I’ve heard so much about Jiu-Jitsu from various podcasts as one of the most effective martial arts. It piqued my curiosity, but I was specifically looking for something that focused on self-defense. That’s when I discovered Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, and it led me to Ronin Athletics in Manhattan. What surprised me was learning that Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is a form of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu but prioritizes self-defense rather than the more sport-oriented styles that are widely popular. It’s truly a system of self-defense—covering not just grappling but also standing striking defense, which I never realized was part of the practice. Ronin Athletics is the only school I’ve found in New York City offering authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu training directly associated with Rener and Ryron Gracie, sons of UFC founder Rorion Gracie. Their connection to the Gracie brothers ensures the instruction here remains true to the original self-defense philosophy of Jiu-Jitsu. What sets this gym apart is its organized and structured curriculum. Every class is thoughtfully designed, making it easy for beginners to follow while also offering depth for those who want to advance. The collaborative and supportive environment makes it feel incredibly safe to train, especially since they emphasize learning over competition. If you’re looking for a self-defense system that’s practical, effective, well organized, Ronin Athletics is the place to go. Highly recommend it for anyone in NYC seeking authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu!

Ronin Athletics is a truly great Gracie certified BJJ gym here in New York City. This gym is great for both, beginners who are looking to get started and have never done martial arts, as well as for those who are more advanced and have experience. The curriculum is also a great mix of sport jiu jitsu and jiu jitsu focused on self defense, whichever you want to focus on is something the coaches can provide for you. With that being said, every coach at Ronin Athletics is phenomenal. They are friendly, great teachers, and of course, extremely good at BJJ. Joining Ronin Athletics was easily one of the best decisions I have made.

Cannot recommend this gym enough. Exceptional coaches, respectful training partners, and a welcoming environment. If you’re new to jiujitsu, you’ll start by learning basic self-defense techniques. From there, you’ll progress into more advanced techniques and start rolling live rounds. Lessons are taught as part of a structured curriculum, which really helps students see the big picture of the sport. If you’re looking to train Gracie jiujitsu in New York City, I highly recommend stopping by. I’ve made some amazing friends at this gym and feel very lucky to have started the journey here. I only stopped training at Ronin Athletics when I left New York for my job. Ronin crew, I miss you guys and can’t wait to train again the next time I visit!

My first ever jiujitsu class was at Ronin Athletics back in 2023, which was an inspiration for me to start my own journey. Now I am training at Gracie Victor in Upstate New York. When I attended the trial class at Ronin Athletics, little did I know that one hour class would turn into a lifetime activity (at least that is the plan). I will always be grateful to this place because of that inspiration. Now that I have come back to visit the place over the weekend I can say more tangible things besides the inspiration. First of all, the place is spotless clean; when you enter the place you feel good and comfortable. Secondly, the practitioners are friendly, respectful, and regardless of their rank always open to learning and teaching. Another big thing for me was to realize how well the teaching was. Simple, effective and methodical. The head coach, Christian, is an expert. He teaches confusion-free, and makes sure that you get enough repetition so that the techniques become muscle memory. It’s a great place to be at.

Ronin Athletics is great for learning the foundations of BJJ and beyond. Learning the principles of Brazilian jiu jitsu through the Gracie Combatives program was perfect for a beginner like me. Everybody here is friendly and helpful towards each other. If you are looking for lessons in self-defense and BJJ, I wholeheartedly recommend Ronin Athletics.

I've been training at Ronin Athletics for almost 2 years, and would highly recommend it for anyone in the area. Gracie Combatives, its beginners curriculum, focuses on practical self-defense and fundamentals; As well as creating a safe and welcoming environment for beginners. The highly organized class structure, both for beginner and advanced classes, adds continuity that I've found extremely helpful for learning and retaining knowledge of techniques. Thank you Christian and all the staff for sharing your time and knowledge with me!

