I went in to watch classes at other BJJ gyms before signing up at Renzo Gracie Chicago in Lincoln Park as a 57-year-old with no grappling experience. What swayed me was Professor Frank: his openness, enthusiasm, and knowledge. Two plus years later I show up to 4-5 classes every week and love it. What I appreciate most are the people. Some of the best friends I’ve made in Chicago are from the school. From the professors to the coaches to the students, everyone here is generous with their knowledge and eager to help each other learn. From the senior belts who set the example down to more recent additions, there is a genuine desire to help people get better. No egos. The quality of instruction is of the highest standard. From fighters to families, men, women, kids--the curriculum manages to accommodate everyone. Like me, they keep coming back. Visitors from other schools always tell me how welcoming ours is. The location is convenient, has a private parking lot, the mats and locker room are kept meticulously clean, and there are a variety of classes throughout the day. The professors and coaches are acutely safety conscious. As one of our professors often says, “Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone.”
Posted 1 year agoRenzo Gracie Chicago truly is an amazing place. I started training there about a year ago as a beginner white belt, and I can confidently say that at this point, my favorite part of the day is coming to the gym and training. Professor Frank and Professor CB are world class jiu jitsu practitioners and amazing instructors. They have created a great culture of camaraderie at the gym. I often drill techniques or roll with people who are bigger or more experienced than me, and rather than just crushing me, they let me work, and they give me guidance either during or after the roll. People help each other, and that translates into everyone improving faster. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced practitioner, I highly recommend checking out RGC.
Posted 1 year agoGreat group of guys, and very competent and skilled instructors. I traveled out of town, and this gym was walking distance from where I was staying. I called to drop-in for a class and they were very welcoming, and accommodating. Will certainly stop by again to train when I’m in town. Thanks again for having me -Tank
Posted 1 year agoI was in town on business and wanted to do a drop in class. I called a few gyms and Frank by far was the friendliest and most welcoming. The gym is very clean and has nice amenities. All my training partners were cool and gave me great rolls! The way Frank structures class and explains details is great too. I've visited several gyms away from home, and this is by far my favorite. All around great vibe!
