We've had our 8yr old attending this gym for over two years now. The professor's care! Not just about your child's progress on the mat, but about bigger things like discipline, focus, and team work. The schedule is mostly set, and you attend as much or as little as you want (price stays the same, you can have your athlete practice as much as four times a week). For multi-sport families like ours, this flexibility is great. Like anything, you get what you put in. We're thrilled to call this gym home, and our 6yo is just now getting started. We highly recommend.
I first started training here about 3 years ago and it’s the best hobby I’ve ever picked up. Everyone here is extremely friendly and welcoming. I love the old school hard training philosophy. Everything is earned here. It’s an academy run purely for the love of jiu-jitsu and Professor Alex and the rest of the coaches are excellent instructors.
I can’t say enough good things about Carlson Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu! For over 3.5 years, we’ve been bringing our son here, and we absolutely love the structure and discipline they instill in their students. From the moment we walked in, we felt welcomed and part of a supportive community. Professors Alex and Alicia are truly gems; their expertise and passion for BJJ shine through in every class. They have a unique ability to break down complex techniques into manageable steps, making it easy for both beginners and advanced students to thrive. The staff is fantastic—always encouraging and ready to help with any questions or concerns. The atmosphere is friendly and inclusive, enhancing the learning experience. Our son has not only improved his skills on the mat but has also gained confidence and respect for himself and others. If you’re looking for a place to train, whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned practitioner, Carlson Gracie BJJ Gilbert is the place to be. Highly recommend!
I look forward to training myself, but for the past year and a half I have been taking my two boys to this school and have had nothing but positive experiences. During this time, I’ve been amazed at how much my boys (7yo and 9yo) have matured, as they’re faced with tiny challenges every single day they walk on the mat. Alex and Alicia, know their stuff, and know exactly how to push these kids to get the best out of them. A very important lesson these kids need to learn is that the world does not revolve around them, some grow into adults without ever learning. Alex and Alicia, understand this quite well, and they provide a safe, controlled environment for kids to experience this first-hand. Thank you both!
Great place for discipline, focus and technique, you won’t find elsewhere. Great comraderie.
Before joining the team, I had no training in any combat sports, and didn't participate in any sports in high school. I decided I wanted to try BJJ and see if my kids would also want to join. I chose Carlson Gracie Team AZ because it's less than a mile from my house. When I first inquired about joining, I emailed via the website. Profesora Alicia reached out to the phone number I had provided and gave me all the information over the phone for the dates and times of class. She also let me know that there is a free trial week to see if we wanted to train in BJJ. I brought my daughters in for the kids class, and when my younger daughter saw the kids hit the mat she started crying. Profesora Alicia comforted her by telling her not to worry, she can just watch for the day. My older daughter participated begrudgingly (she was only doing it because I promised to put her in volleyball if she tried). They both did not want to continue. The same day, I also signed up for the trial class. They didn't have any extra gis on hand, but another member had an extra in his car and straight up gave it to me along with a bag. I was very grateful though it was a bit large for me. I accidentally pulled the string out of the gi pants the first day while putting them on which was a little embarrassing. Once we started learning, I really liked how well everything was explained even if I didn't soak in all the information about technique they were explaining to me. I went to four sessions over the trial week. Each day I left sore, but was encouraged to come back. The following week, I brought my son. He was only 4 at the time, but they let him participate anyways. He was very distracted by all that was going on, so he didn't pay close attention or quite understand what to do. For those reasons, they asked me to let him grow a little bit and start kindergarten before bringing him back. They also recommended tumbling lessons in the meantime. He still looks forward to coming back to learn. After his session, I signed up to be part of the team because I liked the community, felt welcomed, and wanted to continue learning self-defense all while getting a good workout. I wont go into details about the prices, but I'd say the cost of starting and maintaining membership was worth the investment for me. I've been going about three times a week for almost four months, and it's really improved my mood, fitness, and energy levels. It's very challenging for me, but I think some of the greatest things in life challenge you. If you're even remotely curious about the sport, come and try the free trial. If you come with respect, you'll be given respect.
Second home. Great community like one big family. Number 1 competition in Arizona
Ive been training here for a while now and this is an amazing family business that is always family friendly. Professor Alecia was holding a small baby so Dad could drill the other day. I love supporting this establishment.
