Ohm is a special place to do BJJ in Birmingham. It doesn’t take long to figure out that the people are genuine and looking to help each other grow both in BJJ and other areas of life. I highly recommend this spot for people that are both new to BJJ and those who have been rolling for years. You can’t go wrong with Ohm!
Posted 1 year agoThis is a superbly well run and welcoming Jiu Jitsu gym located in Birmingham, Alabama. There is plenty of parking and the gym has showers and a drinking bottle refill station. The gym area, changing rooms and bathroom/shower facilities were spotlessly clean. The instruction is clearly delivered by knowledgeable instructors who provide both broad concept and specific details during lessons. There was also plenty of time allowed for open rolling and sparring in addition to the well structured and controlled teaching provided. I was a visitor looking for mat-time whilst on vacation and I am an older student. I was made to feel immediately and warmly welcomed. The club has a clearly established culture of hard but respectful training and I was impressed by the fact that everyone was willing to roll everyone, with polite declining of a round being encouraged and respected if required. The demographic mix of the club was notable in its variety. In my experience, older students and female students in particular don’t train at clubs that are poorly run, unsafe, disrespectful or have a bad attitude. The diverse range of age, gender and ability at Ohm is a testament to the environment as much as the instruction. I very much enjoyed and benefitted from training here as a visitor and if I lived in Birmingham or the surrounding area, this would be my regular club of choice - I can think of no higher recommendation.
Posted 1 year agoOutstanding overall experience! I travel for work and train at jiu jitsu gyms across the country wherever work takes me. I found this gym by both word of mouth and social media. One of Ohm's head instructors, Russell, introduced me to the registration process (simple) and then taught a well-rounded and extremely focused no-gi noon class. I came back later that same day for the 6 pm ni-gi class and had the same experience - high level instruction with functional positional drilling followed by an open roll session that was just what I needed! 10/10 recommend.
Posted 1 year agoCame for a beginners class and was pleasantly impressed at Russell’s teaching skills. Everything is broken down into micro steps so it’s very easy to learn. Most members seem to be higher belt classes, but maybe I came in at a weird time. Facilities are great and clean. Members are awesome.
I went to the beginner class like a month ago with a friend of mine and was super impressed by the attention to detail of the instructors and their genuine care that you do the movement correctly. Loved the class! Russell and DJ were really welcoming from the start. DJ also helped my friend and I in the parking lot because my car died. He made sure I was jumped off and good to go and he didn’t have to do that but I greatly appreciated it! 5 star class and 5 star experience overall! I will be back once I can get my schedule straightened out.
Staff/coaches were professional experienced. Had a great experience. Everyone was very welcoming. Seems like a great place to train.
I dropped in while visiting, everyone was super nice and I learned a lot
Great training. I got to learn from 2 of black belts: DJ and Russell. They the framework for success but their methods allow for each student to develop their own style that fits their personality and strengths. Great mix of men and women training, they were very welcoming to me as an outside visiting the area. If I lived in the Birmingham area, I would train here 100% and not look elsewhere. I can’t wait for my next work trip to Birmingham to train again.
Dropped in while visiting the Birmingham area. Super clean, knowledgeable, inviting school. Professor/s were awesome instructors, friendly and offered calm but serious rolls. Highly recommended for anyone who’s looking for a great gym to learn jiu jitsu or improve on your skills. Thank you for having me.
Came for an introductory class. DJ the co owner was the instructor for the session and was a great teacher. I have no jiu jitsu or martial arts experience, but was able to understand some of the basics through DJ’s intuitive explanations and just learn-by-doing since we quickly switched to some timed sparring. Environment seemed great for all ages and a good space to avoid injuries. P.s. was great mobility & cardio training too
I dropped in while visiting town for a weekend. Instructors Russ and DJ were very skilled and incredibly welcoming. I have been training BJJ for about 20 years and would recommend Ohm to anyone living in or visiting Birmingham.
This space is amazing. It's clean, the art is awesome, and the overall arrangement is perfect. What's even better is the caliber of the instructors. Russell in particular is an excellent teacher — he's patient, clear, and doesn't mind explaining, demoing, or breaking down movements piece by piece until his students feel comfortable. I was relatively new to jiu jitsu when I first visited Ohm (only a few previous classes), but I didn't feel intimidated at all as a new student. I highly recommend Ohm to anyone interested in learning more about jiu jitsu, whether you're a complete beginner or have years of experience.
As someone who was initially hesitant to try out martial arts classes for the first time as an adult, Ohm was a knockout. Russell my instructor was super friendly and approachable, and the whole atmosphere of the place was friendly and welcoming. Not to mention the overall vibe of the place is just really cool. If you're thinking about taking classes for the first time or looking to move to a more welcoming place, I'd OHM is a no-brainer.
