Having finished my time in the bay area and now training at a new gym closer to home, it's my pleasure to give my highest praises possible for this academy. For the year and a half that I spent at Mineiro BJJ, I've come to appreciate the art of BJJ and become a better competitor in the process.
I came to this academy with some of my friends while in college, and with no experience in martial arts at all, I took a trial class and signed up hoping to pick up a fun hobby. From the start, the head coaches, Marcelo and his wife, Liz, presented an environment that was welcoming, engaging, and educational. With some of the most straightforward and no-nonsense approaches to instruction I've seen in a teaching environment, it truly felt like I was always focused on improving my BJJ game and not on the teaching style or nuances of the gym; a trait that was incredibly helpful for someone who had no experience in this kind of environment beforehand. Despite me sucking so bad from the start and all my reservations and questions, Marcelo and Liz patiently and consistently provided an environment that I felt inclined to keep coming back to, despite my friends leaving the program due to personal reasons. Presenting an older-school style of jiu-jitsu, Marcelo is a phenomenal professor and incredibly knowledgeable in the sport. It's clear from the start that not only does he have the background to coach all levels of BJJ, but that he's also passionate enough to make you actually WANT to learn about it too. The level of professionalism and kindness that Marcelo, Liz, and the other assistant coaches present has truly been a joy to experience.
The environment is incredible too; there are serious competitors in every class offered at this gym, and I never had a session where I felt that I wasn't challenged to become better at so many different aspects. Surprisingly, with how high-level the students are here, the community is fantastic too. Everyone at this gym is incredibly friendly, with people/rolling partners who you can constantly learn from and are willing to always teach you. To highlight how awesome the community is: in preparing for one of my upcoming tournaments this past year and suffering a muscle strain in my neck, the coaches referred me to a classmate (a chiropractor!) who offered to and got me fixed me up the next day free of charge. Just to help me get in competition mode that weekend! Mineiro BJJ has a community that has a way of making you feel included, no matter what walk of life you come from.
For any newcomers to BJJ or the sport in general, this gym in Emeryville is a safe and effective place to begin your martial arts/BJJ journey either for hobby or sport. For those who are intermediate/advanced in the sport and want to go even higher, Mineiro BJJ consistently places within the top academies at Jiu Jitsu World League rankings and has world-class competitors to ensure productive rolling sessions in every class. I'm thankful to the instructors and community at Mineiro BJJ for being the best possible introduction to the sport possible.