I have been training at Ronin Athletics for about a year now, and it has been a great experience. Having trained at a few other gyms, in my opinion Ronin Athletics is the best of both worlds when it comes to sports jiu jitsu and self defense jiu jitsu, particularly for somebody just starting their jiu jitsu journey. The beginner's program(Gracie combatives), is well structured, focuses on the most important positions, situations, scenarios for a self defense encounter(which are also mostly the basics for jiu jitsu in general, and a good base to build upon), with every class focusing on both standing and ground techniques. Having started my jiu jitsu journey at a gym where sparring was a strong focus from day one, I was skeptical of the philosophy of not rolling or sparring throughout combatives, until I realized that the majority of the moves I was able to pull off in live sparring at another gym i trained at for a bit simultaneously(where rolling/sparring was allowed) were from the combatives curriculum. More importantly I have not been injured once at Ronin, and I don't think I have witnessed any significant injury in either combatives or master cycle. Once you graduate combatives you can participate in Master Cycle, which like combatives has a structured curriculum online. But what is really special is that coach Christian(and the other coaches) also adds in his personal favorite techniques from his years of competing in and studying the art. One of the things I found helpful that is different from most gyms Ive trained at is that the curriculum is structured in a way where you stay on the same position for months at a time, which ensures a lot of repetition in the same techniques and positions which helps cements it into memory. The best thing about training at Ronin is the culture and people. An emphasis is placed on everyone learning and improving(while also keeping training realistic), so it is common to see upper belts help lower belts, gradually increasing resistance throughout a session to ensure a concept or technique sticks. I cannot recommend this gym enough!

I’m the only parent to two young boys. My boys have been part of the Gracie Bullyproof Jiu Jitsu program for almost three years! I live in Queens and even though there are other jui jitsu programs in my neighborhood. I am willing to commute from Queens to be part of this unique anti-bullying program. I like the structure that the program has to encourage children to do their best to prevent bullying through the 3 Ts: Talk, Tell, Tackle. My sons LOVE the dodgeball aspect which provides a way for the kids to learn how to run from bullies, release energy, have fun and work collaboratively to unfreeze/untag each other. My boys have gained invaluable skills and techniques to prevent bullying and, if necessary, protect themselves physically. The instructors are incredibly supportive and patient with the students. They help them build character, focus and respect each other. It's one of the best self defense programs for children. I only wish it offered a bullyproof summer camp and was part of their after school program so that other minority children can learn the techniques too. If you are looking for the best Kids Jiu Jitsu in New York City, Gracie Bullyproof is the place to be! Highly recommend!

Joined tonight's Combative's class on a "day guest" basis while in NYC for meetings. The facility on 39th & Mad is clean, well organized and with a nice fully open floor (not easy to find in NYC buildings). Coach Montes expertly trained us on arm bars and guillotine defense. Vibe of the students is a great mix of friendly and training focused. Although I was joining as a guest, two other students (Mike and Clay) proactively introduced themselves and invited me to train with them. Highly recommended!

Wow! I am still new to the program, but I had to take a moment to post a review of Ronin Athletics and the team there. I was looking for a self defense class for women in NYC and found the Women Empowered program. This far exceeded any of my expectations! I was honestly a little intimidated and nervous about the grappling involved with Jiu Jitsu — but Jasper immediately put me at ease and assured me it is all women and no experience is required. The space is fantastic, and the team — Christian and Lora — was welcoming and knowledgeable, they made it accessible and understandable for the absolute beginner (me!). And, the women only group was welcoming and all different levels and ages — I was reassured that everyone there had started where I was one my first day and felt safe and at ease. The demonstrations by Christian and Lora were methodical, repeated for clarity and then we got to practice. I was paired with a woman who had more experience and the instructors came around and to make sure we got the sequences down. It was actually a lot of fun and didn’t take long to get into a groove. Each class covers a specific skill and you can jump in at any point in the curriculum. The instructors are clearly experts, but make it accessible — I have knee issues, so we worked on ways to adapt movements. The curriculum is thoughtful and well organized — it makes the destination clear — they give you the map and step by step instructions that build confidence and increase stamina. This is not your typical fitness class. There is no fitness requirement, it’s good for any age (I am 50, but the class included women younger and older!) and it as much MENTAL as it is physical. It is about maintaining mental clarity in any situation where you feel threatened and muscle memory in the event of an actual physical attack. After a single class, I felt more confident and informed — and know that if I put the work in, I will have tools that will allow me to feel (and be) safer, AND stay calm if I ever find myself in a tough spot. I can’t even begin to tell you how it has made me more aware (in a good way!) and made me more self assured in every day social situations, not just walking from my car at night. There is even an online component to the lessons so you can review the lessons. And the live sessions are super easy to get to — a short walk from Grand Central — so no excuses about travel.