My daughters and I have been attending this academy for over 6 years. Over that time this academy has become a second home for all of my family. As a protective father, I love the facts that students are challenged daily and that my daughters have developed a significant amount of grit. Even though that sounds like this academy might be harsh and tough, I can tell you that the coaches and staff are amazing at striking the right balance between “coaching” and having fun. I’ve seen how kids really begin to enjoy what they are doing when they see the rewards of their hard work. This academy competes regularly in National tournaments when they come to Arizona and almost always gets 1st place as an academy. There are multiple World Champions that have come out of this academy. My family and I are very proud to be a part of the Carlson Gracie legacy and family.
I have been lucky enough to train at this academy for the past 2.5 years, but knew immediately it was for me. The academy cultivates growth for the knowledge/practicality of jiu jitsu, as well as life. It can be a learn at your own pace (train when it's convenient), a fun way to stay in shape for adults, to training for a world championship. All coaches, and staff are completely professional with their lessons and are comfortable teaching children, teenagers and adults to their competency. My daughter has also been training with Carlson Gracie Gilbert for close to two years and have seen constant improvements in her skills, as it pertains to jiu jitsu, but also in her life. The kids classes are well structured, organized and geared towards accountability for you efforts and actions. With the help of this academy Alex Sandoval, Alicia Sandoval and Alex Sandoval Jr have helped guide my daughter to the correct pathway of life with their daily teachings. I get her in there as much as humanly possible just to get the successful rub that this gym oozes. A google review doesn't quite cut my gratitude, but it's a start.
I’ve been a student at Carlson Gracie Gilbert since i was 11 years old. I am now turning 16 this year and I could not imagine training at any other gym. During these past five years at this academy I not only learned jiu jitsu, I learned valuable life lessons from Professor Alex and Alecia that I will remember for the rest of my life. This community is one of the best all of us look out for each other and the people I have met are like my second family. We are taught to take care of each other and although on the mat you’re alone everyone helped you get there by supporting you or training you to step out on the mat and do the best you can. We are also taught that you’re biggest opponent is yourself and you are your biggest enemy. The academy prepares us by training us mentally and physically which not only helps in jiu jitsu but in real life situations. This academy is my second home and i’m so grateful to be able to be able to train here. During covid I struggled with some family issues which resulted with my father no longer in my life. With all of this going on Coach Alex was by my side the whole time and he cared for me and talked me through things which really helped me more than anyone could understand. He taught me to persevere even when times get tough or hard. He guides me through life and has helped me with my jiu jitsu journey. He disciplined me, taught me respect, and made me become an overall better person. This is why I consider him a father figure and I am so grateful and lucky to have him as my coach. His dedication towards all of his student is unlike any other. He cares for all of us and trains us to be champions and only wants the best for all of us. I was a shy and fragile person before I started here but this gym has helped pushed me out of my comfort zone. They helped me to be able to stand up for myself and learn how to persevere. Ive learned to be tough and keep pushing to reach my goals. I am so appreciative of the opportunities Professor Alex has given me through jiu jitsu that helped me grow as an athlete. I became more and more comfortable stepping out on the mat with the help of my coaches and teammates, which eventually helped me to go out and win one of the biggest tournaments, the IBJJF Pan American Championships. I had an indescribable amount of support from my second family. I could not be more thankful for the person I have become today because of Professor Alex and Alecia’s help.
My whole family trains here and we love it! (Family of six). I love that I can come in the morning and train with my husband and then bring my kids by later in the afternoon for their classes (ages 14-5). Being able to train every day is unheard of at other gyms, but here you're welcome to come to as many classes and open mats as you'd like. The kids class is awesome, they train your kids on excellent self defense, they train them to be able to compete well and also help with their self esteem and mental toughness. One of the best kids class I've seen, it's tough so that our kids are built tough and able to withstand difficult situations at school or in life in general. Having been here for over three years now, I can honestly say they've become our AZ family. If you're another woman looking to train, come and train here, you'll love the training and friendliness of all your fellow teammates, I can vouch for that! Love Carlson Gracie AZ! Oss!
Professor Alex is the real deal! Come learn Jiu Jitsu from the best. Family environment with an amazing curriculum!
