I've trained at a variety of schools throughout the years. Austin Kung Fu Academy has been by far my favorite. Santanu is very patient with each of his students and celebrates tiny progress. Highly recommend this school!
Aaron is my Sidai (younger Kung Fu brother) under Grandmaster Moy Tung, and his Kung Fu is solid. He's been training under Moy Tung since the early 90's and has also done a great deal of training in NY under Grandmaster Moy Yat. Whatever you want to do with Ving Tsun, he can show you how to do it - basic self-defense or the complete Moy Yat Ving Tsun system. He's also a master and teacher of Kettlebell training.
My kid has been taking classes for over two years. It is so great to see him use kung fu when he's dancing (for example)! Kung fu becomes part of life.
I've enjoyed the cardio kickboxing classes so far. Rick is a great instructor and changes it up a little each time we meet with him (classes are Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday). They have two different rates: paying by the class which is 8 dollars per class and a 10 class pack for 60 dollars. The latter in my opinion is a better deal. In addition, you can choose the days you want to use the class for. Sometimes I can't make it a certain week but it's not counted against me (balla!).
Expect to get a good workout. Different techniques are taught so don't expect to only learn kickboxing techniques. I felt like some of the exercises that we do in the beginning of class ties more with tai chi/karate. Another plus? My classes have never exceeded three people. I do wish though more attention was paid on technique.
If you're here to lose calories and have a good time, it's worth checking this place out.
My daughter loves Kung Fu and Mr. Rick. She is very proud of the skills she has learned, the sash level she has achieved and this program has really boosted her confidence. I would highly recommend Austin Kung Fu Academy.
our children trained here for a couple of years, they seemed to have enjoyed the class. Sometimes I sat in the waiting room to observe the class. The actual training time and physical interaction was short, they spent lots time on listening and demo instructions. The allure of training with the 'weapons' was intriguing to my tween. Once he was not obedient and the master had to 'disarm' him, meaning he had to use some sort of technique pressing on his neck/throat part to temporarily disable him. This experience was alarming to my child, and when I asked him what would've been a better way, he said, use words. While I understand why the master had to do such a thing, I disagree that he did not inform me of the incident and I found out about it much later from my child. If the 'weapon' is that dangerous, then it should not be used for that age group. I discontinue their lessons for two major reasons: not enough cardio, and poor communications.
