Best place for Jiu Jitsu in jersey, Coaches are really good and extremely knowledgeable. Training partners are really helpful and it’s a super welcoming environment. I’d recommend to anyone regardless of experience or age!
Posted 1 year agoI had the opportunity to take a class with that was lead by Garry Tonon Jiu Jitsu instructor Chris. Chris is a spectacular instructor. His ability to break down complex techniques into clear steps made an immediate impact on my game. I left class not just understanding new concepts, but actually able to apply them during rolling. Chris’s attention to detail, patience, and passion for the art are evident in everything he does. No matter if you’re a beginner or a seasoned practitioner, training under Chris is an invaluable opportunity. I can’t recommend him highly enough. If you’re anywhere near Garry Tonon Jiu Jitsu, make sure to stop by
Posted 1 year agoJoined about a month and a half ago, no grappling experience but did boxing way back when. The gym is SUPER clean. The class size is smaller, which is honestly great since the instructor can keep an eye on everyone more easily. A huge shout out to instructors Andrew and Chris, they are full of knowledge and are clearly passionate about sharing it with everyone there. I think one of the more important things about this gym is the environment they foster, the instructors and students are all welcoming, chill, and helpful. Every instructor and student I’ve encountered there wants to help you get better. I haven’t had the opportunity to meet Garry Tonon, but I trust he’s cool based off of the people he trusts to run his gym.
Posted 1 year agoHad a great experience at Garry Tonon BJJ. The instructors are top-notch, and the atmosphere is super welcoming – highly recommend!
Awesome experience for all ages. Highly recommend
This gym was welcoming. The beginner class was split almost evenly men and women which was an unexpected treat. Lots of drilling and good information and tweaks for both the beginner and intermediate classes.
Great instructors; very attentive and friendly. Great place for beginners. Would highly recommend!
I've been learning at GTJJ since 2019. I'm proud to be a part of the team. High level jiu jitsu taught by incredible coaches. The instruction is broken down in a way that if you're at your first class or you've been doing the sport for 20 years you'll learn. I've loved my journey so far and look forward to the coming years and continuing to grow. If you are interested in great jiu jitsu come to GTJJ.
Great place to learn, the class is friendly and the instructors are very knowledgable and patient. I would recommend anyone who ones to get started in jiu jitsu to come here, I guarantee you won’t regret it!
Excellent facility and training came in as visitor and will certainly return anytime I’m in New Jersey
Our Kids have been in self defense/martial arts classes since a very early age… this time around we decided it was time for them to join “Jiujitsu”. They have absolutely loved every class ever since they joined back in September 2024. The coaches are very knowledgeable and active in the sport. In addition, they are great with children. They are not only very patient, but great instructors as well. Thanks guys. Highly recommended.
I moved around a lot to different states and trained in many gyms. Garry Tonon has the most elite instructors that teach techniques a lot of gyms don't go over. Plus everyone is super friendly and helpful.
I feel like I'm part of a team when I train here. The staff and students are friendly and supportive. The techniques are practiced with great attention to detail. So if you want to learn and practice grappling or just want the exercise this is the place to be. See you on the mats.
As a Rutgers student who lives on campus, I cannot recommend this BJJ gym enough to fellow students—especially if you're looking for schedule flexibility and HIGH-LEVEL instruction. I've made far faster progress than friends who have trained for a similar amount of time at other gyms, and all the credit goes to the extremely technical instructors and supportive training partners. In short: a very friendly environment with clean mats and world-class instruction.
Highly recommend Garry Tonon Jiu Jitsu! I am glad to have found them for my son who's had zero experience in any form of martial arts. They offer a free class to see if it's a fit or not. I wasn't sure what to expect but my son took to it immediately, and we were back the next day to sign up. The instructors (Andrew, Derek and Chris) are amazing and attentive with kids of all ages and I feel confident my kid's in good hands. He looks forward to his sessions and I can't be happier to see he actually enjoys learning so much about self-defense and respect in a fun safe environment. It's been 3 months and still going strong.
Amazing, skilled, patient and passionate coaches. Great, clean facility. Please note it’s nothing like your local franchise martial arts centers, so your kids will not graduate with black belt in a year and hole in your pocket. They will have to actually work for upgrades, not your wallet. And there are always fun games after work out.
