I went to a Saturday morning open mat here. Great facility, everyone was extremely friendly, and I enjoyed my rolls. It's a little far for me, but I hope to stop by again soon. Would strongly recommend!
Groundwork BJJ is truly an incredible gym. From the first time I stepped in, I felt completely welcomed and at home. The instructors are top-notch—extremely knowledgeable, patient, and passionate about helping everyone improve, no matter their skill level. They take the time to break things down and ensure you really understand the techniques, which has made a huge difference for me. What really sets Groundwork apart, though, is the community. Everyone here is so friendly, supportive, and willing to help each other grow. It’s a place where you can train hard, push yourself, and still have a great time because the vibe is just so positive. If you’re looking for a gym to learn BJJ, get in shape, or just surround yourself with good people, I can’t recommend Groundwork BJJ enough. I’m so grateful to be part of this amazing group!
I have known the instructor since 2001, solid people , world class BJJ from the Yamasaki clan.
Great gym, great instructors. Learn jiujitsu and build confidence
Awesome place to train. Dropped in from Louisiana and they welcomed me with open arms. Great instructors and training partners. Amazing facility, highly recommended!
Highly recommend this school. The instructors are all great! I’m very comfortable training under them. Classmates are friendly. They also offer afternoon classes which work well with my schedule. Very nice and clean facility as well. Happy to train here!
Best BJJ school you can find
I was in the DMV area for the Holidays and was fortunate enough to train at Groundworks. The gym, instructors and members were extremely nice, very welcoming and I definitely recommend it for high quality jiu jitsu and great atmosphere.
Quality instruction, welcoming environment, and a great space to train in. Highly recommend for anyone interested in learning about BJJ whether as a beginner or an experienced practitioner.
I did BJJ for the first time at Groundworks over the summer. They were really great at teaching the basics and the more experienced members were helpful and not too intense when rolling. I mostly when to the open mat sessions and learned a lot from those.
Immaculately clean gym First-rate facilities Small class sizes Safe and healthy culture - no ego bs Last but not least, a truly unique teaching style that gets around mindless drilling and helps students solve problems on their own. Wish I had heard about Sean years ago! He has more than enough competition credentials to satisfy anyone wanting to seriously compete. But I have seen instructors at that level sometimes let new people fend for themselves. When I brought a family member in for his time ever on the mats, he left confident and motivated. That's a big deal. If you have experience, want to up your own skill level, but also must like to bring in the occasional new person, this is your spot, no question.
One of the most friendly and supportive gyms & communities I've ever been to. The instructors are great and use Ecological Dynamics in their teaching, which means the classes are extremely effective for skill development, incredibly approachable for beginners, and challenging for more advanced competitors, all at the same time. There's a number of black belts around, and they're all very friendly, down to earth, and helpful. They also have showers, which is a huge plus. Proud to train here.
Great place. I've been coming to Groundworks for about a month. I came from judo, hoping to improve my ground game. But the instructors -- and the way they teach -- have shown me how much fun BJJ is in of its own right. Incredible quality teaching from black belts Sean, Nigel, Yifan, (second) Sean and Chris. There's minimal talking, no 'story telling.' You're doing 90 pct situational sparring -- the ecological approach where you drill one micro technique in a fully live setting, before moving to the next, then linking them up etc. Great bunch of classmates. No egos, everyone ready to share info, safe rolling. Bonus for any other slightly bewildered judokas coming by -- they do some standup!
Incredible atmosphere and instruction. Great professors with wide ranges of knowledge. I love it here!
I was in the DC area from France so I decided to go to Groundworks BJJ for a drop-in class. I had a wonderful time, the instructors are welcoming, i loved their way of teaching and everyone there is very friendly. I highly recommend this place if you're in town, you won't regret it.
Great atmosphere for learning and top notch instruction from multiple black belts. The drills and "games" are excellent for learning positional jiujitsu and sparring is both safe and competitive. This is my favourite place to drop in in the DMV.
I have trained in different BJJ gyms in the US, Mexico, Costa Rica, France, and counting, and Groundworks BJJ is by far my favorite gym. The academy's approach to teaching, the caliber of the teachers, the mix of levels always making sure there are always experts available to help and people closer to your level to keep you motivated and feeling challenged. Highly recommended.
