We have enjoyed every single class since joining IPE! The Senseis are not only experienced and knowledgeable, but also incredibly attentive and caring toward every student. Whether you are a child or an adult, competitive or recreational, this is the perfect place to grow as a martial artist while gaining life skills that last a lifetime. The dojo is filled with discipline and respect—on and off the mat—which you notice from the very first moment you walk in. And of course, the level of the Senseis’ Judo and BJJ expertise is truly world-class!
I have trained jiu jitsu for 14 years and judo for 3. Ipê is a phenomenal dojo to develop your skills. First, the Senseis care about teaching students. Both have many years of teaching here and in Brasil and it shows in the level of detailed instruction within their pedagogy (Sensei José is a coral belt in judo and black belt in jiu jitsu; and Sensei Ana is a black belt in judo and jiu jitsu). I’ve trained all over the world and Ipê is unique in the amount of feedback and attention you get from the senseis and senior students. There’s a painstaking amount of attention to detail and repetition, which helps you develop a deeper understanding of techniques. Simply put, training here will make you a technical maestro. Second, this dojo emphasizes humility, respect, camaraderie. There’s no ego on the mats and it’s apparent from day one that safety is a top dojo priority. This makes Ipê a great place for beginners and more seasoned grapplers to train. Nothing is worse than getting injured during training because someone wasn’t being careful. Ipê has a culture where students are encouraged to look out for each other’s safety. It’s no surprise that this dojo has a ton of members who have families, demanding jobs, and other commitments that require them to be healthy and injury-free. Third, this dojo is unique because it’s the only one that I know of where you can become a DOUBLE black belt in jiu jitsu and judo. Training here is evenly split between standing and ground techniques (the former which is often overlooked in jiu jitsu schools). This makes students here very balanced and technically sound grapplers. There is also a real sense of community and sharing here. For instance it’s very common for upper ranking belts to seek out and help newer, less experienced students. This school does not have a meathead vibe at all; if anything it feels like a grappling version of Miyagi Dojo (if you’ve see Cobra Kai on Netflix then you’ll get this comparison). Fourth, this is a family friendly dojo. The kids program is designed to teach kids discipline, respect, and humility. Ive had my child try out other schools and the amount of hands on attention and the skills-based games that they employ here are truly ahead of the curve. This is also an environment in which I feel comfortable bringing my children to. . All of the members here are respectful, friendly, and model the kind of actions we hope our child will emulate. This is not the case at all gyms. I could go on an on, but I’ll just say that this dojo is very special. It is a cathartic space where I go and train hard, meditate, and challenge myself. Give it a try. I bet you will get hooked!
Ipe Dojo isn't a martial arts gym; it's a family. I can name countless examples of husbands and wives, parents and children, coming here to train together. We have refugees and new immigrants with no language skills or connections who come here and instantly have a family, a purpose, and people who will move mountains to help them in any way possible. Never before have I been part of such a dedicated, mutually supportive community as I have with my Sensei and training partners. We train the fighting arts here, but there is no ego. Our only concern is lifting each other up and developing each other into whole, empowered human beings. Cultures like this don't happen by accident. They come from the top. Sensei Jose and Sensei Ana give every part of themselves to their students. I've seen Sensei Jose writing out detailed training, nutrition, and even therapy programs for each of his competitive athletes for a whole year in advance. Sensei Ana travels all around the world to support our athletes at international tournaments. The level of humility and dedication demonstrated by these two is awe inspiring, and training under them has been one of the great privileges of my life. For myself, my training partners and my Sensei, martial arts is more than a sport or a hobby; it's a way of life. I've been incredibly fortunate to have trained with the very best here, and I hope you choose to as well.
Ipe Dojo's Judo & BJJ classes are top notch. The new academy is amazingly clean and fully equipped. I've trained martial arts around the world and really have to say the Staff and team at IPE are doing something special.
An Unmatched Martial Arts Experience at Ipê Dojo! As a mom of two young kids, learning Jiu Jitsu and Judo has been absolutely amazing. Despite the demands of parenthood, the support and flexibility offered at Ipê have allowed me to pursue my passion for martial arts. I have been a part of Ipê since 2018, back when it was called Higashi Canada, and it has been an incredible journey. I initially joined for Jiu Jitsu classes with Sensei Jose, and soon after, I found myself immersed in the world of judo as well. The learning experience and the sense of community at Ipê are simply unparalleled. What sets this club apart is the warm and welcoming environment. There's no bro culture here, which makes me (who is clearly not a bro) feel right at home. The camaraderie among the members is remarkable, and the friendships I've made are invaluable. The coaches: Sensei Ana's presence is unforgettable; she is both tough and hilarious! Her dedication to our training and her ability to lighten the mood with her humour make every class enjoyable and motivating. Sensei Jose is truly world-renowned, yet incredibly humble about his high rank. His expertise in Jiu Jitsu is awe-inspiring, and his passion for teaching is evident in every session. They approach each student with patience and individualized attention. Together, Senseis Ana and Jose make an unbeatable team, planning out the curriculum thoughtfully, tailored to the needs of their students. The teacher in me is always impressed and reassured they they have an in-depth year-long curriculum plan. Sensei David's expertise in the no-gi class is fantastic, and his wealth of knowledge as well as unique approach to explaining things enhances every training session. Judo and Jiu Jitsu have pushed me to my limits, and I adore the constant challenge of bettering myself. You will too! Now, the new convenient location only adds to the excitement of the journey ahead. I can't recommend Higashi Canada enough for anyone seeking an amazing martial arts experience. It's not just a club; it's a community that embraces learning, growth, and having a whole lot of fun! Thank you, Senseis Ana and Jose, for creating such an exceptional place to train and grow! If you read this whole review, I’m super impressed. You definitely have the perseverance it takes to learn Judo and Jiu Jitsu. What are you waiting for? ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
