I joined AOC a few months ago after relocating to the area and have felt welcomed by everyone here. All the students at AOC are dedicated to their art, and take both training and etiquette seriously. They treat each other with respect, and support and encourage one another. The instructors are knowledgeable and patient, and push students to reach their fullest potential. I'm grateful to be a part of this dojo, and I look forward to continuing my training here!

It has been a delight training at Aikido of Charlotte. The instructors are knowledgeable, patient, and attentive to all students. The philosophy of Aikido is apparent in how they conduct their classes. The senior students are encouraging and want to help beginners grow. The facility is in great condition and lovely.

I’ve been training at Aikido of Charlotte for years and love it! The instructors are extremely experienced - they make learning and training fun and rewarding. Best culture - everyone really cares about learning, performing proper etiquette, and taking care of the dojo. Great people, great place, great martial art!

My daughter and I took several private self-defense classes with Sensei Jonanthan. He was very accommodating with our challenging schedules, and was professional and helpful. He was a very patient instructor, and was responsive to what both my daughter and I wanted to learn and review in each class. We left the classes feeling that we had learned valuable skills!

I attended a self defense class led by Weiner Sensei and assisted by his senior student Tasha earlier this month. From the start of the class Weiner Sensei was engaging, patient, and encouraging. He asked what we wanted to learn in the class and addressed any questions or concerns that came up. He described, demonstrated, and had us practice multiple scenarios that we might find ourselves in every day. I left feeling empowered by the skills I learned. I highly recommend this class for anyone, regardless of their age or background. Thank you Weiner Sensei, Tasha, and Aikido of Charlotte!

Had been interested in picking up a martial art for a while when I ran into Aikido of Charlotte. I chose the perfect place to begin my Aikido journey! Weiner Sensei and all other instructors are great teachers. Dojo members are all incredibly friendly and made me feel at home right away.

I've trained Aikido since 1995 and have visited dojos all around the world. Aikido of Charlotte is absolutely world class in leadership, instruction, and facilities. The atmosphere is one of encouragement and sincerity where everyone is dedicated to the art and are most kind to one another. I consider myself lucky to have found a new home dojo.

I just recently moved here and was looking for a dojo to practice in and found Aikido of Charlotte and although my Aikido journey has been with a different organization they welcomed me in. Honoring the rank that I had already achieved Sensei is an excellent and patient teacher, the rest of the members of the dojo are warm welcoming and helpful and it is a very efficiently run dojo.

Having an interest in learning a martial art I did not want one where there is joy in pulverizing one another. I attended the Aikido of Charlotte Kagami Biraki (New Year) on January 7th, 2023. Upon arriving I was greeted and made to feel welcome. I observed the full events of the day starting with 1,000 cuts to individuals testing for their next rank. The support and overall respect each member has for one another to succeed in their practice and self-improvement was clear and one of many reasons why the decision was clear to start my own journey the very next day with my first class as a student.

I have been interested in Aikido for many years, but didn't make the time for regular practice until recently. After finding Aikido of Charlotte online, I scheduled a visit to observe a class and immediately decided to join. The facility is spacious, beautiful, and well-maintained. The quality of instruction is excellent and there are many opportunities to train with advanced practitioners. The atmosphere is welcoming, and the focus on safety and etiquette as well as philosophical underpinnings of the art provide a very holistic experience. I am grateful to have found the dojo and expect to train here for many years to come.

I, along with my two daughters, participated in the community self-defense class. I found the class to be very informative, and would highly recommend. The facility is a clean and spacious place. The lead instructor, Jonathan, provided a wealth of information and kept the class flowing with practicing techniques and speaking on situational awareness. His students, who assisted the class, were very kind and patient in working with us. Aikido of Charlotte is a very respectful and welcoming environment.

I took a self defense class with 10 of my friends and I highly recommend! We had such a fun time, but also learned a lot too. It was empowering to discuss and practice tools of defense and ways we as women can be more aware of our surroundings and how to act in a threatening situation if needed. It’s definitely a class to take multiple times to learn more each time and to be confident in implementing skills we learned. Good instructors, good teaching, good times! Thanks Aikido!