Visiting from NV and was wanting to keep up on my training. Was welcomed by Alex and his entire team on and off the mats. Alex is a wealth of knowledge and pushes his team to become better. Although anxiously sitting in the car prior to practicing with a new team , when finished training I left the gym with a big smile. If you are looking for a place to call home away from home then this is it
My daughter has been going here since June. One of the best schools in the world. Comparatively, their white belts are more advanced than the grey belts as far as kids go. And the wins and trophies speak for themselves.
I had a great time training at this school! Everyone was very friendly and supportive and the teaching was very high caliber! I would highly recommend this school to anyone who is thinking of trying BJJ!
What an incredible BJJ Academy. I traveled out to Arizona for a wedding and needed to sneak in some training. Professor Sandoval made me feel welcome immediately and made sure I rolled with every student. The facility is huge and very clean. All the belts were advanced and technical at every level. And 6 minute rounds for over an hour in the heat?! Epic workout and I learned a ton. Thanks again!
Best place in the area. Very supportive training atmosphere, and attentive, experienced instructors. This place is a blessing to the city of Gilbert.
Great gym. Great people. All of the 5 star reviews make sense.
Thank you CarlsonGracirTeam for taking my nephew in . He loves the toughness in this team. Highly recomend.
After training at another gym for several years, our son switched to CGT. The only regret I have is that we didn’t join sooner. While the prior gym gave him a great foundation, he’s grown in a short amount of time. Coach Alex goes above and beyond just coaching BJJ. He coaches these kids in life and holds them to standards you will not find these days. He provides a tough and rigorous program that you’d likely not find anywhere else. Yes, he cares about his business, but he cares about his students more and it shows. He has excellent assistant coaches that are set at a higher standard to what I expect other gyms have. Thank you, CGT!
I spent 5 years after moving to the Phoenix area looking for a new BJJ team to call home. After hopping from school to school to school...I found it. Excellent instruction, excellent environment.
I have known Professor Alex since '88 and he is still the same highly motivated person he was back then. He will push you beyond what you thought your potential was and then push you some more. He will never give up on you as long as you don't give up on yourself. Go in with a good attitude and he will turn it into something even more positive.
Like most of my posts on YELP, I only give a 1 star (which zero should be an option) or a 5. And Carlson Gracie Gilbert is way beyond a 5 ( six should be an option ). Fortunately for us, we were recommended to this academy...and to be honest, we had no idea what jui jitsu was all about. But holy cow we are all in. Our son has been attending for 3 years and his self confidence is remarkable. For those reading this review, do your research and learn what jui jitsu is about. Then go see Coach Alex and Alicia at this Academy. This isn't the type of place where you can just pay for a stripe or belt color. You have to earn it. They teach the kids personal responsibility, confidence, and of course, defense. The other students and families are very friendly and welcoming. I trust the staff and the other family members 100%.
This is a great place for structure, discipline and self defense. The coaching is second to none. I am a father of 2 girls that train and compete with this facility and I can’t explain enough how much better I feel knowing they will have the confidence and ability to defend themselves when I’m not around.
As a Jujitsu novice I was impressed by both the quality of the participants and the quality of the Staff.
This place was a great experience. The team is really friendly and helpful to those looking to get into Jiu Jitsu. High quality facility matched with people welcoming to visitors and new members.
Went to Arizona for the weekend and requested the professor for a visit. We were obliged and was greeted with kindness and friendship. Upon walking in we noticed how clean the gym and the bathrooms were. The professor was very friendly and professional. Our experience was everything we had expected. The kids jujitsu class was structured and built to be champions. My family and had the best experience.
I started at this gym a year ago now and I love it. My husband and my son have been training here as well. It is very family oriented and a great place to come and learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It is a very welcoming environment for women to come and learn too. Professor Alex and Alicia really care about you and want to help you succeed. I was really nervous to try it out but everyone there made it a great experience and continue to do that every time I go train. I highly recommend!
Very glad I found this gem of a jiu-jitsu academy in Gilbert. Instruction is world class and done in a friendly environment. The members are driven and helpful. If you’re looking for self defense or just want a good workout that can’t be simulated- this is the place!!
I’ve been training here for a little over 2 years now and I’m so glad that I found this place. The coaches and team are amazing. Everyone here is super helpful and truly wants to see you succeed. Not to get all cheesy, but the lessons I’ve learned on the mats have also helped me grow off the mats as well. And for that I’m super grateful.