Training at Ronin solidified my fundamentals and better prepared me for BJJ. Every instructor, including the owner Christian, made Ronin a welcoming environment to learn and prepare for street readiness. As a female, I found each class beneficial in building techniques and confidence. The coaches make sure every move is throughly explained with examples of when you may need to use the move and then they provide ample time to drill that technique over and over again! Lastly, the gym is always clean and the location in midtown is fun!

I’ve explored a few different Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools in New York City and chose to train at Ronin Athletics because of the strong foundations I knew I would get with the Gracie Combatives curriculum. I can't recommend this place enough. If you're looking for a welcoming, supportive environment to learn the ropes and / or further your jiu-jitsu, Ronin is without a doubt the go-to spot in NYC. Top-notch instructors and great vibes! I started my jiu-jitsu journey here 16 months ago, and although I'm moving out of state, this gym will always have a special place in my heart. As the only Certified Gracie Jiu-jitsu Training Center in the city, its beginners curriculum (aka "Gracie Combatives") is differentiated from what you'd experience at other gyms. It focuses on the practical application of jiu-jitsu in real-life self-defense scenarios, which allows you to truly understand and appreciate the martial art's functionality. Aside from internalizing the core concepts of self defense, the beginners curriculum provides a nice on-ramp to the intermediate / advanced training. Ronin has an inclusive culture that fosters camaraderie and personal growth. Whether you're trying out jiu-jitsu for the first time or you've been training for years, I 10/10 recommend Ronin Athletics!!!

I have been training at Ronin Athletics for the past year and a half and from my first day I have had a very positive experience. I started in the Gracie Combatives program, and I am now in the Master Cycle. Overall, the environment at the gym is very warm and welcoming. In both the Combatives program and Master Cycle, the classes follow a very organized and logical structure. Each of the instructors is very knowledgeable, and they all do a great job of demonstrating and explaining each technique in depth, as well as answering any questions. Also, they are very encouraging. I appreciate the emphasis on self-defense, and I enjoy that we take time to drill into the small details of each technique to fully understand them. I also appreciate that we are encouraged to continually sharpen our Combatives techniques. There is also a high emphasis placed on drilling and sparring in a safe and controlled manner. Training at Ronin Athletics is my first time ever training a martial art, and I could not have asked for a better experience! My self-defense abilities have improved significantly, and I have had a lot of fun along the way!

We have had the great fortune of working with Christian and his team in New York City at Ronin Athletics. He has been a spectacular coach to myself and my young son who is training in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. The thoughtful approach to self-defense and anti-bullyproof training that the team takes for young children is truly exceptional! It not only trains children how to appropriately defend themselves in difficult situations, but the appropriate steps to take before engaging in any form of violence. This combined with the discipline and respect that is expected from the students provides a very strong foundation for them. The facilities are exceptionally clean, the teachers gracious, thoughtful and very professional, and it is a lot of fun! I very highly recommend individuals of all ages, old and young, to train at Ronin Athletics, you will not regret it!

