If you're looking for the best place in town....this is it! This place is so much more than just a school; it's a community and a family. My son has had the privilege of learning from Master Melissa for the last two years. Through her teaching and guidance my son has developed a set of skills that he will carry with him for the rest of his life. Every kids class has a set of student teachers and they always go above and beyond for these kids. They are kind, patient, and knowledgeable. I can't say enough positive things about this place!!

Master Melissa and Master Art have created a truly unique space that positions kids for success. While the Martial Arts instruction is absolutely 5-star, including basics, self-defense, and sparring, the true gems are the core lessons in discipline, respect, self-confidence and leadership that allows kids to shine. Our son has been with the Academy for almost 2 years, and each moment spent here has been well worth the hour round-trip. He’s grown as an individual, and has applied the core values he’s learned at AHMA to his home life, academics and extracurricular sports, and has received numerous accolades in all areas. My son has been going to this martial arts studio for almost 3 years now, and it has truly been a great experience for him and our family. My son started in the little ninja program, and is now a one stripe orange belt, and he is looking forward to continuing his skills with martial arts. Grandmaster Art and Master Melissa are wonderful instructors and take the time to explain new skills and lessons to the kids while teaching the children discipline and respect. They also take the time to talk to all the kids in attendance and make them believe they are all valued and important. They also take time to say hi to my daughter who just comes to watch her big brother. The students going through this program have to work hard for every belt promotion, and you can see that every child who earns their next stripe or belt is proud of their accomplishments, but so are Grandmaster Art and Master Melissa. My son loves to go to martial arts, and I look forward to him moving forward at the studio and all the skills he will earn.
It's clear that every instructor has a passion for their craft...and Grandmaster Art and Master Melissa take time and care with every individual child. They are shaping and enriching their minds as well as their Martial Art skills.
Our son started attending AHMA almost 2 years ago and quickly fell in love with Master Art and Master Melissa. They not only teach a artful sport but life lessons, encouraging respect, honesty and discipline. After watching our son excel, our daughter decided to join and has been loving every minute of her time at AHMA! It is a lot of fun to watch the interaction between our children and the instructors. Our son has been going to AHMA for almost a year and it has been a wonderful experience. I appreciate that Master Melissa spends a lot of individual time with each student to make sure they are doing skills correctly and hold them accountable. They do not just go through the motions and send them to the back of the line. Students have to put in a lot of time to earn each new stripe or belt which helps them understand the importance of commitment and perseverance rather than instant gratification. Both Masters Art and Melissa make the effort to get to know each student as an individual. They have helped our son recognize his personal strengths and continue to encourage him in the areas he needs to improve.
My son absolutely loves coming to his classes every week! We started attending with a free class special they had going on and the smile and enjoyment my son had when he walked out of the building I knew instantly, he said can I please go here mom and we haven’t stopped learning and thriving since. The instructors are so friendly and absolutely fantastic with the kids!! They keep him focused and teach him how he should be respectful and responsible, how things are earned and not just given to you. Also, everytime a holiday comes near they always have some fun game or activity that involves basic skills and techniques while still enjoying the holiday fun which I think is an added bonus. All around awesome martial arts school to send your kids to, strongly vouch for them!!!
The best place to go for Martial Arts. We've had an absolutely wonderful experience this past year at Art Hinkelbein Martial Arts Academy! Master Melissa and staff have an excellent teaching style that is great for children, teens and adults. We are looking forward to enrolling our other daughter.
AHMA has been an important part of my family for many years. 2 of my children have learned discipline, respect, and a love for Mixed Martial Arts being taught by Master Art and Master Melissa. They teach the children with a perfect combination of tough love and nurturing. They not only teach MMA, but self-defense to prepare them for what could be a dangerous world. My children love coming here and have found a forever love for MMA. I could not recommend them more.
I’m not sure if this is a “thank you” post or a review, but here goes: Staff: Grandmaster Art and Master Melissa have the upmost professionalism, patience, and heart when it comes to educating children in the martial arts. They have worked with my son for 4 years, never once giving up on him when he was struggling and never once made me feel like they “just wanted the enrollment”. They truly care about what they do and their pupils. The assistants who work in the classes also give my son more role models to look up to. Facility: Clean, spacious, and good temp control. Huge viewing window for parents. Schedule: Very flexible with multiple class times to pick from. Owners and staff also easily available for questions and needs. Cost: No class time is wasted, your child will be learning and practicing every minute, making the cost well worth it. Uniforms are sharp and quality material. Overall: Give your child the gift of confidence, discipline, friends, and fitness with AHMA.

