When you’ve been “fighting battles” your whole life, you learn to adapt and sometimes, even learn to love the fight. So I’ve always liked fighting, but I never had a true passion for it. I was never the biggest guy in the room, and because of that, I never took combat or martial arts training seriously. That changed when I discovered grappling specifically Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) where you can use ground fighting, positional control, and leverage to overcome bigger, stronger opponents. I tried a few BJJ classes at another gym before realizing that not only did I have a passion for BJJ, but I also wanted to train in more community-based environment that offers a mixed variety of martial arts disciplines all in one place. That’s when I found Modern Warrior. I was a bit nervous at first since I’m a beginner in all martial arts, but after joining last week, the Modern Warrior community has been incredibly welcoming and has given me a safe space where I truly feel like I belong. The dojo is clean, respectful, friendly, and full of passion for what they do, and it really shows. I don’t usually write reviews or give recommendations, but I’d definitely recommend this dojo to anyone interested in martial arts. Thank you Sasha, Cody, Jason, Keith, & the rest of the Modern Warrior team & community. looking forward to seeing you all again. Osu!

I really enjoyed this gym. The enviroment is positive, inclusive and friendly, if you take a look at their website you will be amazed by the high qualified teachers in so many different disciplines; bjj, kickboxing, boxing, karate, grappling... I didn't have any previous experience at all with martial arts neither I was a committed person with any physical activity but I was excited to go to this gym every week and it helped me to improve motivation, discipline and confidence. If you are thinking to boost your confidence and learn real self defence give this gym a try. No matter if you are a beginner or somebody looking to enhance their technique give it a try and you will find here your forever gym to train.

Joining this dojo has been an incredible experience🩷 The instructors are highly qualified and truly care about each student’s growth. Abi, a five-time Canadian judo national champion, provides expert coaching in a welcoming environment. Jiujitsu classes with Olympic-level wrestler Cody and self-grappling coach Cruze are top-tier. Kickboxing and boxing classes, led by Jason and Sasha, are equally outstanding. Sasha is a professional kickboxer in RIZE Japan, ranked #6 in his weight class among hundreds. He also holds a black belt in karate and I remember last year he represented Canada in a world karate tournament in Japan, where he was awarded for his performance. As a beginner and female student, I was nervous at first, but I never felt left out. The dojo is always clean, safe, and well-maintained—after 3.5+ years here, I’ve never seen a staph or ringworm outbreak. The positive, supportive community feels like family, and the variety of classes suits all skill levels. Highly recommend this dojo for anyone looking for affordable, high-quality martial arts training with amazing coaches and a fantastic culture. Ofc 5/5, it’s honestly my first time leaving a google review, and this dojo is worth the effort of leaving a long review lol Plus, it’s BC’s first complete ground & grappling self-defense program!

I had a great experience training at Modern Warrior in 2024. I joined mainly for their kickboxing program which is facilitated by head coach, Sasha, who has a wealth of experience across all martial arts & combat sports along with being a pro kickboxer out of RISE in Japan. The class structure for kickboxing involved a ton of practical drills with sparring towards the end of class. Sasha is always open to share his feedback to his students and his light-hearted nature makes him easy to get along with (although he can turn it up in sparring when he wants to!). The students in the gym are amazing as well. I appreciated the smaller classes which created an inclusive community feel where you're not just a 'number'. Sparring rounds were always respectful while giving students opportunities to implement their techniques and ideas in a safe environment. Also want to give some recognition to their boxing program ran by Jason where I would drop by occasionally for some training and sparring. They have a number of students competing regularly at local events so you can find some good rounds with their boxers as well!

I’ve been taking kickboxing classes here since last year, and it’s been an amazing experience. The classes are great for both beginners and more advanced students, with a perfect balance of cardio and skill development. The coaches are passionate, friendly, and always make an effort to give personal attention to each student. Highly recommend!