I've been consistently training jiu-jitsu at Ronin Athletics for over a year, and it has been an incredible experience. One of the standout aspects of Ronin Athletics is its highly organized class structure. Instead of learning random techniques in each session, we focus on a single fundamental position and explore it in depth over an extended period. For example, we spent almost three months working on leg locks, during which we learned dozens of entrances and submissions, ranging from straight foot locks to heel hooks. This approach of providing context and continuity makes learning individual techniques more effective and helps connect them better. The head coach, Christian, is a fantastic person and a true expert of the subject. He is always friendly and eager to answer questions. His detail-oriented yet clear teaching style is highly valuable. He not only demonstrates how to perform a technique but also explains the underlying principles behind it. Additionally, there's a strong emphasis on positional sparring, where we regularly start from disadvantageous positions and focus on escaping them. Beyond the technical aspects, I truly enjoy the overall gym atmosphere and its diverse and friendly community. I've made many great friends from various backgrounds, which I don't think would have been possible elsewhere. If you're interested in learning jiu-jitsu, I highly recommend Ronin Athletics.

Ronin Athletics is an amazing gym - I’m part of their Women Empowered self defense course and it’s a joy to go to classes each week. Self defense can be a heavy topic to teach, but Lora and Christian are skilled at treating the subject matter with the gravity it deserves while also creating a fun, comfortable and friendly atmosphere. As someone who has never practiced jiu jitsu or any martial arts before, the moves are broken down in a way that makes learning accessible and fun and the safe and welcoming atmosphere creates a really amazing gym community.

As someone looking to train in art of BJJ focus on self defense, I couldn’t imagine starting my journey anywhere else. The classes are structured in a way where the lessons gradually build upon each other by focusing on a few fundamental techniques at a time. Through gradual exposure, even the hardest classes are easily digestible especially when paired with the supplemental online lessons. You can learn at your own pace, and really gain a reliable foundation that will cover many of the common scenarios you may face in a street fight. After gaining comfort through repeated exposure to the basics, you then learn how to chain the techniques together and improve your overall fluidity. I started my jiu-jitsu journey at Ronin athletics and I couldn't be happier. As a beginner, it is important to find a place where you want to return and you don't get smashed or injured. Coach Montes created a friendly and safe environment for everyone. When you join, you start with a Gracie combatives course which gives you most common techniques like take downs, chokes, etc. Those techniques give you a good foundation and are easily applicable for street self defense. Once you graduate from the course and get a certificate, you can start rolling with higher belts and learn more advanced techniques. Techniques are split into 3-4 week chapters concentrating on specific topics like back attacks, half guard, etc. This gives you sufficient time to drill and persist new knowledge. Don't hesitate and come take a trial class!

I came to Ronin Athletics with ambition of restarting my training in Jiu-Jitsu after a short time at another academy a few years prior. Suffice to say I was more than a little nervous when I signed up for their intro class and even more nervous entering through the glass doors. Joining about 7 months ago, I couldn't be more thrilled with the program, service, and culture at Ronin Athletics. Whatever nerves I felt when I first walked in or nerves I feel before every class is gone within the first few minutes of class beginning. The self-defense curriculum of Gracie Jiu-Jiitsu that Ronin Athletics provides for their beginner program is like nothing else I have been exposed to. Being within the robust Jiu-Jitsu scene in New York City, Ronin Athletic stands out with their priority on self-defense, consistent instruction, and fostering a training environment where safety is as important as learning. My previous exposure to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training I can say that the same amount of time I spent at my previous academy and now at Ronin Athletics, that my time with Coaches Christian, Bart, Xavier, and the rest of the Ronin team, my development in the art has been quicker and deeper due to their methodology. Coming from the eastern edge of Queens, I am more than happy to commute to Manhattan due to the great team, generous training partners, and the polished product offered. I look forward to continuing with the Gracie Combatives program and to eventually join their advanced Master Cycle program.

