I dropped into this academy today while visiting from Omaha. The professor was very welcoming as well as the rest of the class. There was awesome instruction; very detailed and concise. I enjoyed today's session and will be back for the next two days while I'm in town. Thank you JG Academy for having me today! Oss!!!
Dallas TX purple belt here. JG was an awesome place for a drop-in for my business trip. High skill levels in the gym but also very welcoming. Definitely coming back on my next visit to Palo Alto.
The coaches are amazing!!! They know so much and make things easy to understand. Even if something's new to me, they explain it in a way that makes sense. Plus, they're really friendly and always ready to help. The people I train with are super nice too. Everyone is helpful and they make training fun. We all work together, and they've taught me a lot. It's not just about learning from the coaches - the other students have given me great tips and advice. What's really cool is how everyone is welcome here, no matter how much Jiu-Jitsu you know. Whether you're just starting out or you've been doing it for a while, you'll fit right in. I'm so glad I found JG Academy.
Awesome culture, Sang is extremely nice and helpful. I would highly recommend if you're interesting in learning BJJ!
JG Academy is awesome! The instructor Sang is super welcoming and approachable and really knows his stuff. I felt really welcome from the first day and I always feel comfortable to ask any questions. Sang really explains WHY we do certain techniques and the motivation behind it, which really helps you understand the nuances of each position rather than just drilling for the sake of it. Great training partners who will push you and give you a hard roll, but are never out to hurt you. The higher belts also know how to take it easy on lower belts when they need to. Highly recommend
Sang (the instructor who teaches beginners’ class) is awesome! I highly recommend learning from him.
I dropped in three classes while I was visiting Palo Alto. It’s a welcoming environment, coaches are very knowledgeable, training partners are friendly and will give you good rolling rounds.I highly recommend this academy for everyone not matter your level. I’ll definitely attend again in my next trips.
Great place for starters, competitors and kids. I’ve been training here for 4 years now and the gym has met all my expectations.
I never do reviews, but I have to make an exception here. JG is the best gym I've ever been. There are fundamentals, advanced and comp. training classes, which supplement each other. The professors are super nice to everyone and they are also very experienced as most of them are actively competing (just to mention, professor Javier Gomez recently got the 1st place in 2022 IBJJF No-Gi World Championship). There are also great and supportive training partners as many of the folks are actively competing as well. And last but not least, JG is not a "I-train-and-I-leave" gym. There an amazing and friendly environment as most of the people there are friends and they spend time together off the mats.
I came in for a drop in class while I was down in Los Altos for a work event. They were all super cool and welcoming. Really nice large mat as well. Would recommend to anyone and I will go back.
Very friendly atmosphere. The instructors are all very approachable and the facilities are clean and comprehensive. Coming to a competition class at this gym is my favorite part of the week!
JC and the whole crew at JG are extremely welcoming and kind. Tough rolls, super nice gym and great attitude. Train here without hesitation.
Great place to train! Everyone is very skilled, respectful and fun!
I have been here for a while now. amazing place to learn Jiujitsu at any level and also competitive, great for all ages.
After moving from the valley I needed to find a new place to train. I took a trial class here and instantly felt welcomed. The vibes, instructors, and training partners here are great. I highly recommend this gym.
Awesome gym with lots of great instructors. I love that they have early morning classes so I can get in training before work. The AM instructor, JC, does an amazing job helping you progress whatever stage you are at in your BJJ journey and the fellow students are helpful and welcoming. Thank you all!
I’ve been training here for about six months, and I love the community I have found here. Although it’s now out of the way for me due to new work location, I still refuse to leave this gym. Everyone is very respectful and I feel completely safe here, which is important to mention.
Great BJJ gym. Good coaches. Cool facilities. Each lesson a set of techniques is presented, followed by positional sparring and live rolls. Love it.
Great gym, great coaches and class structure. Let’s get some more nogi going!