I am not typically the audience for a self defense class. I'm 61, 6"2", Crossfit 5 times a week and I'm a pretty strong guy. In some situations that may not mean much. Getting in a street fight with someone who may not have as much to live for as I do or is high out of their mind is not very appealing to me. Strength does not always win a fight. Jonathan and team do a great job of teaching how to avoid getting into violent and physically harmful situations as well as how to quickly get out of them, avoid harm and get help. I would recommend this class certainly to women of all ages, who unfortunately are at higher risk than someone like me, but also to anyone who wants to protect themselves. This is literally live saving information and training. It is an eyeopening experience!

We hired Aikido of Charlotte to host a self-defense class for a women's trade organization and it was a hit! The class was easy to follow with great, hands-on practice for real-world self-defense situations. The trainers were knowledgeable and showed us a variety of techniques to stay safe on our own. I really liked how they worked through each technique with all of us until we had mastered it as well. Highly recommend!

I attended the self-defense course offered at Aikido of Charlotte. It was led by knowledge instructors, and assisted by aikido students who were available to assist us with learning the various self defense tactics. I came away feeling more confident in my ability to defend myself appropriately if the need arises, while also being able to identify and diffuse potential situations. I highly recommend this self-defense class.

I attended a one day self defense class here last month and it was a great experience. I learned a lot of helpful techniques and information, but it was also a lot of fun. Everyone there was really nice and helpful, and Sensei Weiner is a great instructor. I would definitely recommend any of his self defense classes and I'm sure his aikido classes are just as great.

I learned SO MUCH in the community self-defense class I took at Aikido Charlotte. I was an absolute beginner but still learned so many useful techniques for how to get out of various situations. But the biggest takeaway was the mindset they taught. There were advanced students attending who were there to help the beginners which was so helpful. I plan to go to the next session as well. I highly recommend this whatever your experience level with self-defense.

The training is done seriously and with purpose, the instructors are very experienced and sincerely interested in your progress (whatever your pace) and the fellow students are incredibly friendly, helpful and encouraging. You will always feel welcome. Aikido was created as the martial art for the modern age and Aikido of Charlotte earnestly carries that mission forward.

I cannot say enough positive things about this dojo, the Sensei’s, and the Aikidoka that train there. After over 25 years being away from studying Aikido or any other martial art the family at Aikido of Charlotte openly welcomed me in. Family, that is how they treat and respect each other as well the art of Aikido. They have all been very patient and supportive in helping me get back into training on a regular basis. I would highly recommend a visit to Aikido of Charlotte to anyone that is considering studying Aikido or any martial art. This dojo facility, environment, and people are unlike anywhere else I have seen or experienced.

I took a Self-Defense Class at Aikido of Charlotte a few months ago. As a wife to a Police Officer, I know how important it is to be aware of your surroundings and have the skills to protect yourself if needed. The Instructors are experts at what they do! We learned how to assess potentially dangerous situations as well as learned practical self-defense techniques that were easy to learn, practice. While it's a serious topic, the instructors made it a fun and enjoyable class - all while learning the skills I needed. I highly recommend this class to everyone!

Can’t recommend this class more to anyone, especially girls and women. Some potential life saving techniques were taught, demonstrated and practiced during the session. The instructors are extremely experienced and knowledgeable in the area of self-defense and aikido and I feel privileged to have been taught by them. Not just informative but really good fun. I recently attended a self defense class led by Sensei Jonathan Weiner, and WOW! The class was informative, engaging and used real life scenarios to drive home how important awareness and technique are to protecting yourself. He uses demonstrations, hands on exercises and repetition to make sure everyone is using the right technique and offers corrections when he sees you struggling. I will definitely be back to hone my skills and learn new techniques in self defense!

As someone who travels to different Aikido dojos, I get to see the great, good and not so good in martial arts environment and instruction. This dojo scores top marks in all categories. The entire building was made specifically to train in, with lost of natural light and great mats (if you know martial arts, you know how important that is!) but the quality of instruction is even better. Whether you're new to the art or have been practicing for decades, I found the instructors here to be very open and receptive. There's always something to learn from folks who have been in this art 30+ years, and if you're brand new they have an extremely welcoming environment to walk you through the basics. If you're like me, it won't take long in a place like Aikido of Charlotte to decide THIS is the martial art to practice, and this is the place to practice it. Highly recommended!