Their approach not only enhances physical skills but also instills confidence and discipline in young learners. The gym's accommodating nature ensures that every child, regardless of their skill level, feels valued and supported. Witnessing my daughter's growth and enthusiasm for Jiu-Jitsu has been a joy, and I am grateful for the positive environment that Ronin Athletics provides for young learners. The gym's ability to cater to all levels, coupled with its experienced coaching staff and well-rounded student body, makes it a standout in New York City. Joining Ronin a little over 6 months ago has been a great decision. The instructors are fantastic and keep the atmosphere safe but fun and dynamic. The beginner curriculum serves as a great foundation in self defense with nuances built in for different circumstances and scenarios. The gym is conveniently located near grand central in New York City. A big reason why I chose Ronin was that they teach Gracie Jiu Jitsu, which allows you to train at other Gracie certified gyms throughout the country when traveling. If you are looking for the most informed and thorough technical Gracie Jiu-Jitsu training in NYC for self-defense, this is the place. Our first experience with the school was in 2021 when they were preparing to roll out their Bullyproof program for kids. My son enrolled in the class and both he and I were consumed with the technical and mental proficiency that we took home after every class. About 11 months later I was jealous of his training, so I also enrolled in the Gracie Combatives program (or as he calls it, the grown-up class). Through the years the combined study on the mat, along with independent study into the art, and watching the supplemental instructional videos that come with enrollment, have shown me that there are many approaches to Jiu-Jitsu training. The approach that is taken by the Gracie University CTC, like this one, creates the safest and most supportive technical training you can get. If you are considering getting into Jiu-Jitsu, or have a loved one of any age or gender that is interested, start here!

Ive been coming to this dojo for 2 years now and i have nothing but great things to say. They answer all your questions, they make sure you learn fully and promptly and it just works. They provide mind boggling jiu jitsu classes that get you thinking and rolling. I usually don’t give 5 star reviews but its like a family environment. Theres women empowered classes for women that want to only train with other women that offers a pretty pink belt too. Amazing environment for beginners and professionals alike. I found them through a pal thats a black belt in Karate i wanted to be a ninja and once i found them it was forward from there.

Joining Ronin Athletics was my first-time training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and self-defense. I have practiced several striking martial arts, including Kyokushin Karate and Muay Thai, but Ronin Athletic made me discover a hidden passion for grappling martial arts and especially jiu-jitsu. Their curriculum is well-structured: The “Gracie Combatives” and “Reflex Development” curriculums introduce new students onto self-defense techniques and jiu-jitsu basics. These classes allowed me to not only learn beginner techniques but also to learn how to prevent injuries (including injuring others). The “Master Cycle” curriculum is designed for learning advanced techniques, and it’s taught through classes broken down into technique and rolling/sparring. Not only is the teaching quality excellent but the place is spotless, with the staff ensuring to keep it clean and sanitized at all times. Instructors are extremely professional, skilled, caring and dedicated to each student. There’s a real sense of community; everyone has the mindset of helping each other and in particular higher belts towards lower belts. Their location in Midtown Manhattan is super convenient; it’s near many subway/bus lines including Grand Central Station giving multiple access options regardless of where you come from. Almost 1 year training at Ronin Athletics, and I cannot stress enough how satisfied I am with everything this academy offers. I feel great every time I go to train!

Master Christian has built a warm and inviting space filled with knowledge and adept teachers of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Right in the heart of Manhattan, Ronin Athletics is a complete and enjoyable environment to confidently learn how to be safe in real life scary situations. From kids to adults, no previous experience required, Master Christian and his amazing team will expertly guide you from your first class and you will never regret the day you walked in to Ronin Athletics. I never go to NYC, without planning a spirited visit to learn from a perfect teacher, Master Christian.

New York City has a lot of options for jiu-jitsu training, and Ronin is the best for my money! There are many great sport-centered gyms, but Ronin always emphasizes jiu-jitsu for self defense first and foremost. They use the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu structure that makes getting started easy and not scary, and guarantees that you won’t get injured or beat up right off the bat! But once you get that foundation, you’ll learn all the competitive sport stuff too. Bonus: Everyone there is really nice! Can’t recommend enough!