I signed my son up for martial arts when he turned 5. He was just starting kindergarten and felt he needed an outlet. By far the best martial arts studio around. You can tell they truly care about the kids that go there, not only with what they are teaching them but also with how they encourage them to believe in themselves. They don’t just hand out belts and promotions, the kids have to work for it and earn it, which is a very valuable lesson in life. My son looks forward to going to class!
Master Melissa is fantastic. She enriches the entire child, mind, body and spirit. In a society where everyone gets a trophy and there are not realistic expectations around winning and losing, kids in this studio are learning real life, discipline, focus, accountability, how to be gracious when winning and losing, all served up with a lot of love. I feel safe with my child there and know he is being taught valuable skills and life lessons in a safe environment. They take doing it right, the students well being and safety very seriously. Can't say enough about Grand Master Art and Master Melissa!

My son has been in Master Melissa's Little Ninja's class since just before he turned 4. We enrolled to support his listening skills and promote self-control. Master Melissa instills important lessons such as discipline, respect, and patience into each fun lesson of high kicking and combinations. He loves Little Ninja class and we love watching him grow under Master Melissa's guidance.
Master Art and Master Melissa have done wonderful things for my daughter. Being a part of this studio she has learned not only fantastic skills for her entire life in martial arts but she is also learned how to be focused, have a positive attitude, stay balanced and be part of a team. They challenge her to be a better person and I can not thank them enough.

My son and daughter have been going to AHMA for years! We love Master Art and Master Melissa! They run a tight ship...filled with respect, commitment, dedication, morals, and good-old fashion family values. They have always been fair, reasonable, and completely forthcoming in all their interactions both with students and parents. Their policies are well-established and clearly defined. Kids and parents know what to expect from the all of the instructors and the office staff. There are no secrets. Additionally, thoughtout the entire COVID nightmare, Master Art and Master Melissa have bent over backwards to continue training/education using virtual instruction. I cannot praise them enough for modifying and adjusting to keep the students engaged and learning! There have been bumps along the way, but everything has been immediately addressed and rectified with a simple phone calls and open communication . Well done guys! We love you!

Master Melissa and all the the helpers in class have been absolutely wonderful with my 4 year old. They teach valuable life lessons and make class fun while still keeping structure to class!! My daughter looks forward to class and even at 4 years old talks about how she wants to be like “the big kid teachers” when she grows up!
Have been coming for 7 months and have lost 20 pounds have become more focused , more confident , motivated and love the one on one training and attention you receive. Love the family atmosphere from the second you enter the door and there is good vibes and you always feel like you are getting the best of you to be seen. Grandmaster Art and Master Melissa are two of the most patient, caring individuals I know. They go out of their way to help anyone in need, whether they are their students or not. My granddaughters were students for years and grew leaps and bounds in terms of confidence and self esteem, which is priceless for them as young ladies. They instill great values in their students and teach them self defense skills at the same time. I highly recommend their academy, talk to them once and you'll be able to feel their passion for what they do!

My daughter has been attending this school since she was 8 years old. As a very painfully shy little girl she had difficulty socializing and having confidence in herself. She has been faithful to these fine masters for the last 24 years. She is now a focued, well rounded woman who can protect herself in any situation presented to her. Iv been dealing with Master Art for some 20 years. Followed his School from Ramtown to Point to Forked River. my daughter worked and earned second degree black. 15 years of nothing but life's lessons were taught. Lessons my daughter still uses today. The door at Master Arts and Milissa school is always openwhenever needed. the place is class.