Was in the DC area again for work and reached out to Chris with Groundwork’s BJJ. Chris welcomed me back to their new location in Bethesda, MD. Their new location is top notch, super clean, and overall a GREAT place to learn and exercise. Again, I highly recommend Groundworks BJJ !
Best atmosphere, clean facility, men and women’s locker rooms with showers, friendly and welcoming team, highly technical/ knowledgeable instructors - can’t wait to come back!
Starting my BJJ journey at Groundworks was a fantastic choice. The instructors are welcoming, make classes engaging, and will take the time to work with you when you have questions. Everyone I trained with was very kind and willing to give me pointers as a newbie. Moreover, cleanliness and safety are clearly big priorities. Sadly, I'm moving out of the area -- but if you're nearby, you should definitely come in and train!
What a wonderful gym! Dropped in and was greeted with a supportive, friendly atmosphere. I came for open mat and asked for some feedback - Sean and Chris seem like great, technical coaches.
Went there for 2 open mats while visiting family in Bethesda. Super cool location with great grappling. Had some really fun competitive rolls. Will 100% go back if I’m in the area again.
Fantastic BJJ instruction for kids and adults of all levels, plus a great and welcoming community! Training at Groundworks has been a huge positive for the whole family. The instructors are knowledgeable, friendly, and unassuming, and the classes are well-run and very practically focused—no wasted time.
Was travelling in Washington, just stand by for a class with Sean (fundamentals no gi). One of the best experience. Felt super tired, but in a best way! Come by and start your path in bjj here!!
Attended the fundamental class and was impressed with the pragmatic and direct approach tuition. Friendly atmosphere with disciplined and focused sessions. Would definitely recommend. Thanks to Prof Sean for the great session. Best regards from South Africa!
Good rolls, good people, and a unique focus on problem solving during drill practice
Friendly atmosphere, welcoming, and a cool environment. Stopped in with my daughter while on a road trip. Kids class was great for her and the adults class was a lot of fun. A little confusing for me to find as an out of towner and it’s located in the back of a church, but the parking lot was nice considering street parking is difficult to find. Will definitely stop in if I’m ever in the DC area again.
I was in the DC area from Texas and wanted to find a good gym to roll at. Groundworks BJJ and Chris welcomed me into their gym and treated me like one of their own. The class was well structured and very professional. I highly recommend this gym to anyone visiting or who lives in the DC area.
I dropped into Groundworks visiting from NY looking for a place to train. Absolutely top notch training. If you are in the area I definitely recommend checking it out!
Dropped in here in February while in town on a work trip, very welcoming, easy to communicate with beforehand, awesome atmosphere to train in, fun instruction and trained to my level and energy. Highly recommend and will be my go-to to drop in again on future trips!
Did a drop in last night. Was awesome
Fantastic gym all-around. Context: I'm a female, purple belt, was in town visiting a friend and stopped by for rolls. The people were great, the rolls were great, the gym was great. I'd move here for this gym (if that was a reasonable thing to do). Instead, I'm just going to visit my friend more and come train here more. Would recommend.
I was away from home on travel and found Groundworks bjj. Great instructors, atmosphere, awesome training partners, and close to the Metro. If I lived in the area I would 100% make this my home gym, and recommend it to anyone looking to start or continue their BJJ journey.
Cool gym in the Tenley Town neighborhood with great instructors and a welcoming vibe. If you’re in DC, be sure to check out Groundworks!
Edit: 8 month update. Opinions have not changed, this is a special place. /edit Excellent instruction, structured, and helped with questions and corrections. Warm, welcoming environment. Knowledgeable instructors who used multiple teaching styles to help clarify the day's lessons.
Full transparency this is the only gym I have trained at in DC (since I was visiting) and there is a good reason for that! They welcomed me and treated me no differently than any of their other students. The atmosphere is excellent, upper belts are more than willing to train with lower belts. Leg locks are consistently drilled and everybody from white to black belts are meritorious of their rank and good training partners. I cannot recommend any gym more than this one!
