I was searching for a place where my daughter would be comfortable with the instructor and the training environment. The Budokan was the place where she felt most safe.... and where I wasn't given a slick sales pitch in a flashy dojo. My daughter has now been training under Sensei Doug for almost 4 years and I have seen her grow leaps in bounds in her confidence, focus and determination. Sensei Doug has a huge heart and treats each child like his own. All the other ranked Black Belts who assist in training with the children are just as wonderful. I can't ask for a better group of people to teach, train and guide my little girl. I myself joined the Dojo shortly after my daughter. The dojo has become my temple and the other members are now like family. I come to train and learn from masters of this "Gentle Art".

The commitment to excellence and the ability to achieve greatness at this Dojo is beyond that of anything I have experienced. My kids joined the dojo in January of 2015 and I joined a few months later, could not have been a better choice. I am completely satisfied with the consistency, intensity and safety of the classes. The instructors are open, approachable, and patient. They are also clearly respected by their peers as top experts in their art. The students are dedicated and welcoming. If you are interested in Jujitsu and can get to the conveniently located dojo, don't miss the opportunity to learn from some of the best.

After over 5 years, the RHB has become my second home (although I often find myself there more than my actual place of residence). The chief instructor, Sensei Doug Knispel Jr, is by far the most knowledgeable person I know in martial arts. He shows a genuine passion for teaching in every class and cares for every student if they were his own children. The fees are by far the cheapest I've encountered - which clearly shows that all of the teachers volunteer their time to create a positive family environment for all who share the same passion. Sensei Doug's wife, Sifu Cathrine Page, has also become my mentor over my tenure with RHB. Through her knowledge in energy work and mindfulness, I've evolved as a person and have grown to understand myself more than I could've with any professional therapist. Her knowledge in acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine is vast and I don't know of any other person who could be more credible. She has treated me for a few serious injuries (not related to the dojo - I've never been injured here), including two dislocated knees, back pain from a car accident, and repetitive strain injury to the wrist. Her expertise has allowed me to participate in events far quicker than any western medical doctor could offer. I now live 45 minutes away from the RHB. While there are multiple decent martial arts facilities within my area, I will continue to sacrifice the time and travel to maintain the close friendships I've developed at the Richmond Hill Budokan. Everyone may have their own politics, religion, family, interests, etc., but this is the one sanctuary where we all are in agreement and share the same passion to train in budo.

I have searched a lot to find the right place for my 6 years old son, who loves martial art, and finally we found this place, which runs by Doug and his wife, a family business. It's been more than a month and I should say I love this place, Doug and his crew are so caring, and it's not just a bout money and business like many other places, this place is all about martial art and respect, my son loves it and he's always anxious to go back, I hope this place keeps the quality of work

It has been open for decades! Coaches are very professional, experienced and patient. They have kids lessons and family lessons. And the fees are really reasonable and affordable! Highly recommend!
