Just passed through on the way to Arizona with my children. Maurício and all of Checkmat were awesome. On top of great instruction, we felt welcome as if we were longtime students across all age brackets (11, 15, and 39)! If I wasn’t moving we would call this gym home. Thanks for a great evening of learning and rolling. Keep it up, and we hope to see you again when we pass through.

I must say, this is by far one of the best Bjj establishments you’ll come across in our area. With a strong sense of work ethic and pride by the owner and lead instructor Mauricio C., the support of all other coaches, and the family atmosphere which they foster, you are home at last. They offer a variety of programs for kids at all ages to adults at incredible affordable rates. The camaraderie among all of the students and coaches promote a unique learning environment where we all learn and grow to be a better person than we were yesterday. I have said this before and I’ll say it again, Checkmat Riverview is my 2nd home away from home.

Today I went to this gym for the first time, it reflects all the values of Checkmat, and a little more. The teacher is very accessible, friendly, very careful in every detail when teaching the technique, and making sure that one executes it correctly. The classmates are strong, fast, but careful enough to protect the opponent from injuries. I know of few places where you can practice jiu-jitsu as confidently and as safely as there.

Having started my BJJ training late in life, I'm truly blessed to be surrounded by such fine people. Having grandkids, it's great seeing the kids blossom into fine, confident humans. Thanks, Professor Mauricio, and the upper classes for a great training experience. I'm learning a lot and have never been so fit.

Been taking my son for a couple months and have been impressed by Professor Mauricio’s passion and knowledge of Jiu Jitsu. Decided to start training as well about a month ago and have had a great time. Great workout and lots of fun! Great environment and great people all around. I have no previous experience and everyone has been very helpful and patient. Highly recommended.

I visited while on vacation and everyone made me feel welcomed. The people there are great training partners and Mauricio is very hospitable. The gym is ample and clean. I definitely recommend everyone to go and visit.

The professor and other instructors are always vigilant during lessons. There are clearly established modes of acceptable behavior for students, (children and adults), parents, and other instructors. The teaching instructions, patience, and example of respect from Maricio and the team are critical to the success of the gym. Would recommend for children, adults, beginners, or advanced practitioners of jujitsu.

Amazing place with an amazing professor! The people who roll here are friendly and welcoming, as well. We have established great friendships with most of the families and individuals here and are blessed to have found such a supportive atmosphere. The professor teaches discipline and respect to the children within the children’s class, while in return, demonstrating patience and understanding equally to all students. The adult classes allow students to advance within the bjj realm, while establishing confidence within the individual.

Checkmat is an amazing gym for the whole family. Professor Mauricio Carra is professional, caring, and an incredibly talented martial artist who strives to create a disciplined, family-oriented culture amongst his students. There are several upper level students who help keep everyone safe, active and participating in the lessons. My son loves learning in this environment and my other children are excited to join as well. I encourage all children and adults to join Checkmat Riverview with Professor Carra!

I just started training here and I have been welcomed by everyone with open arms. It’s great gym for anyone who is looking to compete or just do Jiu-Jitsu as a hobby, a good mix of higher belts and lower belts. Good energy and Mauricio is a legit professor with a lot of experience. I drive 30-40 minutes to train here and it is worth it!

I stopped in to get some training while on vacation. I called Professor Mauricio to ask if I could stop by for the competition class but didn't have my gi. He was very kind, told me to stop by and provided me with a perfectly fitting clean gi. The gym was very cool(both literally and physically). Everyone made me feel at home and willing to learn. Definitely felt like home in just the 2 hours I spent there. Next time you're in Tampa or move here and need a gym, don't look any further. Oss

What a great facility to train at and such a great team to train with. Ive been with checkmat for over 2 years, have been training BJJ for just about 10, and in my travels I have never found a gym such as this! Everyone supportive of each other and great friends. Offers kids classes, fair pricing on membership, gi and nogi, culture of safety. Professor Mauricio Carra is a gold mine of knowledge and trains with and coaches each of his students every class, and besides, a great guy! You won’t want to train anywhere else when you realize the quality of the instruction and the amazing environment at checkmat riverview :) nothing but good things to say!

I have been the few lucky enough to roll with Professor Jeremy before and after he earned his black belt. To me a black belt signifies a personal accomplishment of growth and development. Jeremy is hands down the most kind and intense upper belt i have ever trained with. It is physically impossible not to grow and learn under his teaching . If you want an old school bjj pedigree under a coach who apprectes What Jiu Jitsu means and represents in it's primal form...Look no further. I have nothing to gain from this review...I have trained personally with this man and I call him my brother because He has proven without a doubt that he deserves all respect and praise. "If you are unwilling to learn..... Nobody can teach you.. If you are determined to learn.... Nobody can stop you." From. California 2 Florida CheckMat Together .

I've had the opportunity of taking a couple BJJ classes with Jeremy teaching the main technique under the eye of his black belt professor, and I have to say he's a really good coach. He's very patient, understanding, and communicates very well the concepts and techniques that are being taught I also appreciate the genuineness. If you have a chance to come check out the gym, I implore you to give it a go. You may find more than what you're looking for, perhaps a community you didn't realize you wanted or needed. It starts from the top, and the top is as good as they come.