I've been attending JG Academy in Los Altos for about five months now. It's a great school. I tried a couple of other BJJ schools in the area before settling on JG. Ultimately, it was a gut decision based on Omar's high quality instruction, and great attitude, during my trial classes. (Also, it was the only school to allow multiple trial classes.) He's great at taking it slow and pointing out the important details. This gut decision definitely panned out. I've mostly attended fundamentals classes which Omar teaches. The fundamentals repeatedly cycle through 10 weeks of material. It provides you a good opportunity for repetition of your fundamental techniques. Classes are structured in the typical way. Over the course of an hour you warm up, learn a technique, and then roll (spar) for maybe 20 minutes. Overall, the instruction is good, and generally everyone is welcoming. I highly recommend this school.
I’ve been training here for a couple weeks. People here are nice and friendly. The movement and techniques from instructors are practical and useful. They offer advanced and fundamental classes which is pretty flexible.
This gym is very beginner friendly! The coaches are very patient and knowledgeable.
Great place to train - caters to a wide range of skill levels and is a welcoming community!
The reasons why I keep coming back are because of the great instructors with the patience of saints and welcoming and fun training partners. This gym is out of the way for me, a 40 minute drive, but absolutely worth it. It's a comfortable training environment and I recommend it.
The JG Academy Los Altos is an amazing gym to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the Bay Area. Top tier instructors and training partners. They offer morning, noon, afternoon, and weekend classes. If you are on the fence, definitely come by and drop in for a class!
Awesome school. All the coaches have done a great job at creating an awesome work environment at all level. Special mention for Omar who teaches the fundamental class. He has an awesome energy that he communicates really well to his students, regardless of their level in bjj.
They have created such an amazing culture here. Everyone is extremely kind and supportive. How the instructors manage to make everyone feel included and welcomed during even the fullest of classes is truly impressive. I am new to Jiu Jitsu and have enjoyed instructor Omar’s fundamentals classes. He is very patient but will also challenge and push you out of your comfort zone. I would highly recommend to people of all experience levels!
Amazing place to train jiu-jitsu. Instructor Omar does an incredible job encouraging questions and ensuring that each and every one of us understands each movement and technique. Highly recommend!!
Been coming here for more than a year, love the vibe, instructors are fantastic and detailed. Very welcoming and friendly. If you are interested in learning BJJ definitely come here!
Great instructors and a safe, welcoming environment. It doesn't matter if you are training for competition or just want fun activity to stay in shape; you will find many high quality training partners here. Also has excellent kids program and instructors.
Whether you're looking to try Jiu-Jitsu or continue your training coming from another gym, JG Academy is the place for you! Excellent training for both fundamentals and advanced, this gym is sure to provide a fun physical and mental workout.
I am a woman with no martial arts background and have wanted to try BJJ for a while. I've attended JG Academy Los Altos for two months now and am beyond happy with my time training there so far. The instructors and community are knowledgable and welcoming. Attending BJJ classes here is always the highlight of my week!
Excellent gym! Great instructors and training partners with a supportive atmosphere. Definitely worth checking it out.
I recently moved to the Bay Area and was looking for a BJJ gym to continue my training. The most important things to me were quality of instruction and sense of community at the gym, and I can comfortably say that JG Academy is exceeding my expectations in both of those categories. All the instructors are clearly very knowledgeable and skilled BJJ practitioners, everyone at the gym is respectful and friendly, and there are good training opportunities for all skill levels. The gym is also really clean and has nice facilities. I would highly recommend JG Academy in Los Altos for anyone looking to get into BJJ or continue their training in the Bay!
Very amazing school, full of different body types and skill ranges. The instructors are some my favorite people, with a vast amount of jiujitsu knowledge. I highly recommend dropping in for a class.
Amazing instructors that break down techniques step by step, and who are very eager to answer questions from students. Friendly atmosphere, reasonable pricing and schedule, and a great environment for beginners. I feel lucky to be here!
