Casey Johnston’s journey in Jiu-Jitsu began at the age of four under the tutelage of his father, Jake Johnston. The page says he assisted his father in running classes at Gracie Zion in 2012 and completed the Instructor Certification Program in July 2022.
Jake’s journey into Gracie Jiu-Jitsu began in the summer of 1992. The page says he relocated to Provo to train under Pedro Sauer and finally began his training under Master Pedro Sauer in the summer of 1993.
Since 2012, Melissa Johnston has trained under her husband, Jake. The page says she is the lead instructor for the Women Empowered program and also handles administrative duties behind the scenes.
Morgan Gibbs began seriously studying Kenpo with his father and brother before later checking out a local Gracie Certified Training Center. The page says he became obsessed with Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and completed the Instructor Certification Program to help new students discover their potential.

I'm having a lot of fun learning Jiu-Jitsu. Jake, Casey and Ian are great instructors and though I'm still quite new, I feel like it's coming together pretty well.
For me, the Gracie system is the best fit to learn BJJ. On top of that is the outstanding instruction by Jake, Melissa, K.C. and Ian. The techniques are broken down step-by-step with attention to detail and safety. Plus, the other members are welcoming and helpful!
I learned from Jake for a couple years many years ago and as soon as my kid was old enough I was excited to have him take the kids class. Jake is one of those rare people who is both good at something AND good at teaching it to both adults and kids. We are lucky to have him here. If you or your kids want to learn real Gracie Jiu Jitsu, there's no better use of your time.
Absolutely love it! I was invited by a friend to go to a free Women Empowered seminar, and I was instantly welcomed into a group of amazing people! I had been wanting to get into Jiu-Jitsu for a while, but I didn't know where to go or where to start. I am so glad I found this place. The environment is top notch, and you couldn't ask for better instructors! I am so happy to be a part of this community and to get to show up and get after it at Gracie St. Gorge!

Absolutely love this studio! My son has had a hard time sticking with any extracurriculars and was resistant to the idea of jiu jitsu at first. This has been perfect for him. The owners are so friendly and the structure of the program has really made my son feel empowered. It's so cool to see him grow and push himself and build a foundation here. My daughter is enrolled too and loves it.
The school is amazing and fun. All the instructors are awesome and very knowledgeable. They make it fun and safe to learn. I thought it might be very intimidated and awkward. But I was wrong.. they make you feel very comfortable and welcome. Feels like a second family in just a few months!!
A great place to learn Jiu-Jitsu! Gracie focuses on self defense techniques that you can start using from day one. It's a low impact program with a clear curriculum to follow. Jake is helpful, friendly and an expert teacher. The classes are fun and rewarding. If you are looking for a low impact martial arts program, if you are looking for the best self defense techniques, if you are looking to build your self confidence, you need to give Jake a try. You will not regret it and you might even love it!
I can't say enough good about Gracie St. George. I wanted to get into Jiu-Jitsu for years but never knew where or how to start, and as a complete beginner it can be intimidating. I signed up for the 10 day trial and after my very first class I was sold. The Gracie Combative courses are perfectly paced for beginners and everyone is really welcoming. Great people, great environment!

If you're looking to feel better about yourself and the people you know. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is an amazing place. I have known the owner Jake Johnston and his beautiful family for well over 4 years. They emulate a love of whom they train and whom they serve Jake is the gentlest man you'll ever meet. His son Casey is just like his father experienced in Jiu-Jitsu and they express a great love for everyone they're around. Most people that need therapy experience a safe place where you're respected, cared for and at the same time learning a respectable martial art form. Melissa, Jake's wife manages the office and is extremely knowledgeable about ways in which new students will love the instruction and feel as though they're apart of a loving family and Ian he's an amazing asset to this operation he makes you feel safe and respected with a loving surfer accent. What a really fun place to learn to be a better human all while protecting yourself and having the skills to be confident in who you are by learning the Gracie way of Jiu-Jitsu.

This is an excellent gym to train and learn BJJ. I moved here from New England and haven't trained at a Gracie gym before. Jake is a talented and passionate instructor who imparts his knowledge to students clearly, concisely, and safely. He is very skilled in quickly identifying stuck points in students' techniques and making the appropriate corrections to sharpen their game. I always get a warm welcome when stepping in the door and leave feeling good.

I can't say enough good things about this place. The instructors and members of this club are incredible. Every time I enter the gym I am greeted with a big smile and someone who knows my name. There are absolutely no egos at this place and the instructors take the appropriate amount of time with each student to ensure each move is done correctly, effectively, and without injury. My son and I have been training here for a month and have found a community that is all about teaching and creating good human beings.
My 9 year old daughter is loving Jiu Jitsu! She did the 10 day trial and never wanted to stop. Jake and his team are great with everyone including the parents. They make it fun while they learn. 10/10 recommended.
Did a 10 day trial here for my first ever Jiu jitsu class and I fell in love with it. Jake, Casey, and Dave run a phenomenal academy. I’m testing the waters at other local places but the guys here make you feel very welcomed, and safe at all times. Will be referring to friends.