I have been attending the Gracie Combative classes at Ronin Athletics for the past 4 months and could not be happier with my decision to join this academy. As someone who grew up and currently lives in New York City, I only wish I found them sooner. Everything about this place is top notch. The environment and culture is extremely positive, with everyone helping one another improve their skills and practice. The attention to detail within the curriculum is first class. The instructors are extremely well trained and explain/demonstrate the techniques seamlessly which makes it both easy and fun learn. As a NYC public high school teacher and baseball coach for over a decade, I know exactly what high level teaching is when I see it. I’d highly recommend Ronin Athletics for anyone looking to learn Jiu Jitsu the correct way (as well as for self defense), in an environment with great people and positive vibes.

I started the combatives program in New York City to learn self-defense. Christian, Bart, Xavier, and the extended team are true professionals and teachers. Everyone in the program deeply respects the material and each other. I recently progressed to the master cycle and was impressed by how eager everyone is to help you grasp complex topics.Whether you are seeking self-defense or a place to practice sport Jiu Jitsu, I highly recommend Ronin Athletics!

Thank you Christian for an amazing jiujitsu experience at your dojo in NYC! I was visiting NYC and was referred to Christian’s dojo because it is a Gracie Certified Training Center. The instructors Christian, Jasper and Richard were all very helpful and friendly. They helped me learn new jiujitsu skills each class! All of the other students were friendly and welcoming. I strongly recommend you visit Christian and his dojo at 265 Madison Avenue, Manhattan NYC!

I highly recommend Ronin Athletics for anyone looking to learn jiu jitsu or other self defense in New York City. When I first started taking classes here I had no experience in any form of martial arts or self defense. Now less than a year later I feel very confident in my abilities to defend myself in any physical altercation that I may come across. This location teaches Gracie Jiu Jitsu in a structured and organized manner, with specific classes offered on each day, and often there are both afternoon and evening classes offered to accommodate for different people’s schedules. There are also video lessons included so you can look online if you forget any of the details to the techniques learned in class. The classes are tailored towards beginners and also allow for more experienced people to refine their skills. There are also more advanced classes offered for when you become more experienced and improve. If you’re looking to learn self defense in NYC, you should definitely give Ronin Athletics a try.

Ronin Athletics is the only Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Certified gym in New York City. The school offers a systematic approach to jiu-jitsu with an emphasis on self-defense. Kickboxing is also offered as well as classes for kids and self-defense designed especially for women. Head Coach Christian Montes brings years of experience in jiu-jitsu as well as mixed martial arts. He is deeply involved in the progress of his students and in creating a training environment that is comfortable and safe for everyone. I am 51 years old and 145 pounds and have been able to train safely at Ronin athletics for years. The gym is located in a clean, welcoming space right near Grand Central Station in midtown Manhattan in the shadows of the Chrysler and Empire State Buildings.

Great place to learn and/or enhance your self-defense capabilities with Gracie Jiu Jitsu in NYC. Coaches emphasis on technical skills while fostering a safe training environment creates the perfect learning atmosphere. After attending a few training sessions, I decided to enroll my 4-year-old son, who loves it. I highly recommend attending all sessions led by head coach Christian. Although I recently transitioned to the “Master Cycle” program, I still try making his training classes in “Gracie Combatives” (when time allows), a must for those looking to hone those jiu jitsu skills, in my opinion. Also, a big shout-out to coach Bart, whose patience and expertise have benefitted me greatly. I’d also like to highlight the work of coaches Xavier, Aiden and David (in no particular order) for their ongoing commitment to my development in the sport. Saturdays are great for kids, with a full coach roster making it fun, instructive and engaging for the little ones. Coach Aiden is a likely favorite in “Gracie Bulletproof”, and my kid also enjoys being on coach Rick’s team (best strategies on Game Day)

