Great environment and excellent professors definitely recommend
Great family activity that we started to not only keep us fit but also learn some valuable self defense techniques. We have to give a special shout out to Professor Jay and Professor Gabriel, the way they interact with the kids are amazing! Highly recommend Gracie Barra SW Portland!
Long time white belt from 10p, just moved to Portland and thought I would check around at the jiujitsu gyms in my area. Knowing that this was a Gracie gym I was stoked to see the energy here. I was welcomed whole heartedly with genuine smiles. The mats were clean. Place looked and smelt great. I’m a very slow learner (long time white belt as well 4+ yrs) The professor and the purple belt instructor made sure to consistently check in with me and my friend breaking down the movements when needed. Gave us an excellent run down of what Gracie barra is all about. I was happy that this wasn’t a land of the giants. They had a variety of people with different body types and walks of life. The professor taught the lesson in a way that I was actually able to grasp! I’m very impressed with the level of professionalism presented here and will most definitely be back for more. Recommended? Absolutely. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Me and my two boys were in-town for a week and dropped in for a couple classes. Professor Gabriel is an excellent teacher who spent a lot of time with his students and genuinely cares about them. The schedule is super accommodating for anyone looking for flexibility and options. The mats were clean and everyone was very friendly. If you're in the Portland area and looking for a quality school for yourself or your kids, then I highly recommend Gracie Barra SW Portland!
Thanks for being so welcoming! My son is loving your summer tween/teen camps and I love that you're offering such a cool, diverse range of affordable options!
Posted 2 years agoI was looking for a new Muay Thai gym near my place and striking out. Having not done any grappling, bjj wasn’t super appealing, but I decided to check this place out with limited expectations. I’m only a month and some change in, but the bjj bug bit me after the first week. The people are all extremely friendly and helpful. My professor is a legit Brazilian bjj black belt who rolls with anyone and everyone at the academy (and is extremely encouraging and patient with new folks like myself), and the whole experience has exceeded my expectations in every way. Last thing I’ll say is that I was NOT expecting rolling to be such an intense workout. I considered myself to be pretty fit prior to starting here, and I quickly learned what a unique full body workout bjj is (intense isometric work and cardio combined). Can’t recommend it enough. It sounds like the key is to keep showing up with an open mind and willingness to work, which I’m eager to do!
Great place, great environment. Everyone is very professional. Looking forward to be part of the team.
My son started going here and it’s very good, with positive energy, appropriate discipline, and is a great place for kids and adults to learn useful skills.
Cannot recommend enough! Our son started in their Little Champions class when he was 3 1/2 and has been going consistently for almost 2 years now! The professors are amazing. They know each kid by name, they aren't just "another enrollment" here. They are incredible at commanding the kids' attention just by way of being respectful and demanding that respect back. We had tried a few places prior to Gracie Barra that had to resort to yelling at the kids to get attention and that was not for us! I love the skills and values our son is learning with GB- the skills are presented as self defense and not just a "fight to fight" approach, and they also teach from a growth mindset perspective. My husband started with Gracie Barra years ago in California and had trained with a few other schools when we were living in areas without access to a GB school and Gracie Barra is by far the best all around. Also love that with a monthly membership there are 3 times each week our son can go to class so it feels like a great value as well.
What an amazing place to learn and grow. My entire family trains here!
Dropped by a morning class. Well structured class with good details on the drills. It was a friendly environment and a good time rolling 👍
A really welcoming place to train with very knowledgeable coaches. The dedication is superior and there is such a large array of classes available even including a family weekend class. I love training here and can't think of a single suggestion. I highly recommend.
I’ve been training here for a just under a year and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The instructors here are great. You will quickly find out that this place checks a lot of boxes checked off for you. You will develop a new skills, get a great workout, build an awesome community, and grow as a person in many other ways. It’s an honor to learn Gi-Jujitsu from Professor Jay Gabriel and No-Gi from Professor Ole and Holden. All the people who train here are great too - I’ve never once felt overwhelmed and have made many great practitioners as well. The upper belts are always willing to teach the newer belts from the first day forward. Even during my first two weeks, I felt like I belonged here. My two sons and wife have also followed the Jiu-jitsu journey. It feels good doing it together as a family too. You won’t be disappointed.
All the professors and students are great here. Never have I felt intimidated or uncomfortable. I would recommend this school to anyone who is looking to get into Jiu jitsu.
Great school, great instruction, great environment!
Ambiente com astral nota 1000, sem contar os professores que fazem o dia a dia ser incrível. Mestre Revoredo brabo demais
Professor Gabriel is an amazing instructor His knowledge is incredible He does a great job teaching the kids I had the opportunity to teach a class by his side and I was so impressed how he can make things look so easy so the students can understand what was taught
Excelente escola de jiu-jitsu e professores nota 10000.
Awesome atmosphere with knowledgeable instructors! Everyone was very welcoming and helpful when I first started and in the year since I’ve joined I’ve learned a lot and made great friendships.
Brazilian Jujitsu, MMA, Judo, Kid classes, Family Classes, Women's Classes, Competition Classes, Exercise, Healthy Lifestyle, friends, fun! What more do you want? This Gym has a great set of instructors; a unique engaging and well maintained culture; and some real good jujitsu training!
