Jon is an incredible coach and runs a top-notch Jiu-Jitsu academy. His teaching goes way beyond just showing moves and he builds discipline, strength, and focus in every student. The techniques are taught with precision, always with an eye toward what works in real competition. You can tell he’s put decades into mastering the art and knows how to pass that knowledge on in a way that clicks. Every class is structured, challenging, and leaves you better than when you walked in. Jon pushes you to dig deeper, but he also knows how to keep the energy positive and motivating. The atmosphere on the mats reflects his leadership and serious about training, but respectful, supportive, and welcoming to anyone willing to put in the work. If you’re serious about learning Jiu-Jitsu, competing, and developing the discipline and mindset that comes with it, this is the place. Jon’s instruction sets the standard, and it’s no surprise this academy has built such a strong reputation. Easily one of the best training environments you’ll find.

I attended a class here on vacation. Really welcoming atmosphere. Met a bunch of great people. The coach is very knowledgeable & breaks down techniques into easy to understand details. Learned a lot, had some fun rolls. Hope to get back there one day. OSS

Seymour Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy is the place to be if you want to expand on your self-defense, grappling work, and jiu-jitsu. I recently began my journey here to further develop my combat skills to help me during tense situations as a Police Officer. I have seen huge differences mentally and physically within myself during tense moments at work all due to Seymour BJJ. Seymour BJJ presents a kind and welcoming atmosphere to EVERYONE who walks through the door! If you’re debating on where to start BJJ like I was, you will not regret coming here at all!
Both our boys have been going to Seymour Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for over 5 years. Our 10 year old has thrived so much and now helps out with teaching the younger ones under the guidance of coach John and the other coaches. This is a good sport/activity to get kids to grow themselves and their abilities, it’s also a place to make good friends and build good character. We plan on staying as long as they’re interested.
I cannot say enough about how wonderful these people are and their establishment. I drove an hour 3 times a week for my sons. I just was not able to anymore or we would still be there. The self esteem and discipline that is instilled on top of the fun. Professor John and his team of leaders were so special, caring, and dilligent. Dodgeball on Fridays!

My children have been attending Seymour Brazilian Jiu jitsu, for a total of 4 years out of the last 5. They have learned discipline, timing, and how to think several moves ahead. I was shopping around for jiu jitsu classes for my son. I have been in many many place in Seymour and Knoxville area and did not find anything like Seymour Brazilian jiu jitsu. The building is spotless! The staff is super nice, professional and well informed! My son loves attending classes here. They deserve more than 5 stars!!!

I could not recommend a place more!! The school is a safe place that welcomes people all of athletic ability, age, etc. The team at Seymour couldn’t be more amazing! Jon and Carolina promote an environment that allows every person to grow as they support you step by step through your own progression. I also highly recommend to any women interested in self defense as it is highly empowering!

There are few things in life that challenge and bring out the best in you, and my time with Seymour Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy was absolutely one of those. Having no experience, I came in to a new world of competition and learning never felt before. Jon, the owner/teacher/sensei is welcoming, energetic, and thoughtful with his teaching. The group he has assembled is not only kind and inviting, but has learned from Jon how to work at different levels of experience. Despite starting my training at 41, I never feel out of place and am constantly encouraged by the positive environment. No matter your level of training, experience, athletic abilities, this is absolutely the place to start or continue your journey in martial arts. The lessons I have learned work not only on the mat but have carried over into my daily life with confidence and knowledge we can all do hard things.

This is a great place to start or continue training BJJ. I attended classes at Seymour Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy after enrolling my 5 year old son in 2021. In 2023 we moved a couple hours away. Leaving SBJJA was the hardest part of the entire moving process for our family. Jon is savage in the best way, he will always be my friend and one of the most influential coaches I’ve ever had to include other sports and military service. I would highly recommend training at SBJJA

Is a great place to train. No matter what your skill level, Coach John will help you understand what you’re doing. The Atmosphere of the gym is very welcoming and the people are very friendly. If you’re a beginner and nervous to start your journey, I think this is where you should go. And if you’ve been training for a while this place will push you to be better.

I've been training at the gym for 6 months now. The gym is very nice and well kept. Jon is an awesome coach and incredibly knowledgeable. Everyone at the gym makes you feel like you belong from day one. In just six months I have learned way more than I expected. Can not recommend Seymour Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy enough. Great for mental and physical health.
Our kids would live at this gym if they could! The atmosphere and everyone in it have been very positive influences on our kid's mind, body, and soul. They have learned so much and their technique and confidence have been significantly improved in the 2 years they have been here. Not only this, they have gained a family in which have impacted their lives in amazing ways even when they leave. We will forever be grateful for this place.

Seymour BJJ is a truly special part of our community. This place is run with a positive and purposeful mission. The folks who frequent the mats of this quaint dojo understand the community that Coach Jon and his family have helped create in the area. Jiu-Jitsu is a fun, engaging, and personally gratifying way to get in shape- building ones body while improving confidence and mental clarity. Here you are sure to learn from seasoned grapplers and are certain test your personal limits in a most constructive way. My family has 2 members participating and I'm sure in time we'll add more.

The coaching here is the perfect mix of encouragement, patience and effectiveness. What started as a very intimidating sport for our kiddos has turned into favorite classes of their week and they’re learning invaluable life skills. Very welcoming school, so thankful they are nearby!

They offer a fantastic homeschool class that my son just loves. The lessons he's learning (not just jiu jitsu) are invaluable. He's learning discipline, respect, perseverance, and being a good team player.
I travel a lot and have to walk into a lot of new gyms. You literally see it all---good and bad. Well, this was a great experience. The owner and all of his guys couldn't have been more welcoming. It was a last minute vacation planned and I didn't contact these guys until the last minute and it was zero problem. We rolled together both days and everyone was super respectful. I can't recommend this place enough.

I am on vacation from Florida and was welcomed to seymour bjj with welcome arms. 2nd I would like to thank them for the very cool loop choke variation I learned, I am looking forward to trying to develop it further. Seymour Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy is fantastic! My son and I both train there: he is six, and I am forty six years-old . . . and we both love it. Coach Jon and Coach Carolina have cultivated such a welcoming and family-friendly environment. At any given class, you're bound to walk into a the parents, spouses, family members, friends, etc of those training on the mats all sitting around playing together or talking and hanging out. And out on the mats, you'll find a wide variety of folks training, guys, gals, moms, dads, brothers, sisters, and ages 4 and on up to 60+ years-old. Everyone who trains here is in it for their own personal gain, while simultaneously being for the personal gain of everyone else on the mats. It's pretty amazing, and something, quite frankly, I didn't expect when I walked into my first class. I led a pretty sedentary life prior to beginning my training 16 months ago. And in that time, I have seen my weight drop, my confidence climb, my strength and stamina increase, my understanding of what my body can do expand, and I've made some friends in the process. If you are reading this, and you have any inclination that you'd like to train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Seymour Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy is the perfect place to train. You get a free week trial. If you’re looking for self improvement and new friends this is the place for it! The people are great and the coaches are awesome! I came here just expecting it to be another gym but it’s more than that.
I watched my son train here for a year and a half before I started and my only regret is not starting sooner! I've lost 30 lbs over the past year, gained a physical, mental, and spiritual strength I didn't know could be obtained, and have gained a family that has my back both on and off the mats! I stopped by this gym for a training session while visiting from out of town. The instructors were very solid and attentive. I enjoyed the vibe of this place quite a bit, too. Everyone was laid back and inviting, but at the same time, the rolls were serious and focused. I appreciate that everyone there came with a focus to learn and support one another. If I’m passing through town again I’ll definitely stop in for more training.
