We've had our 8yr old attending this gym for over two years now. The professor's care! Not just about your child's progress on the mat, but about bigger things like discipline, focus, and team work. The schedule is mostly set, and you attend as much or as little as you want (price stays the same, you can have your athlete practice as much as four times a week). For multi-sport families like ours, this flexibility is great. Like anything, you get what you put in. We're thrilled to call this gym home, and our 6yo is just now getting started. We highly recommend.

I first started training here about 3 years ago and it’s the best hobby I’ve ever picked up. Everyone here is extremely friendly and welcoming. I love the old school hard training philosophy. Everything is earned here. It’s an academy run purely for the love of jiu-jitsu and Professor Alex and the rest of the coaches are excellent instructors.

I can’t say enough good things about Carlson Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu! For over 3.5 years, we’ve been bringing our son here, and we absolutely love the structure and discipline they instill in their students. From the moment we walked in, we felt welcomed and part of a supportive community. Professors Alex and Alicia are truly gems; their expertise and passion for BJJ shine through in every class. They have a unique ability to break down complex techniques into manageable steps, making it easy for both beginners and advanced students to thrive. The staff is fantastic—always encouraging and ready to help with any questions or concerns. The atmosphere is friendly and inclusive, enhancing the learning experience. Our son has not only improved his skills on the mat but has also gained confidence and respect for himself and others. If you’re looking for a place to train, whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned practitioner, Carlson Gracie BJJ Gilbert is the place to be. Highly recommend!

I look forward to training myself, but for the past year and a half I have been taking my two boys to this school and have had nothing but positive experiences. During this time, I’ve been amazed at how much my boys (7yo and 9yo) have matured, as they’re faced with tiny challenges every single day they walk on the mat. Alex and Alicia, know their stuff, and know exactly how to push these kids to get the best out of them. A very important lesson these kids need to learn is that the world does not revolve around them, some grow into adults without ever learning. Alex and Alicia, understand this quite well, and they provide a safe, controlled environment for kids to experience this first-hand. Thank you both!

Before joining the team, I had no training in any combat sports, and didn't participate in any sports in high school. I decided I wanted to try BJJ and see if my kids would also want to join. I chose Carlson Gracie Team AZ because it's less than a mile from my house. When I first inquired about joining, I emailed via the website. Profesora Alicia reached out to the phone number I had provided and gave me all the information over the phone for the dates and times of class. She also let me know that there is a free trial week to see if we wanted to train in BJJ. I brought my daughters in for the kids class, and when my younger daughter saw the kids hit the mat she started crying. Profesora Alicia comforted her by telling her not to worry, she can just watch for the day. My older daughter participated begrudgingly (she was only doing it because I promised to put her in volleyball if she tried). They both did not want to continue. The same day, I also signed up for the trial class. They didn't have any extra gis on hand, but another member had an extra in his car and straight up gave it to me along with a bag. I was very grateful though it was a bit large for me. I accidentally pulled the string out of the gi pants the first day while putting them on which was a little embarrassing. Once we started learning, I really liked how well everything was explained even if I didn't soak in all the information about technique they were explaining to me. I went to four sessions over the trial week. Each day I left sore, but was encouraged to come back. The following week, I brought my son. He was only 4 at the time, but they let him participate anyways. He was very distracted by all that was going on, so he didn't pay close attention or quite understand what to do. For those reasons, they asked me to let him grow a little bit and start kindergarten before bringing him back. They also recommended tumbling lessons in the meantime. He still looks forward to coming back to learn. After his session, I signed up to be part of the team because I liked the community, felt welcomed, and wanted to continue learning self-defense all while getting a good workout. I wont go into details about the prices, but I'd say the cost of starting and maintaining membership was worth the investment for me. I've been going about three times a week for almost four months, and it's really improved my mood, fitness, and energy levels. It's very challenging for me, but I think some of the greatest things in life challenge you. If you're even remotely curious about the sport, come and try the free trial. If you come with respect, you'll be given respect.
