I visited other martial arts school searching for the perfect place to have my kids learn and grow with jiu-jitsu. This one was far and beyond above the rest. The coaches and professors are excellent (my son wants to be just like Coach Batman and Professor Dande “when he grows up” lol). The staff is so friendly and helpful (Maria and Chrystal are angelic). I can’t say enough great things. Our family is SO happy we joined. We will eventually have all 3 of our little ones sign up when the time is right. The price is so fair too! They include unlimited classes for a monthly fee, offer free months when you pay for multiple upfront, and they have regular “extra” events at no additional cost (movie nights, parents night out, open play gym time, self-defense for adults, and more). The benefits of jiu-jitsu are numerous. If you’re considering a program for yourself or anyone in your family, look no further!

I want to specifically give recognition to Coach Ben, he has gone above and beyond putting in time and effort into not just my journey but my whole families jujitsu journey as well. I have been doing jujitsu for 4 months now. I entered my first competition knowing I wasn’t going to have a coach in my corner, Coach Ben texted me good luck and asked me who my coach was and I told him I didn’t have one. He took it upon himself to surprise me by showing up 30 minutes before my fight to not just support me but be in my corner for the comp. I’m 40 years old starting something new along side my family and Coach Ben has said multiple times to not just myself but to my kids how proud he of all of us. If your wondering whether you can start jujitsu the answer is yes, drop into this gym you are treated like family on day one. All the professors and coach’s are great but I’m grateful Coach Ben is in my corner!

Austin that has not been said. It is a great martial arts school dedicated to spreading BJJ in a powerful, positive, and safe manner. All the instructors from Ben, Lewis, Amanda, Clifton, Evaristo, Alexandre, and the rest of the instructors are amazing and well studied/practiced in BJJ techniques. As an over 40 person, it is a fact that when practicing any sport or martial art the possibility of injury increases. However, here at Gracie Barra at South Austin safety comes first. However, it is more than just a school, it is a family, a community that really cares for your personal development through the martial art of BJJ. Furthermore, as a military veteran, I have been looking for a martial art and school where I could find a semblance of the brotherhood and structure offered in the military. I have found such a place in Gracie Barra South Austin. I highly recommend this school to any person and especially to my fellow veterans out there looking for a way to address PTSD in a healthy and productive manner. Thank you Gracie Barra South Austin!

I highly recommend Gracie Barra South Austin for whoever is interested in learning Jiu-Jitsu at any levels. The professors and coaches are not only very experienced but are also willing to help and guide you to have proper technique and have fun in training. All the students are courteous and friendly.

My daughter and I have been students at GB South Austin for a year and a half. We absolutely love this school, the professors, and the great family here. BJJ is an incredible martial art, and the team at GB South Austin make everyone feel welcome as they embark upon or continue their training. The kids classes are led by capable and patient coaches who feel very invested in the success and safety of the children students. I highly recommend GB South Austin!

Managed to train here Friday night after flying in and again on Saturday morning class and a few rolls for open mat. Nice people and skills seem right on que compared to everywhere else I’ve been. Gotta love jiu jitsu.

Gracie Barra south Austin is hands down one the best places to learn the great art of Jui-jitsu. Professor Dande is one of the best. If you want to learn top notch jui-jitsu than GB South Austin should ne first on your list.

I haven't been to Jiu-Jitsu in 4yrs and I actually trained with Professor Dande and Marcelino when I did at another south Austin location. I came here about 2months ago to rekindle my passion. I've slacked, and that's my fault, but regardless the people here are the nicest, most genuine, helpful, knowledgeable, friendly individuals you'll ever meet. Honestly not enough adjectives in the world to describe them. I wouldn't recommend any other training facility or crew than this one!

Stopped by for a class while in town for a few days and was swepped away by hospitality and friendliness by head coach Alexandre Ferreira Santos. Great instruction and inch-by-inch breakdown of techniques. Highly recommended if you are in the area.

Gracie Barra is just great. Professor Ricardo and the coaches do a great job training us and making the class entertaining and I hope my body can take it so I do not have to miss any class. This is a sport for the whole family, no matter how young or old you are.