Carlson Gracie has been home to my 4 kids for almost 6 months. My kids genuinely love and respect their coaches. Prof. Alex, Prof. Alicia, and all the assistant coaches are exceptional at teaching kids all the technical aspects of Jiujitsu skills. They drill and drill until it becomes second nature muscle memory to even my 5 yr old. Its amazing to watch their quick progression over time. Technical skills are great, but they drill life lessons into these kids too... resilience, respect, responsibility, and how to walk through life being good people is what I love the most. When picking the right gym it's important to do your research. Look it up! Carlson Gracie kids win at tournaments! There's a reason why.
Cant say enough good things about this academy. Not your typical glorified babysitting belt factory where you pay extra for every promotion, everything is earned over here. Coach Alejo and all the other coaches aren't like family, they are family. The work ethic and life lessons that are taught are priceless, learning the art of BJJ is a bonus.
Best decision we’ve made ! Carlson Gracie Team az was highly recommended by a family friend. Clean , Structured, and family oriented environment. Exceptional training , Prof. Alex, Prof. Alicia and other coaches who step in to share their knowledge are all amazing! Very grateful for our son to have the opportunity to train under this linage. Would highly recommend!
Great school, clean, friendly, safe, really knowledgeable instruction. Owners myself and coworkers go train with their team while we were in town on business. Alicia split the class into newer students and experienced so everyone got the right level of instruction. If your looking for a place to train in Gilbert this is the spot..... and Mugsy is adorable and well behaved.
If you are lucky enough to train here you know it’s a special place. Great instruction and a great place to make friends. Careful though, you may find this addictive.
Anamzing place; great instruction, good for families, clean and welcoming. Ive been training a long time and they have everything I was looking for. Consider it a second home
Great people to train with and great stories attitudes all around. No egos and good quality people.
You won't find better training , atmosphere, or sense of family anywhere else. Alex and Alicia are committed to their members/team and it shows in every class. If you want the real deal....look no further!!!!
It is a place that is family oriented. After being there for a few days you become family with everyone. If you want a place to workout, learn self-defense, or just try something new I highly recommend Carlson Gracie Jiu Jitsu. They're encouraging and loving to all. Love them and recommend them.
If you’re looking for a sport for you or your kids, Carlson Gracie Team Gilbert AZ/Bjj & Family Fitness is the place for you! The coaches are excellent, but tough. They teach proper technique and skills, while helping mold your child’s character with honesty, integrity and personal accountability. Professor Alex and Professora Alicia are in this business for the right reasons. This gym isn’t about getting paid! It’s all about the love of the sport. There is no such thing as “nickle & dimeing” you here. No extra cost for belt promotions. No testing for the next level. Once you prove you know the moves, they promote you. Period. Come test out the family atmosphere. They let you come for a week to try it out, with ZERO pressure to sign up!!! Score!!!! All the coaches are fantastic at teaching grit, endurance, strength, skill, confidence, character, and values for kids, teenagers and adults! They continually offer constructive feedback and positive, encouraging motivation to keep them going. Try it!! You won’t regret it!
Our oldest daughter started going here about 5 months ago. She had been in karate with a couple of different places but it wasn't challenging her. We brought her here and I can not say enough about it. She has really grown in just the last 5 months. It is a family environment and she has developed some really good friendships. The coaches are really involved, offering feedback and encouragement. Our youngest daughter saw how much her sister liked it and asked to join also.
I began training 6 months ago at Carlson Gracie Gilbert and within those 6 months, I have made numerous friends and learned many skills. Everyone at this gym is so friendly and willing to help. It is truly a family. Professor Alex is an amazing teacher and makes it a priority to teach us about the Carlson Gracie lineage. I highly recommend Carlson Gracie Gilbert!
Is a great place for discipline and respect. Love the atmosphere, if you are looking for an extended family environment, this is the place. The support from Alex, Mark and Alicia makes this Academy on the higher end from others.the Academy is set to limited space which makes it special to be part of it, I can not thank the members enough for the positive influence that my children have.
I was only in town visiting family and the nice people at Carlson Gracie BJJ not only let me train there, but also helped me prepare for an upcoming tournament. Everyone was super friendly and they had an excellent conditioning program. I highly recommend this gym for its training and atmosphere.