Learning jiu jitsu was a dream deferred for me. But I’m finally doing it. This gym is very conducive to learning. The coaches are patient with all levels of athleticism and ages. The gym is in a central convenient location in Midtown. There are day -as well as night and weekend classes. Ive improved flexibility as well as dropped a few pounds. I’ve enjoyed the benefits of learning Jiu Jitsu to the point that I’ve gotten my grade school child involved. He enjoys it as well, as it has improved his self confidence and helped him when the school bullies have challenged him when teachers weren’t around. I would definitely recommend a trial class to see if Jiu Jitsu is for you. As for me -Jiu Jitsu has changed my life .. I love it and will never be the same

Excellent choice for learning Gracie Jiu Jitsu with an emphasis on self defense. It is a smaller dojo thus the instructors know you and you get a lot of one on one attention. Christian infuses this place with his passion and knowledge of the art.

I'm currently taking Gracie Jiu Jitsu (Gracie Combatives) classes and will say that the experience at Ronin Athletics is excellent. Each class is designed to be very accessible regardless of prior experience and focuses on building a strong Jiu Jitsu foundation before moving on to more rigorous sessions. The facility itself is bright, clean, and is centrally located in midtown Manhattan. Their trial program was also a great way to take full classes and get a feel for what the program is like before committing to a membership. Plus, once you join you gain access to all the resources that a Gracie membership has to offer (online training videos, the ability to train at satellite training centers, etc), which you wouldn't get from any other unaffiliated Jiu Jitsu gym.

Been training Jiu Jitsu here for about 6 months now & super lucky I chose this place. I did some research before joining & found Manhattan to have A LOT of world class schools ( including Ronin). What made me choose this academy isn't just the friendly atmosphere & the champion instructor, which many other schools had, but from my first trial lesson until today, you get a sense the sole focus of this school is in the development of their students-they make it about ME. First-their curriculum is SOLID. Every class I attend I'm prepared for before hand, because they're posted a month in advance& I have online access to the lesson so I can review before & after. The lesson's are structured & cohesive where they build upon one another. Because the lessons are planned out, it changes the dynamic of the training session. My partners automatically work with me on learning the technique of the day, rather than grind me down to get a win. It's almost like high school lab where you're working with one another to refine your knowledge. Don't get me wrong it's still physically & mentally challenging-but it's assuring to know that I'm retaining this stuff after every class I attend. These guys are bigger part of a network called Gracie University & Ronin is the NYC official training center. It's really self-evident that they designed the program to convey Jiu Jitsu in the most efficient & injury free way. If you're shopping around, I'd suggest you at least take a trial lesson so you can compare their teaching methodology to the other gyms you're considering. All-in-all, Jiu Jitsu is AMAZING so even if you don't join Ronin, it's definitely something everyone should practice. Hope this helps.

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu CTC in New York City is the place to train for any age or gender. I completed Combatives at their old location in 2019. I left NYC shortly after and still envy the time I spent there. If you are 30+ and want to meet new people, get a good workout in, and learn some self-defense and be able to go to work in the morning then this is the place for you. You don't have to be flexible or strong or athletic to thrive here. If you are younger and looking to compete then you can still do that at Ronin Athletics without concern of getting injured often. You can still learn great technique, and the coaches are more than willing to spend extra time with those that live Jiu-Jitsu. I honestly think some of the coaches would love helping students that wants to compete. I recently visited their new location and the place is beautiful. This is one of the cleanest "sports facilities" I have ever been in. They even cleaned the mats in-between some classes, which is rarely done at other places, if at all. The instructors are very detailed and want to help their students learn. Everyone in the class (Combatives and Master Cycle) is super friendly and not looking to "kill" each other (when rolling in master cycle). In my opinion, even other CTCs have a hard time competing with Ronin Athletics.

I joined in February and I’m extremely happy I enrolled in this school. They offer great self defense classes for all ages (perhaps the best in New York City) and their instructors are fantastic. The instructors are patient, motivational and inspiring. Not to mention, it’s a fantastic work out. Not only has Gracie Jiujitsu helped me physically (down over 20 lbs now), but it has also helped me mentally. It helped me be more confident with decisions in life and how I view the world from a different perspective. The students are very accepting and helpful with training. I have a great time and lots of fun with them. It’s like having a second family. I highly recommend this school, their curriculums and the instructors.

