BJJ In Rossendale With A Rickson Gracie Certified 3rd Degree Black Belt
We are really lucky to have SBG and coach Glyn in Rossendale. The gym is set in the old Masonic hall, in easily the most picturesque room I’ve ever had the pleasure to train in. Glyn is a third degree BJJ black belt and a very talented and approachable teacher, with a great skill for demonstrating fundamental concepts in a simple and concise manner, which is easy to understand and implement. The atmosphere in the gym is great, everyone is friendly and willing to share their knowledge, there is no sense of ego and it is clear that training in a manner that minimises the risk of injury is a priority. I’ve heard Glyn mention on a podcast that he charges more than other local martial art clubs but even though the gym is more expensive than others in the area, the smaller class sizes make a noticeable difference. They allow for more individual attention and detailed feedback compared to other gyms I’ve tried in the past, which has really helped me to learn and improve at a faster pace. The concepts/techniques of each session are recorded then posted online and this means that even if I am unable to make the class I am still able to familiarise myself with the teachings. Glyn also sometimes stays behind after sessions and will answer students questions, help with addressing weaknesses/gaps in knowledge and just generally offer his expertise, which has been invaluable. In terms of progress per pound spent I can’t imagine there is better value in the valley, and would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone thinking of trying it out.
I’ve been training here for around 6 months now, the atmosphere fostered by both the members and coaches is second to none. It is a fantastic space to learn, grow and develop. In just a short time I feel I have made significantly meaningful progression, the likes of which you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else.
You’ll be hard pressed to find a safer environment or more technically sound instruction than what Glyn offers here.
I first heard Glyn on his incredibly insightful episode he had on bjj fanatics podcast, he talked so clearly about how learning to breathe properly can help you control nerves and stress on and off the mats. Coming up to the weekend of my competition, which was my first at blue belt, I was becoming increasingly nervous and was overthinking everything, I reached out to Glyn and he relayed his wisdom about the new world of learning to breathe properly to me. I had a week of practicing breathing and trying to lower my heart rate, the day of competition the nerves hadn’t gone but they were not having the same effect on me as they normally would do previously in competition. After 4 fights and a few hours later I took the gold winning every match within a minute of being on the mat, which breathing helped me do.
Recently joined SBG Bury/Haslingden after trying a few gyms over the years as a beginner. The coaching here is on another level — really detailed and delivered in a very unique way with everything explained in depth, where you actually understand why you’re doing things instead of just being shown a move once and left to it. Everyone’s been genuinely friendly and helpful from day one, and the vibe is supportive without any ego or bravado. Highly recommended!
I recently had the good fortune to receive instruction from Glyn during the SBG Fall Camp in Bozeman Montana. Glyn was one of the featured instructors amongst a group of very accomplished black belts. Glyn's ability to break down information and provide it in a simple format that could be easily understood by all levels was impressive. He was very gracious with his time and knowledge. I was lucky enough to partner with Glyn during one of the other blocks of instruction and he took the time to walk me through what I could do to improve my technique. It is moments in my BJJ jounery that will always stick with me. Thanks Glyn and I hope to see you again down the road.
Glyn is one of the best bjj and judo instructors that I have ever met. His brilliant insight and fundamentals based teaching takes your jiu jitsu to the next level in a short period of time. In addition, being part of a great SBG community is such a blessing in that you will have access to all the great minds in the BJJ and mixed martial art world. SBG has a very unique culture where everyone is welcome to the community and encouraged to learn Jiu Jitsu in the most effective and efficient way. I cannot recommend SBG Bury Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts enough to anyone who is interested in learning BJJ and starting a Jiu Jitsu journey.
Posted 1 year agoMet Glyn when he came to our gym in the west of Ireland for a seminar earlier this year and I couldn't be happier with my experience. Glyn is incredibly knowledgeable and took the time to make sure everyone understood the material and answer any questions I had. His ability to breakdown movements and techniques in a simplified way is world class. Really look forward to another opportunity of training with him. Overall, I highly recommend this jiu-jitsu school to anyone looking to learn self-defense/ jiu jitsu. You’ll be in great hands with Glyn.
Posted 1 year agoGlyn Powditch has an outstanding ability to break down BJJ techniques in a way that makes them easy to understand and apply. Each move is explained step-by-step, with an emphasis on the finer details that really make a difference. Whether it’s a basic position or a more complex submission, Glyn ensures that every student grasps both the ‘how’ and the ‘why’ behind it. His teaching style is patient, encouraging, and very detail-oriented, which helps students build a solid foundation while also refining their skills. I’ve never felt more confident in my understanding of BJJ, thanks to Glyn’s clear and structured approach.
Posted 1 year agoBeen training here for nearly 2 years now and I can honestly say I haven’t had a better experience of training jiu jitsu. Glyn and the coaches really are top tier in their understanding of the game and are so helpful in transferring their knowledge to all levels of individuals. My life’s changed so much for the better since deciding to train here and I could not recommend SBG Bury enough. Brilliant gym.
Posted 2 years agoGreat gym full of great people. The coaches here are extremely friendly and knowledgeable making it the perfect place regardless of age, fitness or ability. Head coach Glyn has been training for 15+ years and is a 3rd degree black belt and places lots of emphasis on staying calm whilst focusing on your breathing. This means you focus on improving your technique rather than relying on athleticism. Been training here for a year now and glad I picked it over other gyms.