We have been members of this Academy for a little under 2 years and we cannot rave about it enough. The most welcoming environment for the whole family, from the little ones, through adults. The instruction is heads above any other we have ever seen and everyone is treated like family. The support from Professor Alejo and the other coaches is what sets this Academy apart from all the rest. The members and their individual strengths are celebrated and encouraged, truly a TEAM environment. It is hard to explain in a review how wonderful this academy is, you have to experience it to truly understand.
This academy is clean and family oriented. Professor Alex excels at helping his students grow and understand the techniques. You won't find a better place to learn and train Brazillian Jiu-jitsu. There are no egos here.
If you are interested in learning jiu jitsu, this is a great place to do it! Professor Alex and his wife are great teachers. The culture is incredible. Come on in and give it a try!
Carlson Gracie Gilbert offers solutions and helps you get results !!! Alex and Alicia are top notch gym owners with a dedication to all their customers!! If you are looking for ❤️Physical Fitness ❤️Nutrition and Wellness ❤️Performance and Skills ❤️Sense of Family and Community Support Look no further you've found the RIGHT place!
Regardless if you are looking to get in shape, bully proof your kids, compete or learn self defense you can get it all here. I came here from a different BJJ school and was immediately accepted by everyone. What makes this place strong is our solid lineage and family atmosphere.
About a year ago, my wife and I decided to look into Jiu Jitsu schools for our then 7 and 11 year-old daughters. We went to the Gilbert Carlson Gracie Academy during a kid's class to check it out and really liked the instructor and the energy of the class in general. Our girls tried the class the following night and I couldn't believe how respectful and helpful the other kids were to the newcomers. Kids being kids, I fully expected my girls to be shown exactly where they stood in the pecking order during live rolling (sparring), but the other students were nothing but helpful and welcoming. It was very clear that somebody was doing something right with these kids. Within a week, all three of us were members. One year later, my daughters are being taught respect for authority and their peers, how to work hard and achieve goals, and of course, they're learning how to defend themselves. The instructors and other members are like family at this point and we couldn't be happier with our decision to join the Carlson Gracie Team.
Great place to train at. Definitely worth trying out. Professor Sandoval is unbelievable teacher. This place has a positive family
My wife, two kids and myself have been training here for almost 3 years. The atmosphere is very family oriented and everyone here feels like family. The kids program is top notch; very tough and kids are expected to be respectful and work hard but not just at training but at home. Aside from jiujitsu, Professor Alex and coach Alicia address the importance of behavior at home and take the time to explain the importance of being model citizens.
5 stars all around. From the first class it has felt like one giant family. Everyone is willing to teach, and learn, from each other. I’m looking forward to growing with everyone! Thank you Professor Alex! Oss!
Coach Papi is a incredible expert black belt instructor and friend- clean facility- great students - great place to visit when I travel
If your looking for a traditional Jiu-jitsu school where history and lineage are a point of pride then look to further. This academy has phenomenal instructors who have an in treat in your success. Not only that but there is a true sense of family here. Check it out!
If you are interested in learning BJJ, this is easily the best place start. Everyone here is very welcoming and they strive on bettering your skills and understanding of jiu jitsu. There is a very strong aura of union within the academy that you will feel very much a part of during your training. Be warned: even though you think you might just "give it a try once or twice," you will more than likely end up loving it so much that you will have to buy a couple of shelves for your tournament trophies in the near future.
This is my home academy, my team, and my happy place. I am always excited to come back for more. As part of the Carlson Gracie Team family, there's a cohesive philosophy in their training and style. The coaches are phenomenal teachers and vetted practitioners who are invested in your "Jiujitsu career;" and the team becomes a reflection of that; helping each other through the thick and thin of training. I could not have progressed as I have without them. If you want to learn to fight, train hard and have fun with good people and solid competitors, this is the place.
My son has trained for years so I've experienced a lot of different personalities and coaches, so when people ask me about where to take their kids I always suggest they go meet Alex and Alicia. Great people, great coaches, great bjj lineage.
There is no doubt I made the right choice in my decision to train with Coaches Alex, Alicia & Carlson Gracie Team! As the 'old man' on the mats everyone is quite accommodating without being patronizing. This helps make training challenging & enjoyable.
