Our family has been part of the Jiu Jitsu community for years, with our son competing in dozens of tournaments across California. He’s trained full-time at four reputable gyms and done countless drop-ins at schools statewide. Needless to say, we’ve experienced a wide range of coaching styles and gym cultures—yet Oroville Jiu Jitsu stands out above the rest. Ira, the head instructor, has a proven lineage and a deep understanding of the art. More importantly, he teaches with patience, clarity, and humility—qualities that are often missing in schools that emphasize ego over education. Out of all the instructors our son has trained under, Ira is his favorite. That says a lot, especially coming from a young athlete with high-level experience and a serious competitive mindset. The culture at Oroville Jiu Jitsu is respectful, focused, and grounded in legitimate technique. In a small town where some gyms present questionable or unverified credentials, it's refreshing to be part of a program that values authenticity and safety without cutting corners. If you're looking for real Jiu Jitsu, taught the right way, with an instructor who truly cares about each student’s growth—this is the place.

This is a very inclusive gym. Regardless of gender, race, previous experience, learning style, neurodivergence, weight, size, age, etc, Ira is accommodating and meets the students where they’re at. His ability to be open minded allows a two way sharing of information and development of the art that I don’t see in other gyms. This sensei has been professional and invested for the duration of our membership. He gives one on one attention, and works to develop each students’ accuracy, meeting the students where they are at. There have been no safety issues thus far, and I’ve noticed as a result of this, no injuries / apprehension at this gym. Injuries can happen but it is NOT normal to have regular injuries. There is an appreciation for the technical side of things and I’m seeing that result in safer and more successful practice and competition. It took me a few years but now I know a little about doing some research into prospective coaches’ backgrounds and training. I learned Ira D’s training and belts are legit and he still competes, himself. That’s important to me. I can recommend this gym.

We have been taking Jiu-Jitsu for several months now. The instructor's are wonderful. Ira the owner is helpful with any questions and great with the kids. He expects discipline from the kids and holds the line with them - very good for the kids. My son has grown so much in confidence and skill in a short time. We are excited for his younger brother to be joining as well. Highly recommend Oroville Jiu-Jitsu Academy!