Jake and Ian are very kind, and knowledgeable. They teach Gracie Jiu-Jitsu that emphasizes self defense. I've trained at a couple of sport jiu jitsu gyms that left me questioning its practically but Gracie St. George teaches you how to protect yourself from an attacker. Highly recommend

Not only are the classes amazing, but the people here will make you want to change your life for the better. Jake, Ian and Melissa are some of the most down to earth people that always give you great vibes and a feeling of confidence in your life that you can’t really find anywhere else. Jake is one of the ‘old school’. His understanding of jiu-jitsu is from a time and perspective of self defense and efficiency. Not all jiu-jitsu is created equal. Trust me when I say technique matters…and Jake is as technical as they come.
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu St George is an excellent place to learn and train. I stopped by with my son a few months ago and I couldn’t even spell Jiu-Jitsu. After a couple of classes I was hooked. The owners/instructors are phenomenal. Not only are they professional and knowledgeable, but they break everything down and explain things in a way that even a moron like me can piece it together. On top of that, it’s a great atmosphere. Jake and Ian bring such a positive attitude that it’s impossible not to have fun. Everyone always seems to have a great time in the classes. In fact, I signed up my five year old grandson a couple of weeks ago for the Bullyproof classes and he’s super stoked; he can’t stop talking about it. They also have options for private lessons which help me because I’m out of town a lot.
This place has helped me so much. Jake, Ian and Melissa are amazing. I can’t even put into words how great this Makes me feel. I am grateful to have learned about this place and people. I have been training for a few months now. My son is 6 and is the bully proof classes he is learning so much about respect, and how to defend himself. We love it so much. I have my first strip and now my son does to. When you start everyone is so welcoming and helpful it has become a big family. It has built my confidence and changed my life. Visiting from out of state and this school was right next to the hotel I was staying in. My son and I train at another school in Arizona. I was bored and tired of the hotel room so I wandered over just to peer through the window. I ended up speaking with several from the school and the head instructors wife. If I lived in St George I would be thrilled to attend this school. The school had a welcoming environment and genuinely nice people. I encourage anyone to check this place out. I believe you will have a great time and learn something that could be life changing.
The owner Jake was gracious enough to allow my son Gabe to train there this last week. Gabe is current Kids Panamerican Champion and current Sjjif World Champ. These fighters at even white belt the starter belt were very very well trained not to mention strong. Gabe trains when we travel all over the country i have to say this gym would be in the top 10% as far as skill level, fitness, cleanliness and the bjj culture of respect. You are all blessed to have this gym and this Professor in St. George.

I've trained a few places and this place is the best. The instructors (Jake and Ian) are great. The experience and level of expertise they bring is difficult to find. The classes are relaxed, laid back, and effective. The atmosphere is the best I've experienced in any place that I've trained.

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu St. George is a great place to learn self-defense! Jake Johnston is an incredible instructor and of course, the curriculum is second to none! If you want to learn how to defend yourself in a realistic situation and you live in the area, then pay them a visit, you won't be disappointed.
The environment is clean (swept, sprayed with disinfectant and wiped, every evening), safe and supportive for all age and skill levels. Each session consists of 2-4 techniques broken down into digestable 'slices' with repeated practice on changing partners, resulting in a rapid connection of visual, verbal and experiential learning. Jake and Ian employ a balance of jovial humor and seriousness in their presentation and hands on coaching; always keeping a sharp eye for energy economy and safety (for all participants) and encouraging an atmosphere of feedback among the students. Class sizes are manageable so it doesn't feel crammed yet never empty and new students are joining regularly. As for the modality of Jiu-Jitsu itself - it's freaking awesome and such a valuable discipline for anyone looking to learn self-protection, gain confidence, build community, exercise (you will be sweating by the end - I assure you) and learn more about the vast capabilities of the human body. As a fellow educator, Massage Therapist and endurance sport athlete, I highly recommend this establishment to anyone interested in exploring Jiu-Jitsu. Top notch training in southern Utah! The owner’s pay special attention to the needs of students, taking time to properly explain the techniques and theories behind them.There is no intimidation factor in training at this school. Not a bunch of overly aggressive steroided out MMA fighters. I’ve trained with Jake Johnston for over ten years, now my son is training with him as well. If you’re on the fence about training Jiu jitsu, just come down and try it, you won’t regret it!
