Showed up out of the blue at 6am to see if I could drop in while I was visiting. They were welcoming, facilitating was clean and great mats. Was able to get some instruction from Josh and the room was a perfect vibe.

I have been at this gym for one week now, everyone is extremely helpful to beginners. I have no jiu jitsu experience but everyone that I've had the opportunity to roll with took the time to slow down and walk me through different positions. All instructors are very friendly and create a welcoming environment for everyone of all skill levels.

As a parent I Love this place so much! The teachers are really good! Recommend this place 1,000 percent! I have a five year old and a seven year old who attend. At the beginning it was hard for them to adjust to (it was new for both of them) and now jujitsu is all they look forward to! They love Roots So much!

Great gym for a first time practitioner, they have kids classes, white belt classes, female only classes, and no gi classes. They let white belts roll as well and I’m so glad I didn’t unknowingly sign up for a gym that wouldn’t let me roll until I was a blue belt (I guess some gyms don’t allow white belts to roll) It’s really a family vibe and everyone is always willing to help no matter your belt color. It’s awesome to have the support I have from all the teammates and coaches. I’ve rolled with almost every one at the gym from white belts to black belts and every single person helped me and gave me feedback after we rolled.

Roots is an absolutely wonderful place to train jiu jitsu. Gerson is widely known in the valley for his kindheartedness and, especially, his brilliant technique. This is reflected in his students. If you come to roots, prepare to make great friends and have some tough rounds. The vibe and the training cannot be beaten. I am extremely proud to have been part of the Roots family for 2 years, while I lived in Mesa. P.S. - There isn't a better Saturday open mat in the valley!

Gerson and the other instructors are very polite and helpful. The Members of the school are a great bunch and everyone is very considerate. If you want a BJJ school where you can train hard and be around good people, this is a good choice.

We absolutely love this business. My son enjoys jiu jitsu and Gerson is so friendly, knowledgeable and keeps the kiddos engaged. It's so close to my kids school, we couldn't be happier!

I love this gym. Being a small female and having trained at other gyms I was honestly nervous coming in and seeing some of the bigger guys that train here. After training here I know it’s a safe training environment and everyone is welcoming. Roots is my new home. ❤️

Roots BJJ is an awesome school! The vibe here is laid-back and welcoming, with solid instructors both morning and night. Gerson is a decorated, respected competitor who's been training and competing around the Valley for many years. In fact, a large segment of the students here have trained together for at least 10 years or more. There is a ton of knowledge here. This school truly has a family environment, a great kids program, 6 a.m. classes 5 days a week, and one of the most popular open mats in the Valley! Highly recommend Roots Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Gilbert!!

I highly recommend this school to anyone with an interest in starting or just passing through. What an absolute pleasure to train here. It has a multitude of skill levels, with a tremendous atmosphere. The way I was welcomed reminded me of when I train at a sister gym back home! Thank you for having me and I will always drop in if I'm in Gilbert! Special thanks to head instructor Gerson, amazing rolls my brother. You have a tremendous program and great students.🤙🤙🤙🤙

It began with getting my daughter enrolled in class to keep her active & learn some self defense techniques, not knowing if she'd like it or do well at it. 3 weeks later I joined & a year and a half later we both are still at it. Great coaches, friendly & inviting environment, awesome teammates who all are willing to help you learn & grow. Jiu-jitsu has improved my life beyond the physical aspect 🤙

Sharing this after being a member for 4 years, I’ve never felt a more at home and welcoming situation in the Jiujitsu community. I could always count on the people and practitioners to push me on and off the mats. I no longer train at roots because of a work move but I often find myself missing the environment that Professor Gerson and his black belts have built for the gym. Gerson’s humbling spirit and willingness to help others improve their game from all surrounding schools Makes Roots a hotspot for great drop in competitors. If competition isn’t in your future Roots is very hobbyist friendly mixed in with its competitive practitioners.

I stopped in during a couple day trip to visit family in Arizona and couldn’t have asked for a more friendly reception. The head coach Gerson was more than willing to let me train for a few days, even letting me drop in on the Thursday competition class. Can’t wait to train here again when I return. Unrivaled hospitality, good people all around.

I’m legally blind I don’t drive and it sometimes hard for to to get around or participate in certain activities. My experience at Roots was very positive. The instructors made sure to get me involved and also made sure I knew what I was doing and aware of my surroundings. The other students were very nice and made me feel welcome the moment I arrived. If your looking for a place to learn bjj and gain some friends at the same time this is the place for you.

This place is the best. I moved here from Nashville and was referred to Roots by my coach. It is a great atmosphere and tremendous coaches. Gerson is not just master of the art, but a wonderful person to learn from and be around. I am honored to call him my friend and coach.

I moved here from out of state a couple months ago and was itching to start training in BJJ again. Roots is welcoming, friendly, and the main instructor, Gerson, is good at communicating and demonstrating the concepts he's teaching and the adjustments needed to make progress. The gym is spacious and the team is a great group of guys and gals.

This gym is very clean, has super nice people, and the instructor is very professional. This gym also has a gym session in the morning which is advantage with other gyms that dont have morning session. The place is always clean and the people there are always nice and willing to help you out. I would definitely recommend this to everyone.

I've been to a couple BJJ gyms in the past prior to committing to Roots in late 2018. The first thing that I noticed immediately was Gerson's attitude, patience and quality of instructions. He brings the friendly and welcoming islander vibe that makes you feel at home and part of a family. His leadership can be seen and felt instilled into ALL of his students. Everyone is extremely welcoming and friendly. If you are looking for a great place to train as a competitor or a hobbyist, this is THE spot. Gerson understands that people train Jiu Jitsu for various reasons and it's not always about winning against other people, but winning against yourself. People here are very humble, skilled and can turn up the heat if needed. I'm glad I found Gerson and the Roots family!

I moved out here from NM and trained under a different academy. The first time I visited the school I was warmly greeted by the students and Professor Gerson. I learned a lot during my trial classes and had some really good rolls too. I’m now fully signed up and love it! I recommend Roots to anyone wanting to try out Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu!

Gerson is a dynamic instructor for beginners like me as well as training competitors. He works hard, creates a fun atmosphere, and cares about his students. I visited several jiujitsu classes at other gyms before deciding on Roots. Community, one-on-one time grappling, technique - after the first class I could tell the difference btw this gym and the others.

I signed up for the free 1 week trial, & was hooked. I have been attending Roots for almost 2 months now, and I absolutely love it! I had no previous experience in martial arts (& was a bit nervous going into it), but Roots does a phenomenal job of making you feel welcomed. The 6am classes are my favorite, great way to start the day!!

This place is a fun easy going people, fit for both the competitor and fitness enthusiasts To train at. There is always serveral black belts present along with plenty of lowers senior belts to roll with... Additionally, Gerson is still and active competitor and competes... that is always EXTRA motivation to see the Instructor train hard and has 1st hand knowledge of what someone is experiencing during competition training.

We've been trying to sign up to this place for over a month, by phone, email and even showed up at their location. The place is hard to find and closed with no activity, based on the neigbors. They've never responded to email or voicemail. If the business is closed, they should at least update their website and leave a message when you call.
