When I first took my son (9 year old) to Butch's gym a year ago, I was wary about introducing him to combat sports in general. I am happy to say now that those worries were misplaced. Butch and his team are AMAZING! Jiu Jitsu is a demanding sport and has increased my son's cardio capacity immensely. Beyond that, it has helped him build lean muscle and greatly improve his overall confidence. I cannot say enough about the staff and the curriculum. The gym has a very family vibe and we felt welcomed from day 1. If you are on the fence, definitely give it a try.

This is Robert. Instructor Butch Hiles is a very good teacher and mentor. He is down to Earth and friendly, with a good sense of humor. Having said that, I would not "meet Butch in back alley", as he not appears to be a potential formidable opponent as he is big, strong, and more importantly is knowledgeable. Butch's crew is friendly, patient, and good with 'newbies' like myself and my daughter.

I dropped in during a road trip. The team was very welcoming. I took Hunter's class and John's class. Solid instruction going over takedowns, side control escapes, and great rolling. The showers were clean and helped a lot for my road trip. Thank you Butch Hiles BJJ team! Highly recommend.

Best place to put your kids to learn something valuable. Classes for everything all ages. This place just keeps getting better (updates to classes, updates to the facility). Probably the only place to have fun doing something productive as an adult in this county. Classes for adults are available while children's classes run which really helps a ton. Customer for life

Have been there for just over a month now. I came in with zero BJJ experience and it has been awesome. Butch and everyone else have always been patient and willing to show/explain anything I've ever asked. Aside from that, they're just a good group to be around and make each class fun.

Butch And Lisa are wonderful people. My son has been training there since 2009 and have been treated just like part of their family! I am proud to say my son trains there as they are a top notch gym. He has brought home a lot of gold thanks to Butch and his training partners.

I started training here In Muay Thai back in my Junior year of high school in 2017 and honestly it’s the best gym ever. I’ve been here for a little over a year and I now do BJJ, needless to say Butch is a awesome instructor, Benji is a awesome instructor and so is the rest of the guys who are here! It’s not just a gym to me but also it’s like my second home and they treat me like family and I look up to Benji and Butch because they are great mentors as well.

I began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu while in college in June 2017 because I wanted to learn a new skill and try something that seemed unique. I never had an athletic background before starting and the instructors, including Butch himself, have been nothing but kind, patient, and informative since day one. I went from training there one day a week to now five days a week, not only because I enjoy the challenge and workout of BJJ, but also because the environment is always positive and coming to class will easily turn your day around for the better.

When I lived in Charleston, I took a beginners boxing class and a Krav Maga class, plus I enrolled my daughter in BJJ. I loved both of my classes and the instructors we had were top notch. I also started working with a personal trainer in the gym. Even though I’m no longer in the area, I still recommend the gym to everyone that is looking for the best. I know that if I was still there in the area, then I’d be taking Lisa’s kickboxing class because it just looks fun and a great workout.

If you have any reservations about martial arts or getting in shape DONT!!!!! Butch Hiles and his professional staff are top notch and will put you on a path to reach your goals whatever they might be. I personally trained under his tutelage for years until work obligations forced me to move but I can honestly say it was the best times of my life. Not only did I learn jiu jitsu and Muay Thai kickboxing but I got a lifelong friend and mentor. I couldn't recommend advance bkj enough!!!!!

Amazing high level instruction. A time tested curriculum from BJJ Coach and legend Marcello Monteiro is the base here as well as the evolution of the newest techniques used in elite BJJ competitions. Butch is a great instructor and gives his time to make his students the best that they can be. The entire Association is family and you will be welcomed with hospitality.

My nephew is a member of this gym and Butch worked with his family to ensure he could attend classes when they went through a rough patch. He did not have to but he did and was very gracious about it. My nephew has loved going to this gym. He has learned a lot and after just six months of training won the state championship in his division. Way to go Butch Hiles gym!!!

I roll under Professor Hiles as an affiliate from Weirton, WV. We make periodic visits down to Butch Hiles Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & MMA. Professor Hiles is the real deal, and his martial arts resume speaks for itself. You would be hard pressed to find a more knowledgeable, competition proven, or genuine instructor anywhere. You walk in, and you can tell you’re not dealing with a Mcdojo. If you’re looking for glitz, glamor, oversized trophy’s and medals to speak of the school's accomplishments, you may have walked into the wrong place. Although Professor Hiles and his students are as decorated as they come, his staff and students would much rather show you how talented they are, then show you large pieces of plastic and marble. Unlike a lot of other schools were getting a stripe or a belt is a mystery and often in the head of the instructor, at Professor Hiles school the curriculum is laid out for you. It is for this reason you can believe that his staff, instructors, and those with belts and stripes know their stuff and have proven it. If you are interested Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Muay Thai, or just want a place to work out and get in better shape this school is a one-stop shop, and I highly recommend it.

I got station with the military in Charleston in 2010 I started looking for a gym here and quickly was pointed in Butch's direction by multiple military people already assigned here. I have been to gyms across the country and I can tell you that you will not find better and more honest people than Butch and his staff. They truly care about helping people. I highly recommend them for anyone looking to train in BJJ or just looking to get in better shape and some fun doing so.

Lisa runs the best cardio kickboxing class around. She always makes sure to recognize new and returning members and makes each workout one to remember. There is nothing but positivity in that gym, and I always leave in a great mood.

Great gym, great people. I started bringing my kids there over three years ago to bullyproof them, and now I haven't had problems of that nature for a long time. Some of my kids moved on to adult class, so I didn't have an excuse not to take class myself and have been training with Butch for over a year now. You won't find a better instructor or person than him. Also have to give shout outs to the other great instructors: Benji: Krav Maga, James Jenkins: Kids, Justin Turner: Friday class, Brian: No gi, James Mabon: Cardio kickboxing. and any others I may have forgotten.

I have trained with Butch Hiles Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA in Charleston WV for over 2 years. I initially started training because I wanted to lose weight and I had always been interested in martial arts but never actually tried any of them. In the beginning I was nervous because I figured that people that had been training for a while would just beat up on me, but what I found out was the exact opposite. Everyone had a great attitude and they were really helpful. Butch is a great teacher and he really tries to bring out the best in his students. I would recommend Butch Hiles BJJ and MMA to anyone who is looking for quality training in a fun and friendly environment. So if your in the Charleston WV area you should definitely stop by and check out the gym, I promise you won't be disappointed.

A relaxed atmosphere with friendly and welcoming people. They were nice enough to let me stop in and train with them for the evening while I was traveling for work. I will definitely be back if I'm in the area again.

Extremely unprofessional and rude

Wanted to do technical boxing/BJJ and was told by the "gentleman" working-- after he looked me up amd down that I would be allowed to do cardio kickboxing (not technical and not mitt work- no skill building). Staff was very rude. I went to an intro bjj night and given no instructions by the staff other than "roll". Would recommend if you know someone who already goes there (so you dont just get stared at angrily) and kickboxing looked great for instructed cardio (but not for becoming fight-ready). Staff was insanely rude/ignoring you (didnt meet Butch) the 3 times I attended. Two of the other students were outstanding with trying to introduce/include me, and were patient and kind. But the staring, and overall hostile environment was not ideal if I'm going to pay to be there.
