My 6 year old son has been training at Gulf Coast Jiu Jitsu for nearly two years now, and I can’t say enough good things about the impact that it’s had on him. Beyond learning technique and discipline, one of the biggest changes we’ve seen is in his emotional intelligence. Jiu jitsu has given him an outlet to work through challenges, build confidence, and stay grounded in tough situations.
Professor Corey has been an incredible mentor and coach, not just on the mat, but in how he invests in the kids’ personal growth. His approach is encouraging, structured, and always rooted in respect.
We’re truly grateful for this academy and the community that it brings. I would recommend Gulf Coast Jiu Jitsu to anyone looking for a place to train.
This place is truly a diamond in the rough — and the experience I had here was the last thing I expected to find in Mobile, Alabama.
I live in Dallas and spent a week training at this academy. I left with a completely transformed perspective on Jiu-Jitsu. I’ve been training and competing for four years, and Professor Corey showed me a side of the art that I had either never seen before or had lost sight of. I had become so focused on competing and chasing medals that I forgot what it truly means to be a martial artist.
During my time here, I was introduced to the self-defense side of Jiu-Jitsu — something that was incredibly empowering for me as a smaller female. I no longer feel intimidated when training with much larger and stronger men. What’s more, everything I learned had direct application to the sport side of Jiu-Jitsu as well. I returned to my home academy more technical and with a renewed love and appreciation for the art.
Professor Corey also introduced me to the concept of “invisible Jiu-Jitsu.” I had heard of it before, but this was the first time I was able to feel and truly experience it. It’s something I now plan to continue exploring in my training, knowing I’ve only just scratched the surface.
Professor Corey is the definition of a true leader and black belt. He has inspired me to grow not just as a competitor, but as a martial artist and leader. It’s clear that he continually invests in himself as a teacher and mentor. I witnessed how he was able to deeply connect with everyone — from a 4-year-old child, to a woman learning self-defense, to someone like me with years of competitive experience.
I was especially blown away by how he works with the children. His kids’ classes are unlike anything I’ve seen — the way he engages and teaches is something I thought only existed in movies. To see it in real life was nothing short of magical.
There is something for everyone here, no matter your goals or experience level. When I first started Jiu-Jitsu, I heard the phrase “Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone.” At this academy, I truly saw that in action. The community is warm, inclusive, and inspiring. I wholeheartedly recommend this place to anyone, whether you’re just starting or have been training for years.
This is a wonderful academy. Corey is an amazing instructor and gives so much of himself to his students as well as the community. I have been training here for over 8 years now and it has been a pleasure to watch our academy and community grow. I am actually a psychiatric nurse practitioner who primarily works with children. Jiu Jitsu is a great martial art for children who struggle with adhd. There has been a study recently that shows a significant reduction in adhd symptoms in young boys who take Jiu Jitsu classes regularly. They learn discipline and self control in a very social and friendly environment. Young girls who know how to defend themselves are, I would imagine, less likely to become victims. With that being said, we also have the SAFE class on Mondays that focuses on self defense . You do not need to wear a gi for this class, just show up ready to learn how to defend yourself in basically any situation you could think of. This class can be extremely beneficial to women as well as men. People can learn to defend themselves and improve their confidence in themselves if they are ever placed in a situation that may be dangerous for them to navigate through as well. I believe this academy is a great place for people of all ages, no matter their physical abilities, to attend.
I can’t recommend this academy enough! From the very first class, I felt welcomed, challenged, and inspired to grow—not only as a martial artist but as a person.
Professor Corey Richardson is an exceptional instructor. As a black belt in Jiu Jitsu, he brings a wealth of knowledge, discipline, and passion to every class he teaches—whether it’s adult Jiu Jitsu, kids Jiu Jitsu, or adult kickboxing. He creates an atmosphere that encourages learning, respect, and personal growth. Watching him work with the kids is especially impressive—he doesn’t just teach technique, he teaches discipline, focus, and confidence.
My husband Peter has been training here for three years in Jiu Jitsu and two years in kickboxing. He was the one who encouraged me to try kickboxing ten months ago, and I’m so glad I listened. Every class pushes me to be better. I’ve gained real self-defense skills, boosted my confidence, and discovered a deep sense of accomplishment that I carry with me every day.
Jaylen and Peter assist with the adult kickboxing class and are fantastic assistant instructors in their own right. They bring energy, clarity, and constant encouragement that makes training both fun and effective.