We have been a martial arts family since my girls were preschoolers. When we moved back to NJ 4 year ago and were looking for a Martial Arts studio I knew it would be a tough shoe to fill. We LOVED our school in MD and still keep in touch. After visiting SEVERAL schools in the area prior to coming back once when walked through the doors of Art Hinkelbeins's Academy we knew we found a new home. Grand Master Art spent time with my girls before we even joined and I felt a sense of commitment and honor that we experienced in our old school that just wasn't there anywhere else we visited. Learning a different discipline was a challenge and something to think about and Master Art was encouraging and supportive. We thought about it for six months the dust settled from the move and soon we found our way back to Mix Martial Arts. Only one of my daughters was ready for the commitment of learning everything new and starting over. NOTHING IN LIFE is easy and Grand Master Art very well to get our business, could have just HANDED my girls their belts. Instead he dug in and was right there to support my daughter's journey. It's 4 years now and we have never looked back. Best decision ever!!!! Grand Master Art and Master Melissa are very dedicated, warm, approachable and terrific teachers and mentors. My daughter is confident and a force to be reckoned with thanks to Grand Master Art and Master Melissa. Martial Arts is about character, leadership, and integrity and I feel they definitely walk the walk and it is part of their curriculum. Great great studio! My twin daughters started at age 6. My initial purpose for enrolling them at AHMAA was for them to learn self discipline and and confidence. Fast forward to today, at age 14 my daughters have developed into confident, disciplined and FIT young women! Great decision eight years ago. Master Art and Master Melissa will give you the undivided attention you deserve. If you are signing up a child they will show them the confidence that they can do anything. I have been a student of Grandmaster Hinkelbein for approximately 14 years. In the past I've trained in traditional Korean and Okinowa martial arts for several years and always enjoyed the training. However, when I came to train with Grandmaster Hinkelbein, an entire new world of martial arts opened up to me. The strike dynamics the blocking schemes, the throws and locks were new, innovative, and exciting, and remain so to this day. I am not your average martial arts student, as I am now in my 60's, with the typical injuries associated with a lifetime of strenuous physical activity, and would only push the limits of my physical capabilities in order to train with Grandmaster Hinkelbein, and Master Melissa. I cannot recommend this school or this program more highly, as it has changed my life in a spiritual as well as a physical manner. I look forward to each class, and cannot imagine a better way to spend my time.
AHMA has been a remarkable experience for me. This place is AMAZING! I joined a little under a month ago and to say the least, I'm hooked! I've known the Hinkelbein's for a few years now and they are THE most excellent people inside the school and outside in life, I'm truly proud to be apart of their school. They treat their students SO well and the knowledge between Master Art and Master Melissa is endless, I highly suggest it if you're looking to change your life for the better!
Art and Melissa will give your kid excellent instruction. Just beware that when you sign up with them you are stuck into a one year contract you can't get out of no matter what. If your kid decides two months later that they don't want to be involved in karate anymore they will still take your money with no problem for the other ten months. It is unethical on their part to take money from people who no longer want their service.
Where to begin , originally I had nothing but wonderful things to say about this place , but unfortunately things have changed ! Our first complaint is regarding their yearly contract ,we were aware of the one year no cancellation policy contract but what we weren’t aware of is the automatic re enrollment , we were never notified Of the upcoming re enrollment so when we went to cancel after the one year contract we were told that’s not possible because they re enrolled our nephew automatically without our permission. Secondly , As everyone is aware with COVID-19 lots of changes have been made And there are many more risks now present , and the decision has been made with our nephew that it’s no longer something we feel comfortable with him continuing with moving forward . We discussed this with them and were basically told well you can’t cancel but they can freeze his membership until he feels comfortable coming back ! Although we were shocked to hear they didn’t have a plan in place for people who don’t feel safe returning we decided to just take that as a good enough response and move forward until we are able to cancel at the end of our contract ! Well , not even 24 hours later they charged us ! So not only are they charging for services not being rendered , they did not follow through with their solution of freezing his membership ! We attempted to reach out of course there was no prompt response. They seem to have a hard time managing their operation there and have really failed their customers during this current uncertain times with the risks and fears with COVID-19 . I don’t see how it’s legal to force people to remain enrolled in something they don’t feel safe attending and not even offer an option out . We even offered paying an early termination fee and they don’t offer that ! Unfortunately at this time we feel they did not follow through with their solution of an account freeze they offered us and we feel they need to be reported to the better business bureau.
If I had a choice I'd chose no stars. The owner of this martial arts gym Art Hinkelbein does NOT represent martial arts the least bit. Martial arts is about discipline and good leadership. Art has zero self control and no respect for others. This man should not be allowed to teach others ESPECIALLY children because he does not live by basic morals. Threatening people in public and using foul profanity at a gym is not professional and shows lack of self control. Please think twice before signing up for any of his classes.
