu-jitsu, I tried another local school before I found my home under Professor Joey's tutelage. I had some basics , and because of this the head instructor was under the belief that I was training at another school and was there to "steal" techniques and training methods. I was put to roll or spar with a purple belt who immediately put me in a technique called a toe hold, which is illegal to do to white belts in the gi. He popped my ankle, and right after the head instructor gave me his spheal about how people come from different schools trying to steal techniques from him. He didn't take my money and told me to come back and i could sign up then.... I walked out of that school limping and although I wanted to go back and continue learning, I physically couldn't. Even with my lack of knowledge of the rules and regulations at the time, I couldn't help but feel like it was done on purpose. After I became a purple belt under Professor Joey, I was 100 percent sure. There is no way I could accidentally toe hold a white belt in the gi at the purple belt level... When I first started learning under Joey , I pretended not to know anything because I was traumatized by my previous experience at the other school and I genuinely wanted to learn. THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN TO ANY ONE AT TACTICS JIU-JITSU! Professor Joey has provided me with a SAFE PLACE to hone my skills. I am now a blackbelt under Professor Joey and I still continue to train here to this day despite me having my own academy (Torres Top Team BJJ) He is the teacher's teacher!!! With head instructors from surrounding areas coming here to train!! I have never needed to go anywhere else and i try to emulate the vibe that Tactics Jiu-jitsu provides. In my early days , in contrast to my first experience at another school where I was hurt on purpose, the higher ranking students guided me and taught me alongside Profesor Joey. He has also been there for me during competitions, traveling for hours to coach me to victory and even across state lines! Training here has been life changing for me and I could go on and on and it would still do no justice. You will find your home here just as I have 😊. Thank you for everything over these past decade !

I had the privilege of training with Professor Joey Best while I was in the area preparing for the Pan Americans. I was immediately impressed by the attention to detail in every technique taught and he was very attentive to every student, whether new or seasoned. I have been to a few gyms over the years I have trained, and the overall team environment and sense of community that he has fostered is something that is rare to find and is a testament to his ability as an instructor. If you are looking for high quality instruction in an environment that is safe and welcoming I highly recommend Tactics Jiu Jitsu.

I’ve been learning Jiu Jitsu from Joey since 2015 and ive been at Tactics since the first day it opened. I’m a business owner who is extremely picky about who and what I pour into because like most people I consider my time valuable. I’m no world champion but I do leave every class feeling like it because of the people around me. Great variety of colored belts including black belts on the mats every day to train with if you’re more advanced and looking for friendly competition or just starting out and need someone experienced to help you. Can’t say enough good things about this group of people. Temple Terrace is lucky to have Joey and Amanda opening its doors there. Try out a class, you won’t regret it.

Professor Joey Best is an outstanding jiu jitsu practitioner and instructor. He's extremely patient and thourogh in his teaching and makes it a point to lead with respect. Although I'm out of state, he has played a foundational role in my jiu jitsu journey and I always look forward to making the trip to train under him. The amount of high level women that train here also speaks volumes to his character and the environment he has created. His wife Amanda also contributes greatly to this incredible atmosphere. Tactics is clean and the energy is refreshing and uplifting. I would highly recommend Tactics Jiu Jitsu to everyone at any age and skill level.

Attended my first open mat at Tactics recently and was blown away. Joey and Amanda put so much work into this place - it’s colorful, air conditioned, and clean as hell (how does it smell so good after a class??). I’ve known them both for almost 10 years and trust me, you’re training with the best. As girl, I know how intimidating it can be stepping into a new club, but I’ve always recommended Joey’s classes to my girlfriends that are nervous about putting on a gi for the first time. Despite his belts, he’s maybe the most humble person I’ve ever met, a patient and precise teacher, friendly as hell, and an absolute nerd about jiu jitsu. Whether your ears are baby soft or hardened cauliflowers, you will learn a lot at this club.

When looking for a place to start my jiu jitsu practice, I really was looking for a safe space for myself, as a woman, to train. This is it. It’s a family owned business - husband and wife team. Amanda is great to train with and learn from. Professor Joey does an excellent job teaching - very thoughtful and methodical. He also curates the class and try’s to mix and match the right people together. He is similar to my height and size and I find it beneficial to learn from as he focuses on the technical aspects of jiujitsu that make the techniques work effortlessly when done right.

Welcoming facility and incredibly CLEAN! I’m confident Mr. Best is one of of the most knowledgeable Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belts in Florida and everyone at the gym was more than kind to me. Although everyone was competitive and skilled, they made me feel safe during rolling which is a HUGE necessity for me when choosing a gym. Amanda greeted me with a smile as soon as I entered and directed me to Joseph for my liability waver and tour. The mats are well maintained and I personally watched them sweep, mop, and disinfect after training which is more than I can say about many other gyms I’ve visited. The bathrooms were sparkling, and the drinking fountain was filtered and ice cold. There’s a designated area for visitors so there’s no shoes on the mat, closed shelving for members gym bags, and 40 ft of windows for all of the natural light you could ever need. Whoever did the mural painting on the walls really knocked it out of the park and I love that they support local artists in their community. All in all, beautiful space that’s well taken care of. It’s a pleasure to train here and I definitely have found my new home gym. I’m ecstatic. This is exactly what Temple Terrace needed, no more commuting to Ybor City for Jiu Jitsu. As soon as they add kids classes I will be bringing my whole family!

I have been training under Professor Joseph Best for over 11 years. I received my blue, purple and brown belt under him. His unique and brilliant approach on his instructions regardless of a student’s skill is on a level of its own. If you are lucky enough to train under him, take in all you can from this opportunity. Over the years I have seen him coach his students beyond metal barriers and blocks allowing them to achieve great success in Jiu Jitsu as well as in their personal health and well being.
