Top-notch academy. Instructors and members foster a sense of camaraderie and make it fun. The class structure is really efficient so you get quality training each time. Moved back to the area last November and got lucky finding this place.

My first experience trying any martial art, I've never felt so supported in a community. The teachers in every class all take time to make sure everyone is understanding the lesson of the day. The culture here is deep, nothing but respect and gratitude for NCJJ.
North Coast Jiu Jitsu is an amazing gym. Family friendly and welcoming to all, any level of training, any background. They welcomed our family with open arms and only trained with positive energy and a smile on their face. They push the adult class and the kids class is awesome too. They train with great technical expertise and grace. Our whole family went to North Coast and have not regretted it. I signed up at this academy 6 months ago, and it has been one of the best decisions of my life. Not only will you grow as a grappler and martial artist, but you will also make some great friends along the way. True team/family environment here. I've been rolling for 10 years and have been at 4 different academies in as many cities. Prof. Jake and the family at NCJJ are as welcoming and talented as any location. The level of teaching is incredibly high level and always consistent (gi/no gi and all class times). Belts are earned here and rolls with any colored belt will quickly prove my point. My favorite part of NCJJ is how humble and friendly everyone is - a reflection of Prof. Jake.
Great academy with amazing vibes for families and individuals. Our daughter has been going here since she was 5 and she loves it, I started training a little bit after her and have nothing but great things to say. The academy is nice and clean, the instructors and great and it’s an overall great vibe and humble place to train for both kids and adults. Stop by and talk to Professor Jake Mapes (owner) a 3rd Degree Black Belt under Rickson Gracie’s lineage. He received his Black Belt in 2009 from Luis Heredia, who is under the legendary Rickson Gracie.

Awesome experience. Jake and his staff are the real deal and true masters of their craft. Kids classes are a well rounded mix of warm up, conditioning, and developing techniques. Class left my 9 y/o daughter exhausted and excited for her next class.

NCJJ is the best place I've trained, hands down. I have trained at other gyms over the last few years and nothing can match the vibe of the classes or the knowledge of Jake. If you want to push yourself and compete, there are competition focused classes. If you want to learn, there are mellow intro classes. Everyone is supportive and looks out for each other. Overall, I wouldn't recommend anywhere but NCJJ 🤙

I have been attending this gym for about a month with my son and I have been impressed with the gym. The facility is clean and well taken care of and the camaraderie of the patrons is clear. This family orientated gym is an excellent place to practice jiu-jitsu and a great place for a beginner to start in a welcoming environment. I've been training here since they've opened and glad I did! Jake and Kris are exceptionally skilled on the mats and both have their own style. Everyone is friendly, supportive and push each other to get better. My wife trains here also, and their kids program looks amazing as well. Fun for the whole family!
I’ve been coming here for almost a year and I can honestly say this is the most welcoming dojo I’ve ever been to! EVERYONE is humble and willing to learn from one another. The energy in this place is fantastic because the way it’s run. The jiujitsu is next level. Professors Kris and Jake are great. They treated me like family since day one!
Looked and looked for a Academy after moving from downtown San Diego. Came in for a free class and joined the same night! Very low-key and friendly environment, exactly what I wanted. Great variety of classes (striking and wrestling too) and great instructors. Pay them a visit!

We are very fortunate to have come across this Jiu Jitsu school. We signed up our 7 year old son first and he loved it, now our 4 year old daughter is taking classes as well. Jake, Chris, and Taylor are fantastic instructors who not only show plenty of patience, but have helped teach our kids focus and discipline. My sons' second grade teacher even remarked that he's more focused and on task in class, I attribute that directly to North Coast Jiu Jitsu as it's been a challenge for him in the past. Highly recommended!
Terrific staff, culture and facility. Welcoming and familial environment, this is truly a great getaway from the stress and pace of everyday life. All three of my children (9,5, and 3) attend as well and teaches them sportsmanship, discipline and team work.

Jake and Kris are in a class of their own. Their knowledge, patience with new students, friendliness, and ability to communicate the lesson in an easy to understand way makes for a fantastic environment to learn.
I bring my 5 year old daughter here. All I can say is these guys are great with all kids of all shapes and sizes. They have every type of personality in this class and they deal with all of them well. They are great a teaching jiu jitsu and should probably start a day care service as well ;) seriously though Great job guys thanks.

They offer a broad schedule, which makes it possible to find a few days each week to train, and they provide a variety of different classes. So whether you want to learn self-defense, train in a gi, or do no gi, you will find something you'd enjoy.

Stopped by one afternoon to just check out the number of classes and times they offered. End up talking with Kris for about 15mins and felt really at home. Met Jake a couple of days later while joining in on the no-gi class, very happy with what these 2 coaches have to offer.
This is a world class jiujitsu school with an amazing kid's and women program that really help first timers get a true understanding of what Brazilian jiu-jitsu is. Also I like to include that there competition team is growing and learning fast as well, because of professor Jake Mapes and professor Kris Neilsen they explain each move you learn in detail and with timing that can teach a wide spectrum of individuals quickly, not only that, they also have a great gun and knife defense program that which is really needed right now. I'm so thankful to have this type of martial art here in Vista California. And I've been going here for a couple of months and I like to say that every student and the professor's welcome everyone with open arms, everyone is considerate, funny, respectful and everyone helps each other out, no one gets left behind. This place will change your life..
North Coast has been my BJJ home for the last several months since moving and since they've opened. Looked around for several weeks, checked out other gyms, and made the decision to join the NCBJJ family. It was the right decision. Both coaches, Jake and Kris, take the time to explain techniques and progression of moves. They are laid back and fun and yet explosive and competitive. I truly enjoy that these professors are hands-on. No sitting in the corner. They roll and roll...I'm looking forward to the growth of the team. Clean facility. This place is amazing. Kris and Jake are both dedicated coaches with a ton of patience. It's a bit daunting going into a place where you are brand new... but Jake and Kris make you feel at home, and keep showing you techniques to build up your confidence. I've been going for a few months now, and I think I caught the bug.
Jake and Kris are both awesome coaches. They're very knowledgeable and will definitely help you get to the next level. There is plenty of mat space and it's super clean. There's space and equipment to work out. Best thing is that they're open 7 days a week and everyone is very welcoming.
Jake and Chris have put together a very well thought out program. Physically the gym is very simple and clean and free of distractions, with mats upstairs and down as well as showers and some lifting equipment for strength and conditioning. They offer a great schedule with many options to train so that no matter how crazy your life is you can always find some quality mat time at least a couple times a week. They are very detail oriented and willingly share those details to make your technique crisp and effective, and go out of their way to coach their students during class. All the training partners are very respectful and great to roll with, no matter if it's their first days or if they've been around a long time. I'm very happy to train in a quality school with quality people, and happily recommend anyone who might be interested check it out! You will be happy you did!