Great place for jiu jitsu in the bay! I've been going regularly for just about a year now, and it's improved my life in just about every way possible. Professors are technical and teach with a lot of attention and patience. Fun and respectful atmosphere overall. My only request would be a little more focus on no-gi. :)
Friendly crowd that comes for open mat during first Sunday of the month. Great training and helpful folks showing techniques, highly recommend this gym!
Very welcoming instructors and higher level belts. Lots of hard gi training and a well kept, clean facility. A great place to drop in if you're visiting the area!
Highly recommend this place for all levels - beginner through national champion. Positive, challenging, and always learning. No egos, just professional, motivated leaders.
Great gym! The people are really friendly and the instructors are super helpful and clear. If i could give 10 stars i’d give 10 stars but i’m only limited to 5.
Great place to train with good people, jiu jitsu, and community. Very clean and plenty of mat space.
100% the best place to train in the area. They have the best instructors around, whether you are just starting or advance, this is the spot to go to!
As someone who has trained for many years, there's a lot of things I look for in a BJJ school that would make me feel comfortable recommending a place, especially as a school owner myself, I need to know if a place is great. Even with reputations, if I haven't been, then I won't just tell people to go. I can honestly say that JG Academy here in Los Altos is one of those schools that aren't just stellar but a flagship where others can come to learn a lot from. Including someone like me. The staff is so friendly, the students are all walks of life and as you go into the upper belts the skill level is high. The facility itself is bright and clean. Kids program is absolutely amazing with top notch instruction. For anyone looking to start BJJ or continue in their journey, you have to stop by and give it a try. It's a world class school and there's a reason a number of practitioners from other schools frequent this place as a supplement to their own training.
Great place to get a good workout! Coaches are very knowledgeable and know how to demonstrate technique very well.
While traveling on a work trip I wanted to get some training in. I was told about Lanistae Academy from a Black belt at my home gym. The first thing I noticed was they had a parking lot, huge plus. Walking in it’s nice and open, and very clean. Everyone from the instructors to students have been awesome and very welcoming. The instruction is great and the environment as a whole has felt like home. If I’m ever back in the area I’ll definitely continue to train here. If you’re on the fence, don’t be, just give it a shot. They’ll make you feel welcome and you’ll realize you should’ve come sooner!
This place is awesome! The black belts and higher belts are very knowledgeable, and the comraderie is special. If you are interested in juijitsu, give this place a try!
Can’t say enough about this place. Jerome and Javier opened their gym to me and made me feel at home while I was in town for business. Lanistae has great, high level coaching and some very tough dudes ( and gals ). This is the perfect place for beginners and competitors alike.
True professionals operating a beautiful space.
Great instruction and friendly environment!
High level practitioners that are dedicated to teaching the art! Friendly community. Shout outs to Milton and Bruce!
Excellent school. I have been there for 18 months now, and I love it. Milton has a gift at teaching BJJ. His instructions are very clear, and he can spot and point out little details that really make a difference
This place checks all of the boxes. You’re being trained by world champion competitors who are also world class instructors. The training environment is clean and safe. Most importantly, the team and the culture they set up is welcoming and consists of the friendliest bunch of people you’ll ever meet. From a guy starting starting this journey in his late thirties, joining is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Signed up my 6yo here here and totally fell in love. Amazing vibe, flexible (and thoughtful!) scheduling of classes, and Alex (owner) is amazing. She's super helpful and down to earth. We had tried a different martial art at another place for almost a year, and my kid just didn't "connect" with it, even though it was a good place. At Lanistae, it was right away. Then, after a few months of just watching kiddo practice, I joined myself! I absolutely love it for the exercise as well as the community. Highly recommend to those young and not-as-young-as-they-used-to-be!
Been training here since I went to Cali. 6 months already. Milton cares about all his students driving hours in his time off just to watch his students compete. I highly recommend joining or dropping in if you are in the area for a short while!
