I came into Oswego Jiu Jitsu with zero background in combat sports, and I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better place to start. From day one, the environment has been friendly, encouraging, and very welcoming to beginners. There’s no ego here—just people who genuinely want to help you learn and improve. I also got my 4-year-old son into it, and he has been loving the classes. He talks about his jiu jitsu moves all the time at home, which has been awesome to see. He was hesitant at first, but the coaches were incredibly patient and encouraged us to keep coming back and checking it out with no pressure or commitment, which made all the difference before he finally jumped right in. I’ve been training 2–3 times a week now and have seen huge improvements in my abilities in a relatively short time. The coaches and even fellow athletes regularly take time out of their own training to help if they see you struggling with a move, which really speaks to the culture here. Overall, Oswego Jiu Jitsu is a great community with a supportive, family-friendly atmosphere. Whether you’re brand new or more experienced, this is an excellent place to train. Highly recommend.

Joe and the others are very nice. I sat in a gi class. And they need a seminar going on. And I only roll no gi. Guys were nice enough to roll with me still. Great atmosphere. Looking forward to going back on another day off

My family has been part of Oswego Jiu Jitsu since they opened their doors in the fall of 2024. My kids started on day one, and after watching the culture they’ve built, I finally took the plunge and started training myself last month. I can say without hesitation that this is a world-class environment for both children and adults. The Leadership: Doug & Joe The heartbeat of any gym is its coaching, and Doug and Joe are as good as they get. They bring a wealth of knowledge to the mats, but more importantly, they are approachable and genuinely invested in every student’s growth. • Joe has an incredible way of breaking down complex movements into "ah-ha" moments. Whether he’s working with the kids or the adults, his patience and attention to detail ensure that you aren't just going through the motions—you’re actually understanding the mechanics of Jiu Jitsu. • Doug brings a fantastic energy to the room. He’s great at keeping the atmosphere light and welcoming while still pushing you to give your best effort. He has a real talent for making the "new person" jitters disappear the moment you step on the mat. The Kids’ Experience Watching my kids train under Doug and Joe has been a highlight. They teach the kids discipline and hard work, but they do it through a lens of respect and fun. My children aren't just learning how to defend themselves; they are learning how to be confident, focused individuals. The Adult Community Stepping on the mats for the first time can be extremely intimidating but the group here is incredibly friendly. There is a total lack of ego. Under Doug and Joe's leadership, the higher belts are always willing to slow down and help you out. It’s a supportive, "iron sharpens iron" environment where everyone wants to see you succeed. If you are looking for a place that feels like a community rather than just a workout, Oswego Jiu Jitsu is it. Doug and Joe have built something special here. Whether you’re a parent looking for a great outlet for your kids or an adult looking to challenge yourself, you won't find a better pair of coaches to guide you.

We sent our 15 yr old here hoping for her to work through some stuff. The coaches are amazing and she took to the classes right away! They worked one on one with her and pushed her to work hard. So thankful for the support for her from OJJ in a rough time for our family. Highly recommend!!
