My family loves the quality of jiu jitsu here. All the instructors are so knowledgeable. Especially the owner Eli. His 30+ years of experience and training are worked class. Amazing kids program for my my Four kids. They want to be here all the time because it’s so family friendly. We highly recommend
My 5 year old grandson and I have been training at Beda Jiu Jitsu for about 6 months and absolutely love it! The school has a very family-oriented environment that is welcoming to people of all ages, backgrounds and athletic abilities. The tuition structure is affordable for those wanting to enroll multiple family members.
The youth classes are a lot of fun while teaching the kids self-defense, respect, and discipline. My grandson's confidence and physical capabilities have improved tremendously.
The adult classes are very well coached. The black belts are friendly and helpful, always willing to share their knowledge and skills. I have found my fellow students and training partners to be very respectful and mindful of safe training.
Last year I was in my search for a BJJ academy for my 5 year old. I found Beda here in Folsom and what an absolute great place to train and learn. So much so I joined as a family group, attending myself and now have both my boys involved (6 and 4 now). We have also made friends for the kids that attend birthday parties outside of the academy, a testament to the culture here.
This academy has been amazing! It perfectly combines a family-friendly atmosphere with world-class jiu-jitsu. Coming from an old-school academy in San Diego, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but Eli’s Brazilian mindset and technical instruction blew me away.
The team is full of legit competitors, but it’s not intimidating—everyone is welcoming and supportive. Brandy and Eli make it feel like more than just a gym; it’s a true community. Whether you’re new or experienced, this is the place to be!
I am new to Jiu-jitsu and started here about a year ago. What a great journey its been. I definitely recommend this gym to anyone thinking about starting or switching gyms. Eli, Brandy, and the other Black belts that assist teaching have been very helpful and sincere, leading and teaching us on our journey. Also the gym has a great friendly atmosphere without the big egos. Lots of talented upper belts that are seemingly always willing to answer my relentless questions.
We decided to try Brazilian jujitsu for my active 7 year old. I knew several other parents who recommended Checkmat Folsom.
Our experience from the time we walked in the door for the trial has been nothing but positive. They start everyone with a 3 day trial to attend classes and make sure it's a good fit. They provide the gi and belt for those in the trial so you don't need to commit purchasing ahead of time.
My daughter absolutely loved it right off the bat and looked forward to going every single time. We've been there a little over a month now and are still loving it. The instructors are fantastic and everyone has fun. There's a good mix of discipline and fun mixed in each training.
If you are looking for a great place to train or have your kids join this is definitely it.
We absolutely love Checkmat BJJ in Folsom! Both of our boys, aged 7 and 4, attend classes here, and it's been such a rewarding experience for our family.
Our oldest son has grown so much in confidence and skill since joining. Watching him prepare for his first tournament is a testament to the fantastic training and encouragement he receives at Checkmat.

My son has been training here the past 6 yrs. There is no better BJJ academy in the area. The knowledge that Eli shares is effective and truly priceless. Eli shares endlessly. He is a professor by heart and cares so much for this Beautiful Art. Eli and Brandy have established a home for all those that wish to train. They are family and have been in folsom for over 10 years. Don’t hesitate to drop by and chat a min, Eli and Brandy will take the time to answer your questions always. Here you will train and gain knowledge that will last a life time. They are truly special.
It is a great place to train. Everyone is welcoming and friendly. Professors Eli and Brandy are immensely supportive and caring people, who care more about your progression and growth than just about business. This is the jiu-jitsu gym I currently train at, and I absolutely love it. The friends I train with are amazing, and the head coach teaches so well. Most importantly, the gym has a large number of members, so I get to train with a variety of people. I highly recommend it!