Jiu Jitsu is not something I never imagined I would be doing in my 30's but I am so happy my boyfriend convinced me to take a class with Milton! Jiu jitsu has strengthened my mental toughness, confidence, and physical abilities for the better. You are part of a family at Lanistae Academy and learning from a multi title world champion. Don't waste your time going anywhere else!
My son is 9 year old and he only attended free trail for a day. After observing Alex, Olivia, Douglas, and the rest of staff's EXCELLENT attitude and patient with other kids I immediately register him as a full time student, he has been going for the past three days and he is Absolutely LOVING IT!!!!!!!!!
I have been training at Lanistae for about a year and a half and am so happy I made this my academy of choice when moving to the Bay area. What brought me through the door was Milton Bastos' (head instructor) accolades, such as being a multiple time world champion, and personal referrals. Here are a few highlights: 1) Full schedule of classes throughout the day for beginners, intermediate, and advanced (gi and no-gi). Milton adjusts the technique to accommodate the students in attendance. 2) Beautiful facility all around: clean and open with plenty of mat space and a lounge area 3) High level training partners: whether competitors or hobbyists, the talent here is top notch. Also, you will often find multiple black belts on the mats--all who bring various skills and feedback during training. 4) Friendly and safe environment: Many families and children, numerous women of all levels, and people of various ages train here. If you're new to jiu-jitsu, this is a great indication of a safe and friendly place to train. Milton and the other coaches make a conscious effort to welcome people and ensure this is a safe environment to train. 5) Organized and well-run: Classes start on time, and there is clear and advanced communication on holiday hours or special events. The academy is very responsive with any inquiries. 6) Personalized coaching: This is very personal to me. Milton is an amazing coach--one of the best, in fact. He is always supportive and provides invaluable advice in my training and objectives. I have seen a huge change in my progression as well as how I approach training and competition. He is genuinely invested in his students and will offer his guidance as people work towards their own personal growth in jiu-jitsu. There are other coaches at Lanistae, in particular the kids' coaches. They spend a great deal of time teaching the kids as well as coaching them at various tournaments on the weekends. You will not find a better place to train in the Bay Area--guaranteed.
Great place for a drop-in while visiting from out of town (bring your white gi)
I've done BJJ at both the UFC Gym in Sunnyvale and Lanistae Academy and the program at Lanistae is far superior in terms of personal attention and quality sparring partners. As a woman doing jiu jitsu sometimes you are limited to perhaps one other woman in the class and then all male sparring partners, I have found that is not the case here and am able to have multiple rounds with different female partners, which is great, since in competition those will be the body types I will be up against. They also have a children's program (7 to 12ish, I believe) and my son (4yo) is enrolled in their Itty Bitty Jiu Jitsu class. I recently started their kickboxing program and really enjoy both their coaches, whose Muah Thai styles vary from Dutch to traditional. Between the two classes (and a little meal prep), I've managed to lose 20 pounds in six months and am currently in the best shape of my life. Their lounge space is awesome and super comfortable. Everything is really clean looking and there is no gym sock funk smell like other gyms tend to get. One warning though, white gis only on the mats.
Great place to train with very knowledgeable indtructors. The mats are white so you know the place has to stay clean!
Great academy - good vibes - friendly to beginners.
Milton Bastos BJJ is a wonderful place to train. Milton is kind and keeps the classes fun. While Milton's competition accolades speak for themselves, what really sets this academy apart is Milton's coaching ability. You'd be hard pressed to find someone with Milton's professional and wrestling coaching background. Personally, I don't think there's a better place to train in the Bay Area.
Best place you could ever imagine, great atmosphere and instructors for both kids and adults. We came to the Bay Area with three kids (who did not speak english at the time), here we felt at home from the start!
My son takes lessons here and loves it. The price is very reasonable for the physical and emotional benefit.