Jiu jitsu can’t get any better in DC than here! The coaches are understanding and skilled, so hobbyist and competitors are in a stellar training environment together--able to train and have fun through a games-based approach to BJJ. Started here as a NY resolution and my biggest regret is not training here sooner. Since then, the coaches have supported me and others at competitions, even taking the time and effort to navigate shot-by-shot areas for improvement in a constructive, dedicated manner. Until joining GW, I was a sluggish working parent and now I'm pushing my boundaries and comfort level because of this team!
Great coaches, lots of experience for such a new gym, and a unique, games-based way of teaching that makes classes more fun, more approachable for beginners, and allows for faster learning. Also, there’s a great sense of community, as people regularly grab food and drinks after classes at the end of the week, and compete together as a team (for those into competition)- there’s also plenty of people that don’t compete and that’s cool too. But all of that stuff is beside the point. What makes groundworks so special is that they have the mf holy grail in their fridge. There is a flavor of Gatorade I have not seen anywhere else, except in mini-bottles in the mini-fridge at groundworks. Outside of this mini fridge, the flavor is only rumored to exist. A figment of the imagination… a myth, nay, a legend. Strawberry lemonade Gatorade. Come hence and taste the glory.
Great BJJ team! People are very nice and skillful. All coaches are very good instructures and approachable. Good place to both, start training and compete!
Groundworks BJJ in DC stands out as an exceptional gym with instructors Sean and Chris who truly excel in the art of teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Their innovative training method, focusing on continuous positional sparring, was truly impressive. During my recent work trip to DC, I had the privilege of dropping in for their classes. The instructors' unwavering dedication to teaching and their profound expertise in BJJ were unmistakable. As a guest at the gym, I was embraced by the warm and inviting atmosphere. Sean and Chris not only led the class with excellence but also extended their exceptional hospitality. Without a doubt, Groundworks BJJ is a premier training facility in the DC area. If you're seeking top-notch instruction and a distinctive training approach, Sean and Chris are your ultimate choice!
Was in town visiting and was welcomed in to train with this top shelf crew at Groundworks BJJ. If you want to train with an awesome group of athletes and legit black belts then look no further. Everyone had great energy, pace and skill and the class moved seamlessly from position to position. I would highly recommend Groundworks BJJ for anyone starting out all the way to black belt. This place is for everyone!
This review is for the kids classes. My daughter - at this point - has only taken two classes but I already know we have lucked out by having such a great environment and team of people to coach her. Shaun has a great deposition and seemingly a wealth of knowledge. Its great to see a the kids being instructed by an experienced professional. Highly recommend training here.
I dropped into Groundworks for a day and really appreciated how warm and welcoming this community was. Best BJJ gym in DC.
Trained at few different places in a few different states over the last few years, academies like Groundworks are the gems I look for. Relaxed environment, very competent trainers, and a culture of students who take care of their training partners.
The classes are concepts and game based. The instructors are great, always willing to help and answer questions. It’s a welcoming environment for anyone new to BJJ. Also, everything is routinely cleaned :) 100% recommend.
Visiting from out of town, this was a place that popped up as a place to train. The instructors and the class were extremely welcoming, and they throw a fun class using practical skill building to get their students better. Been very impressed and would highly recommend.
very nice people and serious training. highly recommend.
I was a drop in. Regularly train when I’m on the road with work or for pleasure. The group of practitioners leading the training are on the cutting edge of BJJ training theory. Great crew, very welcoming, will definitely be back next time I am in town.
Went to a few gyms and this one was head and shoulders above the rest in DC.
This is an excellent place to train. I dropped in for an open mat and met a lot of people across all belt levels. Everyone was super friendly, welcoming and more than willing to teach me some new tricks. The gym owners themselves were very warm-hearted people and offered to roll with me as well which was tremendously helpful. Facilities were super clean and plenty of mat space for a big crew to roll. Would give this place an 11 out of 10 and recommend to anyone looking for a place to train while visiting DC or even begin their jiu jitsu journey.
I dropped in here while travelling and loved it. Amazing in both gym culture and instruction. A lot of games rather than drilling which allows more exploration.
Spent 7 months there, this place is genuinely as good as it gets for learning BJJ. Could not recommend it more.
I travel a lot for work, and usually try to take a BJJ class wherever I am. I've gone to a lot of places, and this is by far one of the best gyms I've ever gone to. The lessons are absolutely top notch, and everybody is cool as hell. I hope to visit every time I am in the DC area.