What a great school. My fiance and I moved halfway across the country to come train here! Professor Dande ( Blackbelt Alexande Santos) loves jiujitsu. He inspires you to keep pushing and not to give up. He cares how you are growing not just as a jiujitsu practionion, but also as a person. Jiujitsu teaches and has taught me alot about myself. Perserverance, respect, inner confidence and strength through adversity are just to name a few. It has helped me through some of my toughest times in life, and always will be there. Its so much more than a work out. I encourage if you are on the line about bjj, to try it- you might find something new about yourself. If you are on the line about a school- hands down this one is it!! Im really excited about our new gym location. We now have kickboxing with Coach Brian and his wife Coach Christy! Professor Dande has been my instructor and mentor for 7 plus years and all of the compliments that have been written before and including the ones I am about to write now are only a small sample of what this man is capable of accomplishing with each one of his students. He is a phenomenal teacher with the ability to adapt his game to both big and small. He will be able to instruct all of those that walk through his doors, and he does it with open arms. Technically, is able to breakdown situations and show you the nuances that need to occur to be successful. Physically, he will make you feel like you never walked into a gym as his natural strength leaves you feeling helpless. The way he is able to talk strategy and review past video footage in order to bring the students in a new understanding is remarkable. As a mentor he tries and wants only the absolute best for each and ever person that walks through his academy doors. He gives his all in order for you to reach your full potential. He has a special way of being able to connect to anyone that walks into the room where ever he is. You can really see this at all the tournaments both large and small where literally you can lose count of all the high level competitors and other school owners that will make sure to at least say hi and reminisce about a past conversation. And on top of all of that he still goes out there and puts his money where his mouth is and competes consistently year in and year out. He has won: locally, nationally, and internationally. He knows what it takes to win and how to train others to do the exact same. You will not find a more well rounded BJJ professor. I highly recommend you try a class and you will not second guess on signing up right after....that's what I did.

It is absolutely impressive to see the dedication of Professor Dande and every coach there (like Freddy and Ricardo). They are so knowledgeable and so interested in giving the best teaching possible. My 12 year old son trains there and he enjoys it so much. He truly looks forward to going there every time for the training and for the camaraderie he feels with the other students. It is absolutely refreshing to see such pleasant atmosphere at Gracie Barra at the South Lamar location.

Professor Alexandre Ferreira Santos aka Dande is a world class instructor that encourages me to keep working hard and most importantly have fun learning jiu-jitsu. I feel empowered each time I roll because training partners genuinely want me to get better and smart. I am Social Work Officer on active duty, not only does jiu-jitsu keep me fit but also provides opportunity to build up new friendships with inspirational competitors. I don't mind driving 1.5 hours to go train at Gracie Barra South Austin (GBSA). This allows me to be part of a band of brothers that train at GBSA, which is a professional training environment. GBSA helps cultivate warrior spirit among soldiers in the Fort Hood community. In fact, GBSA generates a positive vibe; people smile a lot and give constructive feedback. Also, instructor and training partners keep safety a priority. I will definitely continue to visit GBSA for continued evolution as well as my happiness!

Best BJJ school if you're looking for good technique, to get in shape, awesome environment! I am in the Army stationed at Fort Hood TX. I travel almost 2 hours every weekend just to train there. Its very hard for me to find a school that can push the pace and enforce discipline like the military and still keep a family atmosphere but Gracie Barra South Austin definitely do the job. Would recommend this school a thousand times!

I have been in martial arts for most of my life. My family even owns a Tae Kwon Do school. In all of my nearly 20 years involved in martial arts, both as a student and from a business standpoint, I have never been to a school this good. The instructor, Professor Dande (pronounced "Dun-jee"), is the kindest, most humblest instructor I have ever met. Not only is he certified BAMF (I believe he's ranked #4 in the world at his weight), but he gives great, clear instruction, along with practical examples. He seems to honestly care for his students. I have only been here for 6 weeks (it's weird to be a complete beginner again after doing martial arts my whole life), but I'm completely hooked. Come roll with us!

My wife and I traveled to Austin from Houston this last weekend to see some friends. Part of my preparation was to find a gym where I could train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu while I was away from my home gym. I e-mail Nalei at Gracie Barra South Austin and got a very prompt response with a lot of information on the location and what I would need to bring with me. She was EXTREMELY helpful. The evening shows up for me to try out the gym so I show up a little early. Nalei meets me at the front, gives me everything I need, and sends me to get changed out before the class. The class structure was fantastic and easy-to-follow and the gym was filled with knowledgable and friendly people. It was also nice to have a lot of people of a similar level of skill to me own to practice with. Honestly, if I lived in Austin I would have signed up and made this my home gym. HIGHLY recommended.

At the age of 43 I would have never thought it possible for me to learn a new sport. I had seen what I thought to be BJJ on the UFC and was a little intimidated. This all changed after I met Professor Marcello and received my FREE lesson. He is a 4x Brazilian National Champion, a 2x World Champion and you would never guess it by his patient and unassuming personality. He really believes in his sport and the Gracie motto, "Train like a team, fight like a family" so much that he has won over my entire family and we are addicted to the sport. My children enjoy the classes as much as I do and love all the new friends they have made. If the thought has crossed you mind and you are the least bit curious, come down and meet us all at Gracie Barra South Lamar and you too will become apart of the family.

The coaches that my son briefly trained with were great, which is why I'm going with 2 stars. Everything else is awful. I'd show up with my 4-year old and would have to figure out where the rental equipment was to get him dressed myself. There was also a different coach every time we showed up. We also cancelled last year and continue to be charged every month, with me having to fight it every time. Horribly run business, go train anywhere else.