Awesomely friendly gym for beginners and addicts alike! Milton is a super technical and supportive coach, and makes the best bad jokes. So many super talented women and fighters of all sizes, it always feels like home :)
Milton is one of the best instructors I've ever had, and his classes are a perfect mix of fun, laughter and highly technical and relevant instruction. There are many levels of belts that train there, and each of them brings a cool attitude to the mats. There are black belts, and then there are black belts like Milton. You can tell that Milton understands Jiu-Jitsu on a level that many will never reach, but he has a way of teaching that doesn't feel arrogant or cocky, but it is inviting and makes you wanting to come back for more.
I've been training BJJ for years, the last two of which have been with Milton, and can unequivocally say that Milton's instruction and technique is fantastic. Milton is careful to draw attention to important details of the movements being taught, and then ensures that the entire class is correctly drilling the move in a helpful and friendly manner. Moreover, this quality of instruction is rivaled only by the community and camaraderie of Milton's students, and class is frequently filled with a jovial atmosphere. I couldn't imagine training anywhere else.
I trained at Milton Bastos BJJ just under a year and enjoyed my time, the people, and high level instruction. Milton, his black belts, and senior students always gave great instruction and provided an academy that was fun and funny at times. If you are in the SF/Bay area check them out, you won't be disappointed.
The awesome, action and personality-packed, kid-friendly, Silicon Valley version of Batman's training grounds - by far the best BJJ place in the Bay Area (and trust me, I checked) - lovely people.
Perfect professional and family, Vibe! Perfect JiuJitsu Ever❣️❣️❣️
There's a balance between the seriousness of martial arts and being able to relax and enjoy it. Milton strikes that perfect balance with very high quality training that is also very fun. I wish I could go more often.
Whether you are an advanced belt with years of experience or are simply looking for a great new way to get in shape, Milton makes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu accessible yet challenging for every level. Milton obsesses about proper technique but creates a collegial, supportive environment where you have fun as you learn incredibly useful moves.
Best place to train in the Bay Area, no doubt. Milton is super technical and the attention to detail he gives could not be better. Great atmosphere in the academy everyone is really friendly and welcoming. I can't imagine training anywhere else.
Positive environment that is fun and entertaining. Milton Bastos teaching is very knowledgeable in self defense great for beginners and advanced bjj practitioners. Very clean!
Milton is a top level instructor, coach, and competitor. His attention to detail and deep technical understanding combined with his great personality make him among the best in the area.
Absolutely love this place !!!! Milton Bastos BJJ spotless and friendly environment located in the Mountain View with a top notch instructor. Milton is an excellent instructor brings a wealth of knowledge and a fun person to be around. Academy offers flexible schedule, that allows you to train in the morning or at night 6 times a week. I highly recommend this place for children and adults of all levels.
Milton Bastos' new academy in Mountain View is top notch. Milton is sincere about helping all of his students improve on a daily basis and he has a keen ability for tailoring his instruction to maximize his students' potential. Milton is professional, approachable, and he has a great sense of humor which brings a sense of fun to the hard working atmosphere. Also, Milton is not only a tremendous teacher, he is also an active competitor at the highest level! With Milton Bastos BJJ, the Sunnyvale/Mountain View/Los Altos just got a whole lot more awesome.
Milton's putting together a great new BJJ gym here in MTV. His instruction is very detailed, and he shows a good mixture of techniques that will interest traditional self defense-oriented folks as well as students of the modern sport game. The students are all very friendly, and the facilities are brand new. I'd highly recommend it.
I can see why people leave good reviews for this place. The instructors are skillful and good. However, my experience was very disappointing. I attended the test class and was rushed to sign the membership. However, I realize that it is not something I can keep doing, so I asked to withdraw my membership the second day. But I was told I cannot get my refund. After about a month trying to contact them for refund, I finally had to go to the place again. They basically wanted me to go to the class instead of refunding me anything. It is clear that I cannot get my refund back, so I had to attend the class instead. Then, after attending one week of class, they said my membership expired and that I need to pay to continue. I paid a whole month (a little less that $300) for less than 5 classes! I would recommend people to think twice before you subscribe, cause once you do, there is no money back.