Whether you’re a beginner or experienced, this is a place where you’ll be supported, challenged, and empowered. The community is strong, welcoming, and full of people who want to see each other succeed.
If you’re even considering starting martial arts or looking for a great place to train—this is it.
ABSOLUTE GEM OF AN ACADEMY!
I travel over 4 hours each way just to drop in with these guys. If you live in the Mobile, AL area, THIS IS THE SCHOOL YOU'RE LOOKING FOR. Rickson Gracie Jiu Jitsu. ACTUAL self defense. This is not a big sport school, this is where you go to learn true "invisible Jiu jitsu", the super power that put Jiu-Jitsu on the map. Go feel it for yourself. Corey, the head instructor, is an awesome guy and a great teacher and he absolutely knows his stuff. I feel lucky to have met him and found this place. The other students are also a credit to the school; kind, friendly, welcoming and helpful.
I love visiting here and always take so much away from each visit. My only complaint is that it needs to be closer to my house! HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Go check these guys out!
My son has been at Gulf Coast Jiu Jitsu for 11 months and we nothing but good things to say about this Dojo. Mr. Corey, as well as Mr. Casey and Mr. Whitney, have helped our son develop into a better kid. Not only did he learn some jiu jitsu/self defense, but he's also learned discipline and respect. A firm handshake while looking at the other person in the eyes and every response being said with a yes sir/no sir are just a few of the things of value that will be learned here. As parents we all try to teach these things at home, but I also feel having someone outside the home that demands these things help shows a kid that it applies everywhere.
My 5 year old went for a trial class and we all instantly LOVED IT. My son left and immediately said “I want to do that again!!”
The way the instructors speak to the kids and each other is amazing, full of kindness and respect. To have a martial arts class practicing the same moral behaviors for listening, communicating, being kind and respecting others, that we use at home, is so refreshing! What a no brainer to become members at Gulf Coast Jiu Jitsu! At some point we may just have the whole family be apart!
I am so thankful that we found THIS particular Jiu Jitsu school. Mr. Corey goes above and beyond for these kids each and every class. You can truly see his passion to teach our children respect, self-discipline, self control, listening skills, how to communicate with others, breathing techniques, overall how to be a good person/citizen, and more. He is also teaching our kids how to defend themselves if put in certain situations. I feel like we have stumbled upon a gold mine. We are a very competitive family and our son is involved in baseball, basketball, flag football and now jiu jitsu. Of all the sports listed, the most I'm excited for is jiu jitsu because of the life lessons Mr. Corey is teaching our children which they will take with them into adulthood. We have been involved for 3 months at this time and my son's attitude, manners, and overall respect for others and adults has improved tremendously. We are so thankful for Mr. Corey and his dedication to our kids.
I cannot say enough great things about this practice and the owner, Corey. His level of teaching is one of a kind. Our boys have been in his class for over a year. Corey instills in each student not only self defense and BJJ principles and skills, but also a sense of self value, worth, respect, and honor. He teaches all of his students through his own actions and character how to show kindness and have integrity for their words and actions. Furthermore, I have witnessed Corey personalize his teaching to and pull the best out of each student -- I've seen him tell children who are shy and quiet their voice is valuable and worth hearing -- I've seen him teach children who are wild and/or struggling with obedience/self control that self discipline and paying attention are great skills in life.
This is THE BEST BJJ location in Mobile for all ages!!
More than family
Originally when I first moved to Mobile, I was looking for just a jiu jitsu school that trained in self-defense jiu jitsu school and I found that. But what I also found was a shelter for the times I felt the most vulnerable in my life. I found lifelong brothers and sisters who have been with me, while for the first time of my life, I moved to a new city and didn’t know anybody. The environment mirrors leadership. The environment’s reflection naturally cultivates love, growth, honor, and respect, to your training partner, the forefathers of jiu jitsu, yourself, and anyone you meet in life both on and off the mat. When you take time to bow to your training partner, you trust the person in front of you will keep you safe, help you learn, keep it fun, and aren’t just hunting for a submission. This showing of respect is a well-known part of our culture. I can’t stress enough how much growth is an integral principle of GCJJ. Personally, I remember grappling with Corey who is the main instructor. Important to note that Corey has a second-degree black belt. After going for about 20 to 30 minutes and exhausting all of my energy, Corey said something profound to me that changed my outlook on training, mental health, and life. He rhetorically asked, how can you expect to control me, if you can’t even control your breathing? I believe that I not only grew as a martial artist, I grew as a person.