As a mom of two boys ages 6 and 10. I put my kids in different activities and none have made an impact on them like Ronin Athletics. My older son during quarantine was reluctant to do any sports. It was a hassle to get him up and out. I was very lucky a family member of mine told me to do a trail class for the Gracie Bullyproof Program. The boys tried the class in August 2020 and they immediately asked me to sign them up. We have been a member ever since. The staff is so welcoming, show so much patience and run their class so smoothly. My older son is in Junior Grapplers program and has formed a bond with his teammates. He will be soon traveling alone to middle school in NYC and I am pleased to see the confidence he has built during his time a Ronin. My 6 year old is in Little Champs program he is very shy but week after week, Coach Christian and his team have been able to bring him out of his shell. I am so pleased they have found something to look forward to in jujitsu. My husband and I go 4x a week to Ronin Athletics but it is worth it to see them learn and grow all while having fun.

Yes, the reviews are real. This is a great place. Before I found my way to Ronin I took introductory BJJ classes at two other places that were both close to where I live in Manhattan. Although I've studied standing Martial Arts for years I was new to BJJ and at these places, I was thrown into rolling in the first class before I even knew the most simple basics. I could have used my strength and bigger size to muscle through the opponents I faced but that wasn't why I wanted to learn BJJ, I wanted to learn techniques I could use on opponents who might be bigger and stronger than me. And unfortunately, that method of teaching seems to be all too common at BJJ schools. Luckily I was familiar with Gracie University, had watched their videos' and looked into their curriculum and was thrilled when I found out they have a Certified Training Center in NYC. So my next stop was 39th and Madison to take a Gracie Combatives trial class at Ronin Athletics. All I can say is Ronin Athletics exceeded my expectation, so much so that I joined right away. The instructors, Christian and Bart are not only excellent teachers but are also warm, and welcoming. The curriculum is top-notch, this is Gracie Jiu Jitsu as it was taught when they first came to the US, which is self defense oriented (read Worth Defending by Richard Bressler, the Gracie families first US student in 1979.) You know exactly what you're going to learn before each class and you can review the Instructional videos produced by, and starring Ryron and Rener Gracie, both before and after the class. There's nowhere else you'll find a curriculum as well thought out as this, that provides you with all the tools you need to succeed at being the best you can be in a positive and welcoming environment. So if you want to train in a great environment, with great people, I highly recommend you check out Ronin Athletics.

I am currently a student at Ronin athletics in Midtown. I joined the school to participate in the all women’s self defense program created by the Gracie Family, "Women Empowered." At first, I was very intimidated by the school and the program, but the instructors and the students were very welcoming to me as a newcomer. Christian Montes and Lara are really great instructors. Since I started my time in this program they have been very informative and they really take the time to coach and guide us through all of the techniques in great detail. Since the day that I was randomly attacked near my home, I have been reluctant to go out anywhere by myself. Participating in this program has slowly helped me to become more confident in walking around by myself again. My husband still picks me up when I am coming home late, but it's nice to know that I am learning how to defend myself. I really like coming to the school and drilling the techniques with my training partners. We train in a very safe and friendly environment. Each class we are taught a new technique from the Gracie program and take turns drilling them with each other. Unlike most BJJ programs out there, we DO NOT free spar or roll in this class. It is geared specifically for women and designed to prepare us specifically for the kind of scenarios we may encounter on the street. After completing my first training cycle, I have earned one stripe on my white belt. I believe there are 15 classes and you have to take each one 3 times. Then at the end of the program I will be able to test for the "Women Empowered Pink belt." Ladies, if you are reading this, don’t wait around until you are attacked by some low life on the street to start training. Start learning how to protect and defend yourself now, BEFORE anything bad happens to you. Ronin Athletics provides a free trial class so don’t hesitate to go over and give it a go. You will not regret it. If you do go, tell them that Christine sent you!