My son started his Jiu Jitsu with coach Andrew. We are happy with his progress and the balance that the class has between some play/exercise at the beginning to make it fun for the kids and the actual techniques they need to learn. We have started out at the original location and moved with him to the East Brunswick location, we feel like his class is the best among others equally near us
I have been training judo and jiu-jitsu for over 20 years. I have had the pleasure of training with Garry Tonon at his academy Garry Tonon Jiu-jitsu. The instructors, Head Instructor Chris Sodbinow and others are highly skillful and extremely knowledgeable in their techniques and teaching. I am always amazed with the attention to detail provided in class. When rolling live, the level of knowledge is also displayed by the students. A willingness to learn and pay it forward is at the for front of this school. The academy is clean and the no nonsense attitude of the instructors and students presents a positive place to train, weather dropping in or signing up for lessons. I highly recommended this academy!
I joined this school about three months ago and have had an incredible experience. The gym is always super clean, instruction is top-tier, and teammates are welcoming, helpful, and kind. If you're looking for somewhere to train, this is the place.
What an amazing gym! This is my first ever combat sport and when I started almost a year ago I was very nervous. That quickly went away! All the coaches are amazing, great teachers, very passionate and caring. Al the other students I have met are so friendly and helpful. I would recommend this gym to all my friends and family, no matter the age !
I’ve been at Garry Tonon Jiu Jitsu since the beginning. It’s a great gym with a mix of age groups, belt levels, men / women. Everyone treats each other respectfully and we all improve each others game. I highly recommend it for any one starting out in Jiu Jitsu to anyone at the most experienced level. Not only do I train there, but my family trains at GTJJ. The gym recently moved to 11 Harts Lane, East Brunswick, NJ.
The new location in East Brunswick (11 Harts Lane) is amazing! Same great instruction, more space and an octagon!
Absolutely love training at Garry Tonon Jiu Jitsu! The environment is welcoming and supportive, making it perfect for practitioners of all levels. I really appreciate the high-level instruction and the focus on technique. The rolls are challenging yet fun, and I've learned so much from Garry and the team. If you're looking to improve your skills and be part of a great community, this is the place to be! Highly recommend!
My son's and I have been here since 2018. Bc of my kids over use of video games....I gave them the choice of sports or martial arts, to balance their lives. They chose martial arts. We're blessed to be part of GTJJ. Here's an email I sent to professor Garry years ago Hey professor Garry... i hope this finds you well. 1) me and the boys joined in the spring of 2018. You were in Asia at the time. You came home, and we sat down and talked about pricing for my fam. After that brief meeting, i ran home to my wife, and told my wife about how i just met a great young man. And how proud i would be, if our sons grew to be someone like this. The significance is.... I'm a very private person, and my circle is very tight. If i get impressed like this once a decade, that's a lot. 2) a couple months in, at a class you taught, during line up, you looked at the white belts and said... "look to your left. Everyone down the line are weirdos. I'm a weirdo. You are most likely a weirdo if you're in here. " When my sons were younger, they were really good at sports. Baseball, football, golf, etc., and were always eager to participate. One of them went to baseball camp, and was picked on from an older kid... calling him a weirdo. After that incident, they lost interest in sports. When i came home from your class that day, and told them the weirdo story, how Brunswick was all weirdos, they really enjoyed that... Haha. Anyways, my family appreciates you as the person you are, and we thank you for the group you have built. We wish you the best in all your endeavors. Great luck to you! .................... Fast forward to 2024.... My son was bullied in school this year. He used his BJJ training to subdue the attacker "peacefully". Anyways.... I highly recommend jiu jitsu for everyone.... Not just kids. I've been telling friends and family members for years. I won't stop, until they all try it, haha. And as for schools and teachers, and people... Garry Tonon and his school represents the best. Thanks professor!
Great facilities, people and instruction!
I really can’t say enough good things about the program at Garry Tonon Jiu Jitsu, formerly known as Brunswick BJJ. I started training here almost 9 years ago and the people that have helped me from the start are still there training and helping anyone new along their way. It just shows how dedicated everyone is at the academy from the ground up. The instructors are amazing individuals that are always there when you need them most. You are in good hands at GTJJ, whether you are a pure beginner, someone just looking to train or even compete. They have classes and skill levels to accommodate everyone, especially with their brand new training facility which has brand new mats and wall padding, & even a full sized octagon! You really can’t go wrong with at least giving one class a try. The list can go on with the amount of great things Garry Tonon Jiu Jitsu has going on, so don’t hesitate to get in contact with them and definitely do check them out at their brand new location in East Brunswick NJ!
Best coaches and amazing place train!!