Growth and an open-mindset spark creativity. I have been training in jiu jitsu for four years and have had to rebuild my foundation of jiu jitsu which takes an open mind, but tailoring is key. Most jiu jitsu schools you go to, you do a move, might or might not fully learn the move, and then grapple without reinforcing what you might have learned. In class, the instructor takes time to make sure each person, no matter their level, understands the move and then we use what we learn in class while in grappling sessions (also known as sparring) to maximize our learning. The lessons at that point are tools in your toolbox. Tailoring is key - the SAFE course is for anybody to learn how to defend themselves even if you’re not interested in sparring. The leadership meets you at whatever level you’re at and doesn’t just use a jiu jitsu move for a one size fits all approach. I thought I knew somewhat about martial art principles, but Corey and GCJJ have sculpted my understanding about de-escalation (both verbal and nonverbal), how to keep my base to maintain coordination, and how to manage distance from people who can potentially cause harm. Tailoring is key.
Hidden Gem alert! Coach Corey is phenomenal. Corey is a great leader and coach, not just for Jui Jitsu but also for your child by setting firm expectations and requirements from them personally. This is not just Jui Jitsu. This is exactly what we are looking for and will continue the class just because of him and not Jui Jitsu. Thank you Corey for all that you do.
I was visiting family and friends in town and I knew my friend from home used to train BJJ in Mobile, he pointed me here to come by on this Saturday. I contacted the head instructor here, Corey through his website, to preempt my arrival and when I should try to get there, and he promptly called me back with that information in a very short time.
We started with warming up and then went through a shark tank to pass guard. This gave us the opportunity to work on a specific function to hone in on. While rolling he would give us details to work on while also coaching us through our movements. At the end he gave a Q&A for things we wanted to know from those micro-sparring sessions which was very helpful to each of us.
It was very evident the level of discipline, respect, and traditions Corey and his academy teaches, which I admire coming in from out of town.
All that to say if you are in town or planning on being in town contact Corey through his contact info on their website and go by if you get the chance, you'll be surprised what you'll learn.
They provide a very comprehensive class for first time students like myself. The Instructors are skillfull in thier craft and in their ability to educate others.
The other students I met attending the class were supportive and helpful.
I will definitely be back and will be bringing my daughter's to learn self defense techniques also.
I was in the area for school and decided to do a drop in class. Corey and his students were very friendly and welcoming. Let me borrow a GI to train in. I’ll definitely train again next time I’m in town:)
I love this place, It has helped me a lot and I can wait to go back I have been out do to personal issues and if I do say so myself this is the best jujitsu place I know of.
My son Micah absolutely enjoyed the entire experience with Mr. Corey. Mr Corey have a way of being firm and direct with the kids while having a goal to grasp the kids attention and respect. Micah soaked up all what Mr. Corey had to offer. I enjoyed seeing/hearing the genuine characteristics Mr.Corey offer to the kids especially my lil guy. Thank you
5/5, Great place to train. Both fun and educational, Jiu jitsu is specifically designed to protect yourself against other martial arts with minimal damage to both the attacker and defender. I recommend this over every other martial art, and The owner, Mr. Corey, Is a stupendous teacher.
Gulf Coast jiu-jitsu is a amazing place for not only for adult's but kids also. Mr.Corey makes it feel like family. He teaches kids self-defense and they grow confidence also self control. Mr.Corey has been a blessing!
Gulf Coast Jiu Jitsu has been one of the best experiences for our kids.
We didn’t have any expectations when we started Jiu Jitsu with Mr Corey and his team but what we realized was we found gold!
Not only is Mr Corey spot on with his technique but the way he breaks down the life skills for the kids is perfect. They have learned how to have physical base and emotional base, self defense and kindness, respect for others and them selves.
With Mr Corey, they learned real quick about respect in the class room. His attention to the smallest detail is what commands respect. He consistently corrects and praises. As a mom I so appreciate how he respects the kids. Never once raising his voice but always following through with expectations and praise for meeting expectations. He emphasizes on the energy in the room and teaches them how to handle their excess energy appropriately.