In the first few weeks I already know how to defend myself against a 200 pound man. This will show you great techniques and the coach is very knoweledgable! If youre willing to work hard this is the place!
Coach Alex and Alicia are awesome! Everyone is very welcoming, and my 3 kids (8 yr, 7yr, and 6yr) had a blast learning too! I would recommend this gym to anyone wanting to learn BJJ in an awesome environment.
Started training with the Sandovals and Carlson Gracie Team about a year and a half ago. Since day one, was hooked. Not only is Professor Sandoval and Coach Alicia outstanding teachers, they are great individuals and leaders. They truly go above and beyond for their students. They have built a great team in Arizona, centered around a loyal, hard-working, humble, family-oriented environment. If you want to learn Jiu-Jitsu, or up your current game, this is the place to be. Whether your goal is self defense, competition, fitness or just fun, you might as well learn from the best. Do your research, and you'll realize what it means to be a part of Carlson Gracie Team. The kids team is phenomenal, because this is an old-school, traditional academy. This is not some Mcdojo or a karate school inside wal-mart. The kids are taught the same way the adults are- work hard, be humble, be respectful, be a good teammate and don't embarrass the sport. Nothing is given, everything is earned. There is no "belt test fee" or "stripe fee" or any other money- making schemes. Carlson Gracie Team is a family. When we travel to other states and train at other Carlson academies, or when we have visitors, everyone is welcomed with open arms. It doesn't matter what belt you hold, if you have Bulldogs on your Gi, you're one of us.
I don't think Jiu Jitsu gets any better than Medavia, they teach the art through Carlson Gracie, and Carlson Gracie Jr. The Sandoval's are a great coaching team. The upper belts assist and all together it makes for a great team with great education, and me mentorship. I could not ask for anything more.
If you are looking for top-notch jujitsu with people that feel like family, this is your place.
Family friendly, and also a very comprehensive curriculum! OSS!
Very proud to be part of the Carlson Gracie Team. Not only do I train, but both my boys train as well. Kids are very disciplined and perform outstanding during competition. We are more than training partners, we are a big jiu jitsu family.
Awesome family jiu jitsu academy for all ages. Competitive, fun and an excellent environment to be around.
If your goal is to learn the most effective martial art of BJJ then look no further. Best coaches and teammates you could ever ask for. Age, experience and physical abilities don't matter because of the design of the training programs which are for all levels. You will look and feel better. I didn't know ANY BJJ or anyone from the school, found the place online and now its more than academy, its my 2nd home and coaches and teammates became my family!!
If you are looking for a family friendly goal oriented environment, then look no further. The instructors and the students are some of the friendliest people you will ever meet. The people that we work with quickly become almost like family. Whether you are looking for fitness, motivation, a new skill set or competition, this place has what you need.
What a great place to learn jiu jitsu for all ages! The Sandoval family each take the time to help mentor and coach. Both of my boys train here. Although we are the newbies, we feel extremely welcome. Everyone is so good to help the kids to learn and grow. So thankful to be apart of an amazing team!
My 2-word summary of this place is: absolutely fantastic. I was hooked since my free trial period. My friend (also a member at this school) explained the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and I found it interesting. A couple months later I tried my free trial period at this very place. When I entered a couple months ago I literally had absolutely no knowledge of any martial arts whatsoever. The only knowledge I had was from research of the different forms, but I have never practiced a martial art before (I did not even know what a gi was (traditional martial arts uniform)). Coach Alex and Alicia took me from zero to competent in no time flat. I have been a student in different universities for a very long time and I can say with complete confidence that the best professors I have ever learned from were the ones that had the most passion about the subject. This is what I get from Coach Alex and Alicia. They truly love the sport and are passionate about teaching. This makes the sport a lot more fun, and they are well qualified and competent professors. They are also very patient, and willing to work with you if you have a deficiency in a certain area. They address common mistakes and misunderstandings in techniques and these pearls (mainly built from experience) are priceless. This type attention, passion, focus, and coaching are very rare in this sport and finding means you hit a gold mine. The atmosphere is also very warm and welcoming. You will build a solid base and foundation in the sport from both the coaches and the teammates. The teammates will understand your level of proficiency and will plan your sparring accordingly teaching you the basics and many different things along the way. The Coaching is amazing and the atmosphere carries a familial undertone, which makes this school the best in the entire state.