Great school. Love the professors and coaches and the team.
Our family loves our time at GB SW PDX. great community and the management is flexible and relaxed.
Amazing place. Great training, friendly people, willing to put you through your paces and support you along the way. Highly recommend for all ages.
My family was the 2nd or 3rd to sign up with Jay at SW Gracie Barra all those years ago and we’ve stayed through all the tumult and restrictions over the last couple years because this is hands down the best gym to train at in and around the PDX area. From the kids classes to the adult, you won’t find a nicer, sincere, hard working group of people. I feel very lucky to be a part of the SW Gracie Barra family!
This is a good place train for both kids and adults. It’s a friendly group of both students and coaching staff, which makes for a pleasant environment. Safety is highly prioritized. Would highly recommend.
I've been wanting to learn and train Jiu Jitsu for few years now, but I was never able to find the right place to do so. After looking around the PDX Metro area and checking several schools I could not find one that was a good fit for me and my daughter and I almost give up to the idea of learning the art. Up until I found Gracie Barra SW PDX, they are very friendly and professional as well as they provide a very safety environment specially during this pandemic months. Jay was very attentive and informative when I first contact the place and offered me to come and check them out so my daughter and I took their courtesy class with coach Jay and coach Madison. We were very happy and satisfied with them and their professionalism. So we signed up and are very happy to train and learn Jiu Jitsu with Gracie Barra SW Portland. I highly recommend you to come and check them out, you will not regret it. Victor S.
I absolutely love this place! I was invited to do a free day and now I'm hooked. Highly recommend checking out Gracie Barra SW Portland. Great group of people. Superbly satisfied in my experience thus far.
Great gym with a great group of people. Whether your looking for training, or only to get in shape, there's a wide variety of skill levels, body types, etc.. to work out with.
Great place to practice Jiu-jitsu in town. The mats are clean and well sanitized during Covid time. The atmosphere is welcoming. Additionally, professors and coaches are knowledgeable. Thank you! Jason.
Great space and location. Clean open and welcoming. The coaches and the owner are really with the kids and have a great mix of technical training, physical endurance and most importantly fun.
Great place to train. Lots of knowledge. Its clean and has a friendly atmosphere.
I have been to many BJJ and MMA gyms throughout the greater Portland area over the last 10 years. GBSWPDX has by far, the nicest facility I have seen. The seminars they have held with World Champion caliber competitors have been amazing as well.
Great place for the family all around! My previous gym stopped offering kids class, but I loved it and after I found out my instructor was filling in here, I brought the family to try it out. The facility is brand new! New mats, showers, loaner go's for kids and adults and the owner, Jay, was really cool about letting me drop in to decide on the move. I wanted to focus on doing a tournament and my wife wants to get her conditioning and technique (nothing crazy). This gym is great for all! FYI, I hurt my knee and Jay was cool enough to let me use part of the mat (during class) to keep my conditioning and do light exercises on my own! Stop by and try it out, the place is legit.
Been training here for a few months and have nothing but good things to say. In terms of facilities, cleanliness, and above all coaching ability this gym sets a really high bar. Great team to be a part of.
"I was very nervous when I started 2 months ago but I am in love with it now. I love the people, the training, and awesome professors and coach. Come and try for a free session, and test your self-defense skill."
I've been training at Gracie Barra SW Portland for five months, and have found both excellent instruction and camaraderie. Professor Bruno Rocha, the head instructor, is a third degree black belt who has trained BJJ for 20 years. He regularly competes in gi and no gi competitions across the world, and it's an honor to learn from someone with that caliber of experience. My daughter also trains here, and the kids classes are a nice mix of general physical activity, BJJ techniques, and instilling good values like grit and respect. Jay Stahl, the owner and a coach (he holds a purple belt), helps foster a safe and welcoming environment for adults, kids, and parents alike.
Looks like a really cool Samurai mural. Will have to visit soon!
Super fun atmosphere with great teachers. Plus this gym has the coolest mural I’ve ever seen! Every time I look at the painting of the stag fighting a samurai mounted on a blue tiger I get just get amped
What a great place! Nice and clean and open to all ages! Brought my kids for the first time 10 and 12yo and they loved it! Planning on making this a whole family event that we can all learn and enjoy! Great teachers and great location!
Professor Bruno Rocha is a master of his craft as a 3rd degree black belt and with multiple international gold medals. However, the humble patience and approachability of him makes it not scary to come and try! I felt very safe and welcome as a female in this gym. They also do community service here by teaching free self defense classes for females on a reoccurring basis. All age levels train here and its a good, clean family environment. I tried several gyms before landing at gracie barra and this is one of the nicest facilities I’ve seen. Everyone was very welcoming
Amazing facility with a welcoming crew. I did two free trial classes at this Gracie Barra and could not have been more pleased. The instructor was extremely knowledgeable and was able to give me some individual attention despite it being a group class. Plus, they have showers! I will definitely be a returning member.
This not what I thought I give this place a 1 in half of star. my kids hated this place and parents out please don't take your kids here and I find somewhere else Better kim taekwon.