Before leaving Checkmat in Northridge, I had to look for another Checkmat in Folsom. Low and behold there is a Checkmat Folsom. My kids and I joined and the wife approved. It’s a great place to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. In the kids classes the kids are focused from the moves Professor Eli teaches. There are adult and other students helping professor Eli with the kids to ensure they are doing the moves correctly or if they need motivation or stuck on any moves they need help with. As for the adults class, everyone in class is helpful and there is no ego. There’s multiple bathrooms, change rooms, lots of space to train, lots of room for family to sit and watch. Jiu jitsu will change your life, it’s the source.
Absolutely love this gym. We started here as self defense is required for my daughter. She was struggling for a bit and then got her 1st stripe and she has excelled since. We love all the coaches and the owners both spend some 1 on 1 time with the kids either showing them moves or just to chat and encourage them to do better and be better.
This by far the best place to bring your child or the whole family for that matter. A ton of thought and safety goes into the instruction and guidance of every student. Truly a cultural and connective blessing for all!

I highly recommend Beda Jiu Jitsu. Our family of 6 has been members there for over a year. The owners and coaches are very knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate. To us, going to Beda Jiu Jitsu feels like our second home where we are with family. They offer a variety of classes such as Gi, No Gi, Open Mat, and Functional Training. I have trained in many gyms around the world and I can say that this is not just a gym for jiu jitsu, this is a place where you will feel the atmosphere of family and friends. No matter what your level is, come and see for yourself the support and high quality of teaching.
This is more like a family than I expected. We tried out a lot of different places, but this gym just felt like the right fit. Everyone is so welcoming and encouraging. Our boys love coming here and so do we. It’s amazing watching your children’s confidence grow while they have fun! We are Beda BJJ for life!!!
My kids have been attending BJJ here for nearly a year, and we love it! Our kids look forward to class and miss it dearly when they can't make it. The coaches are plentiful, accessible and very knowledgeable, who have even given extra time to help our kids when needed. Our kids have excelled because of their care and the care of helpful students.
I have often discussed with other parents of the students about how good the community is at CHECKMAT. I personally believe that Eli and Brandy have created a purposeful, approachable, and family-friendly environment. My baby has grown to love it there too!

It’s been an honor coming here for the last 10 months. The instructors are very welcoming and treat you like family, and training with them is like no other place. They keep a clean studio and are very organized. Definitely recommend 11/10
Checkmat Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is not just a gym—it's our sanctuary, our second home. Enrolling our whole family in the family membership several years ago was one of the best decisions we've ever made. From the moment we stepped onto the mats, we were embraced by a community of support and camaraderie.
The classes, tailored for both kids and adults, have not only helped us improve our physical fitness and self-defense skills but have also instilled in us a sense of discipline and resilience that extends far beyond the gym walls. As a woman, the women's self-defense class holds a special place in my heart, providing invaluable tools and confidence to navigate challenging situations.
But beyond the techniques and workouts, it's the instructors who have truly become our second family. Their unwavering dedication, patience, and encouragement have empowered us to push our limits and achieve goals we never thought possible. This place has not only improved my own personal self confidence but the dynamic I have with my family as well. This BJJ gym has been a true treasure for myself and my family. I’ve trained at multiple gyms and haven’t found a school where the instructors and students are more skilled. And more importantly, the head instructor and associate instructors have created a welcome and caring environment, so whatever your BJJ goals are, competition, self defense, personal improvement, you will find it here. When you join this gym, you will learn BJJ and become part of a loving family.
Best BJJ environment possible, all students are super nice and the master and owner very skilled (a legit brazilian who trains and give all the warm ups and drills before rolling). I feel home at this place and whatever and whenever you feel stressed from daily basis, you're going to feel release after walkout from there.

Beda bjj, is a haven to people from all walks of life. People who would never associate with each other become family, and Eli and Brandy welcome them with open arms. I drive over 40 minutes each way to attend this gym, and have been for quite a number of years now. My kids train in the kids classes as well. The owners are caring people with integrity, kindness and sincere love. They have fostered an environment that is built for the family. When you train here, you truly feel like a family.