This studio is unlike anything you've ever experienced. Family-friendly, incredible leadership and top-notch instruction come second to the community you'll experience here.
Professor Alex and Coach Alicia are a phenomenal duo caring for their students as though they are family. You are challenged to grow in the school and tasked with carrying the Jui-Jitsu lifestyle outside the school. Being a member of the Medavia family is to be a part of a long tradition of the Gracie family. This is what being part of a martial arts school is supposed to be; a family, tradition, challenges, and success and not another monthly payment to a "gym".
There are much better Jujitsu places. We never felt Alex was a great teacher. He mainly just yells at the kids and belittles them. His teaching style is telling the kids rather than showing. There are much better gyms. ********** Response: As it won’t let me reply to your post. My kids have never used a racial slur in their life. One of my sons made a comment asking why a kid smelled funny and that was it. My kid was 7 and it was more of a question. You are lying and bending facts, and you know it. Please have some integrity. As far as the bitting goes 1st a kid was choking out my kid and when my kid tapped the other kid kept going, and since you guys don’t pay attention enough you didn’t stop it. I agree that bitting isn’t okay. We talked with our kid about it and what he could’ve done. 2nd he did not break skin. You are lying again. My wife asked if I should come in and talk to Alex but he wanted to talk with just her alone. We wanted to leave your gym long before any of this but when we signed up you guys made us agree to 1 year. We are thrilled to be out of there. ********** Second response. Again more lies. We had a scheduled meeting for my wife and I to come and talk at 4pm. You decided to have it with just my wife around noon and said there was no reason for me to come in now. I would love the pictures Dmd to me. As well as the conversation. Because you lied about it breaking skin. (Again not condoning the bitting) The reason for the review 10 months later is because I ran into someone else with the same feelings as to the coaching style. A lot of talk and criticism and not enough teaching or showing. Which is what my review was 100% percent about, nothing else.
Pros: Serious BJJ gym with a tight nit group of kids and adults. Cons: Owner Alex and Alicia are incredibly controlling and are generally unfriendly, often offensive and rude, people. My 6 year old daughter would cry before going to every class begging me not to take her. A 5 year old boy showed up for his first class one day and said he had to go potty. Alex didn’t believe him and made him run laps while the boy cried “I have to go potty!” Until he eventually peed himself. It was very sad and disturbing. They compete in and pride themselves on winning many tournaments. This is true. But what we found was they avoided the larger, more competitive, tournaments that paired up and ranked AZ BJJ gyms against each other. I had safety concerns about my 6 year old daughter being taught, as Alex said, a dangerous move. Alex didn’t teach my daughter how to do the move and through her into the fire. She was repeatedly flipped over and slammed forehead first into the mat. I was so distraught but was afraid to say anything during class as nobody is allowed to talk, students or parents, when Alex is drilling. He will make an example out of you if you try to speak up. So I emailed him after class to express my safety concerns and Alex was very defensive and made all sorts of excuses about how kids are durable and flexible and don’t get hurt like adults do. We agreed to disagree. The straw that broke the camels back was during a tournament. My daughter was competing for first place, she was down by 8 points with 5 seconds left, looks up to me on the sideline with desperation in her eyes, and I tell her to “keep fighting!”. After the match when she lost, Alex storms over to me and starts yelling at me “YOU'RE THE REASON SHE LOST! I TOLD YOU NOT TO TALK TO THE KIDS DURING THE MATCH AND IF SHE DIDN'T LOOK TO YOU, SHE WOULD HAVE WON!” I told Alex that he was being very disrespectful and that I wasn’t going to have this conversation with him, and I walked away. Alex stormed after me, grabbed my shoulder and spun me around, got in my face, and yelled “YOU'RE DONE! YOU'RE DONE! YOU'RE OUT OF MY GYM!” I’ve never felt so relieved. The only reason we stayed there as long as we did was because of the relationships we made with the other families there. The people are great at the gym, but Alex and Alicia are cold and rude and only seem to care about collecting trophies. We now go to a different gym, my kids both love going, and we have an amazing relationship with the owners of this gym. It’s a night and day difference. With so many good BJJ gyms available, I don’t know why people choose to go here.