Beautiful, clean, and bright dojo with a wonderful community of martial artists dedicated to exploring Aikido. I attended a self defense class at Aikido of Charlotte this past weekend and I cannot say enough good things. The instructors were extremely knowledgeable and it was a comfortable learning environment. As a stay at home mom of two young children, I feel better prepared to defend myself/ family if a situation should ever arise. (Insert jaw drop emoji here) I learned so much about how to defend myself and to be aware of my surroundings in just 1 hour! If you haven't had any formal training or just think you know how to defend yourself, you're 95% wrong. I HIGHLY recommend Aikido of Charlotte to teach you very easy ways to be more aware of your surrounding AND how to defend yourself from an attack. There are so many things you can do and no I know because of just one hour of class. I will be going back to take more classes on self defense and I think everyone should as well. You never know when you'll need the knowledge to defend yourself. - Angelo

I am very pleased with my experience at Aikido of Charlotte. This is not a place that churns out black belts; they want to make sure you're learning effectively at a pace that's appropriate for you as an individual. The sensei work closely with students, ask what you feel you need work on, and follow up on your feedback to see how you're progressing. As a female student I've found there's an air of comraderie that is different from the hyper aggressive/competitive atmosphere of other martial arts. My sensei and fellow students have given me a feeling of acceptance without making me feel babied or "othered." I work with other students every single class and never feel like I'm at a disadvantage. They're also involved in the wider Aikido community. Our sensei host and attend seminars all over the country and invite sensei from other states to teach at our dojo. It feels much more like a cooperative network and means we're invested in the longevity of aikido practice.

I just took Women’s Self Defense class for the first time and I absolutely loved it! I don’t know what took me so long to take this class… I learned so much from it (yes in just one class) and I feel a lot more confident. All instructors are amazing, very informative, helpful, and know all types of different techniques and scenarios that could possibly deal with. I am definitely planning in going to the next one in November as well. This is a class that everyone should take it at least once as it prepares you of how to deal with different possible scenarios. Aikido of Charlotte is first class! I sent my daughter and my granddaughter to a self-defense course that they offered. The facility was clean and modern. The staff is knowledgeable and professional as well as good at teaching their craft. It was awesome to see my daughter and granddaughter come home and show us the techniques that they learned to help protect themselves. They were convenient to get to just off of I 77 at exit 23. If you ever feel the need to be able to better protect yourself and your family you have to check them out.

My boys and I attended Aikido of Charlotte's self-defense class recently and we had a great experience! The facility is excellent. Jonathan had many instructors there to make sure everyone had guidance and got hands-on practice. The class was well attended with several repeat visitors and was very informative. Definitely time well spent and a good introduction to self defense for all ages.

I had previously practiced Aikido over 13 years ago while attending university. When I found out about Aikido of Charlotte (and how close I lived to it) I became very excited to resume my Aikido journey. What I have found in Aikido of Charlotte is a dojo that has far exceeded my expectations (and previous experience). Dennis Main Sensei and Jonathan Weiner Sensei have set a comfortable environment to learn and are excellent at recognizing where your experience level is and adjusting their instruction to make sure you are working at the right pace. The dojo is very clean and can accommodate large classes. The students have been my favorite thing about Aikido of Charlotte. Experience levels range from Black Belt down to beginners. Beginner students are encouraged to train with more experienced students who are eager to accommodate that training. They are a warm and welcoming group that I am happy to work with. If you are interested in Aikido and live in the area, you have an incredible opportunity waiting for you at Aikido of Charlotte.

Aikido offers a great self-defense class! I got so much more out of it than I expected. The hands on training was invaluable. The instructors do a great job making you comfortable while being very convincing. People can show you or tell you what to do, but the repeated practice makes all the difference! Highly recommend this class to all women, especially those in college! It's 2 hours of your time that could one day save your life.

I have been an Aikido practitioner in another style off and on for over 20 years. I love the art but have not always lived close enough to a dojo to practice. After moving to the Charlotte area last year, I once again put my training on hold until I found Aikido of Charlotte. This dojo is a wonderful community that is friendly and supportive regardless of your level or background and the Sensei are knowledgeable and caring. Members include men and women of all different ages, professions and experiences, working cooperatively and learning from each other. If you are new to martial arts and are looking for something that not only strengthens mind and body but also promotes harmony I suggest you consider Aikido. I've studied martial arts at various intervals throughout my life. I've never before found a dojo where the culture was so perfectly meshed with the art itself. There is nothing but a humble enthusiasm from every single instructor and student. Though new to this particular art and my previous training often getting in the way of learning I have never been made to feel anything but encouragement. They are exceedingly competent, and not just in the art itself but perhaps even more importantly in the art of teaching. I can't give higher praise.