Great people and practice. I dropped in while traveling and had a great time. Very welcoming and relaxed vibes with some hard rolls if wanted. Sean showed me a really neat back take that I'll add to the bag of tricks. Will definitely visit again.
I travel to the area once in a while and have been looking for a good place to train. I dropped in for a class a couple of weeks ago - loved it! Knowledgeable instructors, great gym and quality training. I will be coming back here in the future for sure!
Came here for my first time training BJJ. The instructors were amazing in teaching me the basics and helping me get better. Could not recommend this place more for people looking to get into the sport!
I’ve trained at Groundworks for 1.5+ years and love it there. It’s a friendly, fun, and welcoming environment with a wide range of students of various ages and abilities. The coaches are all very knowledgeable, excellent teachers that focus both on teaching techniques and the concepts behind those techniques. They are also always happy to provide individualized attention and instruction during class. Safety and cleanliness of the gym are also top priorities. It’s been a great experience training at Groundworks - I’ve made some great friends and vastly improved my Jiu Jitsu there. I can’t recommend it enough.
So last year I was looking to join a new BJJ gym. I knew Chris and Sean L from rolling elsewhere so when I found out they were opening their own place I had a pretty strong feeling they were going to do things right. They are. Well, I should say them and the other instructors (Sean D, Nigel & Yifan). The way they combine the proverbial lab and lecture with positional sparring, the way they present information in a way that's intuitive, the way they keep drama and egos out of the equation, all this stuff is great. I don't know how else to say it, it's just kind of the place you want to be at. I've been at this a few years, I'm just your average hobbyist without competition ambitions but I feel like my game has progressed faster at Groundworks than it has elsewhere. If you're on the fence I'd recommend stopping in.
I started practicing Brazilian jiu-jitsu at Groundworks in December 2021. Since then, it has become my most transformative and enjoyable hobby. The instructors here emphasize practical applications and the sparring aspect of the martial art. Their teachings have been consistently evolving and every class feels like a meaningful step forward in my jiu-jitsu development.
Seasoned practitioner here. Amazing! Best instructors in town and a fantastic collegiate atmosphere. Classes have a great tempo and structure to help facilitate fast learning and retention. Start today!
Groundworks Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one of my favorite places in the US. The coaches are absolutely professional. In addition, the gym's atmosphere is always cozy, too. I firmly believe that you can enjoy the perfect jiujitsu experience regardless of your level.
I've trained at other academies in the DC area and have found Groundworks to be exceptional. It stands out with an excellent student to coach ratio who are available to answer questions and provide feedback at a consistency I didn't have with larger academies. If you're like myself and ask a lot of questions, they have you covered. All of the coaches are knowledgable and accessible. The gym has a great community with a range of skill, size, age, and style that feels both challenging and safe. While we all have slumps, work travel, and injuries in our training schedule, the Groundworks community has been supportive in their encouragement of the learning process at a rate and intensity that works for you. As a Yamazaki affiliate, the gym provides a solid network of guest coaches and legends in the community that come to share their expertise with class. Can't say enough about the quality of coaches and training partners. Feels like a privilege to be here. If you're looking for a good gym in DC with attention to detail, the student, and the process - highly recommend Groundworks.
Groundworks is an excellent place to train with knowledgeable instructors and great teammates.
I've been doing martial arts for my whole life, and Groundworks BJJ sits there as possibly the best dojo I've been a part of. First, all instructors are very knowledgeable and friendly. Second, the space is very well maintained aesthetically as well as hygeine wise. The classes happen almost every day with Open Mats Fridays and Saturdays. So, you can train even if you have a busy schedule. The classes are always well done, giving a big importance to learning through problem solving. Often, we will be asked to experiment on a certain BJJ problem and be asked to find solutions for that problem. This kind of teaching encompasses the whole philosophy of Groundworks and makes it a great place to learn new martial arts.
Exceptional gym with a friendly atmosphere! The instructors are highly technical, friendly, and creative in developing ways to help members learn. The gym is welcoming to beginners and experienced athletes alike. Training is split evenly between gi/nogi throughout the week, with great open mats on the weekends.
Excellent instruction from a variety of instructors. Classes have good structure and are effective. Super convenient location essentially next door to Tenleytown Metro and ample parking. Facilities are also super clean.
