    This review is specific for the kids classes from a parent. As a family joining CheckMat with no previous martial arts background, CheckMat has exceeded our expectations. From day one, the instructors have each been welcoming and fair to all kids in the program. There is no question that the instructors all enjoy teaching jiujitsu to children of different skill levels and ages, it’s definitely a passion of theirs and because of that, the kids safety and instruction is tailored to challenge each kid on an individual basis. As a parent, watching your children develop life skills, gain confidence, improve their fitness, respect others, enjoy competition, and have fun/laugh at the same time is all you can ask for - and that we get with every class we send our kids to. We are extremely happy with our experience at CheckMat and would recommend it to others looking for a challenging and supporting activity for their family.

    I have been training martial arts half my life, and Checkmat Buena Park is one of the most authentic jiujitsu schools around. I have been here 5 years and the team has become a family to me. Professor Robynho is a 4° Black Belt from Brazil and has amazing knowledge and skills as a practitioner and most importantly as a coach. He puts his heart and soul into teaching his students, and it really shows. The culture at the gym is great vibes and hard training. They offer beginner classes, early morning classes, nogi, as well as girls only and kids jiujitsu. Come check it out and visit us on the mats!!

    Where do I start. Before training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I was lost, angry, and naive navigating throughout this crazy world. However, under Professor Robynho’s guidance and instruction I have developed into a young man with discipline, direction, and problem solving capabilities. In the end, learning this beautiful martial art has taught me more than fighting.

    Checkmat Buena park feels like home. I have been blessed to have found this gym. The people and the atmosphere are 2nd to none. I am able to take privates with Professor Ronnie Holmes – and it has been life changing. Anyone starting or looking to progress – I could not imagine being paired with a better person to educate and train with! Not only did I find hands down one of the best instructors/professors in my life… but I gained a brother. I am currently a white belt, but I plan on making my whole journey with Professor Ronnie and all of the Checkmat Family! Thank you guys for everything.