That was one of the first things they learned, was how to manage their energy. I watched as Mr Corey helped my 5 year old navigate her anxiousness being in a new place with new expectations. As a mom, I wanted to jump in and explain that she was nervous. But I didn’t have to. The moment she hit overwhelm he spotted it, got down on her level and helped her cope through it. She was able to verbalize that she didn’t know what was expected of her and he clarified instructions and encouraged her the whole way. From that moment on, I was sold. As a mom I appreciate the attentiveness to each child and their needs.
I have watched them blossom and come out of their shell with Mr Corey and his team. He knows just how to guide each of them.
If you’re thinking about joining, you won’t regret it!
Sincerely,
A mom who is so sad to be moving away from such a wonderful light in her kids life.
Great place to train. They allowed me to drop in and train when I was down here on vacation. The academy is very clean and friendly and Prof. Richardson takes the time with everyone so they more fully understand the movements. Great place to train will definitely be going back.
Great place to take your child to learn respect and confidence and defending themselves. The instructor Corey has the perfect mixture of discipline and patience with the kids. In the first week my son was showing improvement not only on the mat but at home as well. Highly recommend.
My son Ivan enjoys his jiu-jitsu 3 times a week. $119 per month. Corey, the instructor, has degree in psychology, and is absolutely great with children and teens. Also, gulf cost jiu-jitsu is in a walking distance from Lenny's sub, nail salon, Navigator bank, title company... something I get my nails done when Ivan is taking his class. Sometimes I go shopping to Winn Dixie during that time. Great shopping area.
Corey Richardson is a great instructor. He sets the tone for a positive environment and gives his best to provide quality instruction. During my time at the academy, I made friends, but more importantly, I discovered my attitude has become more positive and have seen an increase in my self-esteem. Corey showed me how much I loved Jiu-Jitsu and how important it is that it remains in my life forever. I highly recommend the academy!
I've been to a lot of different Jiu-jitsu, Judo, and Wrestling schools over the years. I've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. I know how a terrible instructor acts and behaves towards his or her students.
I can safely say that after having trained with Sensei Corey for over a year now, that he knows his stuff. He is one of the few Jiu Jitsu instructors that is hands on, and will actually train and roll with his students. He creates an environment and atmosphere that is exciting for the children and a great workout for the adults.
If you're looking for somewhere to get a fantastic workout all while learning REAL Jiu Jitsu for self-defense and competition, then this is the place for you!
Everything about this place is absolutely 100% fantastic! Fantastic Professor (Corey is one of the best, most patient teachers I’ve ever experienced). Fantastic, positive atmosphere. Fantastic peers. I’m looking forward to many years of growth with this school!
If you are reading this, you should give this school a shot!
Signed up after our first trial class because Corey Richardson was great with the kids. A perfect balance of patience and firmness. Mr. Corey definitely knows his stuff and teaches not only proper technique and skills, but also helps kids develop character skills to be respectful and upstanding individuals for well rounded success in life. I’m honored we get to participate in his class!
Professor Richardson is an extremely knowledgeable instructor who is entirely committed to offering the highest quality jiu jitsu. He doesn't just show techniques; he shows the principles and concepts that make the techniques work. This is true and pure Gracie Jiu Jitsu. He holds himself to the highest standards in jiu jitsu and in life and encourages his students to do the same. So if you're looking for high quality instruction in a clean and encouraging atmosphere, look no further.
The level of instruction is obviously top notch.
For instance, I trained/rolled with one of the 2 stripe white belts and I could feel a big difference when compared to others schools of higher belts. Also, the instructor didn't just teach technique, but had great explanations of the principles behind them. To date this has been the best school I've attended. If you want to learn how to defend yourself the old proven way this is your school if you live less than an hour away...it's worth the drive. This kind of school is hard to find and Mr. Corey Richardson will show you the original real way of GJJ.
This guy knows his stuff. Cool af and no bs attitude when it comes to self-defense and discipline. Purist philosophy Jiu Jitsu, exemplified. Best in the city.
Corry is a great instructor. His knowledge of leverage and attention to detail is amazing. You will leave the class knowing the details you need to apply your moves with the most efficiency.
Gulf Coast Jiu Jitsu is an amazing facility because they have an amazing owner/head instructor/teacher. Corey Richardson is a unique individual who is flush with incredible jiu jitsu knowledge but who can also teach. He cares for his students and is truly invested in their learning of real world self-defense and the gentle art of BJJ. The kids classes are fantastic as well. I travel the south east US and have been to many BJJ gyms. This is the one I look forward to visiting most! Do yourself a favor, get in there.