Garry Tonon Jiu Jitsu is one of the most welcoming environments that will still push you to new limits. The morning class with Cruz is phenomenal and every instructor there will take time to help you evolve. Highly recommend to anyone who wants to try jiu jitsu or are already practicing. Big Up to everyone I’ve ever rolled with there. GTJJ best gym in the world.
Elite training from one of the very best to ever do it. Don’t meet me there, beat me there!! :)
I’ve been training with the coaches at Garry Tonon’s since 2018. I’ve had a very rewarding experience. I came here with zero knowledge of Jiu Jitsu. I felt welcomed and encouraged. Over the years I had learned a great deal, and gained the confidence to enter competitions. I’ve always felt very safe training in this environment. Our teams encompasses a wide range of age groups, skill sets and walks of life. We have a great time training and learning from each other. Chris Sodbinow is our head instructor. He is an excellent teacher. He has helped me tremendously in improving my Jiu Jitsu. I appreciate all the time and effort he devotes to this program. All of the coaches are amazing. I have great relationships with each of them. They are all incredibly skilled. I’m proud to call this school my home. I’ll keep coming!
I’ve been a student here since 2016 and I’ve found the level of instruction, the sincerity of the staff and the team camaraderie to be nothing less than first rate!
Great gym and really great instructors! Highly recommend
By far the best gym in the 732 hands down. Family like environment.Professor Chris instructions and technique is unmatched ... his "Legwork" and fluidity of teaching is what separates his style from any school in the area . Coaches Andrew and Christian are amazing jiu jitsu athletes that also give their own unique spin. Come see why this place is breeding champions!
The coaching staff is incredible, and the students are top notch and help foster an uplifting and inclusive environment. I've trained with this group since they were located in East Brunswick, and I hope to continue training with them for years to come.
Great gym with extremely knowledgeable instructors
World class instruction with great fellow members. 100% recommend
I have been training here for almost 2 months and I'm so happy to have come here. Professor Chris is extremely technical, a great teacher, and attentive to the students. After teaching a technique, he would observe us and address issues or mistakes we are having with the technique to ensure we got it right. These cues and details he provides are the key to developing high level jiu jitsu. It's evident that he strives to make our jiu jitsu as precise and technical as possible. Coach Andrew and Coach Christian are great teachers and highly technical as well. They explain techniques thoroughly, and they provide the little details that make the difference to ensure a technique works successfully. Also, since the academy is currently in UFC gym, part of the membership is access to the weights and exercise equipment. This is the place to be to learn high level jiu jitsu.
A premium spot for learning cutting edge jiu jitsu technique with a supportive environment for both casual hobbyists and active competitors alike.
I am just coming to the end of my first month at this school and have nothing but great things to say about this place. Coming in as a beginner I was nervous and hesitant, but the instructors and students here are both kind and helpful. They emphasize training safely, and good technique, and I truly appreciate this. I have taken classes with Christian, Chris, Andrew, Joanne, and Keith and every coach communicates effectively and instructs efficiently - so even as a beginner I am able to follow and understand. I also found their schedule to be incredibly accommodating. If you are on the fence about starting jiu jitsu, I’d highly recommend trying it at this school.
Brunswick BJJ is a world class, positive learning environment that I would highly recommend to anyone who is interested in studying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Professor Garry Tonon has created a school that welcomes the beginner as well as any experienced practitioner. His coaching staff is extremely knowledgeable and helpful also. Definitely check out this school!
Garry is awesome ! A world class athlete and instructor. Family friendly atmosphere and great kids program as well!
My boys love coming here. The instructors are great and the atmosphere is very friendly and welcoming to all ages and skill levels.
World-class instructors and super friendly atmosphere.
I can't say enough about this place. Besides the world class teaching, everyone here treats you like family. This place has really challenged my growth and I can't imagine training anywhere else.
The best Jiu Jitsu training around 💪 Worth the drive.
Great place to train with some of the best instructors on the planet!
I had the privilege of training at brunswick bjj for 10 days while I was visiting the area. Garry, Gordon and amici run great classes for all levels. You do not need to be a high level competitor to train. They welcome everybody. They are dedicated on setting you up for success in and off the mats. You will be very satisfied with detail in teaching and the passion. I would go far to say that Garry would even allow you to try a couple of classes at no risk to you financially. Give them a try it will be worth it. May even change your life for the better - forever. #OneHappyCustomer
World class level of instruction yet still has a fun, playful, family oriented atmosphere. Love this place and will continue to drive past the many other martial art academies on my way here each day.
Will scam you with a 200 a month membership and try to charge you even after you stop going. Also have ringworm and smelly mats.
