Both my son (5) and I (43) started at McHugh Jiu Jitsu Collingswood a little over a year ago and love it! It's been so fun and transformative for us that my wife and daughter (3) eventually signed up as well, making it a shared family activity! As a dad, I’ve had the pleasure of watching my kids grow and become more confident on and off the mat in just a short amount of time. They’ve learned body awareness, self-defense, discipline, leadership, and how to have fun with their teammates. Professor Battle and Coach James are really great with the kids and have created a safe and structured environment for the kids to learn and challenge themselves. For myself, although I was interested in joining, I was a bit nervous about starting at my age and without a strong athletic or martial arts background. The program and the coaches are super inviting and have a way of making complex Jiu Jitsu accessible to beginners. Each class has people of all shapes, sizes, ages, athletic abilities, and experience so it’s easy to jump in and someone is always willing to help you out and show you what to do. Aside from learning a new skill, it’s also a heck of a full body workout where a 6 minute ‘roll’ will make me feel like I just ran a 5K race! My wife became interested after watching classes as well, but was a bit hesitant to jump in due to some old sports injuries. However, after attending the free women’s self defense seminars she realized that Jiu Jitsu and the environment at McHugh allows you to scale the intensity level up or down to a spot that is right for you. Aside from the work out she loves the great community, the camaraderie among her training partners, and the opportunity it presents as an outlet for her competitive side! All in all we’re so happy we stumbled upon McHugh BJJ and became part of the tribe. Can’t picture our lives in Collingswood without it!

This school has been one of the best things in my life for the last year and a half and I am so grateful to be a member here. I cannot say anything but positive things about Coach James, Coach Battle and all the staff. They are the best instructors you can find with tons of experience and top notch instruction. This is the place to be for BJJ!

My daughter is in the Junior Sharks program and I am in the adult classes at McHugh Jiu-Jitsu Collingswood. We are both developing self defense confidence and have both competed in tournaments in the past year. This academy has filled a space in my life I didn't realize existed, and I can't imagine not doing it. Coach James has built a strong community here from all walks of life, and we have either others' backs on and off the mat in various ways. I've lived in Collingswood 20 years but I think this is the best thing we have ever had here - it's a local treasure. We sometimes say the white belt is the hardest belt to achieve because it requires you getting off the couch and showing up to an introductory class. There's no pressure or hard sell with Coach James and he will let you try a free class to see if it's the right fit for you or your kid. McHugh also does a camp, birthday parties, dodgeball nights and in-house tournaments for the kids. Big shout out to the coaches who train and roll with us - James, Jon, Christian, Kevin, Kelly and Prof. Battle. They each have a different teaching style and each have years of wisdom and skill to share with us. And the school is very clean with mats cleaned after every class. You won't get this at every school. Also, a few notes on why we train jiu-jitsu in case it helps you choose a martial art: 1. Statistically much lower risk of injuries such as concussions than the striking arts 2. Instead of practicing choreographed moves and pulling punches and kicks in the air or wearing protective gear, we end every class with real grappling. You will learn how to safely apply what you're learning every time you roll and you'll even get to roll with higher belts time to time. 3. There are a lot of defense situations where strikes may not work - subduing someone under the influence or mentally ill where you don't want to injure them for instance. Also, most fights end up on the ground and jiu-jitsu picks up where those leave off. 4. It's a great workout! I've lost 20 pounds the past year and there's a lot of stories of people having much bigger body transformations in our school. I hope my review encourages you to try it out and I'll see you on the mat one day!

Mchugh Jiu Jitsu’s second location! Brand new space and super clean; The staff team there is extremely professional. World class all around 👍🏻 Been training for 5 years, there are no other places in the area like the academies of Mchugh Jiu Jitsu. It’s a no brainer if you are in the area and looking for a place to train.

I had such a great experience with McHugh Jiu Jitsu during the Women’s Self Defense series. I was nervous to start my first class, but the coaches were so welcoming and helpful from the moment I walked in. I felt empowered after each class and eager to learn more. My husband also attends classes at McHugh each week and absolutely loves the classes as well as the community. I am looking forward to coming back and would highly recommend this gym!
