Ground Control MMA is by far the best gym I’ve ever been to. The environment is welcoming, non-intimidating, and genuinely friendly. The coaches are highly supportive and actively move around the mats, ensuring students are learning the correct posture and techniques. They focus on quality instruction and emphasize proper form, which makes a big difference in learning and progression.

Great gym to start martial arts. One of the smaller gyms located in Auckland that does MMA/BJJ. If you're looking for both striking and BJJ, they have it. Also, they do wrestling, but that is for members only. (Was only on trial when writing this) What I like about the gym is that they're welcoming from the first day. I tried the 4-week trial that was offered online and was really pleased with the culture of the gym when I walked in. BJJ: BJJ was a great experience, was my first time doing it, and I liked how, as a beginner, I was treated well. Was really fun learning BJJ, which the coach helped add to it, and I felt safe with who I partnered with (they were a blue belt). Also, I liked how I was asked how the experience was by Mike, the owner/head coach, after the lesson, which was good to see. Striking: Striking(MMA) is on Tuesday and Friday. Again the coaching and lessons for this was a good experience, They mix in beginners and more experienced people together in this lesson so if you're just starting out you can learn from someone more well versed in the art. Price: The price for training here is 42 dollars a week(w/$100 joining fee). Bit more expensive (depending where you go), but you're getting a good experience. Overall: Welcoming and a great gym to train at. If you're looking for a gym that trains a mixture of disciplines, this is the place. However, if you're looking for more of a striking aspect, it would be better to try another gym as it is only on 2 days. BJJ seems to be more of a focus here, hence the name of the place. I would train here, but it doesn't fit my time schedule and also having a personal preference in wanting striking more, which is only for 2 days. Would recommend training here regardless.

I started my martial arts journey at ground control and now I can grapple in live situations with CONFIDENCE. Ground control offers a great friendly environment with people of all ages and skill. I'm always nervous to go to training- as I'm a small fellow. But once I arrive the community is so friendly I leave forgetting that I was even worried in the first place, taking home essential skills with me. I can also appreciate the owner, Michael who also is always implementing changes and figuring out how he can make the most value out of his classes.

My first place to train BJJ. Everyone is accommodating, and passionate about sharing and trying things for each other. Safe and also thrilling practices every time.

This place focuses on teaching techniques, so weather you're a beginner, have been inactive lately etc. It doesn't really matter as long as you understand English you are good to go. Don't expect any HIIT workouts or any conditioning exercises (jump ropes, heavy bags etc.) they will not try to kill you before you start the actual class like some gyms do. They sell most of the stuff you will need in their class (gi, gloves, shin guards rash guards) at a really reasonable price. And lastly the learning atmosphere is really fun and enjoyable, time passes fast during their classes, anyway I highly recommend it 😊
