Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. They work great with the kids. Place is clean and prices r reasonable.
After almost 2 years of training at this Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Certified Training Center, it's high time I share why this place is so awesome. I've been to plenty of schools where you feel like you are auditioning for a reality TV fighting show with rough-looking actors. But here? The vibe is friendly, safe, and welcoming — no questionable hygiene or death stares, just good people wanting to train. I love that the two big mat spaces are disinfected daily. (Seriously, if you've ever face-planted on a mat, you know why this is important.) The locker rooms and bathrooms are always clean, fully stocked, and ready for students. The incredible team of instructors, led by Coach Nick Tissue, is the best part of this school. Coach Nick is a Black Belt who brings high energy, positivity, and years of experience to every class. And Alexis? She's the other half of this dynamic duo, heading up the Women's Empowered Gracie Self-Defense program like an absolute boss. The women's program keeps growing, and seeing my jiu-jitsu sisters collect their stripes and strap on new belts is a dopamine surge each time. The assistant instructors are also fantastic. They bring professionalism, preparedness, and genuine care to their classes, creating an environment where everyone feels included and respected. They'll meet you wherever you are on your jiu-jitsu journey — whether you're tying on that brand-new white belt or pushing past the Blue Belt Blues like me. And trust, the upper belts have your back, too. Oh, and did I mention the parking? Plenty of it, with easy access off major routes. So, if you've been on the hunt for a new jiu-jitsu home for yourself or a fun place to do something as a family, stop looking. You've found it.
I've been training at Baltimore Gracie Jiu Jitsu for four years and have never looked back. Nick Tissue is a tremendous teacher, jiu jitsu practitioner, and person. His style is technical, precise, encouraging, and fun! All of the instructors embody that teaching philosophy. Fellow students are super supportive and I love the culture here - very family and kid friendly. The school is super clean also! As an older student (50 yrs old), I always feel comfortable and safe in this environment, and know that this is a place where I will train for decades to come! I highly recommend coming by and trying a class.
I have been training myself and with both of my children for a few years at this time. I'm in my mid 40's and my kids are now 7 (daughter) and 8 (son). The kids started at age 4 and 5! We absolutely have a blast going to train and the environment is super clean and friendly. My kids enjoy the training and the friends they have made at Baltimore Gracie-Jiu Jitsu as have I. My training has been great and I felt very comfortable competing a few times so far and had a blast, but there is 0 pressure or influence to compete. It's a great fit for everyone. I could not imagine having such great training that is so safe and fun for the whole family until I found this place through a close friend. Thanks for everything Nick and Alexis! The skill and confidence in your BJJ will grow so much....Give it a try!
My wife and I were looking for a place to start training jiu jitsu. After looking at a few gyms, this place was the perfect fit for us as we were brand new. As two people who love sports, we want to be challenged but not looking to go so hard that we get injured. This checked all the boxes - great instruction, good teaching, organized, exceptionally clean (mats always sanitized), a clear program for how to progress following the Gracie lesson structure. Nick and his wife Alexis teach a number of programs so no matter what your ability, new or experienced, this is a great option. There’s constantly new angles to class as well - self defense, fight simulation, women empowerment training, kids training, competition themed classes, and high level stuff for the seasoned vets. We’ve been members almost a year now and couldn’t speak highly enough of the school and community here. Thanks!
Nick Tissue and his team are exceptional. The step by step instruction allows you to understand the skills that your are learning. Gracie Jiujitsu is not just to self defense. I’ve found it to be good for fitness, friendship, and family. Several of my nieces and nephews have trained in the kids program. I currently have all 3 of my kids training at Baltimore Gracie Jiujitsu. Very diverse group or training partners from all walks of life and career fields. Family friendly environment. Supporters of military service members and emergency service professionals. Super clean training area. Just drop in for a few classes and find out if it’s for you.
Baltimore Gracie Jiu-jitsu is a fantastic place to learn and train! The instruction here is top-notch, with instructors who walk you through techniques step-by-step, ensuring you understand and execute them correctly. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced practitioner, you'll find the guidance and support you need to improve your skills. The academy is incredibly family-friendly, making it an excellent place for all ages. The facility is always clean and well-maintained. If you're looking for a place to learn Jiu-Jitsu in a positive and supportive atmosphere, Baltimore Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is the perfect choice. Highly recommended!
I've been attending classes for a year and my young sons have been coming nearly as long. The atmosphere is collegial and cooperative. Nick and Alexis have created a welcoming environment for beginners as well as more experienced practitioners. I've never had a bad class or an instructor that wasn't knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. Very highly recommended.
Have had great experiences here training BJJ for years. Nick is a good coach and is knowledgeable, responsive & patient. He has built a really positive culture here. +++ CLEAN MATS + Both Gi and No-Gi options for training + Classes and schedule are structured well + Alot of mat space + Welcoming team & coaches + Clean & spacious locker rooms
This is a great gym with a welcoming environment and awesome training. I dropped in while I was in town, and the lead instructor Nick treated me like one of his regular students. Highly recommended if you're looking for BJJ gym in Baltimore!
