Hufana sir has a way with teaching that's so captivating and fascinating! All 4 of us in the family have learnt so much in just a few months... We can see how some of our seniors have been around for 30+ years!
This is one of the best martial arts schools I have attended. I have been to a few different schools, one was even taught by an Olympic gold medalist in Taekwondo in Portland. While the instructor had good techniques for sports/competition, I doubt it was good enough for the street because the black belts students could not even perform basic self-defense techniques that I was taught in Bellevue Martial Arts Academy while I was a green belt. At Bellevue Martial arts academy, the instructors are knowledgeable on both Taekwondo and the Filipino martial arts. I am confident what I have learned and will be able to protect myself and go home if the worst situation happened to me in the street. If you want to learn real, practical defending techniques, you should go check out this school.
My son has been taking lessons here for past 7 yrs. Master Hufana is passionate about teaching traditional taekwondo. Students pay a set fee per month for 3 lessons per week. You learn real defense skills and spar weekly. After all these years, my son is now a confident 14 yr old with rock hard muscles on his arms and legs. At school, he has stepped in to diffuse fights and speaks up for those being ridiculed. The business is family owned so you become a part of their family. If you want honest instructors who can not only teach good fighting techniques but how to be a good person, this is the place for you. I only wish I had done this early in my life to get those nice muscles! One other thing, they don't give out belts just for showing up. You actually have to earn it!
I have been training under the Hufana Traditional Arnis International (HTAI) system since December 2011. HTAI's system is straightforward, combative, realistic, and very practical. I train with with Maestro Ed Peregrino down in Anaheim, CA, but we do come up to Bellevue Martial Arts Academy once or twice a year for PG Hufana's annual spring and fall camps. Although we only see PG and the rest of the crew a few times per year, everyone is still treated like family. There are no egos here, and everyone is more than willing to help you train and improve your skillset. Just make sure to come with an open mind, and empty cup (or bucket as PG says). If you're looking for a place to train in martial arts, this is it!
Great place for Martial Arts Training! I have been here for 20 years- you walk in the door and you're part of the family. Real world training, you'll learn things (Arnis) in class that can "save your bacon" on the street. As a 30 year veteran of Law Enforcement I have used things I have learned from PG Hufana's training to protect myself and others in real street confrontations. Maraming Salamat Po PG for keeping me safe and getting me home!
I started training in arnis (FMA) in Bellevue Martial Arts back in Sept 2002 and it was the best decision I've made regarding my martial arts training. BMAA is a family owned business and that's exactly what you get, a family oriented business where everyone is family. Training is one of the best I've seen or experienced. It is very practical and PG Hufana tailors his teaching and family system to be as combative and realistic as possible. What I love most about the arnis classes are the brotherhood. All the arnis guys help each other, all instructors are open minded and very helpful. Although I moved back to CA in 2007, I continue to train under PG Hufana and I fly back to Seattle twice a year to get my fill of brotherhood and training. I highly recommend this school and PG Hufana.
I am a student under the Hufana Traditional Arnis International system. I travel from Alaska to train under PG Hufana. Highly recommended. The owners are amazing people.
I'm a life-long Martial Artist, commenting on the previous disrespectful review that I just read, with all due disgust. WOW! The NERVE of some people! I have been teaching or studying various systems for most of my life. The comments from the strategically anonymous "Google User", who apparently didn't stick around long enough to even grasp the basics of Kali before assaulting the character of the school, techniques and it's patrons are ignorant and speak volumes of the character of the person who posted them. I am not associated with this school (yet) due to work related scheduling issues, but have spoken at length to the owner and found him most courteous, knowledgeable and professional. To disrespect the traditions of an advanced system of martial arts, and to so easily cast disparaging remarks on the proprietors because you can't "wear what you want" makes you the kind of person who is most likely more comfortable taking cardio kickbox at the YMCA. Did you not have to dress for gym in high school? wear a uniform for ANY important team oriented role? NO traditional and serious school of martial arts is going to let you wear whatever you want to class! You expect to just buy things online to wear for a traditional organization? How embarrassing! Probably why you didn't include your name... To downplay the value of the techniques offered when you obviously didn't stay long enough to learn anything is ridiculous. Had this person done their homework, they would know that Kali principles are currently employed by US Special Forces, Police and SWAT, as well as many International foreign fighting forces! It's not for the half-hearted. The style is incredibly effective for real life encounters, and better geared for surviving street confrontations than just about any that I've studied, which is why I was very happy to find a reputable school with such a renowned headmaster in REDMOND! I'm chomping at the bit to start my training here as soon as my schedule permits, and invite you to call the school and see for yourself how welcoming the Guro is. As far as the system is concerned, Google search YouTube for "Kali" or "Eskrima" or even "Panantukan" and try to keep your jaw from dropping at the ridiculous speed and effectiveness of the techniques. No useless forms or flowery fluttering, it works. In my professional security career, Kali techniques have worked VERY well for me in the past, and though I'm admittedly a novice I love the style, it works, and I can't wait to train here! I am not going to hide behind anonymity with MY comments, and I really hope whoever posted that laughable review is ashamed of themselves for casually disparaging something that took centuries to build, something that they were simply not cut out for. REAL Martial Arts aren't made to order, or barter. If you're looking to just buy stuff on the internet and do whatever you want in a class, why bother? No serious school is going to deal with that type of attitude. You get what you pay for, and god forbid if that toll comes in the form of an actual street confrontation, you'll wish you had appreciated the value of structure, and the devastating speed and great confidence that Kali offers. I say this from experience, the same experience that compels me to ask you to see for yourself instead of taking my word for it. Be safe always!
You need to take extreme caution if you want to join this school. Pros: There are a lot of senior students (which they called Gurus) and they are friendly and helpful. The techniques they taught is generally ok, which means it would somewhat likely to be useful on the street. Cons: The school head and his wife will use pressure sales to force you to purchase some equipment from them. e.g. special uniform which contains their logo, sparring gears, training knives ... Of course these equipment is significantly overpriced and poorly made. They will not allow you to purchase from somewhere else and not let you participate in the sparring if you don't purchase it from them. This is obviously unethical business conduct.
