Me and my two boys were in-town for a week and dropped in for a couple classes. Professor Gabriel is an excellent teacher who spent a lot of time with his students and genuinely cares about them. The schedule is super accommodating for anyone looking for flexibility and options. The mats were clean and everyone was very friendly. If you're in the Portland area and looking for a quality school for yourself or your kids, then I highly recommend Gracie Barra SW Portland!
Posted a week agoCannot recommend enough! Our son started in their Little Champions class when he was 3 1/2 and has been going consistently for almost 2 years now! The professors are amazing. They know each kid by name, they aren't just "another enrollment" here. They are incredible at commanding the kids' attention just by way of being respectful and demanding that respect back. We had tried a few places prior to Gracie Barra that had to resort to yelling at the kids to get attention and that was not for us! I love the skills and values our son is learning with GB- the skills are presented as self defense and not just a "fight to fight" approach, and they also teach from a growth mindset perspective. My husband started with Gracie Barra years ago in California and had trained with a few other schools when we were living in areas without access to a GB school and Gracie Barra is by far the best all around. Also love that with a monthly membership there are 3 times each week our son can go to class so it feels like a great value as well.
Posted 3 months agoI was looking for a new Muay Thai gym near my place and striking out. Having not done any grappling, bjj wasn’t super appealing, but I decided to check this place out with limited expectations. I’m only a month and some change in, but the bjj bug bit me after the first week. The people are all extremely friendly and helpful. My professor is a legit Brazilian bjj black belt who rolls with anyone and everyone at the academy (and is extremely encouraging and patient with new folks like myself), and the whole experience has exceeded my expectations in every way. Last thing I’ll say is that I was NOT expecting rolling to be such an intense workout. I considered myself to be pretty fit prior to starting here, and I quickly learned what a unique full body workout bjj is (intense isometric work and cardio combined). Can’t recommend it enough. It sounds like the key is to keep showing up with an open mind and willingness to work, which I’m eager to do!
Posted 2 months agoI've been training at Gracie Barra SW Portland for five months, and have found both excellent instruction and camaraderie. Professor Bruno Rocha, the head instructor, is a third degree black belt who has trained BJJ for 20 years. He regularly competes in gi and no gi competitions across the world, and it's an honor to learn from someone with that caliber of experience. My daughter also trains here, and the kids classes are a nice mix of general physical activity, BJJ techniques, and instilling good values like grit and respect. Jay Stahl, the owner and a coach (he holds a purple belt), helps foster a safe and welcoming environment for adults, kids, and parents alike.
Posted 4 years agoThanks for being so welcoming! My son is loving your summer tween/teen camps and I love that you're offering such a cool, diverse range of affordable options!