Such an AMAZING school, and the people are EVEN BETTER! Thanks to Nick for the hospitality and letting me drop in at your school! I’ll definitely stop by the next time I’m in the neighborhood! A++++
I visited this gym last week and attended a no gi class and had a blast. Professor Nick was a great teacher and was clear and concise. I loved that he brought focus to the self defense aspect and real world application. The students were great to roll with and were all very welcoming. I have been to many gyms as a visitor in the last several years and have had many different experiences. This was easily one of the best and welcoming gyms I have visited. I will absolutely look them up again the next time I am in the area.
I’ve been training martial arts in one form or another since I was a kid so I’ve been a part of many gyms. Started BJJ in earnest at age 50. I can’t say enough positive things about this place. The instruction is top notch. Nick, his wife and their staff are truly gifted instructors. They really care about their students making progress and are some of the friendliest people around. More importantly, and in my opinion a huge differentiator from other BJJ gyms, they do the business part right. No onerous contracts, no hassles if you want to stop coming, no high pressure, back room sales tactics. Just a great service at a very reasonable price. Everyone I’ve met seems very happy and satisfied here. I don’t normally write reviews, good or bad, but I feel like Baltimore Gracie Jiu-Jitsu deserves a shout out for being a really good business doing BJJ the way it’s supposed to be done.
Amazing school. Great and large facilities, very clean, excellent instructors and the students are extremely nice and friendly. More a family than anything else. Just good things to say about this gym. Nick (main instructor) is enthusiastic and teaches in a smart and technical way. I strongly recommend this school.
I joined Baltimore Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in March 2021. I was a little nervous because I'd had a negative experience at a BJJ gym in another state that wasn't welcoming to women, but I love jiu jitsu and wanted to start training again. Baltimore Gracie has been such a wonderful experience for me on multiple levels. Nick and Alexis are a great team, and make it clear that their priorities are safety, respect, technique, and maintaining a family-friendly gym environment. Nick is a patient, consistent, professional teacher. He listens to what people want from their BJJ training and tailors his feedback and focus accordingly whenever possible. The facility is large, clean, comfortable, and well-lit. Communication is excellent, as the website is regularly updated and emails clarify any upcoming schedule changes. I feel lucky to have found this gym, both for myself and for my teenage nephew who has also joined and can't stop talking about it. Don't hesitate to give it a try if you're at all interested!
I had the pleasure of attending a free class offered by Nick and Alexis for Women Empowerment and self-defense techniques. They are both extremely friendly and provide such a welcoming environment. I can't wait to try more classes!
I went in for a free trial, not knowing anything, and they made me feel so welcomed. I will be back for a lot more!
We joined Baltimore Gracie as a family and we are immediately hooked. Nick and Alexis are super knowledgeable and helpful. Everyone is respectful and welcoming so no one feels.like a newbie or uncomfortable. It is great to build confidence and also a great workout. The gym is also super clean
Great place to learn real Gracie jiu jitsu. Nick (owner) is a black belt under the Gracie family ( Rener and Ryron) and also I believe got his purple belt through Relson Gracie. As legit as it gets :) Very nice guy, I would feel comfortable bringing my kids here to train with him and Laurel. Just overall great place to train, clean and friendly environment.
I would recommend anyone interested in BJJ or martial arts in general to come visit this gym. The head instructor/owner Nick is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet and also one of the best teachers I've ever had the pleasure of learning from. You can expect not only some of the highest quality lessons, but also one of the nicest facilities to come train at. The gym is huge, has many facilities to use, its always extremely clean and also has a strength and conditioning area as well. I like this place so much that I wouldn't train at another gym even if it was free.
I’m in the beginner program, my 6 year old son is in the kids program, and my wife just started in the women empowerment class. We love our classes. My classes are safe and I learn a lot. My son has a great time playing games and learning awesome skills in his class. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Look up videos online about Gracie University to find out mire about the program. Instead of getting beat down in every class, we work together to learn.
Great place to train, clean mats, safe environment. Beginner "combative" class focus on fundamentals and self-defense. Advance "Master Cycle" classes rotate through positional chapters every few months. Careful attention placed on detail. Classes spend more time on technique drilling than warmups. Chill environment that is not competitive. As this is a relatively new school, majority of students are white and blue belts.
Very welcoming and diverse grappling training, from self defense to fight simulation to sports BJJ. Also, a great atmosphere for kids to train. Nick is very knowledgeable and emphasizes technique over strength. A great place to train for novices and experts.
Great instruction and a safe place to roll if you're traveling.
Incredible group of guys! They let me roll while I was here on business and treated me like family! Almost makes me wish I lived here!
Great training atmosphere and even better instruction. The owner Nick and all of his instructors are very knowledgeable and helpful. I highly recommend training with these guys!
Awesome gym, No intimidation, it was my first time trying this and Nick and Pete were great. The other members are super friendly I would absolutely recommend!!
I trained here for about 6 months and ultimately left since I felt unheard and unsafe as a woman. The owners push the "Women Empowered" agenda but consistently fail in protecting the women at the school. Women empowered is supposed to empower women to feel safe and secure but sadly I saw nothing of that being practiced at the school.