If you're looking for a gym where everyone is laid back when they're hanging out, but where they go hard when they get on the mats, Ohm is the gym you're looking for. You can see even from the posters on the wall that these guys have fun with jiu jitsu and don't take themselves too seriously, and that's true of everyone in the gym. I never feel awkward — there's always someone who's going to say hi and ask you what's going on and help you out with whatever you need. But you see the discipline and seriousness come out when they start rolling. The instructors couldn't be more supportive, whether you're a black belt or you're just starting out and don't really know what jiu jitsu is. They're both black belts and are super informed about what's going on in jiu jitsu even beyond their gym, but they're also really laid back guys and some of the best teachers I've ever experienced, not just in jiu jitsu, but in any sport or workout. I like that you don't have to wear the traditional gi (most people don't), and that you don't even have to buy any of their branded rashguards or anything like that. You can wear your own stuff if you want to and they don't pressure you, even though their rashguards and spats are pretty cool and worth buying if you end up liking it. They have a free trial going all the time, they don't make you sign a contract, and their prices are some of the best in town, so really there's no reason not to try it.
Best jiu jitsu gym in Birmingham!
Ohm is a great place. Russell and DJ are a great team and offer top notch instruction. They are very welcoming and encouraging to newcomers. If you have any interest in training BJJ, this is the place to do it.
Russel is a fantastic teacher who understands the ins and puts of Jujitsu. He has fantastic pacing where he is able to reach all types of learners. In the classes I was involved in we had a mix of people from those who are highly competitive to those who just wanted to understand the basics. Russel was able to teach in a way where each person got what they needed. If you are looking for a new gym or have always wanted to try jujitsu but have never found the opportunity, this is the gym for you.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my classes at Ohm. I learned a lot in a small amount of time and Russell has been amazing to work with. It has been a really positive experience and I would recommend anyone is thinking about it to join up. I had zero Jiu Jitsu experience and they have been super positive and patience with me as I learn. Everyone has been really nice and friendly.
Ohm is a super nice gym, and Russell is a great instructor. I learned a lot about jiu jistu in a short period of time, and I felt empowered to keep learning, too! Can't wait for my schedule to clear up so I can come to more classes at Ohm!
Very welcoming vibe, knowledgable teachers, and perfect for all skill levels! I know there can be a general, daunting feeling when starting out at gyms like this, but I can speak from experience that Russell and his team are excited to meet you where you are and help you grow in a judgement-free environment.
No better place I’d train bjj than at Ohm jiu jitsu. From white to black belts, the atmosphere is friendly while still challenging you to improve your game. DJ and Russel, the 2 instructors, are great teachers and overall super nice people who really want you to become good at bjj. If you’re looking for a bjj gym that has its finger on the pulse of what’s going on in current bjj and also on what modern teaching approches yield results, look no further, Ohm jiu jitsu will deliver.
My uncle used to get drunk and beat me up for fun, a couple months of training with Russel and DJ and now the tables have turned.
Ohm is a cool gym. It’s in a great location, it’s clean, and well appointed. Everyone is friendly, welcoming, and open to both new members and experienced grapplers. I’ve trained with both of the coaches for a long time. I can honestly say that that they care very much about the sport, the students, and love teaching. And they do a great job with it. Jiu Jitsu is for everyone. There’s no reason to wait. Come to a free trial class today and learn what it can do for you.
The best! The people there were very kind, understanding, and patient with me who hadn’t had any experiences in jiu jitsu. Absolutely loved the laid back environment, sportsmanship, and respect from them.
Great instruction, great people, great space. If you are at all considering exploring this sport and hobby, I cannot think of a better environment to do so. Come train.
DJ and Russell do a great job at making the drills accessible to all skill levels and provide a fun and laid back class setting, building on the basic concepts and sharpening technique along the way. I attend classes with my spouse when I can and have always felt welcome and safe amongst this group of instructors and members. They provide gym gear if you dont have any or would just like to buy some cool spats and/or rash guard with their logo. They also have t-shirts for sale as well that are pretty cool and can be changed into after a sweaty practice. Hope to see you on the mats!
Great place for people who are thinking about getting into bjj.
Ohm is a great looking gym, with smart, patient instructors and a strong group of friendly members. There is a lot of natural light, a large inviting mat space and an friendly atmosphere. I find Ohm is an easy place to train. There are good partners of all ages and levels to train with and an inviting and easygoing atmosphere for learning. There has been a lot of personal attention from the owners/Professors. Russell and DJ have the effortless grappling the rest of us strive for. They have the passion, patience and skill to accelerate your seasoned grappling game and also to make self-defense accessible to beginners. There are players of most ages and sizes to train with, plenty of savvy upper belts and also white belts just beginning their jiujitsu journey.
Great new jiu jitsu gym in Avondale, Bham area! Amazing place to start your training as an absolute beginner as well as continue to build your skills from blue belt all the way up to black belt. It’s definitely the place to check out if jiu jitsu has ever caught your eye!