I’ve been going to Groundworks for a little more than 3 months now and 100% recommend if you’re looking for a DC gym. The instructors are very good at what they do, and are so friendly and welcoming. It’s a relaxed, supportive atmosphere and you can go to as many classes as you want. Nice convenient location too if you commute on the metro, but they also have parking. As a girl I know grappling gyms can be intimidating, so definitely try this one out if you’re in the same boat!
Amazing gym! They were very welcoming and had a great atmosphere
The guys were great and hospitable. For sure check them out!
Everything about my experience at Groundworks was outstanding. Chris, the owner, was friendly and welcoming. The facility is impeccably clean. The instruction was detailed and easy for all levels to understand. The instructors and student are technical and tough as hell! If you are in the area or visiting DC like I was, please give Groundworks a chance- you will not be disappointed! Great jiu jitsu!
Ground Works Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is second to none in terms of gyms in which to learning this powerful and cerebral Martial Art. I am originally a striker and am very recently getting into MMA and because of this I have embarked on a quest to understand the art of grappling....While it is a very powerful martial it, BJJ is very cerebral in nature and to learn the tricks of the trade; it requires guiding hands who know how to take you from a place of non-understanding...to a place of understanding. The coaches here don't have you learn the techniques mindlessly...but really try to make sure that you( the student) intuitively understand " the why" behind the technique you are doing so in the end you become more fluid in your thinking and usage of these techniques and principles. The coaches here are highly skilled, patient, good-hearted, fun, respectful, and diligent hard workers who are addicted to the sport and art of BJJ and as someone who is just now learning the martial art I can say this is one of my favorite places to train.
Super friendly and welcoming group of people. Very clean. Excellent class structure.
Today was my first time at Groundworks. Chris and Sean were very gracious and welcoming. They are experienced and good at explaining. There are quite several women, which makes me as a female feel more comfortable. The girl I sparred with was very friendly
I did a drop in class while in DC and was lucky enough to walk into GroundWorks BJJ. The instruction was great and the school has a great training environment. I would recommend this gym to anyone looking to train in the DC area
I stopped through Groundworks while visiting DC and had a wonderful experience. The instructors were super welcoming and provided great, individual feedback and instruction. I found the overall gym environment to be really friendly and respectful, which is always appreciated when visiting a new gym. Would definitely recommend!
Came here as a guest and was treated like I was a part of the team. They do a fine job at combining play and competition with drills that are conducive to real life situations. The aesthetics are clean and simple and the school is very organized itself. I would definitely recommend Groundworks as place to start/continue your journey in jiu jitsu.
Great coaches and super friendly
Was welcomed in. Class and mat time was what I expected. A good work out and good time. I would return when I come back to DC. Thank you Groundworks
Great coaches, great training environment! My favorite part of every week is Saturday open mat! Couldn’t recommend dropping in for a free trial day more!
We came in for a drop in for our 10 year old while traveling on holiday. Chris was the instructor and he was very welcoming, and led an excellent kids class! Our home gym is led by some great instructors, so we know what good bjj is, and this place has it!
I started training here in August, super clean gym and great training atmosphere for all levels.
Great gym all around! Really great technical instruction and the coaches really invest in everyone there, helping troubleshoot techniques for all levels and sizes. The environment is also friendly and welcoming, the mats are clean, and because it's on the third floor the air flow is great (which is an underrated perk in my book)
I’ve been traveling out of town and this is one of the best BJJ gyms I’ve visited so far. There’s a very healthy culture and community at Groundworks. The instructors (Chris and the two Seans) teach a very modern approach to BJJ. Instead of just showing a position, practicing it a few times, and then sparring, they have us play games to really drill in the position and how it connects to the overall picture. I have found this style to be extremely beneficial as a beginner who is still trying to understand the fundamentals. One of my favorite things about the gym is the strong sense of community. On Thursdays we go out to a Mexican restaurant after class and travel to other gyms. Whether you are new to BJJ or have been practicing for a while you’ll be sure to find an awesome community and phenomenal training here at Groundworks. OSS!
Love training here. The instructors are very knowledgeable, professional, and welcoming to newcomers. The space is super clean with the highest quality equipment and the location is super convenient.