CHECKMAT Folsom BEDA Jiu Jitsu

Jeremy is a technical, thoughtful, and welcoming Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner. He has a vast array of knowledge and a love for the art. I trusted him to lead my classes at my own academy and as one of my black belts, we will forever have a brotherly bond. I’m proud of his accomplishments and know his integrity will lead to an amazing academy. Eli Beda. Vanessa is amazing on the mat and a force to be reckoned with. She always helped me with the ladies in our academy, shared her knowledge, and nurtured women in their Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey. Together Jeremy and Vanessa offer their community a training environment that is inclusive for all men, women, and children. Brandy Beda

Professor Jeremy made it known to me when I first started at the gym, that we are a family and this is our home. He teaches us that there are more things to learn in Jiu Jitsu than guards and submissions, that there are lessons and philosophies we can apply to everything you do. We as a family treat everyone with kindness and respect with respect on and off the mats. The environment is great for practitioners of all levels, and the workouts are absolutely savage. I’m proud to be a part of the family.

I’m not sure who will see this post, but I wanted to tell anyone who looks up this Jiu Jitsu school that this is Exactly the kind of environment I recommend to anyone who wants to learn the art without being judged or looked down on in any way shape or fashion. The men and women at Checkmat Riverview, smart, polite, and humble. It makes it easy to fit in with the class no matter your skill level. The instructors are so patient, and as a beginner that patience is much needed and appreciated. Thank you

I just started attending classes and Jeremy and the rest of the crew have made me feel really welcomed. As a newbie, they have taken the time to work with and motivate me. It has been over a year and a half since I actively did BJJ, and I need a lot of work. Since joining this gym I feel highly motivated to get back on track and continue training to become better.

We love Checkmat!❣️Jeremy is by far the best coach. My daughter was one of the first kids to join and has been a member since October of 2019. She enjoys going and has built up a lot of confidence and strength. It is a great atmosphere for kids to have fun but still work on becoming their better self.

Back in September 2019, we signed our son up for BJJ. Desperate to find something to get him into that would help with his obedience and focus and am incredible thankful for professor Jeremy and his BJJ class. Jeremy shows a level of care to each and every one of his students and makes class not only about learning new techniques but also fun for all. As a parent observing each class is a blast. These kids put in a lot of hard work and watching them master these techniques is a rewarding experience. We cant thank professor Jeremy enough for all that he has done for our son.

What a great place to train! Everyone is super nice and makes you feel like family. Professor Jeremy is patient and takes his time for those who need extra attention when they can’t get a move right. He’s very keen on knowing when to speed up the learning process or slow it down if needed. I have been looking for a place to train and I’m so glad to have found Checkmat.

Very professional atmosphere with instructors who genuinely love to help and take their time with answering any questions and personally 1 on 1 showing movements to help their students understand and succeed. Jeremy & his wife Vanessa do an amazing job with making all students feel welcomed whether you’re a beginner or advanced.

Excellent atmosphere for kids and adults. The instructor and the class makes this a great experience each week. My son and I just started a few weeks ago and we feel so at home with our new team. Nothing is gimmicky either, you get real work in every class and those kids get after it!

I just moved out here in August. I was looking for a good Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school and this school had just opened up. I was pleased to find out the black belt, Jeremy, was from California and a well known school (Checkmat). I decided to try it out. I met Jeremy and I have nothing but good things to say about him. Great personality, easy going, knowledgeable, and just a good person in general. I definitely recommend the school. It’s brand new so it’s small but I know it will grow. Experience: ~ 7 years on/off Purple Belt Trained at , American Top Team, Aj Sousa’s , Atos

Not a good gym for kids. Coach allows small children to be bullied by older children on the mat. It happened to my son several times. Brought the situation to the coach’s attention, but nothing was done. Tried to talk to the parents, and they thought it was funny. When it happened a third time, I confronted the parents of the older child and it got heated, yet nothing was done to the child or family who instigated the situation. A good BJJ coach doesn’t allow small children to be bullied by older kids who are like 4-5 years older than they are. Don’t take your kids here. It is not safe for them. Edit: no one ever threatened anyone's child. I asked the child to stop talking to my child, and when I asked the parents to intervene they laughed and told me not to talk to their child. I told them to do something about her then and to leave my son alone. How was I supposed to tell you about what happened when you were not there. You were traveling. I told you once I was able and when it happened a second time, and I expected you to respond and do something then, no wait. Since you waited, the child continued to bully mine throughout training which he then told me about after class. You should have done something then instead of allowing it happen again. You didn't, so this is on you and your lack of attention and care. You can lie to try and protect yourself, which just shows that you prioritize your image over my child to protect a bully in your own gym.

Extremely disappointed with the people who run this place. The kids class is way too big and the 4 year olds are on the mat with 9-10 yr olds. Very disorganized when it’s time to partner up since the age ranges are too wide. My kid ends up standing around waiting for a partner his age or just playing since there are not enough teachers. And if your small kid is being consistently being picked on by the older kids, you will not find any support from the teacher. I would advise you try a more established gym that’s more organized. We checked out other gyms and saw how professional and organized the kids classes were. All the kids seem to be very respectful of others. Unfortunately, you will not find it at Checkmat.
