This academy is amazing, great folks, great team mates and lovely atmosphere. Teaching, class format and drilling was top notch. I was lucky to be able to drop in for train and it is truly an honor to train there. If you’re looking to get into BJJ this is the place to be…
Such a great group of people, teaching really cool stuff. I enjoyed my time there very much. Thank you everyone for being so accommodating and awesome!
Probably one of the best decisions of my later in life choices. From Day 1 it was like a Family. Everyone was and is so respectful, Instructors are top notch and willing to teach the way Jiu-jitsu should be taught. Step by step day by day. I could not imagine myself training anywhere else. Such an amazing group to be a part of.
This academy is one of the best if not the best in the city. If you’re looking to get in shape or get better on the mats this place is perfect for anyone because of the instructors and the students. They have an early morning class at 545am that I attended and it was perfect to get my day started. The school has a wide range of students from young kids to old school people like me. Professor Darrell and professor Paul are retired and they love teaching jujitsu and it shows with their instructions. When you roll with both professors you will know they’ve been on the mats for decades. I guarantee when you try this academy you will have a great experience and you will get addicted.
I love this place it’s a great and friendly environment. The students and staff don’t hesitate to reach out and help you. I have been training here for about 3-4 months now. The best part for me is everyone is here to improve themselves not their ego.
I have had the pleasure of being a student here for going on 8+ years. The name sais it ALL. There is lots of support from the students and teachers, very welcoming of new kids and adults as well as eliminating any un classy guests hence the No drop in rule which protects our environment and the culture. Lots of morning/evening and weekend training opportunities!
Amazing instructors, atmosphere and team. I’ve been attending Like Minded Jiu Jitsu for an over a year and I can’t imagine myself going anywhere else.
Glad we found this school after losing thousands of dollars at a Taekwondo school. We are very happy with the progress our child has made at this school thanks to the outstanding instructors.
I'm a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and I've been training for about 10 years. I've trained all over the world, from China to Colorado. I'm so grateful to have found this community of practitioners for the next chapter of my life here in the Phoenix-Tempe area. I started training here regularly in October 2021 and have since competed four times in the Arizona area under the Like-Minded affiliation. What I like about this place in particular is that it has a variety of different coaching styles. Every night of the week, a different coach teaches class: the evening classes are taught by two black belt professors and two purple belts. I also train in the mornings under a brown belt. Each coach has their own style of teaching and training. So you really get a variety of different techniques and instruction as well. There is also a lot of variety in the skills and body types of the members here. The other thing that is great about this place is that, because it is a relatively smaller and tight-knit community, the coaches really get to know you and know your game, so they will help you with your strengths and weaknesses, as well as know your injuries and know when you're competing. At other gyms I've trained at, I was sometimes just another face in the crowd, but here they really try to get to know you as a person. It does take some time to get to know people, so be patient. But once you make an effort to show up, show respect, and get to know people, the community will pay you back tenfold. As far as training BJJ in general, the sport definitely saved my life. I started training in 2011 and it has completely opened up my world in terms of building confidence, discipline, fitness, and community. Everywhere I go, training BJJ is the first thing I do. BJJ is one of the most important parts of my life. It has helped me tremendously with mental and physical health. So if you are thinking about starting this as a regular practice, I highly recommend it! In terms of this gym in particular, be prepared to show respect to the instructors and their rules for the gym (which are posted on the wall to the left when you walk in). If you're not sure about something, ask and don't assume. And most importantly, be prepared to show up consistently and on time, ready to focus and work. It's well worth it. Make sure you stay on top of daily communication about the schedule with your coaches. Ask them to add you to the group chat so you don't miss important announcements. Also, the monthly rate is very affordable and much more affordable than other gyms in the area. NOTE: I no longer train at this academy. Review written in April 2022 and edited in September 2022.
This is a great gym. Everyone treats each other with respect and injury prevention is given high importance. Professor Taylor is knowledgeable and a great teacher. It’s a fun and relaxed environment. Would highly recommend!
My second family. Very knowledgeable coaches and great teammates to train and learn with.
Very late review but attended a couple classes here for the first time last year. This place sets such a high standard of being welcoming, friendly, and knowledgeable, every other place I've been to doesn't compare. I'd love to come back if/when I'm in the area
Excellent instruction for kids and adults alike. Great community atmosphere.
I adore this place. It is a escape from all the craziness outside those doors, I never knew that learning Jiu-Jitsu would do that. The instructors are beyond amazing and they truly care about you. They want you to get better in skill and of course with your body. You don't progress because you spent the most money or you've been there the longest; but because you are excelling and if you really care about the art. I highly recommend this place for anyone who is nervous or feeling self conscience about joining a form of martial art!
Clean gym, nice aesthetics. Very reasonable tuition fees. No monthly contract. Most students are new, friendly and positive. The Professor there goes out of his way to prevent injuries and weed out aggressive egotistical people. If you are on the South Side and have always been interested in trying Jiu Jitsu. This is a great place for you.
Absolutely a fantastic place to train. The facility is small, but unique in the sense that Taylor incorporates not only the foundations of BJJ, but also mixes in kettle bell training, ropes, agility skills, and more! Everyone there is there to learn and not trying to outdo the next player. FACILITY: small but extremely well equipped , mats and good for throwing (but I wish there were the blue ones because black messes up my white GI) , and the cleanliness is excellent! STUDENTS: most are beginners from white belts to beginning blue belts , all students are like-minded individuals who understand that this is a learning and self-building process. TEACHER: very knowledgeable in both the BJJ art and history itself as well as real life applications of what this type of training can do for you , very patient and willing to drill drill drill a move until it is done right , supportive in the sense that EVERYONE there is treated with respect and welcomed like family. The place should have been named "LIKE FAMILY Jiu Jitsu"
A great place to train!!! Friendly, safe, and professional environment. True martial artists that put the group before the individual. Like minded people working towards the common goals of self-improvement, self-defense, competition and physical fitness. Professor Taylor has a wealth of knowledge and experience that he consistently passes on to his students, creating an ever-evolving style.
My 3 boys have been coming here for about 2 weeks and absolutely look forward to class and count down the days. Professor Taylor is great with my boys.
I had been interested in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for years, but hadn’t found the right place for me to start until recently. The things that initially attracted me to Like Minded Jiu-Jitsu are what keep me coming back day after day. Darrell Taylor is incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, motivating, and patient. The students are humble, friendly, hardworking, “like minded” people. Both the atmosphere and the facility are top-notch and will help you have fun, reach your goals, and meet some great people.
I really appreciate the warm & welcoming atmosphere that's been cultivated here. I always feel supported & challenged by Professor Taylor & the other students. I especially love showing up for class, experiencing the balance of a deep respect for the practice, combined with a light-heartedness & vitality that make it easy to enjoy myself while developing & refining my skills.