Groundworks is an outstanding culture with instructors that know how to get the best of you and help you improve your game at all levels and proficiency. #1 Go To when I’m in the area! Sign up and start your own personal journey!
Dropped in for a no gi class while in town and I received a warm welcome. Chris is a great teacher, the gym was very clean and pleasant, and, as an older female student, I had a very positive experience training at Groundworks.
The customer support at this gym was quick and very helpful. Chris answered all of my questions in a quick, professional, and friendly manner.
Dropped in for an open mat and experienced a truly welcoming environment. Everyone was great to roll with and all of the coaches provided specific feedback for improvements. Had a great time and would absolutely go back.
I had a great time rolling here while passing through DC for a weekend—Chris and co. were super helpful, patient, generous with their time and knowledge, and made me feel welcome. Would definitely recommend if in you’re in the area!
Loved training here. On one hand the atmosphere is collegial, light hearted, and friendly. On the other hand, you may have an advanced class with multiple high level local competitors. Many schools don't have a balance like that, and that makes Groundworks a special place. In a few weeks I made big leaps in my game and found weaknesses I'll be working to fix for a while. That is the hallmark of a good academy. 10/10.
The staff is great, their attention to detail and ability to break down techniques in a concise, straight to point manner is unmatched. My three kids thoroughly enjoy training here.
This place rules. I was in town visiting from CA and the team at groundworks opened their doors to me and made me feel extremely welcomed. Super nice guys. Super hard rounds. If you’re in DC this place is worth checking out !
Great academy for bjj classes in DC! Classes were really good and entertaining, the place is clean, people are nice, it’s pretty much all you can ask. Sean and Chris are both awesome instructors and really cool dudes! Highly recommended whether you’re interested in starting brazilian jiu-jitsu or a seasoned and experienced student.
I dropped by for open mat and everyone was very welcoming and friendly. The higher belts have very solid technique and sportsmanship. Overall, it feels like a very good training environment for everybody. Thank you.
Fantastic gym with great instructors who can teach for all levels of experience. The environment was also super welcoming and had great practitioners there. I've been training for 7 years and it's great to see such a great school open up in the area.
Just started training here. So far its been fantastic. They have two beginner classes but allow anyone to learn in the more advanced classes and scale to match skill level. Chris, Sean and Sean are all awesome instructors and keep a friendly, everyone is welcome attitude as well as being very COVID conscious and clean in general. The training facility is amazing, they really have a great spot. Lots of free parking.
Awesome place to learn and train in Tenleytown/Upper NW DC. legit black belt instructors that are friendly and detail-oriented. clean and non-sketchy. fun and instructional rolling and sparring with a mix of skill levels! strongly recommended for ppl doing bjj / sub grappling esp beginners and intermediates. all-around great environment!
Groundworks BJJ is the best place I have ever trained. The instructors each have decades of experience training, competing and teaching BJJ. They are kind, communicative and go above and beyond to facilitate an environment conducive to improving the skills and wellbeing of each and every one of their students. If you are looking for a place to train, please, look no further. Give them a call or send them an email and you will be welcomed as if you are part of the fam - Matt
New people beware I told the instructor that I had just taken one class before in a different state. When I joined the class, he paired me with someone for the whole hour, without telling them anything about me being new. The person I was paired with went quite hard - head felt like it was smashed, tapped multiple times, strained neck, bruised shoulder, open sores on feet for weeks. I thought this intensity was normal, but I consulted a family member who's been doing jiu jitsu for years and she said this is not good practice, to pair new people with someone going so hard. A bigger concern is that I messaged the instructor (or whichever employee I had been texting about going to the first class), advising that he should probably pair new people with someone who isn't going all out, for safety reasons, but he never responded. I'm not saying don't go to this gym. I'm saying if you do go, speak up if it's painful and your partner is going too hard. May sound common sense, but new people don't know what "too hard" is.
I did not have a good experience while training at Groundworks. During the techniques and drilling portion of the class, I suffered a broken bone when my partner suddenly dropped all of their weight on me while attempting a guard pass. In my opinion, my partner was treating every moment while training with a win at all costs intensity which is ultimately what led to my injury. I would not feel safe returning and would not recommend this gym to others, especially those with less experience in BJJ.
